Our Story... God is Great!!! David: I grew up in a wonderful Christian family. I accepted Jesus as my Lord and Savior as a child, and have always loved Him. God is my foundation and the only reason for my existence. My parents were often at church (and consequently so was I), and that is a good way to grow up - spending lots of time at a good church, helping everywhere that needed help. Goldie: I was born in India, to a loving and supportive family. I was raised a Hindu and was very satisfied with my relationship with god. After all, I was a good person. Jesus crossed my path several times but I resisted Him. I was always looking for information on God but never in the right place. I did not have a good impression about how Christians accepted non-Christians. When my husband, his family, and friends were wonderful to me, I attributed it to them being family and not to their Christianity. Riva from FCC’s Children’s Ministry was the first non-family/ friend Christian I interacted with, and even she was very accepting of me. God was sending people into my life who were slowly unblinding me so I might see that my family, friends, pastors, and people at FCC were doing what God wanted them to do. It was more than just not being judgmental - I was welcomed and accepted. This meant a lot to me. It opened my mind to knowing about the God whose followers were so good to me. God used my husband, his family, friends, and the people I met at FCC to change my attitude towards Jesus and give me a curiosity to know Him. When we were looking for daycare for our daughter Rita, someone at FCC recommended David and Deborah McCaine, who have since become close friends. Deborah slowly Spirit Newspaper • Winter 2016 • 2

convinced me to attend Bible study with her. Before I knew it, I was looking forward to Bible study and learning about God. Last year God let me know it was time (I resisted for two weeks before I had to surrender) and I said my prayer of repentance. When I think of my past, I can clearly see how God worked in my life and protected me, in my ups and downs, even though at the time I did not give Him credit for it. He is indeed a wonderful Father. David + Goldie: We met in 2008 when circumstances (or God) brought us together and kept bringing us together over the next year. Neither of us were looking for romance or a spouse, but we became very good friends through many, many hours of talking. Goldie had to return to India in 2009 because her visa was expiring. In March 2010, I proposed to her. She received a visa to return to the U.S. in October 2010 and we were immediately married in a court wedding with a few family and friends present (Goldie was a Hindu and did not want a church wedding). We had moved to the south San Jose area, and I had been skipping church for a while. Even though Goldie did not want to go to church, she encouraged me to resume going to church (she said she knew the person I am is a result of my relationship to God, and she didn’t want that to deteriorate), and so I started looking for a church to attend. I visited many churches. In the end, there was the big church that I liked but did not know anybody there (FCC), and a smaller church 10 miles away where my older brother had attended years before. I convinced Goldie and Rita to try them both. We decided

to go to the far away church, and Goldie and Rita often went with me, just so we could be together as a family. After a few months we didn’t feel like that church was good for us. Our then 4-year old daughter asked if we could go back to the church that she loved (FCC), where she got to make the fish and bread. We’ve now been attending FCC for over 3½ years and it is definitely our home. The messages are relevant and challenging, always thought provoking and drawing us closer to God and the life we should be leading. The music and singing during the service really create an atmosphere of worship. I know that even before Goldie became a Christian she found the messages interesting, stimulating, and challenging. In the time we’ve been at FCC, Goldie has become a Christian and was baptized, we had a new baby, and we renewed our vows in a church wedding!

ways to do that are to participate in the programs and especially to help out. Goldie has worked in Kidzplanet and done a few other odd jobs here and there, and we both sang in the choir. Through these and other activities we have made some good friends. You can have friends from work or your neighborhood or from school, but there is such joy and closeness when you get together with friends who serve the one true God! There have been times in our lives when God has shown us that His plans for us are better than ours, yet even we (Christians) tend to not have patience to wait for His plans to unfold. Looking back, we thank God for not always answering our prayers the way we wanted Him to. We’re so very fortunate that He is a good and loving Father.

W S Come visit this weekend! Sunday Worship Services 9:00 & 10:45 AM In FCC’s Main Auditorium Children’s Classes 9:00 AM: Nursery - Grade 4 10:45 AM: Nursery - Sr High

Rita loves going to Sunday school, Awana, and participating in the special programs. Through working in Kidzplanet and from talking with the people helping, we see how dedicated and loving Pastor Matthew and Riva and all the volunteers are to the kids. I’ve been to churches where the children and teenagers really don’t want to be there, but FCC is thankfully different.

