We are in the middle to have fun and adventurous denim moment by now. why tailored denim?

Here is a fact; denim never goes out of fashion. From street wear to red carpet event, work apparel to runway, Marilyn Monroe to Alexa Chung. Nowadays, denim is not just for jeans. Some designers and brands have made shirts, jackets, dress, cape, skirt, bags and jumpsuit as well. Many choices and desirable! A week ago, Alexa Chung released her first foray in fashion design for AG Jeans. At the launch of her collaboration with AG, she wore denim baby doll dress, as one of her many designs. She looks stunning and cleverly completed her simple day dress look with black, heeled ankle boots. Making it look easy and comfortable to wear. The 21-piece collection includes a dark wash dress, a denim mini skirt, cropped flares, and an undying love for the playful nineties of her childhood. In a recent interview with Vogue, theBrit-born model turn designer said she borrowed a lot of the actual denim from men’s jeans. She wanted to look at how men wear denim and try and replicate that fabric wear in the women’s collection. Alexa Chung is just one among many designer and brands who works on denim currently. Couple of times ago, Tom Ford also shocked audience when he took his bow at his spring 2015 show by wearing blue jeans and a denim shirt to match. He wore denim on denim to address the fashion crowd, breaking his routine uniform white shirt, dark tie, gold collar pin and black single-breasted suit, and black cap toed shoes. Surprisingly, one of the trends that happen in spring 2015 is tailored denim. Most of the designers offers their ideas about denim, such as Valentino with red carpet lace inset gown, Moschino with their Barbie girl sequined skinnies, ‘70s chic Gucci, denim on denim Fendi, a festival ready boho top and skirt Stella McCartney, embellished jacket denim Jean Paul Gaultier, a romantic top and ball gown skirt Veronique Branquiho and a shearling trimme nipped waist jacket Burberry Prorsum.

On the record, as quote from BBC, the word denim itself comes from ‘de Nimes’, French town where the fabric was said to be first made but American jeans were made with US denim. Jean is said to reference sailors from Genoa, Italia, who wore indigo-dyed clothes. Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis patented their riveted design on 20 May 1873, said to be birth of jeans. Talk about denim style icons, we cannot miss the famous Marilyn Monroe who wore boyfriend style of jeans and denim combo in her hits movie The Misfits. Then James Dean in Rebel Without a Cause and Marlon Brando in the Wild One who make a pair of jeans become the uniform of teenager and a symbol of rebellious. After all that attentions, some models appear in iconic advertisements, such as Kate Moss for the Calvin Klein in the 90s and Claudia Schiffer for Guess. Madonna wore patched jeans for her American Pie video and Britney Spears all of sudden took denim to red carpet music awards. Yes, Katy Perry did the same too. Denim exists perhaps since 18th century; get appreciation for its durability rather than potential appeal at that time. From work-gear to street style denim passed the innovative treatments. And new cuts made possible for denim to walk in Fashion Week runways since 70s. It’s increasing interest and all throughout 80s into acid wash, stone wash, ripped, and cuffed. Among many reasons, we all know that everyone is looking for versatility and comfort clothes. Not to mention, we want to make a statement look as well. And fortunately, many designers and brands worked on denim pieces with polished, yet modern patterns and details. Besides, denim can be wearing all the time and to every occasion. It is allowing us to dress up or down, effortlessly transitioning in between the laid-back and also look super sexy. Today, denim is ready to take another revolutionary step towards fashion. It changes beyond imagination, looking

– 9 –

polished modern and sophisticated. It has bold patterns, elaborate embroideries, intricate embellishments, richer palette of colours and fine tailoring. For example like Barbara Bui, Holly Fulton and Versace collection. Denim interpretations are not only in the bold patterns and intricate embellishments, but also fine tailoring with the new denim silhouettes. Transforming into a more refined vision, like loose fit jeans, top crop, sleek jumpsuits, or exquisite of outerwear and flowing skirts. We could find it on collections of Rebecca Taylor, Max Mara and Ermanno Scervino. On the top of it, the biggest metamorphosis of denim is when it becomes into a thing of luxury with heavily embellished denim pieces like gold chains, layers of lace, printed alligator or phyton skins, metal studs and jet beading. For example, like the collections of Balmain, Louis Vuitton and Roberto Cavalli. have style with denim Imagine denim as a statement of luxury, you better keeping the rest of the outfit clean and minimal. Combine with a simple, neutral top short or long sleeved into a pair embellished jeans. A cool denim jacket? Enhancing it with a white button-down and a pair of loose tailored pants. Metallic accent or delicate stud? Keep it clean. Keep the silhouette sleek and sophisticated. Sometimes make denim an evening choice, a denim crop top to go with satin pants or having an elegant pencil skirt with a printed silk shirt. Still have no ideas? Take a look of some denim collections by some famous brands like Louis Vuitton, Saint Laurent, or Michael Kors. Designer Frida Giannini showed a pair of the cropped wide-leg jeans for Gucci. It is so much fun, isn’t it? And what about Stella McCartney, Kenzo and Chloe skirt with much longer, silhouettes and floor-sweeper style? In her book “IT”, Alexa Chung gave advice about what makes three don’t for denim. No awkward camel toes, hoes in the bum and unflattering back pocket. Ready? It’s time to play your denim style.*

hege wollan

Whats your fashion mantra? Before every job (or actually every morning), I give thanks to the universe for everything. It really helps to make my day. Out of all of the photos the photographers took of you, which is your favorite and why? My favorite so far must be an editorial for “Ziggy” that Ivanho Harlim took of me in Singapore. I didn’t wear any makeup, which made the whole concept raw. He was really able to capture “me”.

BY fauve

Today we introduce you Hege. This Indonesian mixed has a passion for fashion and travel. Hege’s passion led her to travel all around Asia. Now with a strong new look, Hege is ready to walk the world and it will be game on. How did you become a model, and what was your first break? I went to a local agency and applied myself. My aunt was the one who saw the “potential” in me, and I thought: “Why not try?”. My first big break was when I opened the Biyan show in Jakarta Fashion Week 2011.

