Gratitude

A Message from Pastor Shawn

I am grateful to God—whom I worship with a clear conscience, as my ancestors did—when I remember you constantly in my prayers night and day. Recalling your tears, I long to see you so that I may be filled with joy. 2 Timothy 1:3,4 NRSV “Gratitude is… more than just an emotion. It is also a disposition that can be chosen and cultivated, an outlook toward life that manifests itself in actions—it is an ethic.”

Diana Butler Bass, Grateful: The Transformative Power of Giving Thanks

Issue No. 11

My favorite Thanksgiving dinner table is the one that is not perfectly rectangular because other tables have been added to make it so that more people can be there. I like it when the chairs don’t match, and two people must sit together on a piano bench because everyone wants to be at the table together. I enjoy finally sitting down together to eat all the foods that we have been smelling as they cook. And then there is the time when the eating slows down and we just enjoy each other’s company, the laughter, the stories, as we calculate how long it will take to make room in our stomachs for pie. It is a time of being thankful. As we approach the season of Thanksgiving, we naturally think about being thankful--or gratitude. In her book, Grateful, Diana Butler Bass talks about the centrality of Gratitude in the life of God’s Kingdom. In a world that is focused on possessions, materialism, this gratitude is different. It is a disposition toward life that understands God’s graciousness to us and therefore our living life among people with whom God is also gracious. As a result, we experience the goodness of generosity, which goes handin-hand with gratitude. There is no hierarchy with this generosity—it is not an act of power over someone. For that reason, we can choose and cultivate a way of living life that is steeped in gratitude and exemplified in generosity. Even our Thanksgiving traditions are marked by a combination of gratitude and generosity. Diana Butler Bass says that, while in the “world” power is like a pyramid, in the Kingdom of God it is like a table—a table that is big enough to seat anyone who wants to be there. As we celebrate the traditions of Thanksgiving by sharing around the table with family and friends (as much as is possible in these times) and as we practice the giving that we do so that families in our community are able to have food during this season, let us remember the graciousness that we have experienced from God in our lives. And may this life of gratitude and generosity not be limited to a season, but may we continually cultivate gratitude and generosity as a lifestyle that always works to make room at the table for any who wishes to be there.

Grace and peace in Christ, Pastor Shawn
