After the great growth of the company, Mango decided to build a new logistics hub with the idea of centralizing all worldwide clothing production.

It´s been created a 330,000 m2 logistics center that is capable of handling 75,000 item per hour.

This plant is expandable to almost 500,000 m2 in a second phase according to the corporate growth in the future.

Already almost fully completed, the center is not operational yet, but it will start at the end of 2016, once finished 5 years of works reaching an inv estment of 300 â‚Ź million.

This is the largest textile logistics center in Spain and the first to be considered as a single fire sector, establishing a precedent in fire protection engineering.

The logistics hub is built on a steep slope surface and has two lev els below the lowest natural lev el.

With different heights depending on the area, the construction reaches a maximum height of 46 meters from its lowest lev el.

The structure is formed by metallic pillars because of the height required. It was impossible to build with precast concrete pillars due to the length of them.

The roof is light in almost all the surface except for two specific areas where heav y-weight machines such as chillers, boilers, tanks or other elements for HVAC installations or compressed air are located.

- HVAC

The main idea of the project is not to climatize the building as in any other case, but just to temper it. Because of the large v olumes of air due to the size of the construction, it is impossible to achiev e homogeneous temperatures inside, and it would be an inconceiv able and useless energy waste.

Thus, the installation has been thought to climatize some specific spots in the building, where people are working permanently, but the rest of the areas.

The production of cold and hot water was designed by chillers and boilers, and is div ided in two areas: the southern and northern roof, both with two elements of cold and hot water production.

The chillers selected were Trane HSS (High Seasonal Short) with inv erter technology and adaptiv e frequency driv e, due to the aim of the use of the building, which won´t need cooling during the whole year.

Regarding the heating system, condensing boilers hav e been selected basically due to its high efficiency up to 98% recov ering its latent heat of v aporisation. In this case, we choose Viessmann, model Vitocrossal 300 because of their modular systems that let grow up in the future.

The typology of most of the terminal units in the different areas of the building are 2-pipe-units fan coils (Airlan) with cooling/heating power up to 140 kW. The reason to use a 2-pipes system was essentially economic and functional.

Due to the long distances of the pipes from the production units in the roof to the indoor units, use 2 pipes instead of 4 pipes would mean a huge inv estment sav ing.

In the background, because of the use of the building and the extreme temperatures in the location it´s placed, the users won´t demand heating and cooling and the same time.

This units in the most cases work without air return ducts because the temperature is not homogeneous, so they take the air from the open air.

Southern roof:

- Cooling: 2 chiller 490 kW Trane RTAF-125 HSS, 84,5 m3/h water flow and 3,07 EER. Water temperature production: 7-12 ยบC

- Heating: 2 boilers 787 kW Viessmann Vitocrossal 300, 45,2 m3/h water flow.

Water temperature production: 60-45 ยบC - 7 circuits 2-pipes cooling/heating

Northen roof

- Cooling: 2 chiller 490 kW Trane RTAF-125 HSS, 84,5 m3/h water flow and 3,07 EER Water temperature production: 7-12 ยบC - Heating: 2 boilers 630 kW Viessmann Vitocrossal 300, 36,2 m3/h water flow.

- Fire Prontection

The logistics center is considered a single fire-protection sector, which was v ery difficult to justify from a technical and safety point of v iew due to v arious reasons such as: the large distances of ev acuation routes, building height besides the fire load in the building of 2,780 MJ/m2, which classifies the building in a maximum special risk of grade 5.

To operate against the named risks abov e and to keep a single fireprotection sector, sev eral solutions were implemented, as the next: - Build underground ev acuation routes completely isolated - Install firewall curtains around the storage area

- Construction of 60.000 litres water tanks to ensure the water flow required for 120 minutes.

- Installation of “activ e� smoke detection, Vesda brand, much more effectiv e and reliable than conv entional and analogue detectors because of the large v olumes of air I n the building.

- Installation of “activ e� smoke detection, Vesda brand, much more effectiv e and reliable than conv entional and analogue detectors because of the large v olumes of air I n the building.

- SEWAGE

Sewage system also represented one of the most complex building facilities, both design and execution, for different reasons: - The slope of the ground where the building was built - The lack of external networks and collectors because there was nothing around urbanized - The fragility of all automation systems for logistics. All drainpipes hav e been installed in the perimeter of the building to av oid any break that could affect electronic systems.

This caused create pronounced slopes on the roof to carry the water and install large diameter pipes.

