Letter from the President, Billy D. Hilyer It is with bittersweet emotions that I pen my final letter for the Faulkner Magazine. The end of this semester brings big changes for me and for Faulkner as I retire from the Office of the President.

Having spent a better portion of my life associated with this university, first as a student, then as an employee and finally as chief administrator, it should be no surprise that Faulkner has been more to me than just a school and workplace. Faulkner is home and Faulkner is family.

When I first came to work for my alma mater as an instructor and the dean of students in 1976, Alabama Christian College was a junior college. Over the years I have had the joy, and sometimes pain, of witnessing Faulkner’s evolution. With toil, sweat and lots of prayers, we took on the challenges of growth to become a fouryear college, expanding into adult education with satellite campuses, acquiring a law school, growing our athletic program and facilities, and continually adding to our academic offerings. Now we are venturing into education of the future with on-line learning.

What a blessing to have seen how God has worked through Faulkner to make the educational dreams of so many a reality while simultaneously serving the community and equipping the church!

The Faulkner of today is the legacy of many dedicated people, both past and present, and to all of them and you I say “thank you.” To our board of trustees, thank you for nurturing growth with your gift of time, support and advice; to our faculty and staff, thank you for your selfless dedication to our students’ success and for creating a nurturing educational environment that cannot be matched; to our alumni and friends, thank you for your continuous gifts and prayers that have allowed us to expand and plan for the future, and finally to our students, thank you for choosing Faulkner and for entrusting us with your dreams.

Though I leave the Office of the President, I do not leave Faulkner altogether. In my new role as chancellor I have the privilege of spreading the good word about Faulkner. It is a role in which I know I will excel because it is easy to talk about something in which you believe and love as much as I do Faulkner University.

AN INTERVIEW WITH

BILLY D. HILYER President Billy D. Hilyer has a quiet, humble confidence that only comes with shouldering great responsibility. For 29 years, President Hilyer has been responsible for Faulkner University. A first generation college student with the heart of a cowboy, Billy Hilyer has carried this school through times of plenty and times of lean. Across that time, Faulkner University has raised new buildings, and new members of the community. It has expanded academic programs, and the opportunities for Faulkner students. It has grown the size of their student body, and their reach across this nation. What has the passage of time taught Billy Hilyer? I sat down with him to find out.

BY CHRISTOPHER KRATZER What plans did you have for your life as a college student?

BDH: I went to high school in Tallassee and I remember the United States Air Force came through and administered a test.

I scored the highest of anybody in that school and they really came after me to join. I did think about it rather seriously, but they didn’t have as much to offer back in those days as they do today. I thought I would go to Auburn University and study engineering. But some things happened late in my senior year, and I ended up going to Alabama Christian College with some of my other buddies from Tallassee.

I didn’t have a clear plan to begin with, but my second year

at Alabama Christian College, I began to think more seriously about my life. When I was growing up, several in my home congregation would say, “you ought to be a preacher.” My mother, although she would be happy with whatever I did, said some things to encourage me to preach. My dad, though he was a farmer and cattleman, preached in country congregations. After my first year of college I began to think more seriously about things and with the encouragement of different ones at Alabama Christian, I decided to get a degree in Bible.

Tell me about how you met your wife?

BDH: A friend and I conducted a couple of revivals together during the summer. He was dating a girl at the school. We were holding this gospel meeting and she and her sister were going to drive over to hear him preach. Well, they didn’t get there and after the service was over they called and said they had car trouble. He and I went and picked them up. That was the first time I had ever met Kay. She was dating my best friend. So I went back to school in the fall, they were still dating at first but then they had a little interruption. During that time I asked a friend of mine who was a friend of hers to see if she would date me. She said that she would, so we started dating and we married the next fall.

What did your friend think about that?

BDH: We are still friends. I did not know if they had intended it to be a permanent break up, but we are still friends and we were okay with it.

How long have you two been married?

BDH: We will have been married fifty years next September.

How has your relationship changed? What is the most important thing you’ve learned fifty years later?

BDH: That’s one of the things young people don’t understand.

Relationships just get deeper if they’re the right kind. There is an understanding and appreciation.

She’s just the best thing that ever 6

happened to me. She’s been a wonderful wife, friend, partner and mother. Kay is one of the hardest working women I have ever known. I can be a little bit selfish, but she’s one of the most selfless people I’ve ever known. The children love her.

How did you get started working at Faulkner?

BDH: When I graduated from ACC, Dr. Rex Turner, who was president of Alabama Christian College at the time, told me that Alabama Christian owned Mobile Christian School. He said that they were in need of a principal. I went and I taught, made out payrolls, spanked the kids and tried to raise a little money.

I did that for a couple of years, and then I decided that I wanted to preach. I moved to a place called Lucedale, Mississippi and preached for several years.

In 1974, I got a call from Dr. E. R. Brannan, who was one of my mentors. He was a teacher at Alabama Christian while I was there and dean of academics. He was also an elder at the College Church. I went up and talked to them and they offered me a job as preacher. So we moved to Montgomery.

So there I was preaching and I remember the elders telling me, “We don’t want you to ever take a salary from Alabama Christian College.” What they meant by that was they were looking for a fulltime preacher. They knew that if I didn’t get involved to the point where I took salary, my main work would be the church. I hadn’t been there six months before Dr. Brannan, who had just been named president of the college said, “We need some help over here at the

school. I want you to work as a part-time counselor.” I reminded him of what the elders had said.

He said, “Don’t worry about the elders. I’ll talk to them.” I started off as part-time and then next fall he talked to the elders again and I started full-time as registrar. I continued to do the pulpit work for the College Church for another ten years.

What is the most important thing you’ve learned over the course of your career?

BDH: I’ve learned that the most important thing that contributes to success is having the right people.

When I first became president, we had a lot of financial problems, and there was a while there where I was consumed with the thought that if we just had more money everything would be great. Of course, your finances have to be solid, but your success depends most of all on having the right people.

“And I won’t ever forget what I said.

My exact answer was, ‘that’s alright brethren, I’m not sure I can do the job either.’”

Tell me the process of how you got appointed president.

BDH: In Feb. of 1986, I got a call from Jimmy Faulkner, the board chairman, and he said, “Billy, the school has some financial problems and I’m going to recommend to the board that we make you executive vice president.

I want to see if you can get control of these finances.” I thought that was an unusual request. That is something you would ask the president to do. I said, “Dr. Faulkner, I would be willing to do what I can, but I don’t have a background in business.” He said, “Well we want you to [do it anyway].”

I worked on it the best I could, and in July of that year I got another call from Dr. Faulkner. He said, “Brother Hilyer, there is going to be a change in the presidency.

