5 Tips for Teaching Kids about Money 1. Chores. Talk to your kids about the difference between daily chores that are expected of them, and additional, allowance-earning chores. Allowance chores should be based on your child’s performance. 2. Offer Spending Guidance. Give your kids a piggy bank that splits money into three sections: one for spending, one for saving and one for giving and explain why giving is important. 3. Create a Simple Budget. Financial goals should help kids work toward specific rewards, such as a game or toy. A simple chart indicating how much money is coming in and how much goes out is enough to help your kids understand. 4. Give Positive Reinforcement. One of the best ways to teach your kids about money management is to offer lots of praise. When your kids do their chores and spend their money wisely, praise them.
