UNLOCKING THE POWER OF LUXEMBOURG

«Space resources pioneer», «dynamic Fintech ecosystem», «startup nation», «sustainable finance leader», «digital fortress» … So many new expressions have been coined lately to describe the Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg. Located at the very heart of Europe – which it helped build, notably through Robert Schuman in the 1950s – the country keeps on reinventing itself to reinforce its position on the global map. As highlighted by Prime Minister Xavier Bettel at ICT Spring, «Luxembourg is a country where ideas grow and where people all work together».

At Farvest, and notably through ICT Spring and BEAST Magazine which have both been around for some years now, we also aim at promoting our great – yet geographically small – country, highlight the local expertise, share best practices and enable the international development of innovative companies. In this special edition released right before National Day, or should I say «Lëtzebuerger Nationalfeierdag», we start by addressing the topics of Innovation, Fintech and Startups, all intermingling and meeting great success in Luxembourg thanks to multiple initiatives backed by the government, private-public partnerships or concepts emerging from creative minds.

Then, the entertainment and art sections focus on the organization of b2b events, with new locations now available – and therefore new opportunities – for companies to surprise their clients, employees and partners with unprecedented and unique experiences. In the current environment, such events remain key to attract talents but also to cherish partnerships and business relationships. Art, just like any other industries, is adapting to the digital world and Luxembourg might very well be at the center of the new art scene with several artists showcasing their amazing concepts, mixing virtual reality and artificial intelligence.

Luxembourg is also home of the Space Forum, a place – on Earth – where local and international experts meet and exchange around the latest trends, from the advent of 5G and the use of Space Data, to the impacts on the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals.

The recent launch of the Luxembourg Space Agency (LSA) shows once more how ambitious the Grand-Duchy is when it comes to outer space activities.

These developments are only possible thanks to new and emerging tech – all still controlled by Humans – which are also bringing the world more equal opportunities, notably serving the unbanked through mobile financial services. Yet, several challenges need to be addressed, especially the constant and growing cybersecurity threats. The good news is that the country of Luxembourg has been working on such topics for years, to, today, be recognized as a front runner and a force to be reckon with in these specific fields.

BUILDING AN ENTREPRENEURSHIP-FRIENDLY ENVIRONMENT

The country of Luxembourg is known for its steel industry, financial services and more recently for its ICT expertise.

To further allow the development of these industries among others, the Grand-Duchy has been favoring innovation and entrepreneurship through several initiatives for several years, one of which being the House of Entrepreneurship. Founded in October 2016, the House of Entrepreneurship was launched on the initiative of the Chamber of Commerce and the Ministry of the Economy and aims at helping entrepreneurs in their entire journey.

We met with its CEO and Director Entrepreneurship of the Chamber of Commerce, Tom Baumert, to discuss some of the main projects led by the House of Entrepreneurship and how it answers to the challenges currently faced by entrepreneurs in Luxembourg, and in the Greater Region.

The House of Entrepreneurship can be labelled as a platform, or «one-stop shop», bringing together all the parties involved in the creation of a new company.

«We also benefit from the support of the Ministry of the Economy, and our main mission is to federate the actors and people involved in the process of creating and developing businesses. Back in the days, different entities were located all around the country. Now, the House of Entrepreneurship is a unique point of contact located in the capital of Luxembourg» highlights Tom Baumert, explaining that all necessary information is now available at the House of Entrepreneurship. He continues: «it brings more coherence and also consistence to entrepreneurs: through our organization, they can also have an easy access to information and can easily figure out who their appropriate contact for specific tasks is».

Since its creation, the House of Entrepreneurship has been a great success as it has been in contact with more than 80,000 clients, sharing information with them but also promoting Luxembourg as an entrepreneurship hub, with more and more players participating and allowing the enhancement of the program.

«A similar initiative called ‘Espace Entreprise’, existed back in 2015 at the Chamber of Commerce. Since launching in late 2016, we have seen a rise of 281% in the number of clients contacting us, showing how successful the House of Entrepreneurship is.

Our goal is also to bring more partners on board, from administrations to private-public partners, etc.,» underlines the CEO. A one-stop shop to allow entrepreneurs to grow and develop The House of Entrepreneurship first focused on the administrative procedures, which can sometimes be a burden, even if Luxembourg has been smoothing it over the years. As explained by Tom Baumert, «this section of the House of Entrepreneurship is still popular, with many questions being asked to – and answered by – our experts. Yet, our focus grew and we are now also helping companies that are already established on Luxembourgish soil. They often come up with interrogations and our job is to point them in the right direction and tell them which partner(s) will be able to accompany them, depending on the challenge they are facing».

