A Fresh Start ... How fitting that a fresh start for our family in San Jose, CA would come courtesy of a search engine! The year was 2011, my husband Dre, had accepted a job in Silicon Valley and moved our family of four from the U.K. to the United States. One of our first priorities was to find a vibrant, thriving church and our internet search revealed Family Community Church right at the very top! As a multicultural family, I am from the U.K. and Dre is from Italy, we were immediately drawn to the diversity at FCC, its welcoming atmosphere and the incredible amount of activities for our teenage boys, Lucas (17) and Leo (14). Soon after attending, we joined the worship ministry and the rest, as they say...is history. Fast forward four years - I am now the Worship Pastor at FCC and Dre serves as the Musical Director. FCC has been an anchor of safety and security at a time of great change for us, and we are grateful for the safe, fresh start it allowed us to make by providing sound

Bible teachings in a friendly, loving atmosphere. We have experienced first-hand the number of lives that have been changed, not only by the teachings of Pastor Bill, but also by the practical, no-strings attached love that permeates the activities and outreaches of our church. From the ladies “Coffee Talk” events (a favorite of mine) to free oil changes for single moms and the elderly (a favorite of Dre’s), FCC has a ton of activities and programs that will encourage you, help you and show you the love of Christ in everything they do. We are so honored to serve in our community by leading the worship ministry, starting each service off with uplifting, encouraging music to help you find peace in your heart and prepare for incredible messages each week. We both love what we do – trying to blend the flavor of contemporary worship music and the power of traditional gospel tunes with the incredible talent of a top-notch band.

Our boys, too, are involved in music. They serve on a number of bands, from the KidzPlanet Children’s Ministry to the main service, but Stage 3 – FCC’s youth ministry – is where they truly call home. Stage 3 has been and still is a major influence in their lives, with age-appropriate services and fun events like the recent Boys Night all-nighter with endless pizza and video games. Lucas will graduate next summer from high school, and we look forward to him joining Encounter, the FCC group for young adults with his “big brother” Pastor Chase. Encounter is a growing, happening group of young people making a difference in the community of Silicon Valley and having fun in the process. So – come check FCC out! Whatever stage of your life you are at, there are countless opportunities for you. Maybe, just maybe, this can be a church home for you and allow you to have – like we did – a fresh start! ~ Lily, Dre, Lucas and Leo

Baby Dedications Sunday, January 10 During 10:45 AM Service for children 5 and under

The Bible says that a baby is a blessing from God. When you decide to dedicate your son or daughter, you are acknowledging the awesome responsibility God has given you in raising your child. A baby dedication is a ceremony that expresses your desire as parents to raise your son or daughter in the ways of the Bible and to ask God to use your child for His purpose. BAPTISM SUNDAY

December 13 & February 28 9:00 AM & 10:45 AM

Celebrating Changed Lives If you’d like to be baptized, plan to be here at one of these services! At the end of the service, you will be invited forward for baptism. Bring a change of clothes, and invite your friends and family to come celebrate with you! What is Baptism? Baptism illustrates Christ’s burial and resurrection. “Christ died for our sins. He was buried and He rose again,” the Bible says, “for when you were baptized you were buried with Christ and in baptism you were also raised with Christ.” At FCC, we baptize the way they did in the Bible - putting people all the way under the water. At FCC, we do not baptize babies

or young children. We believe that baptism is a personal declaration of your new life as a follower of Jesus Christ. We believe you should be baptized if you are a new believer, have rededicated your life to Jesus, or were baptized as a child and now want to follow Jesus’ example of public confession of your faith as an adult. Children and youth under 13 years of age who are interested in being baptized must attend our Baptism Classes on Dec. 6 or Feb 21. For information, e-mail Pastor Matthew at: MTrujillo@FCCchurch.net. Please visit our website at:

Young Adults - Ages 18-37 - Weekly Services Tuesdays @ 7:00 PM in the Stage 3 Audtorium 2015 is coming to a close and what a wild ride it has been. A little over 2 years ago, Encounter started with 15 people. Last week, over 300+ young adults from all over the Bay Area came to worship our great God. 2015 has been a year of victory, and battles; but God has proven himself faithful time and time again. There is no doubt that He has done great things, but I believe that greater things are ahead for the young adults of FCC, and my heart is for you to be a part of it. We live in the most un-churched area in the United States, and the heart of Encounter is to reach the 98% unchurched people of our community. If you were to show up on a Tuesday night at 7:00 PM it would not be what you expect. You would see a church that is loud and expressive in the way that it worships God. You would see beautiful young people from different backgrounds, ethnicities, genders, and

cultures. You would see people who are rich, sitting next to people who are homeless. You will see the nameless next to the famous. You will see people who have been in church their entire lives, next to people who have never set foot in church. You will see vibrant worship, a relevant word, and a community of people who love Jesus and each other. I am a firm believer that you don’t have to believe to belong, and Encounter has been built on the truth of that statement. So, now the question is will you come? I’m so serious that I am going to ask again…Will you come? Every week church GOESSSS UPPPPPPP on a Tuesday night, and we would love to have you simply come and see what God is doing. If you are between the ages of 18-37, I can promise you that you will leave different then you walked in. I look forward to meeting you this week!

