‘Fashion Matters’ explores these familiar concepts with an innovative twist, through the futuristic lens of the creative learners of School of Fashion, Pearl Academy. This medley of creative expressions reflects the social milieu, changing lifestyles and perceptions, binary identities, diverse personalities, individual and gendered expressions in a transformative ecosystem. This evocative tapestry of youthful expression gives a glimpse into a tomorrow, they seek to craft. For us at Pearl, fashion is empathy, form, creativity, liberation, self and community. It’s-all-embracing.

Therefore, ‘Fashion Matters,’ is not just a metaphysical journey of changing human aspirations and expressions.

Rather, it’s a journey within.

“This collection “ORPHIC” drawing inspiration from “Resurrection” and it’s metaphoric symbolism from folklores and personal perceptions, re-animates things we once held close. Making the narratives tangible through metaphoric symbol of Moths and Tagore Manuscripts. The collection re-purposes various post consumer wastes into tactile Handloom tectiles like Khesh cotton, Tapestry weave and crochet. The textile, visual treatmments and the silhouettes derived from Tagore manuscripts and moth’s attributes are designed in a manner so as to increase the versatility and longetivity of the garment whith functionality. Making it a trans-seasonal, Androgynous ”collection with multi-sharing options.

Woke Styling “In difficult times, fashion is always outrageous.” - Elsa Schiaparelli Outrageous, a word that is responsible for giving us the most iconic moments in fashion. Fashion has always been the cradle of change. In the light of every social, political and economic change the world has ever seen, fashion has transformed.

This transformation has been beautiful and revolutionary. These moments are not just visually extraordinary but also symbolic of the change the world was waiting for. Change is constant and fashion has the power to change.With this approach, the International Lab module spoke about being woke. Woke stands for being aware and responsive to social and political injustice.

At Pearl Academy, we always feel that education is synonymous to change. Ms. Jennifer Anyan, Associate Professor of The Art of Fashion from Solent University, discussed with students the power of fashion to change. Change contributes to the evolution and is an ongoing process. She inspired the students to research, observe, feel, think, explore and experiment with intuition. These techniques played a significant role in helping students discover their vision. They were motivated and discussed multiple ideas on the way they see the world. As stylists and image-makers, our work can be powerful and strong visuals can send out strong messages. Every student started looking within to find answers to questions that matter. One of the most important question asked was – What makes you angry? Students started opening up and it was brilliant to see them share their thoughts in a very honest way.

The concepts slowly started taking shape and were expressed through strong visuals.

Students were divided into groups and each group picked up a concept that they felt passionate about. The concept notes were communicating strong opinions on social and political subjects like racism, corruption, sustainability, women empowerment, stereotypes, self – expression, LGBTQ, religious discrimination, democracy, social media, and lost traditions. Their mood and style boards were beautifully expressing their stories and aesthetics.

Students used the power of social media and each group created an Instagram account to share these stories with impactful images and videos. Each image was narrating the story in their signature style. One of the most exciting and engaging aspects of the project was self-portraits. As a stylist, it is very important to understand our style and the values that we stand for. Students created self-portraits, each expressing the values their group was representing. The entire styling collective is a reflection of their passion to create and express change through fashion. Fashion has immense power to change the way we see and perceive. We sincerely thank Professor Jennifer Anyan from Solent University for creating such an inspiring and amazing learning experience for our students. This project has helped them realize and express their social consciousness through fashion.

Amalgamating the concepts of Post Colonial Indian Army and the Ancient Indian drapes together. The Garment Silhouettes are Conceptualised by combining structured garments from Indian Army and drapes from Ancient India.

The concept revolves around how music and lights ( in specific to concerts) has its effects on our emotions. The ‘feeling’ you get at a concert, the vibe that you endure or just the FEELS when the beat is just right and the lights hits you direct , that feeling, that exact feeling of you standing there amongst that crowd when you experience gravitation of your soul, when you feel goosebumps, when you look around and its just you, you and the music, that “out of the world” vibes, the illumination of visuals in your mind, body and soul is what it’s all about.AN imagery series of an artistic expressions creating a mood of the emotional aspect of lights & music at a concert through various gifs/video clips as such, to showcase the experience of concert combo as a whole.

“I translated Punjabi Hip-Hop music into fashion with the kind of music I listen to and mixed it with the artist Rothko’s philosophy. So, I took a big chart paper size sheet, listened to music and danced on it with colors on my feet and it came out to be my artwork. As Punjabi music is always full of beats and full of life, my clothes will be exaggerated and oversized. ”

there is some similar connection between my dad’s life and The Sainte Chapelle. The appearance of the chapel is luxurious and for me wealth and riches aren’t money or a big house or expensive gifts, it is a regal life with precious lessons given to me by my dad. I am allowed to follow my passion and fail and start again to fulfil my dreams. The reason for selecting this inspiration is that I can correlate the two truly inspiring and life-changing things to create my final collection”
