Vernacular Architecture

represent local traditions & cultural practices focused on local needs ( building's size depends on number of family members ) availability of local materials ( Chengal wood, Teak wood & Merbau wood )

This house is one of the most beautiful houses in terms of architecture. This house is so sturdy and built using high quality wood compared to other houses in the Museum. This house is bigger compared to other houses and has one extra space , 'balai' because the owner of this house is a village chief (penghulu).

Characteristics of Construction

Built on Stilts

organize in grid system create a certain height - avoid wild animals & floods (built near the Pahang river), to deter thieves, & for added air ventilation

Spatial Organization

started from Rumah Ibu, Serambi, Selang, and finally is Balai there is no kitchen / toilet in this house

Zinc Panel Roof

exposed from the colonization periods of the Portuguese, Dutch and British easy to install

Wood Joineries

overall construction method ( can be seen from stilt to roof structure ) mortise and tenon joint, tusk tenon joint, folding wedges, etc.

C O N C L U S I O N

The uniqueness of the Malay traditional house, The Rumah Serambi Pahang, is an architecture that show the creativity and craftmanship of the Malay community at that time, The building in built according to the environment, climate, culture, and practice of Islam. The elements found in the design such as building materials, structure, space and decoration reflect the life and a cultural form of the owner. Because of that all the Rumah Serambi are built differently.Hence, the Rumah Serambi Pahang is not only be seen as a form of knowledge and craftmanship, the building itself has a meaning and philosophy.
