Well, we had to shoot the Spring Fashion Roundup in January, hence no cherry blossoms — not at retail florists, not in the wholesale flower market. To the rescue: Michaels, the chain of crafts stores. A brief visit gave us armloads of the frothy little blossoms — from China, not Japan, but definitely pink. Elsewhere in the issue, we check in with the new mobile shoe van Shoe-La-La, with FW’s Makeup Man and with the Scene Stealers at local galas. shoe lover from childhood, 51-year-old Elena Mekhova opened her mobile boutique Shoe-La-La in August, 2014, to sell made-in-Europe, affordable, quality footwear to professional women. Mekhova parks her van on the 4800 block of Massachusetts Avenue in Spring Valley and is open for business Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. We spoke to her one Sunday afternoon in February after she closed shop for the day. FW: Shoes have a special meaning for you. Why? EM: I grew up in Russia and I

never had enough shoes. The planned economy never planned a shoe for me. When there are 100 pairs of shoes, and 500 people looking, well, if you’re not there at the right time, you don’t get shoes. I became self-conscious about not having a pair of shoes or ones that fit me, and that feeling has stuck with me.

FW: So, do you have a mission? EM: There are so many shoes around

that are not good quality. My idea is to sell quality shoes that are comfortable but don’t sacrifice style. FW: Are there shoes that inspire you? EM: I had a pair of shoes that I

put flowers on. While I was working on converting the van to a boutique, getting paperwork done for licenses, etc., this pair of shoes kept me going. They are a pure joy to look at! Later, I found an image on Shutterstock that was similar, and that image became my business logo. Happy feet make happy people. FW: You have decorated your van with curtains, shelves and stools. Do you mostly stay in Spring Valley or do you move it? EM: Spring Valley is a great market for me — women from 25 to 65, who are well-traveled and have

extra money. And I live on 46th St. NW.

Spring is all about renewing your makeup arsenal. Switch out dark, vampy shades for glossy lips, angelic skin and a pop of color on the cheeks. Think your smoky eye needs to be tucked away? Think again! Brown eyeshadows are sultry and on-trend for the warmer months. Look for bronze, copper and rust-gold shades. If you want to cover all of your bases, look no further than the popular Urban Decay Cosmetics Naked palette ($54, ulta.com, local Ulta stores) which can help you achieve both a neutral and smoky brown eye. For a natural, sun-kissed glow, bronzer is a must. Apply a matte shade where the sun would hit your face: your temples, cheeks, chin and nose. Keep the application controlled and light by using a fan brush. A good option is Bobbi Brown Bronzing Powder ($40, macys.com and local Macy’s stores). Blush is back in a big way this season. Switch out your pink blush for the “it” shade of the season: Coral. Check out Mac Cosmetics Mineralize blush in Petal Power, $27, maccosmetics.com and local Mac Cosmetics stores). Get a lit-from-within glow by adding a cream highlighter into your routine. Place it above the cupid’s bow of your lips and on top of your cheekbones — it can even be used as eyeshadow. FW: What styles and size range? EM: At any one time, I carry about 15 different styles of flats, pumps and sandals with various heel

heights in sizes 5-11, all mediums. I don’t focus as much on trends as on comfort. If a woman wears the right pair of shoes for her, her posture is different and so is her attitude. If I don’t have a customer’s size in my van, I’ll get it and deliver it to her doorstep for free. FW: Why do you operate only on weekends? EM: I have a full-time job, but I wanted to give this business a try. I’m planning what to do when I

retire, and if this works out ... Through word of mouth and advertising, the business is growing. Most of my customers walk out with two pairs of shoes.

FW: In addition to a lot of hard work, what do you think has helped make you successful? EM: Passion for what I do. Marilyn Monroe supposedly said: “Give a girl the right shoes and she

can conquer the world.” I would change that to give a girl the right shoes and she can conquer the boardroom, the ballroom or any room. janet kelly

Choosing the Right Plastic Surgeon

P

lastic surgery can improve relationships and careers. It can reimagine entire lives, but is not without its risks. Choose the wrong surgeon, and you can suffer consequences ranging from dissatisfaction to irreparable damage. So how do you choose the right surgeon? How do you know? Below, Austin-Weston plastic surgeons in Reston, Va., weigh in:

Q: Is board certification important? Dr. Christopher Knotts: Absolutely!

But you want to be sure your surgeon is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Right now someone with no medical education can start their own board and start certifying people. To the lay person the name sounds authentic but means nothing in the medical community. If a board isn’t recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties, it has no validity. Legitimate board certification tells you your surgeon graduated from an accredited medical school, completed an accredited residency, and fulfilled the rigorous certification requirements. That’s a great place to start looking for a plastic surgeon.

Q: But how can I judge my doctor’s skill? Dr. Byron Poindexter: This is one

of the toughest things for patients to research. It is very easy these days to make oneself sound qualified on the internet. There are businesses that sell accolades like, ‘selected Americas Greatest Cosmetic Practitioner.’ I have often thought about getting one of those

plaques for my dog. The vast majority of our patients come from referrals. If you don’t have a friend who can share their wonderful experience with you, then the next best option is to interview physicians. Spend time looking at their credentials and before and after results. And make sure the results they are showing you are their actual patients. Q: What if my plastic surgeon doesn’t specialize in cosmetic surgery? Dr. George Weston: Plastic surgeons

who specialize in cosmetic surgery are definitely your best choice. Only about 10 percent of board-certified plastic surgeons perform cosmetic surgery exclusively. The other 90 percent do either reconstructive plastic surgery like breast reconstructions after mastectomies or cleft lips, or a mix of cosmetic and reconstructive surgery. For example, according to statistics from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, Austin-Weston surgeons do almost four times as many cosmetic surgery procedures as our peers. If your surgeon does mostly reconstructive

surgery, you might not want them to do your face lift. You want a specialist in cosmetic surgery. Q: Do advances in technology reduce the importance of experience? Dr. Robert Sigal: Technology by

itself is never a substitute for experience. Experience allows you to critically evaluate new technologies. It gives technology a context, and then we use what works and discard what doesn’t. A surgical outcome can only be as good

as the thought process behind it, and that takes years to refine. Sometimes, the answer is the ‘tried and true’ and sometimes it’s the ‘flashy and new.’ The four surgeons at Austin-Weston have 60 years of combined experience, and each of us has seen just about everything there is to see, and tried about everything there is to try.