Moreover, in a context of digital transformation, the Chamber of Commerce and the House of Entrepreneurship have also launched an initiative called «Go Digital», which aims at helping SMEs tackle the current challenges and embrace today’s digital world.

However, this is not the only initiative the Chamber of Commerce and the House of Entrepreneurship have launched to support already established entrepreneurs in Luxembourg: «Several other aspects are also being covered by our different initiatives, namely facilitating business transfers/successions, helping entrepreneurs who are facing difficulties, sharing best practices through a mentoring program, … In other words, we are bridging the gap between the different players of the innovation/entrepreneurship ecosystem: we are creating synergies,» highlights the CEO.

Through a partnership with nyuko, the people visiting the House of Entrepreneurship can also benefit from additional expertise before creating the company and committing to all the upcoming entrepreneurial responsibilities, focusing on concepts, ideas and business models. «Through all the services that are now available, our main mission remains to facilitate the life of entrepreneurs in their entire journey,» comments Tom Baumert.

Promoting entrepreneurship in the Grand-Duchy For almost three years, the House of Entrepreneurship and the Chamber of Commerce have also been promoting the entrepreneurial spirit and the creation of companies in high schools but also in collaboration with the University of Luxembourg: «we are seeing the development of multiple initiatives dedicated to students. For instance, we are involved in the ‘Entrepreneurial Schools’ project encouraging initiative and entrepreneurship, unveiling students’ talents and challenging their creativity and originality. As a matter of fact, four high schools have already added an entrepreneurship program in their curriculum.

The House of Entrepreneurship also works hand in hand with the JEL, Jonk Entrepeneuren Luxembourg,» adds the CEO of the House of Entrepreneurship. The asbl, which organizes 11 different programs and inspired over 11.000 students in 2018, is Luxembourg’s main independent entrepreneurial education organization and is currently located at the Chamber of Commerce’s House of Entrepreneurship.

Finally, Tom Baumert adds that the House of Entrepreneurship and the Chamber of Commerce support entrepreneurial education itself through an initiative called «Relation Ecole-Entreprise” (schoolcompany relationship) to promote entrepreneurship through different workshops and encourage youngsters from 15 to 19 years to consider the entrepreneurial pathway as an option in their upcoming professional life.

The House of Entrepreneurship is also one of the only players which organizes workshops and company visits for teachers in order to highlight the main economic business sectors in Luxembourg and to encourage students, through their teachers input, to work in these sectors which show great potential for the future sustainable development of the national economy.

«Moreover, I’d like to highlight the fact that the word ‘entrepreneur’, which does not even exist in Luxembourgish, really means ‘creating a company’.

In this respect, it is crucial to explain it to the local population and tell them that they can pursue such a career. Promoting entrepreneurship is also one of the key messages we would like to spread!» explains Mr. Baumert.

When it comes to training, several workshops are organized by and in the House of Entrepreneurship, dealing with specific business topics but also with digital and its impact on companies. As explained by the CEO, «through the Go Digital sessions, we are notably explaining to SMEs how to leverage social media to promote their activities with practical cases and concrete examples. In the first 6 months of 2019, we have welcomed more than 2,200 professionals in more than 160 workshops in this program. Moreover, the House of Entrepreneurship organizes the Entrepreneurs’ Days, a series of workshops throughout the year.

The spring session of the Entrepreneurs’ Days focusses on the culture of failure – how to deal with it, bounce back and use it to succeed in the future. Therefore, a “Fuckup Night” session has been organized in late May. It spreads the innovative startup mentality».

According to the CEO of the House of Entrepreneurship, «Luxembourg is also very attractive for foreign companies, especially when the entrepreneurs are located in the Greater Region. They all know the main advantages of the country: a great testbed for the European market, a wealthy population, ease of administrative registration, good infrastructure, a safe political environment, etc.

The country has a true great potential for companies, from SMEs to international groups,» explains Tom Baumert. To conclude, he lists the multicultural and multilingual workforce and the fact that entrepreneurs can approach authorities very quickly – from the Chamber of Commerce to the different Ministries – as some of the country’s main advantages when it comes to entrepreneurship.

MEETING THE CHALLENGES OF THE MODERN ECONOMY THROUGH INNOVATION

After announcing the acquisition of Luxembourgish startup Docunify IP Company, Edith Magyarics, CEO Victor Buck Services, met with the BEAST team to discuss the global strategy of her company, from the need to always serve the client and answer their needs, to the importance of collaboration with local and international partners, in order to further develop the Luxembourgish tech and innovation ecosystem.

