WHAT WILL YOU DO

WITH YOUR RETIREMENT PLAN MONEY? As you retire, you have three options: • Do nothing. Let the money sit in your employer’s 401(k) or pension plan (until age 70 1/2, when you must take at least minimum distributions). If your assets begin to lose value, that’s not a good idea.

• Withdraw the money and put it in a savings account.

The upside is, you have a great deal of money in your savings account. The downside is, you are going to pay income taxes next year to Uncle Sam. • Roll over and reinvest your retirement plan assets in an IRA or another vehicle that will allow the long-term taxdeferred growth of your savings. This gives you direct control of the savings that were once in your retirement plan, and allows you to position them in the way that you prefer for growth and retirement income.

If you choose the rollover, the procedure is easy. It takes: • Some paperwork • The permission of your company’s retirement plan administrator • A trustee-to-trustee transfer (which frees you from current tax liability for transferring the plan assets).
