Our “Vision 2026: Deep & Wide: Deeper Roots, Greater Reach” finds its source in the imagery of Jeremiah 17:7-8: “But blessed is the one who trusts in the LORD, whose confidence is in him. They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.” Our prayer is that as we grow closer to Jesus, individually and corporately as a church, these roots of growing in a relationship with Jesus will branch out into greater reach into Washington County. More specifically, our prayer is that God will work in and through us to reach more people with the Gospel of Jesus Christ and to help Washington County families experience renewal and flourishing. Therefore, our “2026 Vision” is, “Out of the overflow of growing deeper in a relationship with Jesus, we pray we will see more lost people coming to know Jesus as their Savior and more Washington County families renewed and flourishing.” You can read the entirety of the vision by picking up a copy in the Commons or going to https://www.fbc-brenham.org/pages/vision-2026.

In our vision, the area focused on seeing more lost people coming to know Jesus as their Savior reads as follows, “Out of the overflow of the deepening roots of God working in us and our abiding in Jesus, our prayer and strategic areas of focus will be on seeing God use us to provide greater reach by addressing the needs of lostness and families in Washington County:

• Lostness: The language of “lostness” comes from the parables (stories) of “the Lost Sheep,” “the Lost Coin,” and “the Lost Son” that Jesus tells in Luke 15. These are stories of God’s pursuit of people who need Jesus. In each of the stories, there is rejoicing over a sinner repenting: “I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents han over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent” (Luke 15:7). No one cares more about people who need Jesus than God, and He is calling us to go to the same people He loves and love them and share the Good News (the Gospel) of Jesus Christ. Therefore, because lostness is the primary problem in Washington County, we will prayerfully pursue the following:

VISION 2026: DEEP & WIDE: DEEPER ROOTS, GREATER REACH

1. Enhance and Strengthen a Culture of Evangelism: We believe this cultural shift will be done by, at a minimum, focusing on prayer, training, and love. The call to tell people the Good News of Jesus is first and foremost a call to pray. The call to pray is also a good reminder that we “cannot convert anyone”; we are called simply to be faithful in telling others the Gospel. Someone coming to faith in Christ Jesus is ultimately a work of God (Luke 18:27). Second, we will train people in ongoing ways in how to share the Gospel and answer questions people may have, provide opportunities to invite people to church, and equip people to see every area of life as a place to live “on mission.” Finally, we will remember that telling others about Jesus is rooted in loving people and building relationships with them. As we have opportunity, we will speak the Good News of Jesus to those who do not know Jesus. If they reject the Good News, we will not reject them; we will continue to love them, pray for them, and be their friend.

-Objective: We will double the number of our baptisms each year.

2. Staff for Outreach: We will give a special focus and emphasis on staffing with a focus on local and global outreach (i.e. towards growing and strengthening our local ministry partnerships, evangelism training, serving with our national and international partnerships, and mission trips, etc.). The staff position may be solely focused on these areas or combined with another area of ministry focus.

-Objective: By the start of 2025, we will have added a new pastoral or ministry director position or reorganized the staff in such a way for the position with these areas of focus.

The Church Council has been focused on the “Staff for Outreach”section since last summer. Beginning in August of 2024, Pastor Ross, who is also a member of the Church Council, formed a team of Church Council members who volunteered to serve on a team focused on this “staffing for outreach.” The people on the team included Ron Kirby, Nelson Byman, Gregg Workman, Ken Baker, Debbie Fathauer, and Ross Shelton. Over a series of meetings, they reflected on research on best practices for staffing for churches, navigating church size transitions, feedback given by church members over the years and in the vision feedback sessions leading to the development of “Vision 2026,” etc. Out of this season, it was discerned that the “staffing for outreach” should begin with staffing for outreach AND retirees. It is believed this combination is the next best step for our staff and specifically for “staffing for outreach.” It was also discerned that we wanted to wait until we completed year-end 2024 and got into 2025 before any additional discussion would take place about this position.

During the spring of 2025, most of Pastor Ross’ leadership energy went to focusing on helping our school navigate the transitions associated with the cancer diagnosis and passing of our school administrator, Nancy Jahns; helping with some strategy and decision items within the school; and working through the process that led us to the calling of Jana Woods as the new school administrator. Over the past months, Pastor Ross has also reached out to a number of pastors of healthy, growing churches and asked them questions about staffing for new positions. That is, while the process was delayed longer than originally planned in “Vision 2026,” this gave us time to further reflect. Out of this time of reflection, the Church Council, in their regular meeting on June 22nd, spent a substantial amount of time discussing and discerning the consideration about whether God might be calling our current youth pastor, Chad Marrs, into this new role. Out of this time, we were unanimous in agreement that we believe God is calling Pastor Chad into this role! We believe his gifts, passions, background, training, experience, and already existing connections with our mission partners makes him the best fit for this new role. In preparation for this time of transition, here are some answers to questions you may have:

ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS YOU MAY HAVE

What will be the areas of focus in this new role?

