OUR FCC STORIES... Zack’s Story... I’m 25 years old and have been walking with the Lord for 10 months. In my life, I have learned and experienced a lot of what this world has to offer. I have gone through divorce, drugs, sexual assault, and a lot of violence in my years. However, the 10 months I’ve been with the Lord, I can firmly say have been harder. I don’t say this to scare anyone, I say this with all the love that I can give because it has set me free from things that kept me stagnant. God has forced

Michelle’s Story... I met the Lord at the age of 8. My parents had just divorced and my mom moved me and my 5 siblings from California to Mississippi to live with my grandparents. My grandfather was a pastor. He read the Bible to us daily and taught us about God and His love My mom remarried 3 times and we moved a lot, but God was my constant through it all. We ended up moving to Arizona my senior year of high school. I went through a rebellious stage with the new friends I made and only went to church periodically. After I graduated, I decided to move to California to get to know my dad again. I was 18 and had no friends and was not connected to any community. My aunt and uncle were playing softball for FCC at the time so I started going to their games. Eventually I started going to services as well. At first, I would Spirit Newspaper • Fall 2016 • 2

me to deal with my issues. I am so thankful because dealing with my issues, rather than ignoring them or numbing myself, is something I never felt I was capable of doing. The Lord has refurbished me into who I am today. The best part about it is that I am now capable of sharing my testimony with others. Change is far from being comfortable or easy. It requires patience, consistency, strength, and a plethora of other character traits. The awesome thing is that the Lord helps develop these traits and many come and sit through service and go straight home. I didn’t really connect with anyone until I started serving. Pastor Tony invited me to help in the Young Adults group by doing media and lights. I started getting to know people and made friends. Nothing could have prepared me for the family I have found here. I have been at FCC for close to 16 years now. This family has mourned with me through my toughest times and has celebrated with me through the wins. There is nothing I wouldn’t do to see this home thrive. Finding this family has been the biggest blessing in my life. I am now the Connect Pastor here at FCC. My heart is to help people realize whose they are and to help them know they are beyond loved by Him. My journey is only beginning. The best is yet to come.

others. He is freely generous with gifts that truly matter. Growing up my father used to say, “ Zack, nothing in this world is free.” I used to believe that...until I met the Lord. Walking through the doors at Encounter, FCC’s Young Adults ministry, changed my life forever. The atmosphere created at Encounter, as well as FCC as a whole, allows you to meet the Lord face to face and learn how to meet with Him on a daily basis. FCC is the place to go to find family and community, which are

Stefan’s Story... II didn’t grow up in a Christian household. However, I did grow up with two parents who loved me and taught me how to live a purposeful, fun, and happy life.

I didn’t go to church unless I slept over at my friend’s house on a Saturday night. I didn’t have a relationship with Jesus. In fact, when it came to religion, I would say I was intrigued, not interested. I received my first invite to Encounter one year prior to my first time going. I was blown away by the community and how passionate young adults could be about Jesus. I attended off and on for about 3 months, until I experienced something which, looking back, was clearly God Himself... My friends and I were planning to go to a scavenger hunt in San Francisco, hosted by NBC’s The

very important when trying to work through and unravel issues in your life. I’ve been attending less than a year and I can say with complete honesty, this is my family. The culture at FCC is built off of selflessness. As it says in Luke 10:27, ”You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your strength, and all your mind. And, Love your neighbor as yourself.” At FCC, you’ll find people who legitimately care for one another. The Lord and FCC have together saved another life. This church will forever be home in my heart! Voice. The first 6 people to finish were given the opportunity to audition. However, the day before, I came down with what I believed to be strep throat. My friends went ahead without me. They ended up finishing first. If I had gone, I would’ve had an audition. This made me furious, as I felt fine soon after they left. I couldn’t understand how I could come down with a sickness so suddenly, for it to be lifted just as quickly. I deemed it as life being unfair. Little did I know, it was the Lord’s hand on the situation. I now attend Encounter and FCC regularly and realize God has bigger and better things for me. I serve on the worship and writing teams, singing and writing songs/ poetry, all under God’s name. Everyone has a role to play in God’s kingdom. I came to terms with my role after humbling myself, tossing away my ego, and deciding to follow Jesus. I will forever be grateful for my His plans for my life.