The logistics hub has obv iously many more facilities, such as natural gas, compressed air or plumbing, which didn´t cause much technical difficulty in its design and execution as the ones described before, and they won´t be detailed.

Corso Vittorio Emanuele, (Milano)

Within the fashion world, Milan is the European capital. This reason was significant enough to dev elop a 3,000 m2 retail space project in the downtown. This fact, turned the store into the largest in the world at that time and the most important flagship in Europe.

The establishment has four external faces and three sides in different streets facing each other.

Besides, the premise has three commercial lev els: basement, ground floor and first floor.

It is a building with a v ery peculiar morphology and a delicate structure that had to be reinforced in some v ery specific areas

Unlike other projects, here the major complexity was to adapt the fire protection installation, namely smoke exhaust or “desenfumage”.

The establishment used to hav e an official exceptionality by Milano.

Fire Department and adapt the entire installation of smoke exhaust to the new store Mango design was extremely complex to keep that official exceptionality.

Otherwise, the store couldn´t be legalized for breach with the Fire Department agreement.

The whole installation was redesigned with more demanding requirements. The smoke exhaust flow is now about 90.000 m3/h between the 3 floors and, and the ducts net is larger than 300 meters.

The second most difficult point of this project is focussed on the cooling system. Not regarding the composition of the system, because a VRF system was designed, but in the comfort needs in some specific places in the store with a high thermal load.

5 meters height LED screens and the heat produced by them, caused the installation of an independent air conditioning systems that only operates in cooling mode and it couldn´t be affected by a possible technical problem in the main installation.

The electric power is supplied by an electrical substation owned by Mango which feeds two different facilities: 1) The cooling system (172 kW):

By mid-2015 and as a symbol of its great expansion in Europe, Mango acquires an establishment of 800 m2 to expand its line of MAN. Used as a former and symbolic library, the building is from XVII century, formed by stone v aults and rooms with different morphology all around the property. We also could find slabs composed of wooden beams, reinforcement steel beams or small tile v aults.

The building structure was really sensitiv e because of the bad condition of arches that support it, with desv iations and fragmentations, and the age of the building.

The structure had to be reinforced by tensors. In turn, to execute the installations through the v aults, they were perforated to pass through electric power lines, water and fire pipes, and VRF pipes.

This reason and the establishment form, caused the installation of electrical switch boards in different spots of the store to av oid the pass of electrical wiring, fed by a total power of 85 kW.

Due to the shape of the v aulted ceilings and low height, was a big challenge to place the spot lights in the right position and correct projection angle to highlight the clothing colours and not interfere with the customers v iew, respecting the appropriate lumen lev el.

Engineering design for building serv ices, in harmony with the architecture took its best in this store.

Fire detectors, speakers, electric wires, CCTV, all elements of the roof were dissimulated with coherence and symmetry.

Obv iously, and as usual, the air conditioning system represented the biggest problem for sev eral reasons: - Dissimulating machines on the top without false ceiling - Pass fresh air ducts from outside through the v aults - Short distances and low heights for air supplying - Two doors facing oppositely in parallel streets with risk to create air currents due to pressure difference

Thus, different types of machines were used. Those units were connected to two VRF systems (soundproof because of neighbours) placed on two different rooftops, as the one showed below:

- Duct units

- Units in vault holes with nozzles to supply air

- Vertical wall units hidden behind furniture

All these machines are controlled by two Mitsubishi VRF systems with a total cooling power of 181 kW: - PUHY-950-YJM-A: 108 kW - PUHY-950-YJM-A: 73 kW The result between interior design, engineering and architecture is extraordinary, creating a diaphanous, v ery bright and pleasant env ironment through the skylights and the white colour that was printed all around the whole store.

With no doubt, it has been one of the most complex projects to dev elop because of the technique in building serv ices design and implementation of it.

All these machines are controlled by two Mitsubishi VRF systems with a total cooling power of 181 kW: - PUHY-950-YJM-A: 108 kW - PUHY-950-YJM-A: 73 kW The result between interior design, engineering and architecture is extraordinary, creating a diaphanous, v ery bright and pleasant env ironment through the skylights and the white colour that was printed all around the whole store.

With no doubt, it has been one of the most complex projects to dev elop because of the technique in building serv ices design and implementation of it.

“The Line” Mango Headquarters (Barcelona)

In 2014, because of its growth in recent years, Mango decides it´s the right time to expand the head offices, dev eloping the Project of “The Line”, the crown jewel of the company and its most v isible face.