- The outreach section of the responsibilities will include the following: (1) function as the point person for local, national, international ministry and mission partnerships; (2) oversee and assist with our ministries specifically focused on serving our community; (3) organize service opportunities for the church body as a whole and for different segments of the church; (4) plan and/or help plan our different local, national, and international mission trips; (5) oversee the “First Impressions Ministry” on Sunday mornings; (6) provide evangelism and mission training; (7) keep current with research and trends on evangelism, missions, and church growth/health; (8) develop strategies to connect our church with our community; and (9) preach/teach.

- The retiree ministry section of the responsibilities will include the following: (1) Work closely with the pastor who oversees adult small groups to see how he can help our Sunday School leaders and classes with different ministry needs and opportunities; (2) organize and lead ongoing fellowship opportunities for retirees (e.g. lunches, day trips, etc.); (3) work closely with other pastors and others involved in serving in providing pastoral care to our retirees, which includes, but is not limited to, visiting church members in the hospital and visiting “home-bound” members; and (4) provide special times of Bible study and/or singing uniquely designed for retirees

When will Pastor Chad start in this new role? Pastor Chad will begin when we call a new youth pastor. That is, he will continue serving in his role as youth pastor until we call a new youth pastor.

Where will Pastor Chad office? He will no longer office in the HUB (Youth Building) but instead will office in the church office.

What is the process for calling a new a youth pastor? Pastor Ross will select a team and solicit feedback from the church. Pastor Ross and this team will recommend a candidate to the Church Council for approval. As a reminder, in our new, current governance, with the exception of the Lead Pastor, other pastoral positions are approved by the Church Council (i.e. the Lead Pastor is the only one who is hired/called and fired, if needed, by congregational vote).

How will this impact our budget? As Pastor Ross reached out to pastors of healthy, growing churches, one of the concepts that these churches often use is funding the position for a time before it is absorbed into the general budget. In our recent business meeting on June 29th, the church approved setting aside 80% of the 2024 surplus to provide initial funding for the compensation package for this new position (20% of the surplus was a double tithe to the Missions Designated Fund). This funding will help provide some time for our budget this year and next year to “catch up.” At the heart of this, of course, is the belief that we are trusting the Lord for His financial provision. Therefore, we thank you for your continued support of the General Budget, which will be the long-term place where this position is funded. Thank you!

Do you think this will lead to greater growth? We humbly recognize that we cannot make growth happen; God brings growth (1 Corinthians 3:5-7). We do believe this is part of a cultivation process of being a healthier church and creating space for growth as God provides.

What are the future staffing plans? Once again, while not presuming but praying for growth, we do have tentative staff plans if certain levels of growth happen.

Did you look at other candidates? We discussed during this process about whether or not to open this to other candidates. Also, when we created this position, we did not create it for a specific person; it is a reflection of the vision and needs of our church. This being said, as we prepared to move forward, we believe that Pastor Chad has the gifts, passions, and qualifications for this new position. He has also been a part of our church for 13 years, knows our people, and has deep connections with our mission partners (and our mission partners have a deep connection with him). Since we believe God was calling him to this role, we did not feel the need to reach out to other potential candidates.

How will Pastor Chad work with Pastor Troy? Pastor Troy oversees small groups (Sunday School, home groups, Bible studies during the week) and pastoral care, so Pastor Troy and Pastor Chad will serve closely together in relation to our retirees.

Tell us more about Chad: Chad was raised in Houston and Hempstead. He is a graduate of Hempstead High School and Leavell College of New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. Chad has been married to his wife, Bobbye, for 28 years, and they have four children, a future son-in-law, and one granddaughter. Before coming to serve at our church in 2012, Pastor Chad served on the staffs of Springhill Baptist Church; First Baptist Church, Marshall; Waller Baptist Church; First Baptist Church, Gilmer; First Baptist Church, Albuquerque, NM; and First Baptist Church of West Albuquerque, NM.

A SPECIAL WORD FROM PASTOR ROSS

I am excited to be in a new season of re-visioning and implementing in the life of our church. I am also excited about Pastor Chad being in this new role. I have served closely with Pastor Chad throughout my almost 12 years as the Lead Pastor. I know Pastor Chad’s heart for evangelism and missions, his strengths and weaknesses, and his love for the people of our church. I believe that this transition will be an exciting next step for our church and for Pastor Chad. As we move forward, I’d like to ask you to do two things:

- Pray: Pray for the spiritual health of our church. Pray that God would work in and through us to see people come to faith in Christ Jesus. Pray for the church’s spiritual protection against our enemy as we step out in faith.

- Financially Support the Budget: As many of you know, I refer to our budget as the ministry engine of our church, which is fueled by the faithful, generous financial gifts of people in our church. Thank you for your financial support of Brenham’s First Baptist Church!

I hope you’re ready to move forward. I am! Let’s look to God and see what He might do!”
