Shopping Cloud a shopper’s dream Studio Graduate thesis | Spring 2019 Location Mexico City, Mexico Program transit hub + shopping cloud Project Description Shopping cloud is an immersive experience wherein architecture’s boundaries disappear to augment the shopping experience.

Introducing a boundary-less interior space, architectural elements are abstracted into three-dimensional grid pieces, giving the new supergrid limitless power to stimulate constant interactions between the goods and the clientele.

Aligned with today’s contemporary voyeuristic culture, architecture in this proposed world now actively participates in the spatialization of the gaze; embracing it and exploiting it to propose a new system of information control. Constantly subject to the machine’s eyes, the shoppers are manipulated by the building’s artificially intelligent use of uninterrupted accumulation of visual data: augmented with the clientele’s brands appreciation history, mirrored and branded reflections of your shopping self are exhibited on the walls.

Active inlay shifting + excavation with a camshaft Studio Dwayne Oyler Vertical Studio | Spring 2019 Location Little Tokyo, Los Angeles, CA Program modern art museum Project Description The studio begins by looking at objects that are made of multiple parts which have relationships such as interconnecting, interlocking and intersecting, (for example Japanese joinery, a lock and key, mechanical fasteners, etc.). The idea was to study these kinds of relationships, which can be transferred into conceptual (such as programmatic, circulation) and formal (such as function, form dependent) across scales.

Considering the brief given by studio, our chosen object was a camshaft which is a mechanical part inside a car engine. The unusual rotational movement of the camshaft inside the engine due to its ellipsoidal shaped cams was the concept we took away from the object of our choice to design our massing. Our ‘active inlay’ massing has two main parts, the larger host piece and the linear central camshaft looking object inside. The inconsistent rotational movement of the central piece caused the host to be excavated and destructed, creating negative spaces as well as several openings and cuts. By drastically shifting and rotating the interior piece, we excavated the host to create spatial relationships between the two. By boolening three different positions of the central object, our final massing became this complex form that represents the ideas of irregularity, movement, and excavation. After its destructive movements, the camshaft becomes the interlocking element that holds the host pieces together. To further emphasize the difference between the hosts and inlay piece, we choose opposing materials: rough metal for the hosts and shinier chrome material for active inlay.

Finally, the way this final massing situates itself on the site becomes curial for the design. To exaggerate the concept of excavation and destruction, we excavated away a substantial amount of the site and buried our object inside this excavation. This positioning of the final massing created an imbalanced look — the hollowed site allowed for a sloped entrance to our building which becomes a public plaza.

Transparent an addition to Warner Grand Theater Studio Marcelo Spina Vertical Studio | Fall 2018 Location San Pedro, Los Angeles, CA Program performance center addition for the esxisting Warner Grand Theater Project Description In this project, the idea of collage, manipulation, and curation plays an important role not only as of the means of representation but also for form-making. The careful cropping and overlapping of different parts of the existing building become the method of making new images.

The instrument we chose to use to investigate this method further is the ceiling rosette of the Warner Grand Theater. This prominent detail inside the building is one of the most eye-catching and striking elements building has to offer, which is nearly impossible to spot from the exterior. The use of Lidar Scans begins to offer transparency of this ornamental detail. Machine vision offers a glimpse of the exterior and interior at the same time. Therefore, in our project, we decided to engage with this piece fully and investigate its fullest potential as form, texture, and material.

From the oblique, our building stands as a monolith. When viewed from the front, the face opens up and offers views through the object. The same gesture is applied to the interior faces, varying the depth and density of extrusions to crave out volumes in the oblique but remain fully transparent when viewed from the frontal axis. Finally, by remapping our object with the texture, we created by again collaging the rosette, becoming an engraving on our object. By doing all of these, our project explores the relationship between the function of ornament and transparency.

‘Ruin - naissance’ undergraduate thesis Studio Undergraduate thesis | Fall - Spring 2017 Location Ancient City of Aizanoi, Turkey Program a pathway + series of permanent structures to better understand the fragments of the ancient city

Project Description ‘Ruin-naissance’ is the term I use to describe not only the resurrection of an archeological site, but also the rebirth of an idea about how we think about ruins and how new construction can enhance the experience of these kinds of sites.

The principle contention of this thesis is that a better understanding of the fragmented evidence presented by an archeological site can be seen through the lens of a contemporary architectural intervention that responds sensitively to an ancient site. In doing this, the intervention needs to address issues of identity, narrative and historiography. The new architecture should not ignore or in any way obscure the existence of ruins. Rather, the new architecture should treat the ruins as part of the design, where their integration is essential not only as objects or space, but also a teaching device of history.

One way this can be achieved is by introducing a defined circulation route and series of interpretive buildings that will create a new dialogue with the existing historic context and enhance the reading of the site.

The constant exchange between the old and new is further emphasized by the controlled pathway that circulates through the site.

This controlled circulation pathway will not only be a walking experience but it should also be designed to contain a narrative of the historical site. Therefore the pathway becomes an element that will manifest context’s historic past where space, event and movement all converge into a larger experience that effectively creates an open-air museum.