What advice do you have for other aspiring models? Stay humble, be nice to everyone you meet, and find inspiration in everything you do and experience. Who are some of your favorite fashion photographers? I love Bruce Weber. What does fashion mean to you? For me, real fashion is art. I love art, and I love being part of creating something beautiful, so my job really means a lot to me. I am thankful for being able to do what I love, and at the same time live from it. How has modeling changed other aspects of your life? I’ve learned a lot from modeling. I know being more patient is important, with both people and in general; hard work always pays off;

How do you keep fit, what is your training routine and menu? I try to work out as often as possible between jobs. I love yoga, as well as running. I try to vary my activities, by trying new stuff like TRX, muay thai etc. I eat quite healthy in general, and have no strict diet.

What inspires you in life as a person? I try to find inspiration in everything I see and do. From every person I meet, to every road I walk. I think inspiration is everywhere, and if we really open our eyes, inspiration finds us just at the right time.

How do you define your style and what is your favorite store to shop? My style is quite simple and classic I would say, loving black, navy and pastel colors. What are your main interests and hobbies? I love diving, travelling, painting and reading. I used to dance, so I always try to make time for that as well to let out my energy. What is the one fashion item that you cant live without? I don’t really have a particular item that I can’t live without, but I love hats. And jeans. What is your favorite place to stay? I always go back and forth between Jakarta and Norway, since both of them is considered home for me. Between those two, I really can’t decide which I love more.

Whats the dream project you fantasize to do? Right now, I really want to participate in making fashion videos. I haven’t done a lot of those, and trying something new is always something I strive for. Through out your modeling career so far, what is the best memory you have? I love travelling and working at the same time, so every job I’ve ever done while out of town has been good memories for me. In a more specific point of view, my best memory must’ve been when I opened the Biyan show in 2014 for his 30 years anniversary. My heart was pounding before I walked out, and so much anticipation and adrenaline was running through my body. It really was a good experience. Where do you see yourself in 10 years? Happy, proud and…just happy.

Who are some of your favorite models and designers, and why? I love Marine Deleeuw and Maria Carla Boscono. As in brands, my favorites are Chloe and The Row.

5 words that describe yourself. Adventurous, balanced, passionate, curious, vivacious.

Which fashion magazines do you like to read? I love “raw” magazines like RUSSH.

haze & glory

„We love and need the direct contact to our customers, we can communicate via social media, email and events. It’s the best thing to get direct feedback from customers that help us shape the brand. Not selling wholesale through stores allows us to react very quickly and try out certain styles. The supply chain is cut to a minimum, from us to you. If we feel like the girls in our community might dig lasercut leather hotpants, they will be online and ready to sell within a few weeks. That’s the beauty of selling only through one channel, our website. And it keeps room for customization, limited editions and helps us to evolve and experiment.“

BY fauve

Haze & Glory took it’s first breath in summer 2014 and was created by 3 buddies from Germany: international fashion model Andre Hamann and designer couple Rik and Kim. The brand’s mission is simple: Haze & Glory wants to deliver high end vintage inspired deconstructed premium garments at an affordable price without exploiting people. The trio wants to re-vive time consuming handmade artisanal techniques. „The three of us met in Cape Town / South Africa. It was the time when tshirts had to have at least 2 neon colours and some design printed over at least half the front tshirt. We had a few drinks and moaned about not being able to find good vintage looking tshirts and tops in faded natural colours, anti fit, over-sized, soft perfect handfeel...so why not set out to create exactly that? We got heavily inspired and spend the following months brainstorming, writing business plans and designing.“ Today Haze & Glory Garments are made from high quality fabrics that are then hand distressed, washed, sanded, beaten down, ripped...everything to create a beautiful edgy vintage effect of an old worn favourite piece. The label uses a solely vertical business model and is only available exclusively online at www.hazeandglory. com, cutting out all middle men such as agents, distributors, tradeshows and retail stores, Haze & Glory can remove unneccessary mark-ups, pay higher wages and afford higher production costs and still sell luxuries rugged fashion items at a normal price.

Within its first 6 months in business the label sold to customers in 16 countries, build a strong loyal following through social media and the clothing could be seen on top models such as John Kortajarena, Danielle Knudson, Nadine Leopold or Jena Goldsack. Asked about the person they design for the makers reply: “When we design we imagine the love child of Johhny Depp and Russel Brand driving a custom motorbike listening to the Smashing Pumpkins. But we quickly found out that our customer group is much broader and wider and less cliche. We are 90s kids and that’s what’s coming through in our clothing and style – grundgy and a love for all rugged.“ So what does the future have in store for Haze & Glory? “We want to grow our online business, this will be the core of the label. South East Asia, Australia, Germany, UK and the US are our core markets right now. Furtheron we want to extend the shopping experience from solely online to the first HG flagship store where customers can touch and feel the products and get even closer to the brand and us. Berlin or Hamburg in Germany are the first cities on the map, hopefully with more to come in the following years. It really depends on what people and potential partners cross our ways. But one thing is for sure, we don’t want to follow any given trend, we rather want to continue getting better at what we do, design great products for our niche and the community that we feel close to.“

Metallic silver dresses trends 2015

Diane Kruger has a perfect silvery gown of Emilia Wickstead. Not to mention the uprising star of Fifty Shades of Grey, Dakota Johnson who looked aw-mazing in her shimmering sequin Chanel Haute Couture and Best Actress in a Drama winner Julianne Moore in her feathered and sequins glam Givenchy Haute Couture. Shimmering. Sparkling. Metallic silver dress. Yes, we talk about the best dressed at the Golden Globes Awards 2015 red carpet. Metallic is one easiest way to look shine, glamour and sparkling on the red carpet. While, silver is the most popular and play it safe colour this day. Jennifer Lopez stands out wore dazzled sequin with cape dress by Zuhair Murad. Emma Stone looks stunning in a glittering strapless bustier and trousers from Lanvin.