In view of the rise of sophisticated cyberattacks, the conversation started with Edith Magyarics highlighting the growing need to secure documents and data in a context of digital transformation. « Given the risk of dispersion of vital data, Victor Buck Services, the international service provider, equips its customers with secure solutions thanks to its expertise across the entire information value chain,» she added. From information collection to its transformation and distribution to the proper recipient or workflow, Victor Bucks Services provides a wide range of print and digital solutions enabling its clients to engage with any party or leverage exchanges within their organizations. «We want to be at the forefront of our clients’ challenges and that is why we strive at supporting them in improving their efficiency and tackle their security challenges», explains the CEO of the company located in Capellen.

According to her, it is crucial for Victor Buck Services and for any company evolving in the digital sphere to stay up-to-date regarding the latest trends, but also to get their processes certified. For instance, Victor Buck Services was the second company to comply with the PSDC regulation in Luxembourg back in 2017.

Data protection and customer centricity at the center of digital transformation «People see digital transformation as a challenge. But if you look at all the industries and at all the emerging technologies, we notice that the real challenge for companies – and clients – is actually the protection of data. For instance, last year in Singapore, a cyberattack on the government’s health database caused the loss of 1,5 million sensitive data. Moreover, the total prejudice related to cyberattacks amounted to almost 150 billion euros globally in 2017,» stated the CEO. Therefore, whether we are talking about AI, chatbots, robotics or RPA, the main challenges for companies clearly remain data protection and necessarily cybersecurity. Moreover, with customers across the globe, from the United States to Australia, the services provided by Victor Bucks Services, need to be available 24/7. As explained by the CEO, «the concept of customer centricity is key nowadays. In this perspective, the very sensitive data we manufacture, enrich, distribute for our clients require us to maintain a high level of trust and protection around any of our processes. Our main focus in this space is to offer a secure infrastructure to store our clients’ data, work on certifications to guaranty the security of the whole information lifecycle (PSDC-DC, ISO 27001 which has been entertained and we are awaiting for the final decision of the certifying entity) and have regular audits and pentests.

Cooperation, the key to success In May, Victor Buck Services announced the acquisition of Docunify IP Company, a startup based in Luxembourg that won the FEDIL Innovation prize last year. It is an «Admintech» and aims at creating collaborative experiences enabling users from various locations to simultaneously edit, finalize and sign documents. «With the recent acquisition of Docunify IP Company, we are consistent in our approach towards innovation. From digitization to e-archiving, Docunify is completing the puzzle,» underlines Edith Magyarics.

When discussing innovation, the CEO advocates collaboration, and wants all participants to exchange, discuss and share, in order for the entire ecosystem to grow. «We know we cannot exist alone and strongly believe that we need to partner with others, from all industries, get support from external parties, look if something already exists that could fit our value chain instead of re-inventing the wheels. We invest time in various organizations to share ideas, we value the expertise others have, work on sharing ideas: we are part of a whole and each has a role to play!»

In terms of business and interoperability, the SaaS solutions developed by Docunify enables clients to create, review, sign and share documents in a secure digital collaboration platform. It offers flexibility and security allowing the clients of Victor Buck Services to collaborate with both internal and external third parties with a high level of trust without imposing too heavy constraints to users. On the other hand, the Docunify clients also immediately benefit from the knowledge and expertise of Victor Buck Services, which notably guarantees a strong security aspect through its PSF status and other certifications. «They also benefit from our product management and business development to enrich their experience with new features. Also, the existing Docunify clients will build on the international presence of Victor Buck Services, its 24/7 service, around the world and additional solutions to their document/ information management,» said Edith Magyarics.

Therefore, by acquiring Docunify IP Company and partnering with innovative players, Victor Buck Services is pursuing its purpose: to offer customers a variety of solutions to meet the challenges of the modern economy through innovation.

A growing innovation ecosystem in Luxembourg As explained by Edith Magyarics, the country of Luxembourg may be small, but it is fostering a considerable amount of innovation, through its dynamic startups ecosystem, notably. «Luxembourg is also multicultural and multilingual. Many companies here are serving and supporting clients across the globe and have developed a specific expertise, especially in the fields of ICT, financial services obviously, but also logistics, etc», added the CEO of Victor Buck Services. According to her, there is an incredible spirit in the country, backed by several government initiatives in the space, energy, and ICT sectors, all including eco-responsible aspects.

There is a clear and strong willingness to move and act.

For instance, in the field of cybersecurity, according to the international union of telecommunications, Luxembourg is ranked 11th among 175 countries in terms of engagement for cybersecurity source.