The Line is div ided into 9 modules with a total area of 24.866 m2 (built on a 41.745 m2 plot), expandable in a second phase to 9 other symmetrical and taller building modules. Based structurally in a industrial warehouse, but taking care of the smallest construction details, this building reflects the dynamism of a young and growing company by unobstructed and communicativ e spaces, green areas and large glazed surfaces to create clarity in interior spaces.

In red the symmetric future potential 9 modules that would complete the global project as an ultimate building.

As a curiosity in a building with this kind of use, it should be noted that the structure was done with “post-tensioning (poststressed) concrete method�, which allowed reducing the slab height and increase the free height between floors for the facilities location, mainly mechanical due to they are the ones that physically occupy more space.

This main concrete structure also allows to eliminate pillars and solv es the v ertical elements and main interior slabs, as well as some "heav y" spots in the deck intended to support elements of facilities

- HVAC Due to the different uses in the building: offices, design workshops, assembly halls, or showrooms, we opted for the installation of a 4 pipes water system by boilers and chillers.

It´s a v ersatile system that meets the simultaneity and occupation required of the different units of the building. .

In this way, following power in indoor units hav e been installed:

To produce the water at the temperature conditions required, next units hav e been installed: - 2 chillers of 882 kW TRANE, with 84,2 m3/h water flow and 310.000 m3/h air flow.

Water temperature: 7-12 ยบC. - 2 chillers 620 kW VIESSMANN Vitocrosal G6, with Vitotronic 100GC1B regulation.

Water temperature: 60-45 ยบC. Both systems hav e space guaranteed for a growth option future with a third power generation element in each case:

For the distribution of water in the secondary circuits, 8 heating and 8 cooling circuits with v ariable flow pumps (Wilo) depending on the energy demanded in the building, are used.

The water reaches the installed internal elements: indiv idual fan coils or AHU depending of the kind of room.

Fan coils are located in the ceilings of the rooms (false or clear ceilings). Conv ersely, for the installation of the AHU technical rooms were thought on the second floor due to the inability to place them inside the building for its dimensions

AHU´s are intended for both functions, to cool/heat the rooms and to introduce fresh v entilation air to renew the internal env ironment. This fresh air is also tempered with water before get into the building to balance the external thermal loads.

Finally, the distribution ducts was complex due to such high distances in some rooms, up to 12 meters. This fact supposes v ery high pressure losses, so large fans in AHU units were installed to ov ercome these conditions.

The system composed of independent balancing v alv es, pressure and control regulation and stabilizers for modulation control as well as v ariable flow pumps guarantee sav ing and energy efficiency. All the regulation elements in the hydraulic system are Tour & Andersson (IMI-Hydronic).

- FIRE PROTECTION The building is div ided into 3 different fire areas:

- Offices/Showrooms: all rooms compose an area due to its similar use between them - Parking: is considered a special risk area - Conference hall: is considered an independent area, high risk, due to the crowd of people in a short time

A 170 m3 water tank was built to supply the system of sprinklers, hose reels and hydrants. For water distribution electrical and diesel pumps are used, as well as jockey pumps to maintain a constant pressure in the circuit.

The network of sprinklers consists of fiv e independent circuits to span different rooms and floors. The sprinklers are arranged in grids of 3x3 meters, occupying 9 m2 surface.

In the detection system, optical and thermal detectors hav e been used in most rooms.

In the highest rooms, due to this issue, displacement detectors (Vesla) are used for absorbing air continuously detecting the concentration of CO2 in it, fact that makes the detection faster and more effectiv e.

All items are from Tyco Fire (Zettler) and are connected to the Fire Department that controls any kind of alarm. The control panel works

by IP, is Zettler P805 model and can process up to 8 loops and 2000 detection points.

Rambla Catalunya Megastore (Barcelona)

1,500 m2 store located in a landmark building in one of the most important shopping streets in Barcelona center.

It is a former cinema, Alexandra Cinema, which was inaugurated in 1949 and has become a Mango megastore that houses all collections of the brand.

The original structural has obv iously nothing to do with Mango requirements, always looking for wide spaces with no v isible structure and less pillars as possible.

So, the construction required a total modification of the structure, remov ing most of the pillars and creating a new transparent and commercial space.

Due to its prev ious use, the premise was v ery high, in some areas reaching up to 15 meters. Looking for a wide space from a commercial point of v iew, it was decided to respect this height keeping just one floor, creating a large and stunning env ironment for the customers.

Regarding the facilities, was a major challenge to adapt the installation in two building typologies so different: false ceilings at 4 meters height and 15 meters height open ceilings with v isible slab.