Did I mention Kate Beckinsale is one among the best-dressed stars that attend the award nights as well? She wore couture gown by Lebanese designer Elie Saab featured a dusky grey skirt with concealed side-split and a sequined top with plunging neckline. Other notable white and metallic gowns include Reese Witherspoon in Calvin Klein. Let’s take a look more details. Zuhair Murad Sexy, bold, sparkling and steal the spotlight. That is happening when Jennifer Lopez wore Zuhair Murad Fall 2014 Couture silver art deco on the Globes red carpet. We can’t deny, all eyes on her. That neck,

– 22 –

that cleavage, and those legs? J.Lo knows best about making statement on the red carpet, right? And Murad’s gown is the best choice. She can show off her toned legs with exxagerated slit, and look elegance with its long train cape. The dress also has feminine structure around the hips. With that eye-popping dres, even Jeremy Renner could not help but notice. “You have the globes, too”. Lanvin Look chic in a strapless jumpsuit at the red carpet, why not? Emma Stone, who is nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Birdman, is making heads turn on the red carpet with Lanvin embellished jumpsuit. Its sparkling silver, embellished bodice, and mannish trouser the perfect combination between feminine and masculine styling. We could say Emma Stone is the coolest at the Globes night (imagine how she stands out among long gowns). It’s risky for the red carpet, but Emma acts like veteran.

uzo

Emilia Wickstead It’s softly shimmering gown from Emilia Wickstead Spring 2015 collection and Diane Kruger looks beautiful with flowing silhouette of the design. Its slim-line bodice and fuller skirt of the dress is eyecatching. It has the liquid silver effect as well. It’s glamorous. Emilia Wickstead is 30 years old New Zealand-born, London-based designer. Among her fans is the Duchess of Cambridge. Allison Williams wore her collections to the Oscars, and Poppy Delevingne wore a design from the spring/summer 2014 at the British Fashion Awards. Her spring 2015 collection is known as glitzy Eighties nocturne and one of her best designs. Chanel Dakota Johnson, a breakout star in Fifty Shades of Grey, is wearing a shimmering silver and grey gown at the Globes 2015. Fierce and glamorous. Plus, the gown is featured a thigh-high split to show her beautiful legs. This dress is one of Chanel Fall 2014 Couture collections. At the end, we could say, the gown was the perfect choice for her to shine and win the red carpet best-dressed. Givenchy The metallic disco dress is just made for Julianne Moore. And the best actress nominee for her role in Still Alice, stuns in that custom Givenchy Couture gown, custom designed by Ricardo Tisci (who also designed Kim Kardashian’s wedding dress).

moore

reese

Its sequins and feather detail make Moore look more elegant and wellplayed. Wearing a custom-made gown on the red carpet is a trend by now. Julianne Moore said to nytimes, that she ever mailed Tom Ford and asked him to make her a dress last year. It’s not the first time actress wear custom-made dress. Besides Moore, Gwyneth Platrow wore a custom Tom Ford dress at the 2012 Oscars. Amy Adams appeared at the Globes in a made-to-order Marchesa gown. Elie Saab Elie Saab is a fashion talent and her collections always steal the scenes at the red carpet. And the flowing dress with silver sequin ensemble is the perfect fit for Kate Beckinsale. That neutral gray dress from Elie Saab Couture had a vibe and plunging neckline detail embracing her feminine style. A glittery gown. Well-done, Kate! Calvin Klein Reese Witherspoon seems does not want to take any risk for the red carpet, especially at Golden Globes. She is best actress nominee for her role in Wild and a glittery strapless gown by Calvin Klein is not a bad choice, at least, she saves the red carpet look. One of her best style so far. Last year, Naomi Watts also sparkled in the sequined Calvin Klein number on the Oscars. And she is one among the top ten best dressed ladies of the night too.

– 23 –

Randi Rahm A gunmetal gown with the ruby detailing and crystal neckline make Uzo Aduba, actress in Orange is the New Black look sexy and beautiful. The sparkler was a blaze beauty. Randi Rahm has built awareness of her name by dressing some celebrities for red carpet events, like Beyonce, Jennifer Lopez, Halle Berry, Jennifer Hudson and so on. Seeing Aduba with this glittering and gorgeous one, no wonder. This year silver dress trend reminds me about the dress that Naomi Watts and Mila Kunis wore at the Golden Globes last year. Watts stands out as one of the best wore silver Tom Ford dress with a gold necklace. She looked stunning and gorgeous. While Mila Kunis with metallic silver Gucci Premiere gown, she showed off the dress’ embellished neckline. Perfect fit! Among a few major colours on the red carpet of Golden Globes 2015 like red, yellow and purple, metallic silver is one sparkling shimmering that really steal the spotlight. And silver statement dress, however is hard not to notice. The sparkly trend now found favour with the stars. * photos: style/gettyimages

n3 by chloe machin Shortly after I moved to Bali with a 6 months contract in Event Management.. and the old Bali story goes, those 6 months turned into 7 years! While I have always been drawn to the sunshine and swaying palm trees, but in terms of personal style I am defiantly more of a city chick and would rather stick my feet in a pair of heels than Havaianna’s. I found the transition from European city life to sandy beaches a little tricky and longed to buy clothes in shops rather than having to haggle for prices - so I started having my own made. Oddly I focused on leather pieces, which, lets be honest doesn’t really make sense, rather than textiles during, but overseas trip to Melbourne I was stopped by an agent on Chapel Street and asked where I had bought the leather Jacket I was wearing. I told her it was a sample and so she quickly dragged me into the closets shop and asked for my details right and told me I would be crazy not to focus all of my attention on design development in leather especially. She called me continuously for 6 months after I returned to Bali, each time with the same two questions “so have you quit your job?” and “When are you sending me some more samples?” I did eventually end up quitting my job, which was in fact totally crazy, but I thought it would be worth a shot and the encouragement and support I received from friends and family gave me the courage to give it a go.