Guest Speaker, Valorie Burton @ FCC Sunday, August 28 @ 9:00 AM & 10:45 AM services Join us as she speaks on “Bouncing Back from Setbacks” No matter what the goal, it is almost guaranteed there will be obstacles along the path to your vision. And the most successful people in the world are masters at bouncing back from setbacks. Whether the setback is small (such as an argument with your spouse, or an unexpected expense that threw off your spending plan this month) or large (such as layoff at work, cancer or a divorce), your focus in life must continually be to recover from the unwanted detours so that you can stay on your path and enjoy victory. Use this checklist to give yourself a “resilience checkup.” Check every statement that is true for you today: 1. I know my purpose and live it every day. 2. I am not withholding forgiveness from anyone. 3. Fear is not stopping me from moving forward on my most meaningful goals. 4. I maintain a positive outlook most of the time. 5. I have a strong support system of friends and family. 6. I am spiritually mature and aware of God working in my life. 7. I am in a good place emotionally. I am whole and well. 8. My life is fulfilling and meaningful. 9. I have a deep sense of joy, and experience inner peace daily.

Mexico Missions Trip November 10 thru 13 FCC is partnering with Baja Christian Ministries to help build homes in Tijuana, Mexico. Our team will provide 3 16’ x 20’ 3-room, weatherproof homes with a loft and two latrines for a poor family living in slum-like conditions. The houses are durable, efficiently designed, and serve families for many years. Families or individuals are welcome! Join us at our Information Meeting Sunday, August 28 @ 12:30 PM in Room 253 Questions? Email Pastor Kandis at kharvey@fccchurch.net

10. In the last major challenge I faced, I was able to bounce back and move forward quickly. 11. In a crisis, I usually remain calm and take action that is helpful to the situation. 12. I can tolerate uncertainty without a high level of anxiety. 13. Those who know me best would describe me as “adaptable to change.” 14. I am lighthearted and try to find humor even in difficult circumstances. 15. I enjoy discovering new ways to do things. 16. I am a good problem solver. 17. I always learn and find ways to apply the lessons from my past experiences. 18. I am comfortable being myself. 19. I am an empathetic listener. 20. I’ve found purpose in my painful situations and believe all things work together for good. Which statement did you most wish you could check off, but it simply isn’t true for you right now? Don’t beat yourself up about it. What goal could you set to enable you to be able to check off that statement in the future? By when will you reach that goal?

Sunday, August 28 @ Family Community Church Valorie will share ways you become resilient by “Bouncing Back From Setbacks!” Spirit Newspaper • Fall 2016 • 3

“Crash The Chatterbox ... Hearing God’s Voice Above All Others” Offered two different times: Tuesdays @ 6:30-8:00 PM, September 6 - October 18 AND Thursdays @ 7:00-8:30 PM, September 8 - October 20 You know that voice. That little voice inside your mind that says you’re not good enough to do what needs to be done, that you don’t have value, or a purpose. We don’t want to listen to these thoughts, but sometimes we do, and they stunt our growth and potential for how God wants to use us in this life. Author and Pastor Steven Furtick struggles with these negative thoughts too, but in looking at God’s Word he’s found the strength to combat them with truth and turn off the “chatterbox” running in his mind. This powerful series will help you see for yourself why listening to God’s voice above all others is the most important habit you can ever develop.

Young Adults in their 20s & 30s Tuesdays @ 7:30 PM in the Stage3 Auditorium I don’t have words to fully express what God is doing in and through FCC Encounter. All I know is that everything that has taken place over the last year is nothing short of a miracle... but there are greater things to come. My name is Chase Wiggins and I am the Pastor of FCC Encounter. When you walk into Encounter on a Tuesday night, you can expect to see hundreds of young adults that look very different. These young adults come from different backgrounds, and are made up of different cultures. These young adults have been through different experiences and live different lifestyles. However, the commonality is that these people are all gathered to meet with a God who loves them all divinely.

Over the last 3 years we have grown tremendously in every way, but mostly in our love for God and people. I can promise you as the Pastor of Encounter, if you come on Tuesday night, you will feel the love of people, but most importantly the love of God.

Young Married’s Ministry

We have a lot of amazing things coming up this year and my heart is that you would join us on this amazing journey. Regardless of what you’ve done, where you’ve come from, or what you believe; please know that you can come as you are. Though we have not met, we (Encounter) love you, and we cannot wait to meet you Tuesday at 7:30 PM.

“Here & Now... There & Then, A Lecture Series on Revelation”

Saturday, August 27 @ 9:30 AM - 12:30 PM

by Beth Moore

Special Guest Speaker: Valorie Burton

Valorie Burton is coming to speak to us about her latest book, Happy Women Live Better. Women have more education, more money, and more choices than ever before. Yet, research shows we are less happy today than women 40 years ago. If we can “have it all,” why is happiness declining? In Happy Women Live Better, Valorie Burton reveals 13

happiness triggers, which are choices that can boost your joy right now, even in the midst of deadlines, children, marriage, dating, squeezing in a workout, or a girls’ night out.

It’s probably the most dynamic, attention-grabbing, talked about, hopefilled book in the Bible.

Tickets are $10 each, available online or at the door Pre-registered childcare available at $5 per child

I’m talking about the book of Revelation, and this study will help you realize. . . Revelation is not a book focused on worldly problems Revelation is a book of God’s provision!

