My goodness! The 2nd quarter was just crazy busy with Porsche events. What a difference from 3 years ago when the event calendar was to go to Avenue Mall on the 2nd Saturday of the month to display our cars and chat with fellow Porsche owners. Our new social chairmen, Janet and Patrick O’Donnell have knocked the social calendar out of the park!

Taking good ideas from other regions is proven technique on how to infuse our region with fun things to do. Just imagine doing 3 Porsche events on the same day! Florida Crown Region is a big geographic area. Members near the beaches do not want to go over the St. John’s River to do events and like wise for members in Clay, Alachua, Lake, Baker, Bradford, Putnam, Dixie, Columbia, Gilchrist, Hamilton and Union counties.

The Porsches and Pancakes events are meant to help flatten those geographic silos by encouraging our entire geographic region to get together in smaller groups. Our pancake areas are now at 4 with Gainesville (!) having a pancake event.

Our first autocross in over 5 years was successful. The last couple of years has been challenging to convince the FCR Board to have an autocross at the FIRM racetrack in Starke, near Keystone Heights. Weather has been a challenge at both events, but the turnout has twice shown that FCR can have enough cars to pay for track rental and the track is very suitable for autocross events. The turnout also has shown that Porsche owners do want some basic instruction on performance driving skills.

One person cannot stage an autocross. The 2 driver events would not have happened without the help of the Buccaneer Region of SCCA. FCR showed up to support these 2 events but FCR also needs manpower to transport our autocross equipment to a site, set up the pylons and timers, run the event with course workers, and then take it all down! Yes, this a cry for help.

2025 marks Porsche Club of America’s 70th anniversary, so PCA decided to create a video to share our celebrations with the automotive enthusiast community at large. With club community scenes captured on video as far back as the 1950s through today, we hope you enjoy looking back and recognizing how far our members have taken the club. From the Prez

Blink and you’ll miss it. Now we’re hitting the midway point of the year and we’re not slowing down.

Is it me or have we been a bit busier this year? What are your thoughts on the frequency and quality of events? The Board is keen on receiving your feedback so we can continue to provide events and activities for you to enjoy. You, dear members, are what drives our enthusiasm.

One particular event I’m thrilled with is the monthly recurring Porsches & Pancakes. As of the end of July, we will bring on a fourth location in Gainesville! More events in more locations to meet you where you are.

Have you noticed that Drive & Dines are becoming more frequent? The word I’m hearing is that they’re filling up quickly – it highlights the quality and new destinations being offered by our social chairs, the O’Donnells. Keep an eye out for our next Porsches & Coffee event as well – the previous one in Amelia Island had a great turnout.

Don’t forget that on September 13th, Florida Crown Region will be celebrating the 70th Anniversary of PCA with a concours and swap meet at Porsche Jacksonville. We will be hosting several special guest speakers to regale fascinating history and stories of PCA’s earlier days – be sure not to miss it!

I’m seeing more new faces when I attend events, whether a Porsches & Pancakes or a Drive & Dine, or one of the excellent locations for Porsches & Coffee. If you haven’t yet attended, we encourage you to come out and meet us. If you have been attending, great! We want to continue seeing you. Don’t be shy, come say hi! (I’m not going to apologize for that corny line).

Stay in the loop of upcoming events through the website, email blasts, and our Facebook page. We’re looking forward to seeing you there!

Keep the shiny side up!

JUNE AUTOCROSS AND DRIVER TRAINING EVENT

Our 2nd event at The FIRM was a success. FCR continues to offer coaches for drivers who want feedback or driving tips. We had 40 entries and 11 coaches. The course on June 15th offered lots of places to give the driver tips on being faster and more confident in their driving.

This event would not have happened without the help of the local SCCA region and a small committee that is helping stage events. Debbie Cooper, Janet & Patrick O’Donnell, Sabine Moeller, and I helped plan the two 2025 driver training events. The June 15th event was cut short by lightning. Just like any televised sporting event, when lightning happens you shut things down.

The autocross program needs an infusion of track junkies and Porsche drivers to sustain this resurrected program. I have been the autocross chair of 2 PCA Regions, Niagara and Central New York. I was chair of the SCCA autocross program in those same locations. The new chair will have myself as a mentor and all the FCR members mentioned above. Mel Ward deserves our thanks for years of running the program and storing all the equipment. Autocross sites are hard to come by but we are pursuing several sites in the FCR Region.