Chloe Machin, Company Director of N3 Bali runs Bali’s only online concept store propagating and collaborating with only Indonesian owned and designed boutique labels and talent. She talks to us about what inspired her to showcase the local talent and craftsmanship of fashion, lifestyle and entertainment entrepreneurs found across Indonesia; The small, the creative, the undiscovered and the unique labels that she thinks we need to see. Welcome to www.numberthreebali.com FM: How did you first become involved in Fashion CM: I graduated in 2007 with an International Business Degree, specializing in Events and hospitality from a Swiss Hospitality University.

I ended up with a retail shop and producing for a few select European clients within 2 years before welcoming my little boy, Ashton to this sunny little island. FM: Describe your typical day CM: There is no typical day really, except from the fact that mornings tend to be rather hectic in my house…well I guess I’ll be honest and say that my days are rather hectic in general. I don’t wish for more hours in the day, because I would just try to cramp more stuff into those extra hours, but a pair of extra hands would be handy! Ash wakes me up early. We have breakfast in bed while Ash watches cartoons and I check my emails and social media accounts. Then I’ll all of a sudden realize that we need to be in the car in 5 minutes. That’s generally when it starts getting hectic. I am a tea in the morning kind of chick, but once it get’s hectic, I need caffeine which means that Revolver Coffee House is always the first stop after Ash is dropped at pre-school.

– 26 –

I meet my team, made up by 6 amazing chicks, at offices and we get straight into it. Monday’s always start off with our most detailed briefing of the week. We discuss the upcoming content schedule for the week, plan our social media schedule…all routine things that help us plan and manage the content and visuals of the site. I generally try to leave the office around 3.30pm most afternoon’s so I can cook and hang with the little man at home before bedtime and then it’s either back to work from the home office or out for dinner. FM:What motivated the launch of N3 CM: By nature I am a bit of a curious soul and love sourcing, which is probably why I initially wished for a career in Event’s Management.. I am also a bit of a night owl which means that many hours are spent are online. I started coming across a bunch of small unique Indonesian labels. I was instantly drawn to the idea of collaborating with these brands that often seem to have not only amazing products and visually the brands represented a more artistic and less commercial vision.. One that I was very keen to pursue and which is much more me.

your way. I also believe that if I install this approach in my team that they will become confident in bringing new ideas to the table and if they are confident, then our company can grow rapidly with love and we can laugh at the attempts that were less excellent…so I guess if you want to follow in my footsteps, come and join us at N3….as we are indeed growing rapidly! FM: Any guilty pleasures of a fashion girl you care to share CM: This question totally begs for a “more issues than Vogue” kind of reply! www.numberthreebali.com

So, the online night hours were replaced by night hours writing out the business plan and getting my team together. The N3 girls are all very passionate and love fashion, so as a team the sourcing and scouting for new labels has become a natural extension to their roles..in fact the whole team has grown so organically and we are very much a small family of creatives who are passionate about creating opportunities the Indonesian talent and designers whom have not been had the opportunities to tap into an International market. We believe that everyone has the chance and right to be successful through personal expression, art and vision and N3 has been created as a platform to allow for those musings to be brought to an International market by creating conceptualized fashion editorials, written content and creative collaborations with photographers such as Angga Pratama who shot our latest fashion editorial. FM: Any advice for those wanting to follow in the same foot steps CM: Don’t do it!! No I am obviously joking.. I believe that opportunities arise to be taken and that excellence cultivates confidence. My definition of excellence is probably a little backwards to most, in the sense that I see what others may perceive as “failure” as a form of excellence, as it allows for other opportunities to come

BALI’S FIGHT CLUB Muay Thai is fast growing in popularity in Bali: no, not exotic those Mai Tai cocktails but in fact Thai ancient martial arts ….just the job to combat seasonal (or er, lifetime) overindulgences.

BY katie truman

In the depths of rural Kerobokan, semi-open and simplistically tropical, gym facility Dee Muay Thai looks like it could have been lifted straight out of the side-streets of Bangkok City. Perhaps in spirit, it has: Muay Thai translates as Thai boxing (the dee part meaning ‘good’ in Thai language). But far from a mere sport or new fad exercise, this is a self-defense combat sport and Thai martial arts, an ancient part of Siamese culture, sort of Thailand’s equivalent to China’s Kung Fu. Boxing uses fists and kick boxing, fists and kicks, but Muay Thai uses a stand-up strike of punches, kicks, elbows and knee strikes – eight “points of contact” and why it’s often referred to as the “Art of Eight Limbs.” Obviously, mentally and physically disciplined and of high in-

tensity exercise and training, Muay Thai is a cool way to lose weight, (burning around 1200 calories off per session), tone-up and be armed in self-defense, but also discipline and focus the mind. But how did Bali’s first dedicated Muay Thai Boxing Gym come about (a facility more familiar to the big city, not amongst rice fields on Jalan Kerobokan)? Dee Muay Thai CEOFounder, Jakarta native Marcos Manurung used to get his kicks (literally) from kick boxing, until he succumbed to the discipline of Thai boxing. He trained in Jakarta under Thai boxing Pro, Dodi Karya, for a couple of years until he was trained and primed ready as a Thai boxer himself. Off he went to Thailand in 2006 to professionally fight in the ring, but Bangkok, proved too hard-core, (what with those accomplished native-born fighters), a reason Marcos ended up instead flying-in from Jakarta for boxing fights on Thailand’s tourist island Phuket. Eventually Marcos opened his own dedicated Thai Boxing gym, M-Muay Thai in Jakarta, at that time – 2008 – there were hardly any such facilities (with the burgeoning quest