I’m going to recommend that you serve as president until we can hire a new person.” Well, again I didn’t know exactly what to say. But I thought, “I did accept the position of executive VP and I guess I’m the logical person to serve in that role until they get somebody.” I thought it would be a few weeks or 6 months at the most. I knew that when they did bring in a new president there’d be a lot of changes. I had already begun to see things I thought needed changing, but I wasn’t going to put people through a lot of drastic changes only to have somebody do it again six months later. This was kind of a bucking horse I was on and my role was to just sit in the saddle as best I could and keep things in the middle of the road, then turn it over to a new person.

When I first became executive vice president, the financial problems weren’t all that apparent; they were still under the surface.

But six months passed, 12 months passed, 18 months passed, and they hadn’t found anybody. By this time, things were really critical.

We were unable to pay our bills.

We were beginning to struggle to make payroll, and in fact, we were missing some payrolls. Every day that passed, I knew things needed

to be done, decisions needed to be made. And of course to the board’s credit, they were trying to find someone that really had the experience, but they couldn’t find anybody. So somewhere along the way different board members began to say, “You ought to throw your hat in the ring.” I didn’t want to, but by that time I had at least become more comfortable with my ability to do it.

After almost 20 months, the board asked me to serve. I’ll never forget, two of the board members came out of the meeting, walked straight over to me and said, “Billy, we want you to know, and we want you to hear it from us, we did not vote for you. It’s not a personal thing against you; we’re just not sure you can do the job.” And I won’t ever forget what I said. My exact answer was, “That’s alright brethren, I’m not sure I can do the job either.”

I just stayed in there fighting, doing whatever I could. I had a lot of good help. I think we have brought a degree of financial stability to the school, and I’m excited. I think we’re poised to go to that next level.

What are some of the biggest shifts that have happened at Faulkner during your time as president?

BDH: Well, of course, our enrollment is quite a bit bigger.

Also the extension centers; when we started them in the 70’s in Mobile, Birmingham, Huntsville and Florence, that was unusual, especially for a private school.

Another thing that’s changed is our degree offerings. We have better than 60 degrees now, and if you add the various options that some of those degrees have, there are actually more than 90 different 7

directions people can take.

We’ve had to expand our facilities quite a bit and, of course, purchasing the law school in 1983 was a big change.

What is the most important piece of wisdom you’ve discovered over the past 30 years?

BDH: Probably the importance of human relations, of friendships, and of skills that help to nurture these kinds of relationships. We tend to think of solving problems in terms of strategies and techniques, and there are things in those areas that can be brought to bear on problems. But I think more often than not, success in almost every endeavor depends to a large degree on the ability to work well with other people.

Is there something that you were just totally wrong about, or a decision you made that was just completely the wrong decision?

BDH: When I first became president the faculty wasn’t totally on board. They were afraid, as we all were, about the school and

its future. It took me a long time to acknowledge this, but I was intimidated by the faculty. I was afraid to talk to them and didn’t want to hear what they had to say. I thought I knew where I was going, and they didn’t understand everything, but the fact remains that I wouldn’t talk to them much.

I didn’t want to hear them, and I realize now that that was a mistake. I wish that I had been more confident, more comfortable, more willing to talk with them.

First of all, there probably would have been some good ideas that would’ve come from that. Secondly, it would’ve given them the opportunity to express themselves, make them feel like they were a part of the solution. It’s always better to engage people than to shut them out. I’m pleased to say that I have learned better and I think my relationship with the faculty today is much better.

“I was the first in my family to go to college. I know how important going to college and completing a college education is. It can lift a whole family.”

What goes through your mind when you see how far this institution has come since you first got here?

BDH: Well, of course, there’s a degree of satisfaction, but I don’t really dwell on it. There are still other things we need to improve.

For example, our retention and completion rates could always be

improved. Some of the reasons for that are tied to who we are and to some things that I think are important. For example, I don’t want us to be an elitist school, even if we could be. We have a large number of first generation students. I was the first in my family to go to college. I know how important going to college and completing a college education is, not only to a student, but to an entire family. After I went, my brother went even though he was older than I was, and he finished graduate school. It can lift a whole family.

When people look back, what do you want them to think about your presidency?

BDH: I hope first of all they will say that while I was president we remained true to our mission, yet were able to grow the institution.

Maintaining a distinctive mission is tough, but it is extremely important. I think there has always been a need for Christian education, but there’s never been a greater need for it than there is today. We need places where young people can go and nurture that spirituality that is within them and be better prepared to meet the false philosophies that are being espoused in our society.

What has this institution meant to you coming in as a student, and now ending your career as president?

BDH: Obviously it’s been a tremendous part of my life. It helped me early on to examine myself and come to the realization that I needed to think about the important things of life. I found my wife there. Some of my closest

friends I met there, as well as some of my mentors - Dr. Brannan, Dr. Rex Turner, Leonard Johnson, and Don Earwood.

Outside of my mother and daddy, the people who have influenced my life most are those I met when I was a student at Alabama Christian.

Then coming back and working here, I think I work with some of the greatest people in the world. We encourage one another and work together. I think it’s the best job in the world. Where else can you go and work with people who for the most part love and care for each other. We don’t always agree but we get along with one another and we’re involved in a common cause.

I just want everybody to know what a joy it has been to work with all the faculty and staff at Faulkner. I don’t know how I could have been treated better or received more encouragement.

I think that the board and the faculty and staff have always been very kind and cooperative, they’ve worked hard and we’ve worked together. It hasn’t been just a working relationship but a friendship, and it has really meant a lot.

I can’t imagine any other job, any other profession, any other kind of work, holding the challenge for me that this one has and being as fulfilling. I think about what the school did for me personally and I believe that we are still making that difference in the lives of other young men and women. Some people make more money and do things that are more widely acclaimed, but when you’re working and helping people to grow more into the image of God I think that’s just the best work you can do.

A Woman of Noble Character: FAULKNER’S FIRST LADY, KAY HILYER, RETIRES When Kay Gafford married a dashing Bible major at Alabama Christian College (ACC) in 1965, she never imagined that decades later they would be back at her alma mater playing hostess to students, alumni and a variety of entertainers, cultural icons, and politicians.

In May, when her husband retires as president, so does Mrs. Hilyer, not only from her first lady duties, but also from her position as payroll coordinator.

The Hilyers spent nearly a decade serving various congregations, working in Christian education and raising their three children, Missy, John and David. Eventually, they were called to Montgomery to work with the College Church of Christ and ACC. But the job description would dramatically change when Dr. Hilyer was asked to serve as interim president of the college in 1986.

The offer was challenging.

The school was in deep financial distress, and the burden would fall on Dr. Hilyer. Mrs. Hilyer cautiously supported her husband’s decision to accept the offer.

“I knew he could do the job. I just didn’t want him to have the stress the position was going to entail,” she recalled. “But the job was only temporary until the board installed a permanent president. We just had to make it until a certain point.”