Historic Putnam Hotel Tour

November 8th, 2025

15487 Northwest Highway19, Cross City FL 32628

It was 1927 when the Putnam Lumber Company built this finely crafted hotel using very rare pecky cypress and other fine hardwoods. The hotel was restored in 2014 and still has its old charm and character from the days when Al Capone visited and it served as a bootlegger meeting point during the prohibition days.

Our tour begins in Green Cove Springs. Expect two tour groups when we depart and as we drive through some of North Florida’s most beautiful country backroads past an institution where the criminal Ted Bundy was sentenced for his horrific crimes and finally ended when he got the shock of his life.

We will have lunch in High Springs, then depart for the Putnam Hotel enjoying more lightly traveled backroads. After we check in at the hotel, enjoy walking around the property, or maybe take a drive to see Horseshoe Beach which was originally populated in the 1800’s and is considered “Florida’s Last Frontier”.

We inspected several of the rooms at the hotel and found them to be clean, no musty odors and they allow pets.

Dinner will be in the 1927 Steakhouse which is located on the property within the lodge.

This FCR Tour will be limited - They only have 20 rooms available for us! When you call and make your reservation mention PORSCHE Club and get a 10% discount. RESERVATIONS AT THE HOTEL MUST BE MADE BY OCTOBER 8TH.

Porsche market trends?

Mart is the best solution!

Sign up for PCA’s free monthly e-newsletter, Mart Fresh News!

The Porsche Club of America features news, videos, and information about the current market for used Porsches in the monthly Mart Fresh News email newsletter.

Mart shoppers are PCA members who know Porsches, know what they’re looking at, and are serious, ready, willing, and able buyers — not tire kickers. Because PCA members take care of their Porsches, vehicle quality in The Mart is better than other websites. And these are not anonymous buyers and sellers, they are registered PCA members.

The Mart is one of the most visited parts of PCA.org, recording over 650,000 page views per month. In addition to your online Mart ad, you get a summary version of your ad in Porsche Panorama.

Mart Fresh News also highlights a variety of Porsche listings from PCA’s Mart Classifieds. When you find a vehicle in The Mart, you can be assured that it’s been cared for by a registered PCA member — not some anonymous seller.

It’s a free benefit of membership — there is no charge to place an ad in The Mart!

You Caught Me Smiling

Man, it’s hard to write a column sometimes. It’s hard to come up with an idea, an idea that sings, that resonates and, oh by the way, has enough meat on the bones to fill up the allocated space.

When I started writing these columns, mumble/mumble/mumble years ago, I was so worried about that challenge, about the fear that I’ll run out of things to say, or write, that I created a cheat sheet, a puddle of potential topics that, if I was ever desperate, I could dive into.

I’m not sure how it has happened, but I’ve never dipped my toe into the list. In fact, I’m not even sure where that list is. Because, again and again, something pops up, somewhere, somehow. I can’t explain it.

Sometimes I just make up the whole thing. And that’s fun. Sometimes I come across something that just clicks and begs for commentary. But and this is a big but, even there, I still have to make a judgment as to whether there’s enough to say on the topic to fill this space.

It happened when I came across this article in Autoweek, recently. The headline read “Which Car Brands Make Us Smile? You Won’t Agree With This List.”

Yeah, I know. What a caveat. It hooked me. Maybe Autoweek was swimming in its own desperation file. Maybe their writer was being paid by the word and needed more words to make the rent. But no. Turns out that the actual list was compiled by Autotrader in the UK. Here’s what they did, and I quote, “A computer survey in the UK analyzed selfies people took with their cars, determined whether these people were smiling, and used the data to come up with the top 25 cars that make people smile.”

Uh, gee, let me state this unequivocally. I am not making this up. But I knew that I had my column.

The smiling winner? I know you’re on the edge of your chair…. Smart! And Volkswagen was number two. They even ran a photo of a young maiden posing by the fender of a Beetle. Did the Autotrader folks even verify that the selfies were taken by the owners? Does it matter? Who knows. Who really cares. It gets nuttier. Mini, that paragon of cuteness … ever see the window sticker that says, “Actual size”? The Mini was 23 out of 25. Porsche was 12. Lamborghini was 21. Ferrari wasn’t on the list. Although Fiat came in at 20. Let’s just say I’m glad Autoweek ran their caveat in their headline. Because, to me, what counts, what really counts, is what happens when you get in. I point to my ’78 911 as exhibit A or no. 1 on my list for real grins. After all these years, every time I start it, blip the throttle, roll it out of the garage, shift, that smile happens. As sure as summer follows spring. The rest of my list? Well, this past weekend was the biggest car show of the season in the Denver area. And I can attest to the fact that, as I passed a Carrera

GT, with the engine cover up, I was panting. Panting, for the owner to start it up. I poked my friend and said, “Sounds like a detuned F1 car.” He grinned and said, “I know.”