– 38 –

for new lifestyle fitness regimes, today there are near-on forty). As a personal trainer in martial arts, Muay Thai instructor and now retired fighter, (interesting to note, he appears lean, yes, but anything but a mean fighting machine, rather, quite gentle in nature), Marcos was ready to introduce this little-known discipline to Bali, as well as teaching willing disciples how to maintain a healthier and happier lifestyle through vigorous physical training and proper nutrition. Arguably one of the island’s Muay Thai pioneers, Marcos was previously a Thai Boxing consultant at Petitenget’s Daily Spa before opening his own dedicated Thai Boxing Gym in 2012 (subsequently closing his Jakarta operations the next year). KICK START A BETTER LIFE Dee Muay Thai offers fitness and fight training programmes, with classes ranging from complete novices to professional athletes, overseen by Marcos and his team of trainers. Apart from Sundays, daily group training sessions (around Rp. 70,000) run mornings 8am to 10am,

and evenings, 6pm to 8pm. Onehour VIP Training Private Lessons (Rp. 200,000) are available 10am to 6pm Monday to Friday and 11am to 3pm, Saturdays, for one-on-one or couples greater individual attention and speedier learning. Those in for the long-haul, and most students are pretty dedicated, weekly and monthly rates are also available. Akin to most competitive contact fighting sports, Muay Thai focuses on body and combat sport conditioning; thus classes are specifically designed to promote the level of fitness and toughness required for what could be essentially boxing ring competition. In three dedicated fitness zones, including a classic Thai boxing ring, training regimens and sessions integrate and rotate warmups, skipping, shadow boxing, Thai “Pad” work with trainer and heavy bag work – both conditioning training specific to a Thai fighter – and sparring techniques (which covers sparring with yourself, apparently your greatest enemy, in front of walllength mirrors). As further inspiration, bare walls are lined with posters displaying Thai

boxing graduates and fight gigs (you can almost hear the ding-ding of the bell).

boxing fixtures (for all this, keep updated on Facebook: Dee Muay Thai-Bali).

With regular training, students can most likely acquire basic Muay Thai techniques in around three months. Around 60 per cent of attendees are foreign (not surprising, with Kerobokan, an expat epicentre), and interestingly, 40 per cent are female; this percentage rising in part due to a self-empowering, combative answer to rising street crime and let’s face it, one hell of a way to keep toned and fit.

Marcos may have hung-up his sacred mongkol (traditional Muay Thai fighters headgear) now proudly displayed above the training mirrors, but still continues to keep alive this ancient Thai discipline, training and honing the next round of professional fighters, trainers, martial arts devotees or the fighting fit model!.

Muay Thai is really starting to takeoff in Bali and even the island’s top governmental officials are behind the martial arts and lending their support. With that in mind, later this year Marcos will be relocating Dee Muay Thai to bigger premises in Kerobokan, with a compound incorporating a 600-square metre gym facility, low-key condotel-style bungalows, swimming pool and restaurant. Additionally, a public sports stadium planned to open 2016 in the Bewara Beach area, is where Marcos, in his other role as event’s organizer, plans to host regular Thai

nikki for flook the label

help me make my designs in to a reality.... thats far more rewarding for me than copying a look on a catwalk.

BY fauve

How did you come to designing your own label? The brand flook came about very organically. I had worked in London for 7 years for various high street brands but had always felt something was missing. I decided to go travelling and along the way i got to meet some very talented artisans and skilled hand craft workers so it seemed like the most natural progression for me. When did you decide that you wanted to be a designer? I think I had always known from a young age... i was always very interested in art, design and the silhouette of the body. What are essential skills for being successful at your job? Perseverance, Patience and being highly Pro-active! I didnt get where I am now by just sitting back and just letting things happen. I believe we make our own destiny... fate is there to just give us a little guidance ;) Where do you get your inspiration from? When i worked in London we were constantly looking for the newest trend on the catwalks... since travelling iv hardly even looked at the catwalks! im really enjoying taking inspiration from other sources now and it not being so fashion follower! Elysian - what is the inspiration behind the new collection? A main part of my collection has been incorporating hand macrame techniques so from this I have developed a range of swim/ lingerie and beachwear that takes inspiration from the desert.... the arid sand dunes... sand blasted and sun bleached colourways... a desert wanderer. I had seen Zahara, the model i used for my new collection, a while ago in an editorial and just knew instantly I wanted to work with her. she suits my brand aesthetic and the whole collection beautifully. How would you describe your brand? Ever Evolving - i get inspired daily and i love soooo many things so im hoping the brand just keeps growing and growing as i learn new skills and get inspired by places i travel to and the people i meet. What do you find are the most enjoyable and most challenging aspects of designing FLOOK? The most enjoyable part for me is seeing the whole collection come together on the day of the shoot.... and see my vision transpire. It was such a perfect team and it just worked. The challenge was the whole run up to the shoot day and getting everything just right... last minute technical faults could have been a nightmare but having faith in the process helped things come together amazingly! these things just happen and its all a learning curve. What are you most passionate about? Alongside running my brand i also want to take the experience

iv gained the last few years and use that to help the Stella’s Child Orphanage Charity. The charity was set up to help give the teenagers from the Widhya Asih 1 orphanage the foundational skills for starting and managing their own business. Collaborations in the future? I worked closely with Michelle Van Djik on the new Elysian collection... shes a talented photographer with excellent art direction... she helped bring my vision to life so id love to work with her again on some more amazing projects. What does the future hold for FLOOK? I have just spent some time at home in London and thats a market im yet to sell my range to but one I’m definitely hoping to push for in 2015 ....as its in my roots!.... then the US..... who knows!?? Taking FLOOK internationally would be my dream! ;) web: www.flookthelabel.com insta: instagram.com/flookthelabel facebook: www.facebook.com/ NikkiFlookTheLabel

So far jalan Mertanadi has been known only for some furniture shops, awesome pole dance studio, occasional epic traffic and, well, the prison. But it could never boast any decent eatery, the kind you want to come for breakfast and stay all the way to lunch and afternoon coffee just hanging out or working. Those times are gone. The everproductive TIALS duo has brought to beforeboring Mertanadi not only parties and creative nail service, but some really simple, fresh, good and hearty food with their new café Food Folk. When entering the café, it immediately has a cozy effect on you the- design is clean and minimalistic, with a cactuse here and there, to represent the owner’s love for the Californian desert. The menu is kept as simple as possible, which allows the ingredients to stay at its most fresh. Nina and her sister created the menu. Nina

