Our recent unbeaten record came to an end away at Abbey Hulton United on Saturday afternoon. The fixture was always going to be a difficult one as our opponents were lying in second place in the league after a strong start to the season. Equally it was an opportunity for us to test ourselves against some very strong opposition. As it was I thought we had the better of the game throughout. We gave a way two scrapy goals by our standards and on another day coud very easily have come away with all three points. However, taking the positives it was very reassuring to see how far we have come as a team and are proving a match for the very best teams in this division.

At this level there are no easy matches and tonight’s home fixture sees us up against the current league leaders, Rylands. Our opponents have only lost three matches so far and are the division’s top scorers by some distance. No doubt we need to be at our best this evening but if we can get something out of this match it will confirm what i think we already know that we are moving in the right direction.

OUR VISITORS

Year Formed: 1911 Ground: Rylands Recreation Club Managers: David McNabb & Stuart Wellstead Rylands Recreation Club were formed as a local works (wire manufacturer) team in 1911. In their early days they played in the Liverpool County Combination before joining the Warrington & District League where they enjoyed considerable success.

Establishing themselves throughout the 1950’s they won successive Premier Division Championships from 1955 to 1959. Added to the league in 1958 was Warrington Districts’ prestigious Guardian Cup and to complete a hatrick of trophies the club also lifted the Liverpool Junior Cup. Steady progress throughout the 60’s prompted the club to look for new mountains to climb and in 1969 the club joined a relatively new league, The Mid-Cheshire League. The step up in standard saw a barren trophy cabinet for a number of years, but in 1979 they won their first trophy by defeating Barnton in the League Cup final, which led to a successful period at the club.

Rylands won the Mid-Cheshire League championship in 1981 and were again champions in 1984 when Joe Rudge’s side lost only once all season. 1983/84 was also the season that Rylands thought they were on their way to

Wembley when they entered the last 32 of the FA Vase with wins over Blackpool Mechanics, Maghull, Atherton LR and Rainworth MV. But it was against the latter that saw an appeal against the length of the pitch and when it was found to be just over a yard short, a replay was ordered which Rainworth won 1-0.

A barren run of years, a time when the club resigned the Reserves from the Mid-Cheshire League, was ended when a newly formed youth team lifted the Warrington & District Youth Cup with an extra time win over local rivals Warrington Town. This provided the springboard for senior honours in 1993. The Reserves were reinstated and went on to win the Division Two League Cup with an extra time win over Knutsford. Prior to the start of the 1996/97 season the club formed a link with a local junior club – Beechfield – and these youth sides continued to bring trophies in to the club. Warrington & District Youth Cup in 1997, Wigan & District League Runners-up in 1998 and in 1999 both the Warrington & District League and Cup. These young players rejuvenated the club and in 1999-00 the first team reached the MidCheshire League Cup Final only to lose out to Knutsford in a penalty shoot-out after being reduced to nine men with twenty minutes of extra time left. Season 2001/02 would see a surprise end to the campaign. An undefeated run of nine games saw the first team snatch runners-up spot on goal difference.

In 2003, Rylands again reached a MidCheshire Cup final – The Presidents Cup – but lost out to Styal. The club then fell on hard times and in 2008 amalgamated with Crosfields to form a new club, Crosfields / Rylands FC. Under the new name both the first and reserve teams reached Mid-Cheshire League Cup Finals, unfortunately losing in

both and their anguish would continue when the firsts lost out to Woodley in 2010 and the reserves to Pilkington the season after.

Prior to the start of the 2012/13 season, the club resumed the name of Rylands FC with the backing of a new sponsor, Triple S Sports & Entertainment Group – led by former Rylands player Paul Stretford. The first team went on to win the Warrington Guardian Cup in 2015, whilst also coming Mid-Cheshire League Cup runners up in 2013, 2014 and 2018.

After restoring stability to the first and reserve teams, the club decided to grow.

An under 21 team was formed in 2015 that entered the new North West Under 21 Development League, before the Rylands merged with local junior club, Fife Rangers, bringing seventeen teams and over two hundred players under the Rylands Football Club banner in 2016.

Alongside the stability and growth of the club on the pitch, year-on-year investment off the pitch was also made in to developing the facilities at Rylands Recreation Club with the aim of meeting ground grading criteria for promotion, which came to fruition in the spring of 2018 when the club was successfully admitted in to the North West Counties Football League Division One South for the 2018/19 season – the first season in its 107-year history that Rylands first team will compete at Step 6.

In a closely fought encounter. FC Oswestry Town narrowly went down to high flying Abbey Hukton United.

Against the run of play the home side took the lead after 14 minutes through Joshua Tune. Town equalised just before half time when following a

corner a Sean Jones shot was diverted in by Liam Parry. The second half folwed the same pattern as the first with Town enjoying the lion’s share of possesion. However, that man Tune popped up again to score the winner on 68 minutes.