I also got a laugh when I reached the Aston Martin section. Yeah, the cars were great. But the license plates. “MI 6.” And something like “Q.” And something like “Moneypenny.” Sorry, I didn’t write them down.

At Lotus, I drooled over a Super 7. And an original Elite. The Brit sports cars area brought back a flood of memories. A TR 250, a TR 3, several TR 6s. I wanted to see a TR 4, because that was the car that first brought an indelible grin to my face. My first sports car. I was 17. Took every last cent I had. The night I got it I sat in it and played the radio. Because I hadn’t yet learned how to drive a stick. But no. No TR 4s. And what of the marque that was not on the smiles list? The purest of “pur sang?” Well, amid all the post-355 variations and the modern front engine/rear drive versions, there, resplendent, was one of the highest achievements of Il Commendatore, a true Prancing Horse legend for the ages, a 275 GTB. Rosso. Nero interior. I paused, in reverence.

Next time Autotrader fills space with a car brands list, it should factor in personal pedigree and awe factor. I know what would then be on my list, and in my heart. And I wouldn’t care if Autoweek agreed with me, or not. There, I said it. I’m done.

Attendance at the Masters or Treffen?

Which is harder? Getting a ticket to the Masters Tournament or getting in a PCA Treffen? I have been trying to win the lottery to get tickets for the Masters Golf Tournament for over 10 years without success. Walking the course at Augusta is on my bucket list. During the Spring Treffen at the Omni Homestead Resort in Hot Springs VA, I met one attendee that had been trying for 8 years to get into a Treffen. This was his first Treffen and he loved it.

Because we always bring a dog to Treffens we have been able to go to three Treffens. You ask, “how does bring a dog get you in a Treffen that sells out on-line in seven minutes?” Since we have a dog at the event we don’t sign up for any of the group tours. All tours include lunch and not many restaurants don’t take pets. So, we are very fast signing up and always have success getting a spot. With over 160,000 PCA members and only ~275 slots (most slots are filled with couples, so it’s about 130 Porsches) it’s a mad dash to get one. OK, so now you know my secret to get into a Treffen. But it’s time to let others have a trip of a lifetime.

The Homestead Treffen was wonderful. The fees include your breakfasts and dinners. The welcoming gifts this Spring were a backpack cooler and a vest for each person (with a 70 Year PCA patch). For those folks that wanted to participate in the tours there were four great driving tours. For those that don’t want to go on the organized tours, directions are provided so one can still enjoy the rides.

What are you waiting for?

Florida Crown’s High Performance Driver’s Education Program Welcomes You to Join the Fun!

For those of you who don’t know what High Performance Driver’s Education is about, I can imagine that you may have a lot of questions and are likely feeling a bit intimidated. I certainly did before I did my first event 15 years ago! In this short article, I hope to address some questions and alleviate some of the anxiety that may be keeping you away from giving this extremely fun, safe and educational club activity a try. Let’s start with some basics…

What is High Performance Driver’s Education anyway? Well, it is basically a structured program that allows you to take your Porsche (we also welcome other makes as well) onto a racetrack. No previous track experience is needed. We are here to teach you. As a beginner track day driver, you will be assigned a trained instructor who has been trained by PCA, SCCA or other similar track day organizations and you will drive in a run group of comparably experienced fellow drivers. Your instructor will teach you about track safety such as the flags used during a track day, managing other traffic on the track with “controlled passing”, learning what is meant by the “racing line” around a racetrack and providing the correct throttle, braking and steering inputs to drive the track in the smoothest and most efficient way possible. Your instructor will help you learn within your comfort zone, encourage skill development, and most importantly, enable a FUN weekend experiencing what a Porsche can really do that you can’t (and shouldn’t) do on public roads. As you gain more HPDE experience, you can progress into higher run groups and ultimately can become a solo driver in more advanced run groups.

