We enter the month of April well into our Lenten journey. Each Sunday the scriptures reveal another view of the wilderness. The devotions that we read daily that have been written by members of our church family, inspire and challenge through our journey. We find that God is there, walking with us, helping us to be transformed by this experience in the wilderness. It is not an overnight change, but it is one that takes time and intentional action. As we move into the darkness that accompanies Holy Week, we are reminded that even in the darkest times of our lives, God leads us to resurrected life. Hope springs forth. We look forward to the activities of Holy Week, including times of worship and reflection. We will begin with Palm Sunday morning worship with the waving of palms, and the joy of that worship service. On that evening we look forward to the opening of the art show that we will be having as we invite people from our congregation and from the community to share artistic expressions of “Hope Springs Forth. We will incorporate the art into our Maundy Thursday worship experience which will follow a shared meal together. On Good Friday we will host the community in an ecumenical Worship service at our church. All this will lead into Easter Sunday, when we will celebrate together the resurrection of Christ, our Lord.
The month of April is bookended by three mission trips. The team of 18 has just returned from 9 days serving in Puerto Rico. There is also a dental team of 9 which made its second trip this year to Tijuana to serve Haitian refugees as well as residents of Deborah House, a ministry to families affected by domestic violence. At the end of this month there will be a team going to serve at Rainbow Acres, a residential community for adults with special needs. The experience of each of these who have gone to serve brings a freshness to their lives that will overflow into the life of our church. Time in the wilderness often involves service to those who are in need and it becomes one of the ways that God shapes and transforms us. These kinds of experiences often give us new eyes as we look at our own community with its needs and opportunities. Hope springs forth! My prayer is that this Lenten season with its time in the wilderness, the beauty, darkness, and reflection of Holy Week and the celebration of Resurrection will be a time when each of us experiences hope springing forth in a new way as we walk with Jesus. In Peace and Christ, Pastor Shawn
