4 MAKEUP MAN Carl Ray explains how to perfect your daily pout.

from the editor All that glisters is not gold, the Bard wrote. To which we respond, You’re right! There are also diamonds and rubies. And don’t forget pearls — although I guess they glow rather than “glister. And while, during this dark winter month, we weren’t festooning our model, Christele, with jewels, we had time to get some beauty and skincare advice from Carl Ray, FW’s Makeup Man, and to check in with cosmetics princess Aerin Lauder. (I still say she looks like a kid!) This publication was produced by The Washington Post Custom Content department in partnership with a Web site for Washington women, and did not involve the news and editorial departments of The Washington Post. SPARKLE PLENTY The glitter of diamonds, the glow of gold — just what’s needed to replace all those holiday lights in the depths of winter. Have a look.

The Perfect Pout Red lips never go out of style, they are a classic. Reds come in a variety of textures and forms, from balms and stains to glosses, creams and mattes. Red is the color of passion and love — and it’s super sexy! The trick for red lips is to find shades that look beautiful against your skin and to put in a little prep work to make your pucker pop. Every three to four days, exfoliate your lips to eliminate any dead skin that has built up. Taking this step also allows a smooth surface for the application of matte lipstick shades. Create your own scrub with a mix of honey, sugar and petroleum jelly. (Vaseline Lip Therapy Original, $1.87, area Target stores and target.com) In addition to exfoliating, conditioning the lips is key to preparing for the application of color. Be sure to remove any excess lip balm prior to applying lipstick for longevity. Once your lips are properly prepped, pick a color that best suits your skin tone. Fair skin tones with pink undertones look best with cherrytoned reds, like MAC Cosmetics’ Ruby Woo, $16, area MAC Cosmetics and maccosmetics.com. For medium complexions, seek out orange-red shades, like Nars cosmetics’ Red Lizard, $26, area Sephora stores and sephora.com. Darker complexions look great with raspberry shades. Try Benefit Cosmetics’ Benetint, $30, area Sephora stores and sephora.com. If you want precise coverage, use a lip brush to fill in your lips. After filling in your lips, clean off the brush (for instance Chanel Pinceau Lèvres Rétractable, $35, area Macy’s and macys.com) and dip it into concealer and gently trace it around your lip line for the perfect, bold lip. Find more tips from Carl Ray by visiting carlraymakeupartist.com and following him on Instagram @carlraymakeupartist.

Make your own lip scrub by mixing honey, sugar and Vaseline!

Checking In

The Lauder Lifestyle Brand

A

erin Lauder, granddaughter of the iconic Estee Lauder (yes, there really was an Estee Lauder!), has become a lifestyle brand in her own right. She has her own line of makeup and fragrance, sold by the main Estee Lauder company, and she has her own company, Aerin LLC, which sells her furniture and home-decor items. We chatted with Aerin at a Saturday beauty event at Nordstrom Tysons Corner Center. FW: You look like a kid!

AL: I’m 44.

FW: You seem to have very little makeup on for a woman with her own makeup line. AL: I like to look comfortable, with a natural palette.

It’s why we have a “Weekday” palette [of eyeshadow, blush and lipstick] and a “Weekend” palette, you know, for when a woman wants something a little lighter. FW: Our columnist, the makeup artist Carl Ray, is the man behind Michelle Obama’s flawless look. He has said that you can emphasize the eye or the lip, but not both. AL: That’s right [nodding], that’s the modern face.

FW: The Aerin brand goes beyond makeup, to furniture and decorative accessories. But the lifestyle-brand field is a crowded one.

AL: Well, we’re all different. [California interior

FW: By heritage you mean your family’s story? AL: Yes, heritage and story-telling

enter into the marketing of our furniture. We have a “Joseph” chair named after my grandfather, who was always sitting in a club chair. So that kind of heritage. [The Aerin website calls Joseph “one dangerously welcoming chair.” Hear, hear! It starts at $4,400, depending on fabric.] FW: What was it like growing up in a beauty juggernaut? Was it beauty all the time? AL: [Lauder smiles.] It was beauty all the time. As

little girls we [with her sister, Jane] watched our mother and grandmother put on makeup. We learned the importance of a skincare ritual. My grandmother always used to say, You have only one face, so take care of it. And it’s true: Your makeup won’t

look good if the skin underneath it doesn’t look good. FW: What is your connection to Washington? AL: My father [Ronald Lauder] was deputy assistant

secretary of defense under President Reagan. So I lived in Washington for two years, 1984 to 1986. I went to Holton-Arms [the girls prep school in Bethesda]. I used to love to go to stores in Adams Morgan and Georgetown, places like Commander Salamander [the late home of wild, youthful clothing]. FW: I confess I’ve been puzzled by some of your Instagram photos. Why do you keep photographing your feet? AL: I don’t do it a lot ... a couple of times ... well, maybe

five. It’s fun. Shoes, bags are the fun part. NANCY McKEON

If you have a dramatic smoky eye, you should have a neutral lip. If you want a bolder lip, then you should have a simple lined eye. If you have both ... you’re wearing too much makeup.

designer] Kelly Wearstler has her look, and others have theirs. We felt there was room for a lifestyle brand based on storytelling and heritage.
