Looking down the timeline of me and Fletch working together, the F-Rocket was at the beginning. I didn’t know him that well yet, but I’d just started surfing for Patagonia and we were trying to dial in boards. I knew a spot in Chile that’s a great place to test big-wave boards, so we met up down there for the first real R&D for it. We wanted to make something that was high volume, easy to turn and could get into critical spots in bigger waves.
We had our first rendition of the F-Rocket with us; it was a 9’2” swallow tail quad, with not much rocker. From there it started evolving. That was in 2010, and we were writing down our ideas on the back of a menu at the restaurant we ate at. The board was based on one of Fletch’s other boards, the Fark, which is a bit of a hybrid, performance quad fish. We hadn’t named this one yet, but I think I threw out “frickin’ ... farkin’ ... fuckin’ rocket,” and “the F-Rocket” stuck.


We spent the next couple years doing R&D, surfing it all over the place. I rode a 7’6” at Teahupo’o and was able to get in early and get a few good ones. After, me and Fletch rewatched the footage in slo-mo and made adjustments. Then in 2011 at Cloudbreak, I had one of the most significant and best rides of my life. I was going hard that year, the swell came and I was feeling good about the board and felt like I was ready for anything. It was a magical day; perfect conditions, giant, long left barrels—big, blue, glassy, consistent. I wouldn’t have gotten into such a critical position on that wave if I didn’t have that board … I also might have made the tube if I was on

something longer. We studied that wave over and over and made some more changes.
Turns out, it’s also really fun in 4- to 6-foot waves. If you ride it as a twin, it becomes really versatile; then ride it as a quad when the waves are juicy. It’d be a good board for the weekend warrior, too, because it has the volume, paddles well,
turns and is stable. It kind of transcends the market from beginner to expert. I’d recommend it to anyone looking for something really versatile.
Fletch and the crew at FCD are really committed to their craft. It’s been fun to work with them for this long.

DURABLE RESINS AND FOAM CORES THAT ARE TESTED AND PROVEN BY OUR R&D TEAMS TO LAST
A LONG TIME AND TAKE A BEATING IN THE OCEAN.
Many of our shapes are made of recyclable EPS foam. However, we do incorporate polyurethane foam in our traditional logs to maximize glide. Our boards are laminated and sanded in our own glass shop next door, with custom epoxy resins that balance durability and flex. The result is longer-lasting surfboards that are light (where desired), tough and responsive.
FCD XEPS
We use our own proprietary foam in stock shortboards, hybrids, step-ups and some longboards. We recycle our foam scraps and it is food grade. As closed-cell EPS, this foam is very light and extremely strong. We create our own blanks using the XEPS foam.
MARKO® IFOAM
A slower elasticity, composite foam that works great in kite-specific surfboards. It absorbs speed chop, has an excellent memory for underfoot denting and durability, has great flex into fast turns and is closed cell and recyclable.
MARKO® BEADED EPS
Used in lighter, highperformance boards, big guns, boards for high-heat locations, shortboards and HP longboards. Due to the tight fusion between beads, this foam is very strong, yet lightweight. Recycled content and recyclable.
HIGH-DENSITY POLYURETHANE
Best for old-school Mals where weight is key for glide and momentum.
RESINS
We use epoxy resins only. Our resins are light, strong and produce less VOCs (volatile organic compounds) than traditional resins.
FIBERGLASS
We always use at least two layers on the bottom of our boards to increase strength and protect the integrity of the board when sanding. Our fiberglass weaves vary depending on use and need. If you have specific questions about the production of your board, please contact us, we are happy to help.
The FCD shop is a drop-off location for household EPS foam. Bring in your foam cups, to-go containers, packing peanuts, foam packing materials or coolers marked with the “#6” symbol and we’ll recycle with our foam scraps. Unfortunately, at this time, due to our limited storage space, we are unable to accommodate commercial drop-offs.
