Complementary Color Pair Saturation Scales The Complement of a saurated color is found by stimulating an after- image. The afterimage is the mixed using paint. Using only the original color and the color mixed from the optical after-image, a scale of visually even steps is made by using admixtures of the 2 original colors. A neutral color made by mixing the two origimal colors is painted as a Stripe thet overlaps the entire scale. This demonstrates a principle od complimentary simultaneous color contrast.

The Complementary saturation scales are useful for introducing ways to integrate design and color. Color can help to structure design through a wide range of contrasts.

Color Wheel:

Color wheel:

This exercise demonstrates a way to organize colors on a chart in order to see relationships between the colors. It is a simple graphic design that shows: complementary pairs, secondary and, tertiary colors.

Process - a primary color is identi ed and mixed. By staring at the color steadily for 30 seconds or more and then removing the color from the visual eld but continuing to stare at the space left blank by the removed color, The complementary color is seen as afterimage. The optically produced color is then mixed using paint. Each primary color and. It's a compliment are mixed this way. These complementary colors arecalled, “secondary colors”Transitional colors on the wheel are mixed, using admixtures of secondary and analogous colors. Other transitional colors are mixed in a way consistent with this method.

This exercise develops color sensitivity, the ability to visualize and then mix colors, and an overall understanding of how colors of the spectrum relate to each other.

Simultaneous Contrast Studies-

How color context can change the perception of colors - Here 3 colors look like 4

Exploring color harmonies and composition by doing master studies.

Developing color pallets by observation from natural scenes. Using knowledge of color contrast and mixing to augment and balance observed color in composition.

The Jitterbug: Tile design and systemic movement. Introduction to symmetry types and tesselation.

Further Explorations of Symmetries:

Using other means to produce patterns- In this case by using mirror corners.

Designing surfaces with virtual and actual components.
