welcome to the university of northampton By its very nature, fashion is about creating new possibilities, about questioning the status quo and about engendering meaningful change. It is no surprise that as we settle into our new Waterside Campus we have established new ways of interacting and working. While extending our well established Changemaker values, staff and students are working synergistically toward common aspirations that are based on fluid understandings of the ways in which knowledge can be both unlocked and exceeded through condensed alliances and mutual respect.

This is derived from an innovative pedagogic approach which values, celebrates and encourages the untested, while assimilating both industry and sector standards. Through the adoption of this approach our learners work in concert with lecturers to reach across recognised design expectations in order to exploit our geographic heritage while maintaining our sustained contemporary edge.

Geographically Northampton boasts a proud and prosperous heritage in leather and footwear with a unique cluster of internationally renowned footwear brands. Over many centuries artisans and designers

have perfected their skills, processes and materials establishing Northamptonshire as a recognised world centre for gentleman’s shoes of the very highest quality. The building of our new on-site tannery and specialist fashion, footwear and textile workshops helps to support and preserve this status for future generations of foremost world designers and makers. The unique opportunities that this heirloom knowledge extends to our fashion, textiles, footwear and fashion promotion students enables them to contribute consequential transformative innovation to the global fashion industry from ‘hide to high street’ in such a way that no other UK graduates can.

Past graduates are working in roles from PR and promotion, through to bespoke high end design with brands such as ASOS, Church’s, Grensons, Topshop, Harvey Nichols, Shwartzkopf , Ted Baker, New Look, Joules, Roland Mouret, Dr Martens and Cheaney.

institute for creative leather technologies (iclt) The ICLT is a world -leading, unique education and research centre, attracting students and researchers from around the globe. With new facilities opening September 2019 on the Universities brand new Waterside Campus situated in the heart of the town, ICLT is the place to study leather!

Today’s leather industry is a global business with links from the farm to many of the worlds top brands. Think Aston Martin, Virgin Atlantic, Clarkes shoes, Nike and Burberry and you have just a feel for the sectors and customers for leather with whom you are likely to be working.

The need for new recruits into the industry, from production through to supply, has never been higher. Both our Undergraduate and Postgraduate courses will take place on a theoretical basis enhanced by hands on practical work in both our tannery and laboratories giving you the opportunity to both make and test your own leather.

1. Commit to your studies You’ll need to complete your HND or achieve a 2:2 or above degree classification so it’s really important that you focus on your course.

You’ll also need to complete one of our flagship awards: Changemaker Gold or Employability Plus Gold These awards involve getting to know yourself, identifying and working on your strengths and gaining practical experience so that when it comes to graduating you’re in a great position to start your career.

3. Keep in touch with us As alumni of the university we’re here for you wherever your career or future study takes you.

Bryony graduates into a life of fashion and beauty Bryony Rodda has landed a fashion role as a Trainee Buyer for Fashion Accessories and Footwear at leading beauty and fashion brand AVON. Bryony said “ My new role is a perfect mix of business and design” “I started my job soon after completing my degree, I work with suppliers on a daily bases to approve colour and fabric swatches, I also work closely with our quality team to technically review all products and to ensure all of our fashion and beauty orders go out on time”

Hannah graduates into a dream design role Fashion graduate Hannah Guiver has launched into the fashion industry as a freelance children’s wear print designer.

“For me the most exciting part of my job is designing prints that are seen in fashion stores.

An average day consists of me receiving a design brief and designing prints that are suitable for that particular client or brand.”

“The facilities at Northampton are amazing, the print room had everything that I needed to develop my skills in textile design. The Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop sessions were great too and were really important for me; without those classes I wouldn’t be able to do the job I do now.”

“The support that fashion lecturers and tutors offer at Northampton is amazing. There is always someone in the department who can help, they will always find the time to help and support you.”