Bible 75 Journey through ‘The Gospels’

Thursdays @ 7:00 PM - 8:15 PM in FCC’s Family Room

Young Adults in their 20s & 30s Tuesdays @ 7:30 PM in the Stage3 Auditorium Words are a very powerful thing. In Genesis chapter 1 the God of the universe used His words to shape, build, and create the world. So, at the beginning of every year, I ask the Lord for one word that will be my driving theme for that year. I’m a firm believer that specific prayers move God to specific results. So, the culture of Encounter has also been cultivated through this process of seeking a yearly theme. 2016 was known as the year of INCREASE, and that’s exactly what took place. Increase is defined as “to become or make great in size, amount, intensity, or degree.” When I heard this my mind went straight to us growing numerically (which we did!). In retrospect, I believe God was focused on growing us spiritually too, not just numerically. This year both certainly proved to be true. Recently God has been speaking to me about 2017 and what the new word is going to be for the new thing that He is going to do. What’s THE word? THE word is GOODNESS! 2017 is going to be The Year of Goodness and I can’t wait for you to join us for vision month at the

beginning of the year so I can explain this in greater detail! Every Tuesday night you will find hundreds of young people in their 20’s and 30’s gathering collectively in one space under the name of Jesus. These are people made up of different colors, ethnicities, races, genders, and cultures. These people have different backgrounds and experiences. The commonality we all share is that we understand we need a savior. The Encounter culture is loud, live, fun, rowdy, and maybe a little boisterous at times; but I wouldn’t have it any other way! As Encounter’s Pastor I would love for you to join us. We are a “come as you are” church! So, wherever you are, on your journey, please give this a try. It could be THE very thing you’ve been searching for. We have so many amazing things that are going to be happening, and numerous opportunities for you to get involved in this movement that is touching heaven and changing Earth. All you have to do is come and see. We can’t wait to see you!

Join us for a 75 minute in-depth Bible Study. Each week stands on its own. This is an exciting time of discovery of great truths in God’s word. Join us and connect with others as we dig deeper into the Bible! Come straight from work, or just want a night off from cooking? You can buy a full dinner for only $3 in our FCC Food Court any Thursday evening from 6-7 PM. We’re very informal and have a great time meeting friends while studying the Word each Thursday night! Real people. Real problems. Real solutions. Let’s get real together.

If You Are A Dreamer, Come In! By Pastor Michelle Sagor When I was a little girl, my favorite storyteller was Shel Silverstein. He had a way of always drawing me into the scene he had set. He authored one of the most fantastic books I read as a child, “Where the Sidewalk Ends”. I could imagine the pancakes stacked to the ceiling and the three-man crew in the flying shoe. My favorite was the little girl who was too sick to go to school until she found out it was a Saturday! I loved to escape into these far off lands where the possibilities of adventure seemed endless. As I grew older, I met and fell in love with the greatest storyteller of all time. The stories He told were so different from the ones Shel would imagine. This man told stories about the broken-hearted and the weak. The outcasts, the lonely, and the sick. He talked about how He loved them more than His own life. I read about how He spent quality time with those that society had rejected. He actually wanted to be around the people who didn’t have it all together. He walked the earth in a time of political unrest and religious tyranny. He had the power to strong arm the evil and unjust into submission yet He chose to soften hearts by scandalously loving and pursuing His beloved

Thursdays @ 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM

humanity. He chose to be around the criminals of that day: the tax collectors and prostitutes. He taught them to see themselves as He did, lovely works in progress... worth dying for. He was notorious for using the highly unlikely to accomplish the impossible.

Separation and Divorce hurt but you don’t have to go through it alone. DivorceCare meets weekly to help you face these challenges and move toward rebuilding your life.

I found myself right in the middle of the greatest love story ever told. This man, Jesus, rescued me from a life of uncertainty. He has placed me on the front lines, fully equipped and prepared to declare victory in His name. I am determined to be a fully devoted follower of His. We are living in such an exciting time. We are here for such a time as this. This world is desperate for a Savior and we have the only one!

If you’re ready to stop sitting on the side lines and want to get in the game, let’s go! There’s so much work to do and so many places we need to serve in order to get involved with the body of Christ. We are on mission to create fully devoted followers of Christ. This is war so let’s suit up!