NEWS FROM THE HSL In the Premier Division, City of Liverpool extended their lead at the top to five points with a 3-1 win at West Didsbury & Chorlton, with two second half goals from Craig Cairns eventually seeing off the home side. Congleton Town moved into second place, with goals from Daniel Cope, Dean Warburton and Emini Adegbenro earning them a 3-1 win in the Cheshire derby at Northwich Victoria.

They leapfrogged over Runcorn Town who overcame the loss of two early goals to draw level with Burscough at home, but Jordan Lorde struck the winner for the visitors six minutes from time.

Silsden and Barnoldswick Town remain in fourth and fifth place respectively but both lost ground after going down to heavy defeats. 1874 Northwich slammed home five without reply against Silsden, two of them penalties from Scott McGowan, while Barnoldswick Town went 4-0 at Bootle.

The most dramatic finish of the day was at Yockings Park, where Whitchurch Alport came from 2-1 down with 12 minutes remaining to eventually defeat Charnock Richard 3-2 thanks to two goals from Arron Johns, the second coming in stoppage time.

Both Abbey Hey and Hanley Town remain in the bottom four after both fell to 5-1 defeats, with Padiham winning 5-1 at home to Hanley Town, and at the Abbey Stadium Ryan Riley and Dean Ing both scored twice as Abbey Hey fell to a 5-1 home defeat at the hands of Squires Gate. Two games ended in draws, with Irlam and Ashton Athletic failing to find a goal between them, and Litherland REMYCA were held 1-1 at home to Winsford United.

In the First Division North, Longridge Town continue to set the pace at the top after a 5-1 home win over St Helens Town. Daniel Gardener’s two late goals put the game to bed for Town, whose lead over Carlisle City at the top remains at two points. The Cumbrians won 3-0 at Ashton Town, with the prolific Robert McCartney adding another two goals to his already impressive tally for the season.

Avro remain in third place but are now ten points behind Carlisle City, after a 90th minute equaliser from Duncan Knott salvaged a point from a 3-3 draw at home to AFC Blackpool. Goals from Daniel Keane and Mathew Waller earned Shelley at 2-0 win at Atherton LR that moved them into fourth place. Two goals from Mason Nevitt helped Lower Breck to a 3-0 win over Prestwich Heys that moved them up into eighth place, and the highest scorers of the day were Chadderton, whose 6-1 home win over Cleator Moor Celtic was their biggest of the season.

Anthony Hall scored twice for Bacup Borough in a 4-0 win at Nelson that moved them into mid-table, and there was some good news at last for Daisy Hill, who recorded their first league win of the season with a 2-0 win over Garstang. Both goals were scored

by Ashley Stott, taking his tally to six in three games. The win for Daisy Hill also moved them out of the bottom two as Holker Old Boys lost 2-1 at AFC Darwen. The Stags had taken the lead through John-Paul Stanway, but goals frm Daneil Taylor and Elliot Pond secured the points for the home side. There was one game played on Friday night, with AFC Liverpool taking a point from a 3-3 draw at home to Steeton thanks to a stoppage time equaliser from Jordan Foster.

The top of the First Division South table continues to look congested, with just four points separating the top five teams.

The top spot is occupied by Rylands, who continued their run of goalscoring form with a 5-0 win at home to Barnton, Jay White’s hat trick being the highlight of the afternoon.

Abbey Hulton United are level on points with Rylands but stay second on goal difference following their 2-1 home win over FC Oswestry Town, earned by two goals from Joshua Tune.

Cheadle Heath Nomads are in third place after Karl Bailey’s 88th minute equaliser earned St Martins a 1-1 draw at the Venue.

Nomads had led through a first half opener from Philip Yuille.

Wythenshawe Amateurs are in fourth place, eventually having to settle for a 3-3 draw at home to Stone Old Alleynians after two goals from David Wright had helped them to 3-1 lead eight minutes into the second half.

A few miles away across town, goals from Brad Byrne, Chris Middleton and Dylan Stringer-Moth ensured a 3-1 win for Wythenshawe Town over Vauxhall Motors that moved Town into sixth place.

Sandbach United’s good run of recent form was temporarily halted as they were held to a 2-2 draw at home to New Mills.

All the goals came in the first half, with Jordan Milne and Adam Farrand scoring for the Millers, while Kieran Garner-Knapper and James Kirby from the penalty spot replied for United.

Stockport Town were the division’s highest scorers, Matthew Hanson and Adam Etches both scoring twice in the 5-1 home win over Eccleshall, and Stone Dominoes dropped into the bottom two after going down 2-0 at home to Alsager Town.

Ellesmere Rangers remain bottom after losing 2-1 at home to Maine Road, and in the other game Cheadle Town shared a 1-1 draw with Cammell Laird 1907 at Park Road, with Ben Dutton-Kelly earning a point for Lairds with a 79th minute equaliser to cancel out a first half goal by Luke Hincks for Town.