The Sweet Life ~ Women’s Conference March 4-5, 2016 ~ Modesto, CA Our theme this year is Real Stories. It can be so easy when you ‘get real’ to ‘get down’ thinking about the trials of life. But that isn’t what the conference this year is about. When I think of a woman sharing her real story, I think of joy, triumph, and overcoming. I think of victory and gladness. I think of salvation coming to those who listen. I hope you’ll join us for a great event full of fun surprises, laughter, worship and Holy Spirit power! I can promise you this… God has something special in store.

Being a Strong Father in a Culture of Weak Men... By Kevin East

B

oys should be able to describe what a godly man looks like, having watched one from the time they were a little boy. Unfortunately, this isn’t the case for most. For many boys, a godly man is something like Superman or Big Foot. It is not something that can be grasped. A couple of weeks ago I brought my two boys with me to a home and garden center. As I was checking out, the old man behind the counter stopped me in my tracks with what he said. My boys were off to the side, gently playing with the wind chimes. They, too, didn’t know how to respond to the old man’s comment. “What are you two girls up to today?” I don’t think he meant anything bad by it. It’s not like they were in trouble or something. Rather, he was probably just a good-ole country boy looking to ruffle some feathers in my sons. My boys sheepishly smiled, and even softly replied, “We’re not girls.” Unfortunately, my reply was equally as soft. “Oh, boys, he’s just being crazy saying you are girls.” It wasn’t until I was driving away did I begin kicking myself. I realized I missed an opportunity to speak into my sons. They needed me to. They were watching how I would handle that situation. That day my boys needed a strong father. I have seen so many weak boys get married, begin working, and even start reproducing with their new brides. They wouldn’t tell you they are weak – probably because they don’t know they are. For years I have quoted a verse that jumped out at me the first time I read it: “Praise the Lord! Blessed is the man who fears the LORD, who greatly delights in his commandments! His offspring will be mighty in the land.” Psalms 122:1,2a As a father, I pray that my boys will grow up to be strong, godly men. In the meantime, there are certain things I hold to in an effort to help lead them that way. 1. Show them the power in weakness. We’ve been led to think that broken, emotional, and dependent men are all signs of a lesser male. This is a

6. Teach them The Story. As they grow up, I want to continue to unfold the story of God to them. It’s not just about memorizing Scripture. It is about them coming to understand God as Father. They need someone who can hear their tough questions about God, and dig through the Scriptures to help uncover the answer. And when those times come when we don’t fully understand the answer, I want to explain to them exactly what faith is, and how it is something to not be afraid of.

lie. I want all my kids to hear from me about my imperfection. I want them to hear how grateful I am for the grace of God. That grace will bring me to tears at times. It does because it is overwhelming. It is freeing. As opposed to teaching them to pull themselves up by their bootstraps, I want them to learn what it’s like to approach a powerful, mighty, gracious God who welcomes dependent, broken, faith-filled people. 2. Help them realize their strength. I consider it “papa bear” time. I’ve been wrestling with my kids since they were babies. They’re getting to that age where their punches actually hurt. With each of their best wrestling moves or carefully placed punches, I let them know I see an improvement in their strength. This is something I never want them to question. They have what it takes.

By the way, after a few weeks of stewing on how I handled that old guy at the home and garden center, I brought my boys back. I brought them in to dare him to say something like he did before. I felt like John Wayne, calling out a man to a duel. Sure enough, he was there, right behind the same counter he was before. I walked straight up to him and looked him square in the eyes. Unfortunately, he didn’t go running his mouth that day. BUT, if he had, I was prepared to tell him this: “Oh, these aren’t girls. They are future men. And each day it is my responsibility to teach them how to get there!” Kevin East is the President of the Boys & Girls Clubs of East Texas. Kids Club Outreach After School Program Stipe Elementary -Tuesdays Oakridge Elementary - Thursdays

