EXPECTATIONS AND PROFESSIONAL NORMS At the Career Discovery

Dear Students, Your experience at the FCS College & Career Discovery is an exciting day for you! As you begin planning for your high school courses and areas of interest, we encourage you to carefully explore the possibilities that await you. We have designed this event so that you may learn more about the many offerings available at each of our high schools around career pathways, their corresponding career tech student organizations (CTSO’s), speak with current teachers and students, talk with high school counselors, and also interact with several local colleges. You also should take time to visit the information area around internships and mentorships. Career and technical education in our system seeks to connect academic and technical skills to future educational and career opportunities. Options within each pathway offer curriculum and instruction linked to industry standards in labs featuring the latest technology and equipment replicating simulated work environments. Successful completion of a career pathway also allows you to earn industry credentials required in today’s job market. In summary, career pathways will allow you to: • • • • •

blend rigorous academic/technical preparation discover interests and passions utilize career development services experience all aspects of a business or industry plan for transitions into post-secondary opportunities

Many businesses and the local community have worked together to create this event for you to make solid decisions during future high school registration. By now, your school has prepared you for this day in regards to what to expect, professional etiquette, dressing for success, and feeling comfortable engaging with the business leaders and others represented. Explore business/industry opportunities in Forsyth County and high school career pathway choices across the district! Imagine yourself in a particular occupation and actively involved in a high school career pathway that aligns with that occupation! Make the most of your Career Discovery experience! • Visit the high school booths. • Review the pathway guides. • Meet the pathway teachers and see their labs. • Hear firsthand from students in each pathway. • Learn about CTSOs. • Check out the colleges. • Listen to the trade talks and career stories from business/industry leaders. • Gain career guidance from the keynote speakers. • Meet the counselors. • Go “live” and chat with teachers and counselors. • Meet a community hero. • Check out FCS College & Career Development at the district level to find valuable information. Review the activities in this Student Guide. You will complete activities on the “live” day while others will be completed at school.

After the Career Discovery Send thank-you notes to businesses. See sample in this book. Continue to review the valuable information on the website with your teachers and parents until mid-February. Don’t forget to complete the remaining activities in this book.

DRESS FOR SUCCESS Do's: 1. Get a good nights sleep. 2. Take a shower. 3. Dress up and check your appearance in the mirror. Look like a business person. 4. Mute cell phones and all other digital devices. 5. Remember that first impressions matter. 6. Have a positive attitude. 7. Offer a firm handshake. 8. Make eye contact, smile and stand tall!

DIGITIAL FOOTPRINT Research revealed that 60% of employers will use your social media profiles to learn about you before ever meeting you. Cleaning up your social media profiles to make them more professional is an important but tedious task. Use the guide below to assist you with determining what posts to remove and how to represent yourself in a positive manner to future employers and colleges.

Consider Removing

Don'ts: 1. Chew gum. 2. Use a cell phone or other digital device during the event. 3. Wear sunglasses or headgear, such as a hat or bandana. 4. Mumble. Slouch. Twitch.

Inappropriate posts (those tagged and tagged) inclusive of videos, photos, comments and meme’s

Discriminatory comments related to or referencing gender, race, religion, etc.

Mean, bullying, demeaning, rude cynical or hurtful posts

Photos that visually show or depict criminal or illegal activities or substances

Excessive amounts of selfies (especially those with offensive gestures)

Posts related to dissatisfaction with previous employers
