Application Software  Packaged software  mass-produced, copyrighted retail software that meets the needs of a

wide variety of users, not just single user or company. Available in retail stores or on the web.

 Custom Software  the functions specify to a business or industry. E.g. Enterprise Resource Planning SW (ERP) – combine ,organize and maintain important data involved in day to day operations of a business  A web application  a web site that allows users to access and interact with software from any computer or device that is connected to the Internet. e.g. e-mail, word processing, game programs. 6


Application Software  Open source software  provided for use, modification, & redistribution. Has no restriction from

the copyright holder. Can be downloaded from the Internet at no cost. E.g. : Linux, Joomla, Android etc.  Shareware  copyrighted software that is distributed at no cost for a trial period. To

use a shareware beyond that period, a user must pay to the developer. e.g. : Adobe Acrobat, WinZip, Video & Audio converter, Internet Downloader, AutoCAD, etc.

Application Software  Freeware  copyrighted software provided at no cost to a user by an individual or a

company that retains all rights to the software. e.g. : VLC media player, Adobe Flash Player, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, etc.  Public-domain  has been donated for public to use and has no copyright restrictions.

Anyone can copy or distribute public domain software to others at no cost.  e.g.: SQL Lite (embedded database ), Web Lab & Visual Molecular Dynamics : to create three-dimensional drawings of molecules. 8