Hadinata has a passion for cooking, so every single sandwich or bagel here tastes absolutely delicious. The all day menu has about twenty choices of regular breakfast dishes and salads. The Big Breakfast has been the most popular option so far and it totally lives up to its name - choice of eggs, baked beans, mushrooms, hash brown, bacon, grilled tomato and spinach with sourdough – something to kickstart your day and make you want to skip lunch. If you are not much of a morning glutton, there are healthier and lighter options, like Joan’s omelette, where it is up to you what goes inside it. Lunch menu section is based around Gourmet Bagles and Sandwiches, each coming with complimentary salad or fries. The bagels have even more variety of choice; you can pick a plain or garlic bagel, a whole one or just a half. And again, I cannot skip mentioning the TIALS art of naming their creations – its always fun and spot on. The apple Of My Eye is a Cajun chicken, apple, cheddar and rocket bagel. Or perhaps The Dream Sandwich, it is really quite a ‘dream ‘of a sadnwich indeed – chicken mayo, sundried tomatoes, avocado, bacon, cheddar, caramelized onion and tobasco. This one is a definite must try, along with “Steak Me’, that no meat connoisseur should ever miss.

To quench your thirst there is a wide range of smoothies (Mixed Berry Smoothie is a must try), fresh juices and – attention - detox waters! These are really good to cure your hangover after a wild night at Warehouse82. Think water infused with all sorts of fruits, mint or cucumber. Though coffee is not really a Food Folk speciality, it is exceptionally good here. The particular coffee is the café’s very own blend, which is made in conjuction with Morph Coffee in Jakarta; they like to call it “Coffee Folk”. By the way here is a little tip, through the months of Jan & Feb, you can get a free coffee with any Sandwich you purchase. Yet another valid reason added to the collection of ones mentioned above, come and experience this cute and unpretentios cafe. Kerobokan has now officially opened a proper place for hungry foodies out there. Well done, Food Folk! instagram @f_o_o_d_f_o_l_k

karma KONVERSATIONS The Karmic Implications of Russell’s Revolution

fully care-filled, bangled, baubled and tattooed Brit does. And, many of us love him for it.

by SWATHIMAA

Has anyone else read the mighty Mr. Brand’s relatively recent, intriguing, intoxicating, intuitive and counterConsumanist bookitty-wookitty, entitled thus (though the “e” is somehow mystically reversed)? First off, I know as well as you do that the last three words of the sentence above aren’t real words. They’re play-ons, “Not to be confused with strap-ons, which are clearly much more practical!” as the linguistically bonhommistic author might slap-dashedly exclaim (in Chapter 3, I think), just to get a rise out of his by then thoroughly bewildered but still wide-eyed, inquisitive readers. The point being, he’s quite fond of using wry, witty, and pointedly brilliant word play. In fact, “play” is an essential ingredient in everything that darn funny, yarn thin, great-looking, mentally-askew, heart-

In this thoughtfully marvelous tome, he points all of his brilliant haha junk at a seriously hopeful turn of events: the inevitable onslaught of humanity for humanity. Plus, he throws in the salvation of the planet to boot. The point summarily being… for generations, we’ve all been scrounging for the almighty coin in such a way, it turns out, that virtually all of our efforts benefit (primarily) the richest niche among us (who don’t scrounge at all), which has only led us to a precipice, much like the one lemmings seem so fond of. Instead of having the strength to raise ourselves up by our strapping bank accounts, we’ve only spread ourselves more and more economically thin (anorexic, really), while fattening the riche-niche’s elitistly bulging pockets. Such thinking is worthy of Ché and Fidel, of course, only twiggly-sniggly Russ’ timing may be more fortuitous, in part, because of worldwide ease-ofaccess via the wily, gossamer bonds of the www.web.everywhere.

– 72 –

While we’re already over 300 words into this, you should know that I’m not here to hoist the tard of his argument (“tard”, by the way, is an Old English word that is appropriately used in this context. But, you’ll have to google it for yourself). After all, his argument isn’t a new one, just a much better version with a much more practical plan and more viable outcome, which will likely happen much sooner than later since, if it doesn’t, 99.999% of us are thoroughly, um, economically devalued-for-life (“screwed” in the really, really bad sense) even if, sitting here at the beach, beautifully and scantily clad as we are, with our iPads and iPhones and eBay and Tapas and drinks all within arms’ reach, it doesn’t look that way. The gist of the matter, though, is this… it’s time for all God’s children to share abundantly, compassionately and consistently, as if that’s what being an adult truly means. In other words, it’s time for the starving or spoiled Inner Child within each of us to grow up. “Commune” and “Communism” are words/concepts/ideas, which we haven’t translated well into practical realities. We’ve been functional illiterates, as far as that goes. So, I’m

not saying everyone should head for Pune, India or dream of East Berlin’s or Moscow’s bygone days. And, neither is the post-debauchery-prone Master Russell. If he had his druthers, though, he might opt for a wild summer in Spain-before-Franco, palling around with George Orwell. Likewise, beheading the Fat Cats on the bus is/was only another symptom of our communal illiteracy. Like adolescents, Inner or otherwise, we impatiently lost sight of some quintessential truths: Life is lived through relationships; and, every relationship is based on exchange. Life is lived as a shared experience. Sharing is required. The question is, then, “Is it actually true that the more you give the more you receive?” If not, we really ought to go back to the drawing board — or to our cocktails and chips, at any rate. Inserting “actually true” is a passiveaggressive way of implying that there’s recognized potential to “sharing” but experiencing the reciprocal largesse consistently and strongly enough seems unlikely; that’s probably been most everyone’s common (if not, gladly, consistent) experience. For

most people, “sharing” is a Craps Shoot. Honestly, is being “glad” that you helped someone out, enough of a result to sustain many/most/any people and inspire them to share and contribute more and more? Be honest. Most people “share” with the intention of getting something for themselves, too; that they have to wait to get what they want “in return” is incidental…as long as they get something close to, equal to or more than what they want/ expect — ahem, just like a selfish little kid. In Russell’s wonderfully coiffed little mind, our childish selfishness has been nurtured long past its short-pantsand-pigtails shelf life by playground bullies, who somehow got us to buy into the idea that our lunch money was actually theirs and that, them taking it from us was really us sharing it with them — and we ought to feel good about ourselves for that, no matter how loudly our famished little tummies grumble. Please forgive the slight rant on behalf of the Revolution (¡Vive LA!!). In spirituality, one of the most profound, evolutionary techniques is called “seva”, which means selfless service — giving without a second thought. Can you imagine the