Twenty nine years later, they have finally reached that point.

Under Dr. Hilyer’s leadership

the college’s financial state turned around and headed down the road of growth. Mrs. Hilyer attributes the feat to her husband’s fiscal sense and good management skills.

“And he has always surrounded himself with good people,” Mrs. Hilyer added.

One of those “good people” has undoubtedly been Kay Hilyer. As first lady, Mrs. Hilyer has faithfully served the Faulkner family. It’s a role she has relished in light of all that Faulkner has accomplished.

“I used to take visitors off campus to entertain them, but now we stay on campus. We have outstanding faculty, facilities and programs to present.

Visitors love to see the faces of the students.”

As dedicated as she has been serving Faulkner, Mrs. Hilyer asserts that her primary duty has been behind the scenes: supporting her husband by creating a peaceful home.

“The job came with so many stresses that I wanted to maintain a home where he could relax and rejuvenate,” she explained.

As she makes her exit from the university, Mrs. Hilyer can look upon the results of her and her husband’s endeavors with great satisfaction.

“To see how Faulkner has become so much of an asset to the community has been very satisfying,” she said. “It is fun to say that my husband is the president of Faulkner University.”

Academic Profiles Current Student: Emily Donovan Meet Emily Donovan and her friend Tucker. Donovan, a sophomore from Prattville, Ala, is majoring in sports psychology.

She says she likes Faulkner and that it is a wonderful place to be. When asked why she chose Faulkner, Donovan quickly replied, “Project Key and Mrs. Pat Morrow!” She said that Morrow was willing to work with her and that is extremely important to Donovan. She suffers from Eahler-Danlos Syndrome, which is a connective tissue disorder characterized by articular (joint) hypermobility.

That simply means that her joints can easily be displaced. She also has Dysautonomia, which causes seizures. These things create challenges for Donovan during her daily routine. That’s where Tucker comes into the picture.

Tucker is Donovan’s service dog. If Donovan falls Tucker knows to stay with her until

help arrives. Tucker is trained to understand commands such as “brace”. When he hears this word, he tenses so that Donovan can lean on him and prevent a fall. He also picks things up for her. Before Tucker, if someone bumped Donovan, or if a joint came out of place, she would fall.

Since getting Tucker, Donovan says she has not fallen. Tucker is willing to get between her and danger.

Although Donovan has physical limitations, she has a delightful disposition, a bright, positive attitude and a high GPA. Pat Morrow, director of Project Key, says, “Emily has been a joy and has endured a great deal of adversity with grace.” Professors speak well of Donovan, and describe her as a very sweet and pleasant person to have in class with a desire to succeed. She is an asset to Faulkner. When asked how she would describe life, her statement was simple: “To God be all the glory.” __________________________

Current Student: Madison Wichterman Faulkner volleyball player Madison Wichterman is taking the role of assistant coach with Alabama-based Team USA volleyball at this year’s Special Olympic World Summer Games in Los Angeles. Though this is her first coaching opportunity, Wichterman has been involved with the organization for more than three years and she brings a unique perspective and personal history to the table when it comes to working with individuals with disabilities.

Wichterman participated as a unified partner on co-ed Special Olympic teams in 2013 and 2014.

Partners compete alongside Special Olympic athletes in an alternating pattern on the court creating unified teams “It’s going to be difficult transitioning from player to coach,” Wichterman said. “I won’t be able to interact with them on the court directly, but I’m looking

The Bible is full of stories of heroes and heroines, but the fact that we know how the stories end makes them appear more like fables than real-life stories. Living among us today, however, are Christian ladies who have faced many trials and tribulations. Like Bible heroines, they remain standing—strengthened in their faith, examples to all of us. The struggles these women have faced and the victories they have won are highlighted in this inspiring book in an attempt to encourage other Christian ladies in their daily walk with the Lord.

This book is intended to be used as a Bible study, either for personal study or for group discussions. It is further given to help Christian women in their journey of spiritual growth and development. Review questions and practical activities, nestled within each chapter, are designed to give additional insights, provoke thought, and encourage application of the materials presented. She teaches ladies Bible classes in her local congregation, is the pioneer writer for a ladies column in The Pulpit Watch, Nigeria, and is the author of Today’s Girl: The Physical, Spiritual and Emotional Development of the Girl Child (Citigate Publishers, 2002).

The freshman middle blocker credits her involvement with the Special Olympics as a major turning point in her life and career choice.

“When I was in high school I wanted to go into physical therapy,” she said. “After spending two years working with the program I realized that I really wanted to be in special education and now I’m on that path.”

Wichterman was also an influential figure at J.R. Arnold High School in Panama City, Fla., when it came to involving students with intellectual disabilities. One particular friend she made at a Special Olympics county meet has made a lasting impact.

“When I met Ryan Evans, the first thing he asked me was, ‘Will you be my friend?’ We were attached instantly and he’s been one of my closest friends since.”

Evans, an Arnold junior with autism, spent a great deal of time withdrawn from most social circles, but became more involved in the student body during the course of their twoyear friendship and sat next to

At the close of her senior year she received special recognition for her efforts in “the inclusion and acceptance of special needs peers.” The Madison Wichterman Award is now presented annually to students who follow in her footsteps.

Faculty profile: Jason Jewell Dr. Jason Jewell, professor/ chair of the Department of Humanities, has joined the editorial board of Libertarian Papers: A Journal of Libertarian Scholarship. Matthew McCaffrey, one of the journal’s editors, announced Dr. Jewell’s addition to the board on the journal’s website libertarianpapers.org.

McCaffrey says of Jewell, “He is also an associated scholar with the Ludwig Von Mises Institute and a faculty member of Tom Wood’s Liberty Classroom, where

Dr. Uduak Afangideh, associate professor of biology at Faulkner University, is author of Sister to Sister: Inspiring Stories of an Extraordinary God Transforming Ordinary Women Today, published in February of 2014. The book is designed to inspire and encourage women as they face struggles while striving to continue their daily walk as Christians. Proceeds from book sales benefit the Nigerian Christian Science College in Calabar, Nigeria.

Afangideh was recently chosen as the 2015 Woman of Hope for Healing Hands International (HHI). HHI began in 1991, with an idea from a marketing professor at Lipscomb University who extended a challenge to his students to try to meet the needs for medical supplies and equipment in the former Soviet Union and other Eastern European countries. The humanitarian effort exploded with success, and in 1993 was incorporated as Healing Hands International. The organization’s stated mission is “to extend the love of Jesus Christ to a lost and hurting world, allowing God to use our hands to carry out His healing work. Current student: Bethany Parker It’s not just faculty members being published at Faulkner University. One of Faulkner’s undergraduates recently had her first book published. Sophomore Bethany Parker has written Mark of the Corripian, book one of a four-part series. The book is available through Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and BAM. She has recently completed the first draft of her second book entitled Mark of the Orbis, and will soon begin editing.