FCC is privileged to sponsor a faith based after-school program at two schools in south San Jose. Kids Club is a free after-school program designed to teach positive life skills to children through games, music, and Bible discussions. Through Kids Club, FCC is able to help kids build relationships, find out who God is, and learn how much He loves them. Contact Riva Trujillo RTrujillo@FCCchurch.net

3. Model for them how to love and honor their wife. When my kids were little, they would cry if we told them we were going on a date. Now it is such a regular event that they barely notice. We’ve explained many times that mommy and daddy love each other, so we want to go spend time together – just the two of us. They see me get excited about a gift idea, and they help me surprise my wife in unexpected ways. I hope that someday I will be able to help them surprise their wives as well. 4. Teach them to fight fairly. My wife and I get under each other’s skin at times. We conflict. We bicker. We snip at each other. I can be grumpy, or too curt. My kids get front row seats to all this. I don’t want them to wonder if they have a bad marriage someday because they are arguing with their spouse. I want them to see that conflict is a good thing. It brings growth, freedom and friendship if done well. 5. Provide an apprenticeship. I love it when my boys work around the house with me. So many teachable moments open up as we are building a bike rack (like last weekend) or splitting firewood in the backyard.

con’t >> of Rights says is “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.”

A Charlie Brown Christmas! By Kim Sheffield I will let you in on a little secret. Promise not to tell anyone because it will change the way we think about certain days and seasons. It will shock your socks off! OK. Maybe that is an exaggeration, but promise anyway. OK? But first, a story. I am a teacher and for many years I had the privilege of teaching U.S. History to 8th graders. I say “privilege” because I like U.S. History. There are some pretty amazing events and other stuff (a word we historians use…it has deep meanings) that make U.S. History very exciting. 8th grade students are different than 7th grade students because 7th graders think they are funny. They think they are hilarious. They think they invented humor. 8th grade students have a little maturity (“little” being the key word in this sentence) and are able to think more, not just laugh at how funny they think they are. Each November, I would ask my students, “Who are the Pilgrims giving thanks to in this Thanksgiving season?” Their response, year after year, was the same; the Pilgrims were giving thanks to the Indians who had helped them survive in the new world. Side note: Middle School kids would also overwhelmingly want to vote for democrats when we would do mock elections. When I finally asked them why, their response was that since they were for democracy, they were for democrats – thinking that democrats were for democracy and republicans were not. End Side Note. At first, their answers surprised me, but as time went on, I realized something. As I pressed them for the “why” of their answer it was not what I expected. I expected them to say things like, “It’s what our Kindergarten (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th) teachers taught us.”

They did not say that. They used logic. Their logic was that the Indians taught them how to farm and what to farm in the new world, therefore, when they got together for the first Thanksgiving feast, they were thanking the Indians. Makes sense, riiiiiiiight? Before I tell you the secret, I have another story for you. Reading through the news online a while back, I saw an article that was entitled, “Some Want to Remove Christ from Christmas.” Does anyone see the absurdity in that headline? Here is the secret – The holidays we celebrate as the year comes to a close are uniquely godly holidays. We give thanks to God at Thanksgiving for what he has done for us. It started with the Pilgrims thanking God (and yes, they thanked the Indians also because they saw the help they received from the Indians as given from God) and has become a national holiday. Abraham Lincoln in 1863, after admitting that God’s mercy has sustained the country in a difficult time, called on the people of the United States to “set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens.” Christmas…Christ mass…Christ, Messiah, God’s Son, Jesus’s birthday. We all know the story of Christmas as told by Linus on the empty stage in “A Charlie Brown Christmas.” How in the world can you take Christ out of his own birthday celebration?! Granted, Jesus was most likely not born on December 25, but still it is beyond me. I know, I know. Lawyers, courts, and atheists argue that the government cannot favor one religion over another. What the first amendment of the Bill

Congress cannot make a law establishing a religion (which was a direct response to the Church of England which was the only religion allowed in England at the time). However, the Constitution does not limit the President from making Christmas a national holiday, which is why every year it is a national holiday (or at least a day off most everyone except for 7-11 workers). It is also why the President of the United States has made Thanksgiving, a holiday to thank God for his goodness to us. Another Side Note: the very word, holiday, is a short version of the phrase “holy day.” Holy refers to God’s sacredness. So when you wish someone a “nice holiday,” you are wishing him or her a “nice day of God’s sacredness.” So…

“And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flocks by night, and lo the angel of the Lord came upon them and the glory of the Lord shone round about them, and they were sore afraid, and the angel said unto them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David, a savior, ‘tis Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you. You shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly hosts, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.” That’s what Christmas is all about Charlie Brown.