Thurdays @ 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM If you’ve lost a spouse, child, family member, or friend, you’ve probably found there aren’t many people who understand the deep hurt you feel. CHILDREN‛S MINISTRY Sundays @ 9:00 AM & 10:45 AM ~ Nursery through Grade 4 Childcare for 18 months - Grade 5 Our Kidzplanet Children’s Ministry is a safe place where your children will have fun as they build a solid faith foundation. We offer classes that are age specific, exciting and God centered. All volunteers and leaders are carefully screened and supervised, and a stringent security process for all volunteers provides parents the assurance that their child is being well-cared for during the service. Our nursery through Kidzplanet Jr. rooms provide hands on activities, music, and an interactive Bible lesson from our caring leaders. Early childhood classes for 3 thru 5 yearolds also includes an exciting time in

our very own jump house room and playground. Our main Kidzplanet service, offers a place where children from first through fourth grade can discover and develop a passion for God. Through live worship, engaging teaching, and a variety of fun activities, children are exposed to God’s Word and challenged to grow in their relationship with Jesus. Join us this weekend or email Pastor Matthew at mtrujillo@fccchurch.net if you have any questions. We look forward to meeting you and your family and growing together.

principal. Others I know, who are those people, are business execs, business owners, college graduates, moms and dads, church leaders, you fill in the blank of those you respect. The biggest difference between someone recovering from a hurricane, cancer, crash, etc. and an emotionally hurting person is the help they have asked for and received.

WE WILL REBUILD! By Kim Sheffield Back in 2005 Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast of the US of A. (For those of you who are a little time-challenged, that is 5 years prior to the Giants winning their first of three World Series titles since 1954...which is, like, the Stone Age.) As you know, it was a devastating storm that killed thousands, displaced over a million people, and destroyed billions of dollars of property. There are places in the region that still show signs 11 years later of the destructive capabilities of Katrina. If you have not lived through something that powerful and devastating, you have no idea of what it was like. People’s lives are changed forever when you go through trauma like that. Disclaimer: I have no idea what it was like. If you “google” Hurricane Katrina now, you will get stories of the rebuilding, repopulating, and recovery of the area. Recovery is a good thing. I have a friend who got cancer at a (relatively) young age. She did all the things cancer patients do chemo, radiation, a wig or a scarf, cried, prayed, held loved ones, and thank God, she is cancer free today. Recovery is a good thing. I lost a huge amount of data from my computer once...or twice. That was scary and disheartening. When I went to the IT guys, they were able to recover the data I had lost. Seems they had backed up the servers when I had not backed up my computer. Phew! Yes, recovery is a good thing. Recovery is good, yet people go through trauma every day and we don’t even know it because they don’t talk about it. It is Spirit Newspaper • Winter 2016 • 10

so devastating on the inside emotionally, spiritually, mentally, and sometimes shows up physically - and it is still stigmatized in our world that we are too embarrassed to talk about our emotional trauma. We are embarrassed because it may look odd in how it comes out physically or verbally. • The adult who was raped as a child may turn to porn, feel ashamed, but unable to stop and not talk to people about it. • The person whose parent did not let them go anywhere or do anything because of his/her own fears and insecurities may be a control freak, driving everyone close, away. • The person abandoned by a divorce, either as a child or adult, may look to drugs to feel better and finds himself trapped in a downward spiral of self-loathing and fear, wondering what life is like pain-free. Yes, recovery is good, and it is for everyone - those who suffer materially, physically, AND emotionally. We talk about “recovery” and for the cancer survivor, hurricane survivor, crash survivor, it is an open conversation and exciting as we or our family and friends heal and recover. For those struggling with bad habits caused by emotional trauma, we whisper about them and wonder why don’t they just stop doing what they are doing to hurt themselves and those around them. I know a guy who used to talk about “those people” referring to addicts and the like. Thing is, he was one of those people, but didn’t know it at the time. “Those people” are us. I am one of those people and I am a school

We don’t talk about emotional trauma. Heck, many of us don’t even or can’t even talk about the event or events that caused the trauma. People are suffering silently in pain all around us; everywhere we go. They just don’t know how to talk about getting the help they need to get the recovery God wants them to have. There is hope! We have at Family Community Church a group that meets every Thursday evening starting at 7:00 PM called Celebrate Recovery. We are specifically designed to help those who struggle with bad habits stemming from emotional trauma. We are called Celebrate Recovery because we celebrate the healing that God provides for our emotional trauma. We are here to see each other heal and live healthy lives. Reach out for help just like you would if your home was destroyed or you got physically sick. Your pain is no less real and the healing is AMAZING! “Jesus said, “I have come that they may have life, and have it in all its fullness.” John 10:10 Do you want rest from the endless cycle of pain? I have a prescription for you and it’s not more cowbell. It’s Celebrate Recovery. See you Thursday at 7:00 PM in the Chapel Auditorium.
