After an especially hardy week of waves at Mavericks there is a party at Carsons house. Although a town outcast he is certainly respected in the waves and the wider big community converges on his place out of a feeling of solidarity from the heavy experiences of the weak. When Lance Stops by the shop to tell Tracy he is going, suprisingly she is up for it. She feels he is now a man amoung the men and a force in his own right who would not be lured into darkness by the immortals. She grabs he stuff to go home with him and ready up fort he fiesta. Bob takes the opportunity to have a talk with him. BOB – Hows it been out there boy? LANCE – Amazing, amazing week of waves BOB – uh huh, and you how are you holding up? LANCE – what do you mean? BOB – i mean how u feeling. You tired? You must be pretty wiped, you been charging it pretty hard. You got any fuel left to burn? LANCE – i dont get you? BOB – I mean dont go looking for energy thats not there. Dont measure yourself to a superhuman standard. Things may seem larger than life out there but at the end of the day your supposed to be afraid, there is no conquering fear, there is only accepting of it......thats all apart of being alive... Tracy comes out the back ready to go pulling Lance to the car. At Carsons, Cars parked around the block. Music blasting in a yard of rusted cars and wetsuits hanging from the hoods from clothing lines and poles. The mood is garelous a release valve for the week of pressure and pain. There is an atmosphere of brotherhood, Tracy and Lance get lost in the vibe. Everyone is drinking and talking story, throwing back shots and affirming each others vitality. Then the party melts into dancing and primal urges. Amid the darkness and celebration the immortals in this one instance blend in with the mortals. This is a place where man and demon can come together in the fuzzy twilight between life and death as tends to be the case when there is an epic dosage of surf. No one can see past the moment. Lance and Tracy are in the kitchen pooring themselves tequila. They turn around and Carson is right there. In the red glow of the party his face seems warm and he smiles at the couple. CARSON – mi casa su casa bro In lance there is an explosion of endorphins. Tracy feels it too. So much energy has been pent up trying to so hard to make it in the big waves this acknowledgement from the dark king of the big wave, this indication that he has been watching and approves overtakes them. Carson walks past to one of the bedrooms and they follow in an ecstatic trance. He who had always seemed so cold now radiated paternity.