Parker, a psychology major, transferred to Faulkner from Freed-Hardeman University in Fall 2014. She says that she began writing Mark of the

Corripian as a sophomore in high school to relieve boredom and to entertain her friends who loved to read. Parker says, “I almost quit writing the summer after I began the story, but my friends would constantly nag me for more chapters. I got back to work in order to appease them. Finally, the summer after finishing my junior year of high school, the story was completed.

I was satisfied to simply write a complete book at that point, but my father encouraged me send my manuscript to my current publishing house, Tate Publishing, and they accepted it and offered me a contract. The editing process consisted of over 30,000 word cuts (approximately 150 pages).” Parker also added, “God and my Christian faith have been influencing factors in all of my writings. My book is not technically Christian fiction, but my values and certain Biblical principles are scattered throughout the story. I hope to create a story that anyone can enjoy and at the same time find encouragement to persevere through all the difficulties that arise in this life.” __________________________

Itson

Faculty profile: Dennis Itson Dennis Itson recently announced his retirement after 25 years of service to Faulkner University. Cynthia Salyer, with the assistance of Dean Itson, Nancy Itson, Cathy Register, Zebulun Sipper, and Jane Fletcher, planned a wellattended retirement reception in Itson’s honor. The retirement ceremony was held in the atrium of the Harris Parker Building, Monday, November 10, 2014.

President Billy D. Hilyer spoke, thanking Itson for his dedication to Faulkner and applauding his stellar work ethic and positive influence through the years.

Itson began work at Faulkner as an admissions counselor, a role in which he was extremely successful and effective, and was then promoted to assistant director of admissions. Later he served as director of student activities, another good fit for Itson. During his tenure at Faulkner, he also served as director of enrichment, Jamboree producer, and FOCUS camp director. Itson’s latest position was director of service learning.

He was responsible for arranging service learning opportunities for students and ensuring that they acquired the necessary number of service hours. Itson will be missed around campus but his influence will be felt for years to come.

Family Tradition

What is the value of a Christian education? The four years of college are a time to mature and set the path of your life. My wife and I spent those years at Faulkner receiving a quality education from Christian teachers. We met many Christian people who remain our good friends today and we were able to mature in an environment that encouraged Christian behaviors. The value of a Christian education, for us, is immeasurable.

That’s why we encouraged our girls to attend Faulkner University. To know that they would be in a safe environment that shares the same Christian values that we taught them was vital. To know that they would get an excellent education from an established university was also very important to us.

THE TOTAL IMAGE Public tastes and preferences are always changing but never more frequently than in this age of social media when the average human attention span is a mere five minutes. The challenge for any product is to remain relevant in the minds of a preoccupied public.

In an effort to grab its share of consumer interest, Faulkner has revamped its marketing and public relations mission. Patrick Gregory, director of university marketing, explains why the new Faulkner look and message are sure to entice students to CHOOSE FAULKNER.

What has been the biggest change in marketing Faulkner University?

PG: We now have a marketing department, and for the first time, all areas of Faulkner’s university system can utilize the resources and talents of our marketing and public relations team. Previously, different departments of the university marketed themselves creating a variety of looks and messages. Additionally, and very importantly, we can produce our own campaigns in house including print, graphic design, video production, photography, social media promotion, online marketing, media buying and placement, event planning/ promotion and much more.

Most of those areas were previously outsourced. We do utilize the expertise of Tracy Holley, with Holley Marketing Consultants, for guidance with media placement and buying for our adult and graduate programs.

Jehle Flowers, a graphic artist with RICOH, who works in our office, does a tremendous job handling the various print creative needs that come into our office daily.

Christopher Kratzer was hired as our Associate Director of Public Relations in June of 2014. He, with assistance from Loren Howell, has been able to streamline our public relations efforts and they serve as the PR team for the entire university.

What is the advantage of this revamped, inhouse system?

How important is social media these days to marketing a university?

PG: First of all, doing it all in house saves a lot of money.

Having all the marketing under one roof helps to create a strong, consistent Faulkner brand and a cohesive message and call to action.We have a diverse learning community with campuses in four cities, community partner locations throughout Alabama and Mississippi and an on-line presence, but we are one university with a core mission to educate from a Biblical perspective in all our degree offerings.

Social media is a critical part of Faulkner’s marketing strategy.

We are working to build an ongoing conversation with fans and followers. So many businesses just “talk at” their consumers through social media, but we want to bring them in and let them be a part of the university’s online presence.

Providing users with content that matters to them is the key pillar of our strategy.

What is the message Faulkner wants to convey?

PG: We recently adopted the slogan “I Choose Faulkner.” In each campaign and promotion, we want to convey that we care about our students’ success.

We stress small classes, caring instructors, and a Christian, family-like atmosphere. Those tenets pervade all our courses of study: undergraduate, graduate and degree completion programs.

The Faulkner website has been revamped, too. How important is the website to this new marketing plan?

The website is the home plate to all our promotions. We want all advertisement to drive people to Faulkner.edu because it provides the most comprehensive information about all facets of the university.

In August of 2014 we hired a web manager, Sutherland Boswell. He has completely re-tooled our new website to make it even more functional and responsive.

He was able to increase the speed of the site by 45%, and made it truly mobile. That translates to a more positive experience for the end user. The new web site is very user friendly. It is easy to navigate and provides direct paths to each aspect of the university. It is constantly being updated with the latest information.

So ultimately why should a student “Choose Faulkner?”

There are many educational choices out there now, especially in light of online degree offerings.

The Faulkner difference is that each of our students – undergraduate, graduate, adult, law or online - is a name and not a number and that above all the core of our curriculum is the Bible.

So much changes so quickly these days and Faulkner will continually endeavor to stay in step with those changes. But one aspect of Faulkner never wavers: our commitment to educate the whole person - mind, heart and soul.

FAITHFUL TRANSFORMATIVE “Dr.

Gleaves, do you have a minute? I need to talk with you,” said the student respectfully and reluctantly.

I looked up from my desk and saw only the student’s head poking through the doorway. “Absolutely,” I replied energetically, “come in.”

As the student entered my office I arose from behind my desk and walked toward a round conference table, pulled out a chair for the student, and sat down beside him.

“How can I help you?” I already knew why he had come to see me for he was holding a drop/add course form in his hand. He came to me because he knew that he had to have permission from the dean

of the college of biblical studies to drop a Bible course. Every student at Faulkner University must take a course in the college of biblical studies every semester or 15 hours of course credit. Midway into each semester, I have a steady stream of students seeking to drop their Bible courses.

“I’m not doing so well in my Bible class so I want to drop the course,” the student said in a hopeful manner. “Besides,” he continued, “I’m not a Bible major, and I don’t see why I have to take Bible courses.”