– 73 –

implications? It takes intention and greater awareness. And, it empowers both. With a little practice, it’s how our Inner Adults will gladly and soon participate. If it’s alright with you… I’ll go first.

fashion HOROSCOPE Aries With Mars already winding down your current Mars cycle and your energy levels a lot lower, bringing a need to spend more time navel gazing and recharging your batteries, this becomes a more pleasurable experience from today. It’s Venus’ return to your sector of subconscious thinking, imagination and review today that begins the wind down of your current Venus cycle, where starting from today your heart will be taking you on a nostalgic trip down memory lane. Taurus Venus’ departure from your career sector today is one of those situations where you can take something away without feeling a loss, especially as she’s done her job of fuelling your professional desires and expectations and your professional confidence. With Mars having also been and gone but the Sun and Mercury staying behind, this is when you get to the business end of getting this new professional year off the ground. You know what you want, where your heart stands and what excites you and now it’s time to walk the talk. Gemini Venus’ return to your career sector brings you to a point where, with your professional passions, dreams and fighting spirit already engaged, you’re able to start steering things in the right direction. It’s Venus’ return to your career sector that will not only see your professional desires and expectations kick in, but the laws of attraction as well. At a point where you should know what excites you it’s now about listening to your heart, as Venus starts to attract both professional opportunities and attention your way. Cancer As she leaves your financial sector today Venus knows that her financial desires and expectations are in safe hands, which is why she also leaves you with your financial confidence boosted and with a sense of wishful thinking. Venus’ job isn’t to figure out the ‘when, where and how’ and knowing that you’ve got the Sun’s transparency and Mercury’s smart head for money she knows her expectations are in safe hands, as things move into a more strategic phase.

Leo As she leaves your relationship sector today Venus, planet of love leaves you with a better sense of what you want from your relationships and what they need from you, while the real journey continues. While it’s the professional gods that will want and need your attention today your relationships and the desires and expectations Venus leaves you with are in safe hands, especially if you take responsibility for protecting and nurturing them.

having spent the last 24 days giving your heart a voice. With your relationships under some indirect pressure this year, being forced to raise the bar as the bar is raised on your own expectations, having the communication lines open and your heart on your sleeve is essential. This comes on a day when you need to have your finger on the pulse and ear to the ground when it comes to work matters.

Virgo As she leaves your work sector today, as well as leaving you with a clear sense of where your heart stands and of what you do and don’t want on the work front, she knows that things are in safe hands and that the journey to get this new professional year off the ground is still very much a work in progress. It’s from today that Venus shifts her focus onto your relationships, where Mars is already stirring up your passions and fighting spirit.

Capricorn As she leaves your income sector Venus is not only leaving you with fuelled income desires and expectations and a sense of entitlement, but a sense of confidence across all the currencies in your life. If Venus were to only focus on the money she knows she’ll be missing the point, for you can’t ask and get what you want financially or otherwise if you don’t first believe in yourself and in what you’re worth. This is all about putting you first, as Venus turns her focus onto giving your heart a voice.

Libra LWhile Venus’ departure from a fun, playful, romantic and creatively charged part of your chart and return to your work sector does put more focus on work matters, it is by far the end of the story when it comes to a balance between work and play. If anything the scales are a little more evenly balanced, with Venus joining Mars to get work matters up to speed, while the Sun and Mercury stay on in a fun, playful, romantic and creatively charged part of your chart to ensure you don’t take this too far.

Aquarius Just few days in to your birthday month Venus leaves today, but not before giving your heart a voice and a clear sense of what you do and don’t want from the coming year. With your birthday month far from over and doors still open to a change of mind and to exploring your options, hold onto the desires and expectations Venus leaves you with. Until now it’s been more about the ‘what’, with the focus shifting from today onto walking the talk. It’s no longer about what you want and more about how you’re going to make it happen.

Scorpio With the Moon not only in your relationship sector today but on especially good terms with communication forces, this was always going to be a good day for connecting and for relationship matters, with matters of the heart also getting a real boost today. Last year Venus, planet of love didn’t return to your romantic sector until April, but it’s still January and she’s not only returning today but teaming up with Mars, who is already firing up your romantic and creative passions.

Pisces While your old solar year still has another 3 weeks to run, with Mars already in your sign and Venus returning today the desire to move on is already here. Mars has been firing up your passions and fighting spirit for the last 16 days, so by the time Venus returns to give your heart a voice you’ve already got a good sense of what excites you. Last year Mars didn’t return to your sign at all and Venus didn’t return until April, with this year giving you a chance to get a massive jump on your birthday month and new solar year before it even begins.

Sagittarius As she leaves your communication sector today Venus leaves you with the support and the resources to continue what she started,

heart kingdom Valentine’s Day Special 3 Perfect Valentine’s Day Outfits BY AstriD

So you’ve secured your Valentine’s Day plans, what comes second is, figuring out on what to wear. So whether you’re celebrating the big day with a sweet, low-key dinner at home, hitting the town with your man, or celebrating your single-dom with your girls, I’ve fixed you a few looks that will make it a night to remember (cross our hearts!). Valentine’s Day is the ultimate excuse to go out, get your hair blow-dried, treat yourself to a new lippy and dress, and to look utterly fabulous! If it’s your first night out with your crush, you want to look cute without making it obvious you spent hours getting ready. Pick something cute, easy to wear and most importantly, you have to feel comfortable in it. Let’s say, a pretty look that isn’t try-hard.

