The mystical body of Christ is not new, for it is embodied in the teachings of Christ and repeatedly emphasized by Saint Paul. The Christine doctrine of love is one of the most widely discussed subjects of contemporary Christian theology and ethics; and this book by Anders Nygren, Bishop of Lund, has become the indispensable point of reference for such discussion. After establishing the fundamental motifs of agape and eros Bishop Nygren traces the development of the agape motif through the New Testament and Paul's theology toward its final formulation and the eros motif through Plato, Aristotle, and Neoplatonism.

Speaking with understanding and power, the author makes a basic analysis of love, power, and justice, all concepts fundamental in the mutual relations of human beings, of social groups, and of man and God. His concern is to penetrate to the essential, or ontological, foundation of the meaning of each of these words and thus to save them from the vague talk of idealism, cynicism, and sentimentality with which they are usually treated.

Vatican Council II, drawing on the powerful forces of renewal which have been at work now for decades in the Church, has made us joyously aware of the wonderful dynamism of the nature of the Church in the world. As Bishop Carter pointed out, whereas previous Councils were primarily concerned with the definition or redefinition of truths, Vatican II's primary goal was to reestablish contact with the modern world... It is in this perspective of the mission of the Church that the present book intends to present an overview of the situation, problems, and possibilities of transmitting the Christian message.

Offers an incisive yet comprehensive introduction to the nature and problems of the Christian faith in the modern world. The message is not one of confusion and uncertain experiment but of trust and hope. The author examines the situation, location, truth, act, content, ecclesiolatry and historicity of faith, shows its saving assurance, anchors it in Christology, and reminds us of its direction to the one future of God. Organized as a companion volume to Karl Rahner's master workhis Foundations of Christian Faith- A World of Grace can also be used as a general introduction to the major themes and fundamental principles of Rahner's theology as a whole. Each chapter provides a broad commentary on the corresponding chapter of Foundations, beginning with Rahner's method and anthropology and concluding with his theology of the church and The editors have assembled the writings of important contemporary theologians and philosophers in order to present a comprehensive anthropology which moves toward a Christian understanding of the human person. The four major human relationships are explored in depth: relationships with the other, the material world, with others, and with self.

Psychiatry

Carl Gustov Jung: (/jʊŋ/;[3] German: [jʊŋ]; 26 July 1875 – 6 June 1961) was a Swiss psychiatrist and psychoanalyst who founded analytical psychology. His work has been influential in not only psychiatry but also anthropology, archaeology, literature, philosophy, and religious studies. As a notable research scientist based at the famous Burghölzli hospital, under Eugen Bleuler, he came to the attention of the Viennese founder of psychoanalysis, Sigmund Freud. The two men conducted a lengthy correspondence and collaborated on an initially joint vision of human psychology. Freud saw in the younger man the potential heir he had been seeking to carry on his "new science" of psychoanalysis. Jung's research and personal vision, however, made it impossible for him to bend to his older colleague's doctrine and a schism became inevitable. This division was personally painful, and was to have historic repercussions lasting well into the modern day. Jung was also an artist, craftsman and builder as well as a prolific writer. Many of his works were not published until after his death and some are still awaiting publication. Among the central concepts of analytical psychology is individuation—the lifelong psychological process of differentiation of the self out of each individual's conscious and unconscious elements. Jung considered it to be the main task of human development. He created some of the best known psychological concepts, including synchronicity, archetypal phenomena, the collective unconscious, the psychological complex, and extraversion and introversion.

Among the questions answered are: Why do animals of one species fight each other, and why do humans do the same? Is there really a sinister instinct of self destruction which is counterpart to Psychiatry all other instincts preserving the life of the individual and species, and which threatens humanity with annihilation? The late arrival of formation as a science is due to the fact that the empirical scientific approach itself is a relatively recent phenomenon in the formation of the human mind and its exploratory powers. It was first applied to the study of physical phenomena with results that changed the face of the earth. The method of positivistic sciences was generally adopted.