That was the perfect opening for me to reiterate the centrality of the Bible at Faulkner University

in every student’s program, Bible major or not. I’m sure that the last thing that the student wanted to hear was an explanation of the mission of the university. But I believe situations like this are wonderful opportunities to share with students why the study of the Bible is too important for any student to take for granted.

Courses in the biblical text and in Christian doctrine, ethics, leadership, and ministry help shape a student’s worldview, character, and spiritual formation.

“I’m not going to allow you to drop your Bible course,” I said with a sense of mission. I continued, “There’s plenty of time left in the

semester for you to pull your grade up. Contact your professor and ask for assistance. And most importantly of all, attend class.

You’re a good student, and I truly believe that this Bible course will have a positive impact upon you and upon your future.”

Shaping purpose, character, and destiny is the business of the V. P. Black College of Biblical Studies.

Our commitment to Christ, to the church, and to biblical truth undergirds our service to every student. I believe that the highest form of learning is the knowledge of God and that the greatest act of love is service to God’s glory.

The college of biblical studies is unique within Faulkner University in that we directly impact all students for the simple reason that the ultimate need of every human being is a spiritual relationship with God through Jesus Christ.

As a Christian university, the college of biblical studies encourages the assimilation of faith and learning in three distinctive ways: 1. We immerse students in a Christian worldview as defined in Scripture through academics, social activities and community service.

2. We expose students to people of biblical faith, both in the classroom and in the community life on campus.

3. We dialogue with students about the true meaning of faith in order to help them think through difficult and disturbing questions, issues or challenges that they may be experiencing or pondering.

In essence, our purpose is to educate the spirit, soul, and body of all students for the purpose of preparing them to minister to a world that desperately needs God

in whatever field they may choose to earn a living (1 Thessalonians 5:23).

Many exciting advances have been made in recent years in the V. P. Black College of Biblical Studies. In 2013, the Kearley Graduate School of Theology was established. Dr. Randall Bailey was appointed as director of programs in the graduate school. Bailey has extensive academic and Christian education experience. He leads by example and epitomizes Christian cordiality and professionalism.

Besides that, he’s just a pleasure to be around.

Four degree programs are now offered through the graduate school: • Master of Arts (Biblical Studies) • Master of Arts in Christian Ministry • Master of Arts in Christian Counseling and Family Ministry • Doctor of Philosophy in Biblical Studies All programs in the graduate school can be completed online utilizing collaborative technologies.

Enrollment in the graduate program grew from 21 students in 2013 to just under 50 students in 2014. The first doctoral class began with 10 students in the fall of 2014.

“There’s a sense of family among the students and faculty,” said Bailey, “that creates a strong bond between us. This sense of family is even felt by our online students, something that many universities do not have” Bailey reports that after one potential doctoral student interviewed every professor and nearly every doctoral student in the program he said, “I’ve never seen anything like this; it’s like being in a family where everyone is extremely helpful and encouraging.”

Dr. Todd Brenneman joined the college of biblical studies in 2013 as assistant professor of Bible and Christian history.

He was appointed the director of undergraduate studies the following year. Brenneman brings to the table both academic and ministerial experience. Since his leadership style is both visionary and collaborative, he is ideally suited to direct the six undergraduate programs in biblical studies. “The major issue that we need to address,” says Brenneman, “is what it means to be Christian in the 21st century. All of the major ethical and spiritual challenges Christians face have to be responded to in a consistent, biblical manner.”

The success of the V. P. Black College of Biblical Studies and Kearley Graduate School of Theology depends upon devoted, capable, and passionate faculty members, administrative staff, and Christian supporters.

My mission as dean can be characterized as one of faithful advancement. The next five years will be truly transforming as the college advances toward its academic, ministry, and enrollment goals. During this transformation, however, the college of biblical studies will remain tethered to the principles upon which it was founded, to the principles of Christianity revealed in the New Testament, and to the principles inherent in the American Restoration Movement.

FAULKNER LAW WELCOMES Dean Matt Vega Faulkner Law welcomed a new dean, Matt A.Vega, in June 2014. After a nationwide search,Vega was selected to succeed former Dean Charles Nelson, who retired after ten years of service to the school.

Prior to his appointment as dean,Vega was a member of the Faulkner Law faculty.

Vega’s familiarity with the law school and its mission made him an ideal candidate for his new position. “Having joined the faculty in 2007,” said Vega, “I have seen firsthand the law school’s transformation as an American Bar Association accredited institution. I have watched Faulkner Law establish itself academically, and I have witnessed a spirit of service in our faculty and students that is unmatched by other law schools. It is the combination of providing the best practical legal education in a caring, Christian community that makes Faulkner Law unique.”

Vega is a 1993 graduate of Yale Law School and a 1990 summa cum laude graduate of FreedHardeman University. He is a member of both the Alabama and Tennessee Bar Associations.Vega began his professional career as an associate at Sirote & Permutt in Birmingham, Alabama. He later served as corporate counsel for Bruno’s, Inc., Advantica Restaurant Group, Inc., and Federal Express Corporation.

Under Vega’s direction, Faulkner Law is continuing to excel. Enrollment in the matriculating class of 2014 is up ten percent. The nationally ranked advocacy program continues to win national titles. In just over one year, the program won five national championships and earned spots in both the National Moot Court Tournament of Champions and the prestigious Top

Gun Trial Tournament.

The Faulkner Law Review is quickly becoming the leading student-led journal focused on cutting-edge legal issues facing the common law tradition.

And, the Faulkner Clinics and Externship Program are providing valuable legal services to the River Region while offering students practical experience in mediating local district court cases, counseling clients on elder law issues, and helping victims of domestic violence.

“I am confident that we are heading in the right direction of continued growth and improvement for Faulkner Law,” said Vega. “However, while it is nice to reflect on our recent success, I want to focus my attention to the future of our institution.

The administration is planning to implement several new initiatives

that will bring positive change to our students, faculty, administration, and staff. I am dedicated to seeing those initiatives through so that Faulkner Law will continue to be the law school of choice for students who wish to receive an outstanding legal education at a Christian institution.”

Confidence in Vega’s ability to lead Faulkner Law is high. “Dean Vega has the knowledge and skill needed to take this law school to the next level,” said Nelson, former dean of Faulkner Law. “I look forward to seeing where he leads this institution.”

Faulkner University’s president, Billy D. Hilyer, also praised Vega’s leadership skills. “Matt Vega has a great vision for the future of Jones Law School and will work collaboratively with the faculty there to develop

and implement a strategic plan for continued growth and success,” said Hilyer.

“Matt is a proven and experienced attorney, and an accomplished legal scholar and teacher.

I have no doubt that the law school will continue to excel in preparing its graduates to contribute to the legal profession under his leadership.”