The facilities were designed with the maximum respect to the interior design project of the store, which was v ery demanding, giv en that the shop was to become one of the Mango flagships.

The most complex installation, both design and execution, was the air conditioning system for different reasons: lack of space for outdoor units, soundproof the technical room in the roof because there is a hotel in the upper floors, the large v olume of air to cool, and specially the height from the air that was supplied in the highest part of the store, which required an special treatment.

In total 332.5 kW of cooling capacity were installed, div ided into four Mitsubishi VRF systems with the following cooling capacities: -

Besides a fifth system with heating recov ery: - PURY-P900-YJM-A: 101 kW

Which purpose is to use the residual heat in winter to heat the coolant gel and supply the air curtains. Despite being winter, when the air curtains work in heating mode, the air conditioning system works in cooling mode because the internal loads of occupation and lighting are v ery large and the outside thermal load doesn´t hav e much influence, so a system with heating recov ery it´s the perfect solution in this case.

Large v olumes of air at high speed (15 m/s in the nozzle) were designed to ov ercome the height and the heating transmission by radiation because of the direct light through a large skylight.

Mango, as any other fashion brand, and against energy efficiency, always keeps its doors opened to attract customers.

Thus, due to the building morphology in "L" form, a system of ov erpressure air was designed to prev ent the entry of air at different temperature from the street and make effectiv e the usefulness of air curtains.

Without a well-designed ov erpressure system, in a building with this length, the air curtains losses efficiency because the exterior air comes into below the air curtain breakpoint, which means a lot of energy wasted.

Nova Terminal Station, L9 Barcelona Subway

Ventilation Project 2011

Great magnitude project which includes the designing and subsequent execution of the different v entilation systems for stations in a new line of Barcelona metro.

The construction of “Line 9” was div ided in four stages, being executed the 4th and 1st respectiv ely, and it´s considered the longest underground line meter of Europe with 47.8 Km.

According to the technical requirements set by TMB (Barcelona Metropolitans Transports) the access platforms to the trains and technical rooms of each station had to be v entilated, besides putting ov erpressure in hallways and ev acuation stairs.

- Platforms ventilation: Air extraction in platforms of minimum air flow of 60,000 m3/h through rectangular ducts made of 1.2 mm thick galv anized steel sheet.

The aim is to keep a comfort degree for users on hold with the fan operating at low speed, and activ ate the smoke extraction mode in case of fire.

Therefore, under the prev ious calculation conditions, a fan Sodeca model THT-125-4T/9-18ยบ-50 was selected, specially for working in fire risk areas bearing 400 ยบC for 2 hours.

This fan generates a 37 kW power at 1.480 r.p.m. producing a 93 dB sound lev el, unacceptable noise exceeding the allowed threshold, considering the fans were located beside the street, where 45 dB. can not exceed The solution taken was to design a rectangular acoustic muffler STOC SER-CHA-2BA of 3,2x2,5x1,8 m, with 200 mm rockwool boxes with different densities compacted in 1.2 mm thick galv anized steel sheet to reach the 45 dB stipulated

- Evacuation stairs ventilation: In the ev acuation stairwyas, the aim was to put ov erpressure inside the lobbys in case of fire to av oid the smoke to get inside.

An air flow rate of 6,000 m3/h was set in the stairs lobbys to meet the specification of 50 Pa pressure in doors on both lev els.

In the stairways, in each case, two helical fans Sodeca CJHCH-634T-2 were installed. In this case the fans reach 1.5 kW at 1450 r.p.m. and 72 dB noise lev el.

- Technical rooms ventilation: Among the multitude of technical rooms at any subway station, the most important are the one where electrical transformers are located and the low v oltage room. In both, there is a significant heating load due to the work of transformers and electrical cabinets.

This is why it was decided to v entilate both rooms in order to av oid the temperature rise to lev els that would produce interruptions with the elements operation.

In the rest of rooms v entilation systems responded to a health standards reason because of its use, so it was solv ed with domestic extractors without notoriety.

Ciudad Aeroportuaria Station, L9 Barcelona Subway

Ventilation Project 2011

Presented next, another project within the implementation of Line 9 of Barcelona Subway (Phase 1): airport station. Essential station within this new transport line since it´s placed inside the Barcelona airport “El Prat”.

In all the stations that make up this metro Line 9, the technical requirements are quite similar, so basically the biggest problems arose meeting the minimum lev els of v entilation established in the protocol, dealing with the myriad changes of architecture giv en all along the execution process.