«Our strategy is clear: we want to expand our international presence to support existing or new clients, but also expand on the type of businesses we serve. Finally, our goal is to implement new ideas and solutions. At Victor Buck Services, we like to say ‘share your dreams, we may deliver a piece of it or help you find all the pieces to make the puzzle complete’,» concluded Edith Magyarics.

A NEW BREED OF FINTECH GROWTH LAB

Pascal Bouvier, Fintech pioneer and Managing Partner at MiddleGame Ventures, tells us more about the NadiFin Acceleration Program which was created earlier this year in collaboration with Farvest.

Why NadiFin? Where does the name come from?

«Nadi» is sanskrit for «flow, channel, or stream».

We thought this was appropriate for the enabling benefits of new technology in financial services.

Adding “fin” created a unique name for a Fintech growth lab that accurately describes our program.

Why run an accelerator program as a venture capital company?

The three of us (Pascal Bouvier, Michael Meyer and Patrick Pinschmidt) are focused on finding the best early-stage start-ups in Europe and North America. We believe that we bring a differentiated mix of operational, regulatory and technology experience to the financial services sector. We are lead investors and take an active role in helping our portfolio companies grow and scale their operations.

We at MGV have been involved with accelerators for years, and financial services is a very difficult ecosystem for early stage companies to navigate.

We have seen what works and what doesn’t, including failures to connect with incumbents and with experienced investors. Therefore, we created a unique program that combines a growthoriented curriculum with the facilitation of real world venture capitalists. The combination creates a better problem statement, a better cohort, and a better program for the ecosystem.

Everything we do is directly tied to the challenges that entrepreneurs face in scaling their business and providing the product solutions incumbents seek.

Why did you choose the cities of Luxembourg and Dublin?

We believe that these vibrant, smaller markets are the perfect balance of EU regulation, high quality talent, and lower operating costs. The countries both actively support Fintech and want to create the best places to launch for continental growth. We find that the larger cities in Europe can be insular and may not always be accommodating to startups. For a startup seeking to grow and to expand across Europe (and eventually the US with our assistance), Luxembourg and Dublin are ideal launch pads. We’ve spent a good amount of time in Luxembourg and Ireland over the past year, and see two ecosystems that mirror many of our key investment themes.

What is special about NadiFin? Why is it different from any other Fintech accelerator programs?

As noted above, a VC-led acceleration program is new and unique. For incumbents and the ecosystem, NadiFin focuses on more later-stage companies (post Seed to Series B) than one generally finds in an incubator or accelerator. Series A startups, NadiFin’s target, will typically have a working product/service, at least one reference customer, and a proven product-market fit. This level of maturity opens up the opportunity for testing with major incumbents, something that a very early stage firm could never do. Therefore, the program is highly attractive to both mature startups and a broader incumbent ecosystem (including peer VCs whom we welcome). Our long-term goal is to create a best in class program that features the 10-12 leading Series A Fintech firms in Europe. We believe our success with this cohort is a great harbinger for the future. We think we have several potential world-class financial services innovators in the program that will make a name for themselves over the next decade and beyond.

What were your main drivers to select the cohort?

We typically build a problem statement that is topical for MGV and for incumbents. «FinData», Regulatory & Compliance, or «decentralized finance» are a high level examples of themes that we have used to build the actual problem statement in collaboration with our partners.

What will the selected startups take away from this program?

Each team has the opportunity to meet with over 100 mentors, customers and investors during the program which will dramatically expand their networks and understanding of how incumbents and investors view their solution. Additionally, spending nearly 100 hours working directly with a VC provides a far deeper and richer feedback loop than the standard initial interaction with a VC (startup pitch to VC, VC says yes or no to additional dialogue).

Most startups are not able to get detailed feedback about their pitches, their value proposition, or their target markets.

Is it a one-year program or will it be renewed and if so, when and where?

NadiFin will be a long term endeavor assuming the ecosystem values the program. At a minimum, we will offer NadiFin once a year, and may expand depending upon market interest.

What are your views on the future of Fintech?

We are in the early stages of a complete re-architecting of financial services. Most incumbents continue to operate with people, paper and places.

As digital technologies unfold, products, services and business models will be recreated to take advantage of end-to-end digital processes (all centered around data). The first Fintech wave attacked the front -end (digital wallets, p2p marketplaces, remittances, mobile/digital challenger banks etc). The next wave is happening now, Ai/ML & distributed ledger systems attacking the middle layers of financial services (business process automation, digital identities, tokenized assets etc).