Shenzen Green Laboratory a renovation of a 1960s building in the low-carbon city Studio Comprehensive Design Studio | Spring 2016 Location Low-carbon City, Shenzhen, China Program botanical research garden + laboratories Partner Katherine Barymow Project Description The renovation of a 1960s building into a green laboratory and a research center is based on a simple concept that is using positive and negative spaces that distributes the program. It is a frontal building that is very porous and open at the front and gets more enclosed as it proceeds. This simple concept not only allows for a logical distribution of the program, but it also suits the needs of plant growth for research purposes.

The main objective of the comprehensive studio was to be able to lock down a good concept and later to be able to resolve the building in the construction level drawings. Therefore, the drawings for this project are the main objective of the studio, and they are resolved at the construction level details.

The Border Line an intervention to the Regents Park Estate Studio Syracuse London Design Studio | Fall 2015 Location Camden, London, UK Program an intervention to the urban context Partners Victor Abreu Collazo + Kahlil Lashley Project Description The Regents Park Estate reads as an enclosed island due to how its situation on the broader context of the City of London — and being surrounded by highways and secondary roads. The public spaces between the housing blocks in the site act as edges that separate this site from the broader context. To be able to reactivate these public spaces and connect the Regents Park Estate back to the City of London, we introduce a new mechanism of circulation. We propose a new design that manipulates the existing ground plane, making the relationship between the built environment and the open space more notable. The linear design consists of the courtyard that is now the main public gathering space, a bridge that breaks the sites alienation from the rest by connecting two sides and finally, a watchtower that drags people to the site.

The Open Fortress lake house for a birdwatcher by the Skaneateles Lake Studio Julie Larsen Design Studio | Fall 2012 Location Skaneateles Lake, Upsate New York Program private lakehouse + bird watching tower Project Description This lakehouse is designed for a unique client whose hobby is to birdwatch; however, he is scared of the heights. Therefore, the main objective of this house to be able to create a safe space for the client while still adding some height. The home sits on the natural slope of the site, and it has an open floor plan. The house is designed using a simple grid system, which aims to mimic the forest that surrounds the house. Finally, there is a watchtower that is for birdwatching. The tower has minimal openings, almost like a fortress to create a safe feeling environment.

The White Album the stage design for Joan Didion’s The White Album Office P - A - T - T - E- R - N - S, Los Angeles, CA (fabricated by Stereobot) Project Date 2018 Location The Pittsburgh International Festival of Firsts The Wexner Center for the Arts BAM’s Next Wave Festival at the Harvey Theatre CAP UCLA New York Times Publication https://www.nytimes.com/2018/11/29/theater/the-white-album-review-joan-didion-bam.html Project Description Utilizing a robotically manufactured, flexible space truss system by LA based Stereobot, the project hides its technical versatility aiming to provide an ethereal environment where a profound theatrical narrative can unfold. The rectilinear container is skewed in the sides: accounting for the depth of the structure, it contests just slightly the symmetry of itself and the theater. Taking advantage of the triangular truss that makes up the structure, a 3’ deep intrusion and extrusion on each side is incorporated to provide access, egress and the necessary room for theatrical artifices to occur inconspicuously.

Karma Sanctum an iconic oasis Office P - A - T - T - E- R - N - S, Los Angeles, CA Project Date 2017 - Ongoing Location Bali, Indonesia Program hotel + spa Project Description Standing out from the lush scenery of the island and the often-noisy street JL. Raya Uluwatu, the project aims to present visitors with an iconic oasis: a welcoming and relaxing escape and a memorable spatial and aesthetic experience. Shaped in a crystalline form and clad in black volcanic stone that contrasts gold accents in its interior, the project is distinctly contemporary in its aesthetics while insinuating local Balinese motifs.

By orienting the suites towards the exterior in the direction of the north-west views, the V-shaped mass maximizes exterior views whilst preserving a small existing temple located towards the back of the site.

This new expansion includes various amenity spaces: a bar, a lazy pool, a swim-up pool bar, and several sun terraces. This new design aims to blend with the Bali context by using natural materials and keeping the design as simple as possible.

Karma Reef masterplan for a new resort in Bali Office P - A - T - T - E- R - N - S, Los Angeles, CA Project Date

2017 - Ongoing Location Bali, Indonesia Program Private resort (villas + beach club) Project Description With 270 meters of frontage towards the sea, the new resort will be organized around a playful radial configuration with Karma Beach Club as its epicenter. Intending to capture the irreplaceable essence of this small idyllic island, the radiating organization allows for the optimization of individual views while creating a unique feeling of cohesion between distinct areas of the resort. Surrounding its center – located less than 70 meters from Gili Meno Pier – are gathering spaces including the main common activities and amenities such as the Lobby, Restaurant, Bar, shared pools and Spa with a connection towards the sea, as well as an alternated and “natural” distribution of a series of unique villas around it as well as other complementary common amenities connected through internal pathways.