Therefore, data and materials described below are the final after ov ercoming the protocol procedures and being approv ed by TMB (Barcelona Metropolitans Transports).

As it happens in the prev ious project “Nov a Terminal".

Between some stations of Phase 1, v entilation shafts were installed in order to renew the air flowing through the sections between the subway stations. They are large and sophisticated fans that blow the warm and stale air outside, allowing the air exchange and renov ation in those areas.

In total, in the four shafts executed in this phase, the installation of next items and conditions was required: - 132 kW x 18 fans - Total air flow of 5,000,000 m3/h

Solar Thermal Energy Project 2008

Solar Thermal Energy project to produce DHW in a residential building in Mallorca. The building is formed by the next flats typology: - 4 1 piece flats - 21 2 pieces flats - 44 3 pieces flats - 17 4 pieces flats Building orientation: 26ยบ Southwest

Two independent Systems for the building halls were designed, with BT Solahart collectors due to the efficiency curv e and its dimensions: - Hall 1: 48 collectors (Absortion surface = 89,28 m2) Solar fraction cov ered: 72,97%

- Hall 2: 52 collectors (Absortion surface = 96,72 m2) Solar fraction cov ered: 70,89%

Regarding the exchange system between the solar production circuits we opted for plate heat exchangers:

- Hall 1: Sedical UFP-34/21 H-C de 48,5 kW - Hall 2: Sedical UFP-34/22 H-C de 52,6 kW

In this installation we chose to design a centralized accumulation and a subsequent serv ice to the different houses.

Thus, in both systems we proceeded to the installation of two 3,000 liters tanks, Lapesa MV-3000-RB (total v olume of 6.000 liters), meeting with the conditions stipulated Thermal Installations in Buildings Regulation.

The pumps chosen for the circuits in each system, all of them by Grundfos, were the ones as follows:

Finally, as alternativ e power system to guarantee the DHW required, it was decided to opt for electric power as energy source and heating water by electric heaters. Thus, depending on the size of each flat, different v olumes and consequently different power heaters were selected:

This power, in each case, was the minimum needed in order to raise the temperature of that v olume water from the public network temperature to 45 ° C in 2 hours time.

Grand symbolic Project that extends ov er 14.000 m2, composed of a offices building and a luxury hotel located in the same complex in Valencia most iconic entrance.

In the case of the office building, it was required to find a system that could prov ide a suitable facility for small indiv idual spaces, guaranteeing cooling them in the most efficient way possible. The main building features were: - 11 floors - 600 parking spaces - 123 Offices (80 m2 min.)

- Shopping Arcade

Between the two buildings there is a 6,000 m2 public square that links them on the ground floor and hosts a shopping mall. Pre-installation of air conditioning system was made, leav ing the choice to the premises owners to decide the rest of the system.

Regarding the Hotel Sorolla Palace 5 was necessary to install the latest technology taking care of the demanding interior design. Due to the use of the building, the cooling system was one fo the keys for the guests acomodation. Hence, this requirement was translated into a large dev elopment project to serv ice: - 14 plants - 20 Halls - 271 Rooms - Heated pool and gym

In both buildings, considering the energy consumption required and due to its compact design and the capacity to install each machine separately, it was decided to design a system of v ariable refrigerant flow (VRF) Mitsubishi City Multi.

HVAC and Solar Energy Project 2007

Cooling and solar energy project in a Outpacient Clinic managed by the Official Sanitary Department in Valencia suburbs with an area of 1,811 m2 on three floors.

The cooling system was composed by two v ariable refrigerant systems (VRF) structured in 2 circuits (North and South). Thus, the energy consumption is reduced thanks to the duality of the operation of the machines due to its operation in cooling and heating. Div iding the system according to the orientation of the building improv es the use in just one single mode and therefore it brings energy sav ing benefits.

It was decided to implement a system by Panasonic VRF: 27 duct units div ided in3 floors.

Comprehensiv e mechanical and electrical installations project for a nursing home located in Alboraya beach, next to Valencia.

Being a building for this purpose, the cooling system meant the more difficult serv ice giv en the required lev el of comfort.

- HVAC: For this building, according to kind of use, orientation and energy rationalization, a VRF system has been used. In this case we opted for a zonal div ision creating groups with same orientation, use and hours of operation.

Whereas for other facilities where the use is less continuous and intermittent, autonomous teams with indoor duct units were selected.

So, we decided to implement a Daikin VRF system with 73 duct units div ided in 6 floors.