While excited about Faulkner Law’s future, Vega recognizes that his new position will bring new responsibility. “It is truly an honor to serve in the position of Faulkner Law dean, and it is a responsibility that I do not take lightly,” said Vega. “I am grateful for the opportunity, and I am excited to see how this new chapter in Faulkner Law’s story unfolds.”

Dean Charles Nelson ended his tenyear tenure as dean of Faulkner Law on May 10, 2014. Following a six month sabbatical, he rejoined the Faulkner Law faculty to teach Property and Wills and Trusts.

Nelson became dean of Faulkner Law in 2004 after leaving Pepperdine University’s School of Law where he had spent thirty-three years in the roles of professor and, later, assistant dean.

Before accepting the position at Faulkner Law, Nelson considered retiring and moving back to Texas where he had practiced law years before. Instead, he chose to move to Montgomery and accept the challenge of attaining accreditation for the law school.

Nelson said that he can still recall the moment when he received the phone call that Faulkner Law received accreditation from the American Bar

Association. “I didn’t really know what to do,” he said. “I remember looking out of my office - seeing everyone going about their business. I couldn’t decide whether I should try and get everyone together to relay the good news, or simply raise my arms in the air and let out a big yell.” He decided to do the latter.

While on sabbatical, Nelson spent time traveling with his wife.

They visited California for a wedding, San Antonio for Thanksgiving, and cruised to Canada and New England. He also enjoyed the opportunity to spend time with his two daughters and grandchildren.

When asked what advice he would give to current Dean Matt Vega, Nelson said that patience was key. He continued, “Dean Vega has the knowledge and skill needed to take this law school to the next level. I look forward to seeing where he will lead Faulkner Law.”

Faulkner Law Pioneers Pro Se Assistance Program in Federal Court

Faulkner Law Wins Buffalo Niagara National Trial Competition

Faulkner University’s Jones School of Law, in partnership with the United States District Court for the Middle District of Alabama and the Federal Bar Association, recently launched a pro se assistance program in federal court. Under the direction of attorney volunteers from the Federal bar, Faulkner Law students assist civil litigants who lack legal counsel in drafting pleadings and in the mediation process. Faulkner Law is one of the first law schools in the country with a program of this kind, and is pleased to make this valuable service available to pro se litigants.

Faulkner Law brought home its first national title of the 2014 advocacy season with a win at the Buffalo Niagara National Trial Competition. This is Faulkner Law’s ninth national advocacy title, and the sixth win within the last two years.

The Faulkner Law team consisted of second and thirdyear students Jeri Arrington, Jamie Campbell, Elliott Smith and Scott Smith. In addition to the national title, Jamie Campbell was awarded best opening statement, Elliott Smith was awarded best advocate in the final round and Scott Smith was awarded best direct examination.

Elder Abuse in the River Region

Faulkner Law is helping to lead the fight against elder abuse in the River Region. Along with the One Place Family Justice Center, the Department of Human Resources, and Montgomery law enforcement, Faulkner Law has joined the Montgomery County Elder Justice Task Force. The task force was created by Montgomery County District Attorney, Daryl Bailey (JSL ’96), with the purpose of preventing exploitation of the elderly, providing resources for victims, and raising community awareness regarding the growing problem of elder abuse. Faulkner Law’s involvement is led by John Craft, director of the law school’s Elder Law Clinic.

Faulkner Law hosts Charity Golf Tournament Faulkner Law hosted the 10th Annual Don Garner Charity Golf Classic on October 3, 2014, at the Arrowhead Country Club.

The four-man scramble featured a $50,000 shoot-out and other contests including long-drive, closest-to-the-pin, putting and a hit-the-green. Proceeds from the tournament benefitted the Student Disaster Relief Fund, which assists students who experience a natural disaster or other financial crisis during their time at Faulkner Law.

Faulkner Law Alumna Awarded Maud McLure Kelly Award Ernestine S. Sapp (JSL ’77) was awarded the 2014 Maud McLure Kelly Award by the Alabama State Bar. The award celebrates female attorneys whose accomplishments in law have paved a path of success for others to follow.

Sapp’s accomplishments have broken down many barriers for women and minorities in the field of law. Among many other “firsts,” Sapp was the first AfricanAmerican graduate of JSL to be admitted to the Alabama Bar. As an alumna, Sapp remains active with Faulkner Law. She is a frequent supporter of law school events, and a constant source of encouragement for Faulkner Law students. The Faulkner Law chapter of the Black Law Students Association is named after her.

Faulkner Law Alumni Pursue Justice in the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office Faulkner Law provides students with opportunities to experience the rewards of public service prior to entering the legal profession through Faulkner Law’s Externship Program, clinics, and the Jones Public Interest Law Foundation.

Because of this exposure, many Faulkner Law graduates choose careers in public service.

The Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office is no exception. Eleven Faulkner Law

alumni, including Montgomery County District Attorney Daryl Bailey (JSL ’96) and Chief Deputy District Attorney Azzie Taylor (JSL ’96), call that office home. Faulkner Law is proud to be associated with the many alumni serving the public inside and outside Alabama.

Faulkner Law Wins Mercer National Moot Court Competition Faulkner Law won the 2014 National Legal Ethics and Professionalism Moot Court Competition, which was held November 20-23, 2014, at Mercer University. After six rounds of competition, Faulkner Law won the national title, and brought home the second national title of the fall 2014 advocacy season.

The Faulkner Law Mercer Moot Court team consisted of Claire Burns, Audrey Liston and Andrew Poston. The team was coached

by Faulkner Law Professor and Director of Advocacy Joe Lester.

During the competition, Faulkner Law defeated John Marshall Law School Chicago, Georgia State University College of Law, Savannah Law School, Drexel University Thomas R. Cline School of Law, Stetson University College of Law, and University of Georgia School of Law.

Bartels to lead Special Olympics Team USA IN 2015 WORLD SUMMER GAMES Faulkner head volleyball coach Tori Bartels has been selected to lead one of two unified volleyball teams representing the United States in the 14th Special Olympic World Summer Games in Los Angeles.

More than 7,000 of 4.4 million Special Olympic athletes from across the globe representing 177 nations will converge in Los Angeles to compete in 25 Olympic-type sports in July. Special Olympic Team USA features approximately 350 athletes competing in 17 of the events which include among others aquatics, boccee, cycling, equestrian, golf, gymnastics, kayaking, powerlifting, sailing and triathlon.

The Alabama-based volleyball team is comprised of 12 participants and three coaches. The Special Olympic athletes include Daniel Dabbs, Stephen Dunman, Will Horner, Warren Philips, David Tyler and Gideon Weigel.