This skater dress shaped is perfect for your first date with your beau. It has neck details already so all you have to do is put on a minim accessory, like a plate necklace. I chose ankle boots, because I don’t want you to trip on the stairs by wearing 11cm tall heels on your first date ‘cause that’d be embarrassing. Apply a very neutral make up, remember, you don’t want him to think that you’re a make-up freak and guys love a girl with a natural look.

– 76 –

Now, if you plan to hit the town with your girls for a big night out, this next outfit is perfect for it! I allow you to wear something a bit crazy… We girls know that we all want to look better than our friends. Go for it! Rule #1 for a girls night out: “Wear all of the diamonds and golds and wear the Loub.” Ha! Rule #2: “Take off the Loub, if you know that you had too much drink and you can’t walk anymore.” Don’t ruin a $1,000 shoes. Rule #3: “Have fun!!”

I, personally, I like the idea of Valentine’s Day at home. A home-made cook and a movie. Food and snuggles. What’s not to like? You have to look sexy and effortlessly beautiful for your partner because Pajamas are not the answer. Remember, your outfit has to be completed with a new set of lingerie. Do your hair up, since you’ll be cooking. Pick an old classic movie and a perfect wine to finish up your romantic Valentine’s Day celebration. Happy Valentine’s Day! Love, Astrid.

TO TAKE CARE with

OMEGA 3 & OMEGA 6 by VERONICA

Have you ever heard about the importance of taking right amounts of Omega 3 and Omega 6? For sure you have, who doesn’t! But who knows what is really for?? Do you know the real sources of these fatty acids? Something about salmon, right?? I am interested and concerned about food, trying to balance my own diet as much as I can. But never ever really knew the difference, why 3 or 6? At this stage, I am taking a course related to nutrition and diet, and this issue is one of the first mentioned during the lectures. First of all, we should know that these are fatty acids. But don’t panic! They are nothing that will make you fatter or give you cellulitis. That means that they are in the form of triglyceride in the food, they are lipids that cannot be dissolved in water. Trying to explain the “scientific” part the easiest way. They are polyunsaturated fats that are formed by Carbon atoms. The atoms of saturated fats (the” bad ones”) are joined by a single link. But these “good ones” have double links connecting some atoms. Depending the position of the atom where the first double link appears, it is called

Omega 3 (third atom) and Omega 6 (sixth atom). Probably a chemist would find this quite simplistic explanation… But I hope it helped to get a general picture.

These are mainly known by the initials and you should find their amounts in the boxes of supplements when purchasing Omega 3 & Omega 6 supplements.

They are part of the cell membranes. Depending on the quality of the fats that we take, so are the qualities of our cell walls; their flexibility, impermeability and intercellular communication. This last one is very important for the neurons, the cells in our brain (especially during growth in childhood and during gestation).

Going further, I realized that even your liver is healthy and you take the right Omega 3 & 6 through food, there are some conditions and elements that can block the enzymes that help during these processes:

But I have learnt that it is not so easy to get the benefits of these Omega 3 & Omega 6. Once we take these fatty acids, it is necessary a complete process of transformation into different molecules, acids and substances. And the main condition for this to happen is to have a clean and healthy liver. If you think that your diet or liver are not good enough to process these lipids, you might take the option of getting a supplement. Some of the main substances that you should be able to transform into are: Linoleic Acid, GLA (Gamma Linoleic Acid), GLA (Gamma Linoleic Acid), EPA (Eicosapentaenoic acid) or DHA (Docosahexaenoic acid).

1. Too much saturated fats (red meats, dairy, palm oil) 2. Trans fats (bakery, junk packed food and fast food) 3. Lack of Zinc, Magnesium, Vitamin B6 & B8 4. Use of cortisone 5. High Stress 6. Excess of sugar. Special attention for diabetic people 7. During a big infection 8. During a cancer 9. Aging If you try to take care of your food in order to make sure you are including Omega 3 & Omega 6 in your diet, these are the main ideas you can remember when planning your meals:

1. Sources of OMEGA 6: - Nuts - Seeds - Cold press sunflower oil 2. Sources of OMEGA 3: - Fish, especially those from cold water. Ideally small ones (to avoid too much polluted fish). Not fried or over heated, high temperatures alter the levels of Omega 3 - Salmon (wild, not farmed since it has very low levels of Omega 3 due to type of feeding) - Canola oil, soybean, walnuts and leafy greens contain some small sources of Omega 3 - If you are vegetarian, you can also take flax seeds. But it needs to be grounded or bitten extremely well (needed to extract the main element). Flaxseed oil is also an option. After you have grounded the seeds, you better use in the next couple of days because Omega 3 oxidizes very fast. Pay attention to flaxseed oil if you take this option, don’t expose to light or heat. As for the frequency, for nuts and seeds, you can add every day a bit in your diet.

For Fish, two portions per week should be enough. If you go for the flaxseed option, pour each day 1 grounded teaspoon in your yogurt, cereals, juice, smoothie or milkshake. As for the nuts and seeds, I add a couple of teaspoons of a mix to my granola, salad or steam vegetables. Can also opt for sunflower oil to prepare your salads dressings. Therapeutic Uses: - OMEGA 6: Female disorders, especially related to PMS Minor breast tumors Skin disorders, especially eczema and dermatitis (for psoriasis better Omega 3) Multiple Sclerosis Allergies - OMEGA 3: Cardiovascular Diseases Nervous System Diseases Hypertension A combination of the two acids in a supplement is usually used for Rheumatism, Autoimmune and Inflammatory disorders, Hyperactivity

– 79 –

and lack of attention in children. If you start taking supplements or decide to adapt your diet for a better intake of these Omega 3 & Omega 6, note that the results need from one to three months to be noticed. Think that the walls of your cells need to be renewed again using the new acids, this will take some time.