It’s also probably the most misunderstood, misinterpreted, confounding, and mysterious book.

As you read those words, I imagine you have several questions that come to mind. (Most people do!) • “Why is the book of Revelation so confusing?” • “I’ve heard conflicting teachings about the end times—why is that?” • “Aren’t there more important things we can study?” If those questions (or others like them) come to your mind, this study group is going to be a tremendous encouragement to you as you dig into the Bible and find real answers. CELEBRATE RECOVERY Thursdays @ 6:00-8:30 PM, starting September 8th CR is a recovery program for anyone struggling with habits (physical or of the mind), or addictions, that effect life negatively and don’t allow us to know and live the abundant life Jesus promised us. CR is a safe environment where we can get the help, friendships, and strength to live one day at a time, trusting in Jesus, and using the tools we’ve learned in Celebrate Recovery. More Info: www.fccchurch.com/ministries/recovery

Real people. Real problems. Real solutions. Let’s get real together. (Celebrations in heaven; awesomeness!) The angels in heaven rejoice when a lost person believes in Jesus. Celebrating is a HUGE part of our life as human beings, created by God. There are other things we can and do celebrate too. We celebrate personal milestones and achievements.

Just Celebrate, Baby!

finale.” Seriously?

Everyone likes to celebrate.

How about a celebration for making it to Wednesday, huh? Who’s with me? For a while, my 5-year-old granddaughter believed that camels said, “Mike, Mike, Mike, Mike!” I am not sure where she got that idea. (It’s HUMP day!)

My son graduated from college after time in the Marines, having a baby, and working a job. Am I proud of him? As they say in North Dakota, “Oh, yeah. You betcha!” Did we celebrate? Oh, yeah. You betcha! Celebrating is a large part of life. We look for reasons to celebrate. Sometimes it’s a stretch, but we celebrate anyway: We made it to Friday. We survived 4th grade… for the third time. We got a new couch. My psoriasis is not acting up today. We love to celebrate. When I was a “teen” and the hip, rad, and happening thing to do was to have a “Youth Choir,” we sang (which is what youth choir’s did back in the day). The most popular musical I sang many times over many years with a number of choirs was called “Celebrate Life.” Celebrate. TV is forcing some celebrations by having their “midseason finale,” their “end-of-calendaryear finale,” and their “prefinale

Real celebrations, not forced ones, are very important for all us humans. We like to celebrate. Births and birthdays, weddings and anniversaries, preschoolKindergarten-6th grade-8th gradehigh school-college graduations, first jobs, new jobs, promotions, any and all milestones; we celebrate. Very recently a friend had openheart surgery and a week later went home feeling and looking great! Let’s celebrate, right?! The Bible is full of stories of celebration. David celebrated and danced. (My wife told me to never dance in public. I guess I won’t celebrate like that… at least publicly.) Zacchaeus threw a party for Jesus when he was changed by God’s power. Jesus started a parable with, “The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave a wedding feast for his son.”

Some of those milestones include becoming better, healthier people: • We made mistakes in the past and then slowed down the pattern or didn’t make the mistakes again. That is cause to celebrate. • When we overcome negative beliefs we may have been told by our parent, that is cause to celebrate. • Celebration happens when we recognize unhealthy relationships, figure what our part in that relationship is, and end our part in the unhealthiness. • ......Sometimes for reasons we may not completely understand, we take on bad habits like drinking too much, or medicating with drugs, or numbing out with food, pornography, or isolation of any kind. When we recognize those harmful patterns and do something about it through surrender to God and accountability with others, we are freed from those chains – that is a reason to celebrate. Family Community Church has a ministry starting back up to help us with our problems and to help us celebrate when we, through the amazing power of God, overcome the bad habits we found ourselves struggling with. It is called, appropriately enough,

Celebrate Recovery. Like the friend of mine who is recovering from open-heart surgery, Celebrate Recovery is there to help us all to recover from the heart problems we find ourselves dealing with. You know what I mean: • You seem to repel the opposite sex and don’t know why and you desperately want to a long-lasting relationship. • You spend way too much time avoiding relationships and finding excuse after excuse to watch TV, do yard work, or just not come home. • You value things that don’t care about you and reject those people who do. Jesus said, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” Celebrate Recovery is the place that puts proven practices in place to help us get the rest Jesus wants us to have. That’s it. That’s what we do. There are two voices calling inside us. One wants us to wallow in mediocrity and pain of what could have been. The other is the voice of God telling us to be free and “Just celebrate, Baby!” At Celebrate Recovery our motto is: “Real people, real problems, real solutions. Let’s get real together.” Come on! Who’s up for a celebration? Written by Kim Alan Sheffield. Kim is a grandfather, father and husband.