Joining the group are six unified partners which include Faulkner students Jonathan Goodrum, Douglas Hamilton and Carter Moles and football players Javonte Drinkard, Jalen Ragland and Xavier Triche. Partners compete alongside Special Olympic athletes in an alternating pattern on the court. Such groups are referred to as unified teams.

In addition to Alabama, a unified team from New Jersey and a traditional team out of Michigan will represent the US in volleyball.

“I’m not even sure how I was selected for this,” Bartels said. “Many of my Faulkner players were involved in the Eunice Kennedy Shriver Day here during preseason. There were numerous teams on campus and my girls worked with the volleyball participants. Someone with the Special Olympics must have received positive feedback, so here we are.”

Bartels has a bachelor’s degree in education and spent the first few years of her coaching career predominantly in the classroom. The full inclusion learning environment allowed her to teach students with disabilities without a specific special education program. In addition, her more than 15 years of coaching experience with players of all ages will be indispensable in successfully working with the Special 26

Olympics volleyball team.

While Bartels is spearheading the training and preparation for the team, Faulkner volleyball players Madison Wichterman and Sarah Dubberley will serve as assistant coaches. Both athletes have been passionate in their roles so far and each contributes a unique perspective and personal history when it comes to working with individuals with disabilities.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for me to work in an environment I’m passionate about in a completely new way,” Bartels said. “I’m looking forward to the triumphs and challenges as well as working closely with two of my Faulkner players who likely bring as much, if not more, to this venue than I do.”

Wichterman has previously been involved with Special Olympics where she served as a Unified Partner in the Panama City, Fla., area. Her passion spilled over into J.R. Arnold High School where she began focusing her attention on further involving students with intellectual disabilities in school life and activities. At the close of her senior year she received special recognition for her efforts in “the inclusion and acceptance of special needs peers.” The Madison Wichterman Award is now presented annually to students who follow in her footsteps.

Although this is Dubberely’s first venture into Special Olympics work, she’s no stranger to helping individuals with disabilities. She volunteered at the Father Walter Memorial Child Care Center in Montgomery while in high school and that experience helped solidify her decision to pursue special education as career path. Dubberely said she has also “grown tremendously in patience and understanding” through her interactions with her brother-in-law who has Aspergers.

The Alabama participants will join all of the Special Olympic Team USA coaches and athletes in Indianapolis for a parade and six-day training camp beginning on Thursday. Bartels, Wichterman and Dubberley will enter the training on Saturday.

“We’ve had a few short practices so that the coaches, athletes and unified partners could have the opportunity to meet and work together before

the Indianapolis trip,” Bartels said. “It’s already been an incredibly enriching experience. The nine of us representing the Faulkner family certainly feel privileged to be a part of this wonderful event and I know these relationships will impact everyone involved for the months and years to come.”

The opening ceremony for the Games will be held at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on July 25. In all, more than half a million family, friends, volunteers and fans are expected at the games with an estimated 80,000 spectators attending the opening ceremony alone. ESPN has announced a programming partnership with LA2015 and will extend coverage to millions of fans around the world.

Honorary chairs for this year’s Games are President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama with Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti and California Gov. Jerry Brown serving as Honorary Hosts.

The closing ceremony is scheduled for Aug. 2.

THE VOICE OF FAULKNER UNIVERSITY If you measure success as being able to work in a career that you love and being part of a great team, then you can understand why Doug Amos feels very blessed here at Faulkner and in his role as the “Voice of Faulkner”.

After two years in a career that, according the Doug, “left much to be desired,” Doug paid a visit to his old high school coach and the simple advice he was given changed his life. “Make your passion your career,” the coach told Doug.

Soon after, Doug walked into the Montgomery Advertiser and told the sports editor that he wanted to learn everything about the business. “Within a year and a half I was covering Alabama and Auburn football and golf,” says Amos, “the golf beat got me connected. Then a local radio show wanted me to be a guest on Fridays before football games.” Doug soon realized that talking on a deadline was much easier than writing on a deadline so he left the newspaper and went to radio full time.

Doug’s radio career took off. He was able to team with local radio legend, Jim Fyffe, and over the next nine years they built a large and loyal audience for their daily program. In 1996 Doug contacted Faulkner University to gauge their interest in broadcasting basketball games. “We worked out an agreement to broadcast 12 games. After that, Faulkner approached me about coming here full time.” says Amos.

Since coming on board at Faulkner, Doug has been named the assistant athletic director and has developed the Faulkner Sports Network - FSN.

“I started FSN when I came here in 1998 and it has evolved into some level of broadcasting every home sporting event and many road sporting events. We incorporate everything involving media into FSN.” Under Doug’s leadership, FSN now broadcasts every Faulkner football game, every home men’s and women’s basketball game (plus all the away conference games) and the home baseball games.

Doug also realized that to take FSN to the level that he hoped, he would need to bring on more talent. Ryan Bartels joined FSN and has been Doug’s right-hand-man ever since. Besides covering the teams that Doug cannot cover due to time constraints – volleyball, soccer, softball and golf – Ryan is an award-winning graphic artist and professional photographer. “Ryan is the best I’ve ever seen at both (photography and design) and that compliments my talents incredibly well. That’s why FSN has really taken off,” Amos continued “We try to do things very professionally and really kind of above and beyond what most schools at our level do. Our athletic department has that family type relationship. I think we have a great staff and a group of coaches that care about their kids. They’re compassionate, and want to win the Faulkner way.”

A day in the life of Doug Amos is sometimes more than 24 hours, it seems. “Since I walked into the Advertiser, I’ve never worked a day in my life. It’s been a dream for sure. It’s a very time-consuming job. It’s not an 8-5 job for sure. But, it’s where I’m supposed to be. There’s no doubt in my mind.”

Graves leads 27 Faulkner student-athletes receiving academic honors Faulkner center Elliott Graves, a junior from Lawrenceville, Ga., has been selected to the Capital One 2014 Academic All-America Football team College Division. The College Division football team includes student-athletes from the NAIA, Canadian and twoyear institutions.

The team was voted on by the College Sports Information Directors of America, and takes into account success on the field and in the classroom.

Graves, who has 35 career starts for the Eagles and is a twotime All-Mid-South Conference second team selection, has a 3.88 grade-point average in business administration.

Graves has made the CoSIDA Academic All-District team the past two years, and it’s from that team the College Division All-America team is selected.

“It is certainly a tremendous honor for Elliot to receive recognition for the type player he is on the field and the type of student he is off of it,” head football coach Charlie Boren said. “We are very proud as an athletic department of the work and contributions that Elliott has made on the football field as our starting center, as well as the work that he does as our student body president. Elliot is obviously a well-rounded individual and certainly a credit to all of us at Faulkner University.”

In addition, Graves was one of 27 Faulkner student-athletes to receive all-academic honors at the conference level for the fall sports of football, volleyball, and women’s and men’s

soccer. To be selected to all-academic teams at the conference level a studentathlete must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.25 and must be at least a sophomore academically.