What do I need to do if I am interested in HPDE? First, find and sign up for our Florida Crown event! See details at the end of this article about our upcoming event. Typical event registration costs are ~$500 for a weekend which includes your instructor at no additional cost. Most PCA regions offer HPDE events, and all follow a set of minimum guidelines. These minimum guidelines require your car to get a technical inspection by a professional mechanic within 30 days of the event ensuring your car is safe to take on the track (or what repairs may be required), a helmet meeting certain safety standard (if you’re not ready to buy one right away, these can be rented from race outfitters) and getting prepared for the event.

After you register for our event, our Florida Crown HPDE organizers will provide you with communication and guidance along the way to ensure you are taking all the right steps at the right time! What happens when I show up at the HPDE event?

We encourage all instructors to contact their students about 1 week ahead of the event to get acquainted with you and to address any questions you may have prior to the event. When you show up the first morning of the event, you’ll check in with the event registrar, go through a brief final technical inspection of your car, attend a driver’s meeting, and meet up with your instructor to prepare for your first session on the track. Throughout the course of our 2-day event, you’ll have about 8 sessions on track of 20-25 minutes each session with time in between to watch the other run groups on track, rest, eat, etc. There will be a classroom session to with an instructor to talk about the concepts you are learning on the track and to answer any questions you have and to share what you are experiencing.

OK, this sounds fun, and I’m interested in giving it a try! What’s next? Florida Crown will be having our event at Roebling Road Raceway in Bloomingdale, GA outside of Savannah on January 17-18, 2026. You can check out this venue at www.roeblingroad.com. We do our event registration at www.clubregistration.net and our event registration will open in early October 2025.

In the meantime, please contact me (John Pellerin) at FCRTRACK2@gmail.com or our registrar Michelle Mullen at FCRHPDE@gmail.com and we’ll be more than happy to chat with you. Additionally, we are planning to arrange a live HPDE seminar to go into more details later in the Summer or early Fall.

As a member of Florida Crown region, we are bringing this great activity opportunity to you, and we hope you will join us for this very fun, safe and educational way to enjoy your Porsche as it was intended!

Wayne Cusick ’09 Carrera S

We had a great turnout this year with the event reaching capacity in record time. The Brumos Collection’s rear lot has 59 parking spaces, limiting us to 60 Porsches. Please register early next year to guarantee a spot.

After the event we asked the participants for their feedback. Multiple folks made two excellent suggestions:

 Earlier announcement of winners - we will do this.

 More clarity about judging and car preparation. To address this, a Concours Prep Workshop will be held in The Brumos Collection shop on Saturday, August 23rd from 9 to 11:30 AM, details forthcoming.

The FCR’s High Performance Driver Education (HPDE) booth, staffed by John Pellerin and Marty Flack, again drew strong regional interest. HPDE events at Roebling Road Raceway are a great way to experience your car on the track. First timers are encouraged to attend!

Special thanks to FCR members Chris Hoyt, Bob Barren, Ed Lustgarten, and Hans-Dieter Mandt and our judges Bruce DuFresne, Chris Hoyt, Jeff Jones, Don Leatherwood, Sabine Moeller (first timer!), Steve Palmer, Ken Perry, Chris Pownall, Neil Rashba and John Trainer, who all contributed to making the event a success.

Finally, the FCR concours’ team thanks The Brumos Collection – Brandon Starks, Toni Boudreaux-Godwin, and founder Dan Davis. Their guidance and support help us make the event better each year.

We look forward to seeing you at our second concours of the year on Saturday, September 13th at Porsche Jacksonville.

Florida Crown’s Inaugural Concours Prep Workshop August 23rd, at the Brumos Collection

Get ready to rev up your buffers and polish those beauties!  After out sold-out concours in April, many members were wondering, how can I participate. When I first joined the club and attended the regional and Parade Concours events, I felt the experience was more like hazing than a warm welcome. Sadly, this isn’t just a car club issue; it’s a common problem in many organizations. Our expanded board is shaking things up, ditching the old “We’ve always done it that way” mentality, se we’re offering our first concours prep workshop at the Brumos Collection on August 23rd This workshop is the first in a series designed to help you prep your cars for Florida Crown’s regional events, held twice a year. We’re tapping into PCA’s deep well of talent, featuring Florida Crown Concours veterans and experts who will share their secrets on getting your car concours-ready. Brandon Starks, Executive Director of the Brumos Collection has generously offered their climate-controlled garage space for our workshop. Can you think of a cooler way to spend a Saturday morning? 
