A New Thing
A Message from Pastor Shawn This is what the Lord says— The One who made a way through the sea, a path through the mighty waters, who drew out the chariots and horses, the army and reinforcements together, and they lay there, never to rise again, extinguished, snuffed out like a wick: “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.” Isaiah 43:16-19 (NIV adapted) As we begin a new year it is evident that God is doing a “New Thing” around here. After the last two years especially, we have come to realize that we cannot assume that a new year is going to pan out as we expect. And yet, despite the fact that the last two years have screamed out this reality, it is true every year. We begin this year with some big changes. We have said farewell to Richard Steffen who has faithfully served as our Minister of Music for 36 years. We are excited for him as he moves into a new phase with a little more free time! It is going to be different without him, and we will miss him in that role, but God is doing a new thing. We have welcomed to our staff Stephen Stark as our Senior Custodian. We are excited about the gifts that he brings to this position. We look forward to getting to know him better. God is doing a new thing. We have two search committees who are beginning work among us, looking for the staff that will come join our team and bring with them the gifts that God has given them for such a time as this in the life of our church. God is doing a new thing.
Issue No. 1
Soon we will welcome Rhonda Bauer, who is coming as our Interim Choir Director. She will be with us for the next few months as we discern where God is leading us in our staff configurations in the future. God is doing a new thing. The Focus Group Task Force will be reporting their findings and recommendations at the Annual Meeting of the Congregation on January 30. We continue to pray for God’s guidance into the future ministry of our church. Even though change can be messy and even scary, we are confident that God is doing a new thing. When we look at this passage in Isaiah, we see that the prophet is reminding the people of God of the mighty and miraculous things that God has done in the past. If one would think about it, those things celebrated in the past, at the time, were messy and scary. Just as making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland disturbs the existing terrain—it could even feel like an earthquake—it is what brings new life and refreshment. As we look at what God is doing with and for us at this time, we must realize that new life comes with God doing a new thing. What new thing is God doing in your life? Is it messy and scary—maybe even painful? What are the things that God has done in the past that you can hold on to as you remember God’s faithfulness to you? In what ways has God brought new life and refreshment in the past? Pray for the ability to trust God in the new thing that is being done in your life and the life of our church. Let us look with great anticipation to what God is doing to bring new life and renewed mission to our lives and our church. Let this be a part of our daily prayers! Let us encourage one another when we are disturbed by the messiness and scariness that comes along with the new thing that God is doing. God, the one who has done mighty and miraculous things in our history is now doing a new thing! Let us celebrate the new life that is coming, even as we reflect on the new things God has done in our past. See, God is doing a new thing! Happy New Year in Christ, Pastor Shawn