Of the 27 fall sports all-academic selectees, 10 were named NAIA Scholar-Athletes, which requires a 3.5 GPA and junior status academically.

Faulkner competes in the Southern States Athletic Conference in all sports but football, which participates in the

The 10 NAIA Scholar-Athletes are Graves, Lo, Renfroe, Chemweno, Hill, Gemmell, Maidens, Poehler, Strath and Watson.

NEW PRESIDENT Mike Williams Over the past year, Faulkner has been conducting a nationwide search for its next president.

The search is over.

At the end of this academic year, President Billy D. Hilyer will be handing the reigns over to Mike Williams.

“I believe the brightest days of this institution are ahead, and I believe that Mike Williams is the man who can lead us into that bright future,” Hilyer said. “He is a humble man.

He’s a man of good heart and of good spirit.”

Williams comes to Faulkner after 28 years of serving Harding University. During his time at Harding, Williams has served as the director of admissions, assistant vice president of enrollment services and most recently as the vice president of advancement. Williams received both his bachelor and master of business administration from Harding. He received a doctorate of education from the University of Pennsylvania.

Williams has had immense success in both admissions and advancement; two areas where success is easy to define but difficult to achieve.

“Dr. Williams was selected to lead Faulkner University because he has proved he can reach 30

beyond the reasonable.” said Bud Stumbaugh, chairman of Faulkner’s Board of Trustees. “One of many examples of this occurred when his previous university charged him with leading a 5-year campaign to raise $105 million. The 2008 great recession made this goal look impossible. The institution exceeded the goal and raised $129 million. He has shown he can stretch and not stay stuck in the status quo. Our board is confident Mike will lead Faulkner not only to accomplish what people think can be done, but what people think can’t be done.”

Williams is looking forward to jumping into the new role.

“It is a tremendous honor to be selected as the 8th President of Faulkner University. I am humbled by the confidence of the Board of Trustees,” Williams said. “It will be a privilege to serve in concert with this distinguished group of Christian scholars and outstanding student body. Faulkner has a rich heritage as a Christ-centered institute of higher learning. I look forward to joining the university community as we craft a bold, ambitious vision for the future.”

Williams will assume his new role as president of Faulkner University on June 1.

ALUMNI PROFILES Annie Butterworth Jones Faulkner Grad Owns ‘Shop Around the Corner’ “I spent three years at the feet of some incredible teachers who ultimately became mentors and friends, and their example has influenced a lot of who I am today.” Annie Butterworth Jones graduated from Faulkner as the 2008 valedictorian with a degree in journalism. She is now the co-owner and managing partner of The Bookshelf, an independent bookstore in Thomasville, Georgia.

Jones credits her time at Faulkner for giving her what she needed to be able to take on owning a business.

“I never took a business course, but in my liberal arts and journalism classes, I learned most of the skills I need to run the store. Owning a bookstore is very different from owning another retail business; I have to stay on top of trends in the publishing industry, and being able to read both for quantity and quality is something I learned in my Great Books classes,” Jones said.“Every

day, I have to think critically and logically and make big and small decisions for my business; a liberal arts degree gave me just the education I needed -- and wanted.”

Jones fondly speaks of her favorite times at Faulkner, recalling discussions of the great books in our world’s history, or editing stories and photos for the newspaper. Since becoming coowner of the bookstore, she has become fond of advanced reader copies, the column she writes for Thomasville’s local newspaper, 31

After graduating from Faulkner, Jones worked a quiet, journalism desk job. It was a job she enjoyed, but didn’t love. She began to wonder if it might be time to make a change. She had always been an admirer of You’ve Got Mail’s Kathleen Kelly, and developed the dream of owning her own “Shop Around the Corner.”

Little did she know, that dream would become reality.

A managing position was open at The Bookshelf, a local bookstore in Jones’ hometown of Tallahassee, Florida. She jumped at the offer. One year later, she was given the chance to buy into, and ultimately take over, The Bookshelf in Thomasville. Jones and her husband, Jordan, also a graduate of Faulkner, prayed and decided to close the Tallahassee store, and move to Thomasville in 2014.

It’s plain to see that Jones is passionate about what she does.

From her interactions with customers, to straightening the shelves and hand-picking the

books that will go on them, Jones puts everything she has into running The Bookshelf. Because of this, her personality, her education and her faith can’t help but shine through. She works to offer a place to which friends and neighbors can go where their names will be remembered, books will be recommended and discussed, and Jesus will be shown. In taking on The Bookshelf and pursuing her dream, Jones has cultivated a store where beauty and excellence are easy to find.

Kevin Long In it for the Long Haul It wasn’t always Kevin Long’s (2008) dream to own a transportation company.

“A family member introduced me to the idea, and after some research my wife and I bought our first truck,” Long said.

But owning his own business is something that comes naturally to Long.

“My brother and I purchased a mobile home park while we were students at Faulkner and our professors went out of their way to help us succeed.”

Long says he realized being his own boss has a lot of advantages.

He enjoys the flexible schedule

5 and time with family.

It was Faulkner University that gave Long the tools he needed to build a successful business.

He says it’s a combination of caring professors and networking opportunities that brought him success.

“I chose to attend Faulkner because I was confident it would provide the Christian atmosphere that I desired. The small classes and tight knit campus community made Faulkner feel like home,” Long said. “I have a large network because of the relationships I made there.”

Long says the key to running a successful business is knowing

your industry inside and out, and building relationships with people that can help along the way.

“I would encourage entrepreneurs to learn as much about your industry as possible.

Work for someone else first and apply that knowledge to your own business when you’re ready. Be creative!” Long said.

“Remember, you do not have to fund a business solely with your own money. Build relationships with local bankers that will help fund your business and provide guidance along the way. Start up loans are easier to obtain if a banker knows and trusts you.”

Terry Garcia Cooper Cooper Walks to School, Uphill Both Ways, in Snow Terry Garcia Cooper, Faulkner alumna, teaches at June Nelson Elementary in Kotzebue, Alaska, in Inupiaq Village, which is 27 miles above the Arctic Circle. Her commute is one mile, of which Terry says, “It is a mile walk to the school, so I walk. The kids walk and school doesn’t close until it reaches 50 below zero.”

She went on to earn a Master of Science in clinical psychology from Auburn University in Montgomery in 2012. Amanda began working with the neuropsychology department at The University of Alabama, Birmingham (UAB) in August 2013, and was recently promoted to program coordinator for her department.

Additionally, she was chosen to serve as the research study coordinator for a five-year study funded by the American Cancer Society, which will examine the effects of metastatic brain cancer and pancreatic cancer on medical decision making and other cognitive abilities. Amanda also has plans to further her education by obtaining a doctoral degree.