MGV partners have invested approximately $300 mm in nearly 30 financial services firms. Gene Murphy, who’s based in Dublin, and Erica Leclercq, our Head of Operations and Strategy, made sure this first edition met with great success. Erica keeps on pushing us, at Farvest, to develop such initiatives. When it comes to NadiFin, we are targeting several capital cities in Europe to further develop the project, but Luxembourg will stay at the heart of the acceleration program, in partnership with the LHoFT».

Why support PYSU and how did you choose your big winner? What were the main selection criteria and the startup’s key differentiators?

Pierre-Olivier Rotheval: It seemed natural to sponsor the award for the best Luxembourg-based startup. Pitch Your Startup is a unique event that gives a tremendous exposure to participating companies and attracts decisionmakers from well beyond our borders. We couldn’t miss this opportunity to promote our local ecosystem.

The jury focused on two main dimensions: the overall quality of the project and the quality of the pitch. We were amazed by this year’s participants. I would like to thank them again as well as our wonderful jury members: Elodie Trojanowski from Luxfactory, Claire Crugnola from Lorntech, Olivier Zephir from Technoport, Martin Guerin from Luxembourg City Incubator, Bertrand Manhe from Genii Capital and Sébastien Wiertz from Paul Wurth InCub. Why did you take part in Pitch Your Startup this year?

Could you tell us a few words about your overall experience?

Kevin Muller: Pitch Your Startup is probably the most famous pitching event organized in Luxembourg.

There are startups coming from literally everywhere to participate and the cash prize is very attractive and interesting. For a startup, preparing a pitch contest takes a substantial amount of time which is not invested in the actual project development, so it is important to make it count and choose the right events.

On May 21st, Passbolt was awarded the «Luxembourgbased startup» prize during the 2019 edition of Pitch Your Startup (PYSU), an event supported by the Banque Internationale à Luxembourg (BIL).

Following their participation, we discussed the local startup ecosystem with Pierre-Olivier Rotheval (Head of Marketing & Innovation, BIL) and Kevin Muller (Co-founder & CEO, Passbolt), as well as the ambitions of both companies.

Pitch Your Startup was definitely at the top of our list in terms of media visibility, prize, but also in terms of learnings due to competing with so many other amazing startups.

Our overall experience has been quite positive.

The PYSU team has been quite helpful throughout the whole process. We were constantly updated about the organization. The pitch session itself was great: pitching in a 360° auditorium was quite epic I have to say.

What is Passbolt’s main mission? What are the key challenges it solves?

KM: Passbolt is the first Europe-made, 100% open-source, enterprise-grade password manager. Every digital team or business knows the pain of dealing everyday with hundreds of passwords that are changing constantly. These passwords need to be centralized, organized and shared among team members.

Most teams still use shared excel sheets, but they are not secure, lack collaborative features and create a lot of frustration. Advanced teams use cloud based password managers but they lack the privacy features that enterprises need: once their passwords flow outside of their organization onto someone else’s computer (the cloud), they are literally losing control over their most critical data. Not to mention, most of the existing password managers are based in the USA, and for European companies, especially those with industrial secrets, it raises important questions around digital sovereignty.

Passbolt was born to ease secure storing, organization and sharing of passwords for digital enterprises that do not want any compromise on privacy and data ownership.

Passbolt is made in Luxembourg, at the center of Europe, where these topics are taken seriously. It is 100% open source and can be installed on-premise, inside the company’s private network. Passbolt has a strong focus on collaboration, but it is also built for automation and DevOps: thanks to its open API and plugins it can be integrated easily with companies’ custom systems and infrastructures.

According to you what are the main advantages of the Grand-Duchy to launch and grow a startup?

P-O.R.: Our local ecosystem is incredibly well connected.

Local stakeholders work hand in hand, and the synergies achieved in Luxembourg are quite unique. Foreign startups contemplating launching a European HQ are usually amazed by such efficiency!

Luxembourg is also a fantastic testbed before conquering Europe. Last but not least, the environment provided by local incubators is amazing.

KM: The Grand-Duchy is really doing outstanding efforts to fulfill its vision and turn Luxembourg into a startup nation. The main advantages of being in Luxembourg for a startup are definitely the strong startup culture that has emerged in the past few years and the dynamic ecosystem around it. It is administratively quite easy to launch a startup and all the ingredients seem to be in place to ease the entrepreneurial journey: local skills, acceleration programs, incubators, events… it is quite dynamic.

In our case, we really felt welcome as a startup and we had tremendous help from the local actors. We were lucky to be selected, participate and graduate from the national startup acceleration program Fit4Start, which opened quite a few doors for us in terms of public grants and private fundings. We got quickly incubated at Technoport, an amazing place for entrepreneurs where we can interact regularly with other startups like ours.

Luxinnovation and the Ministry of Economy have always been extremely helpful in guiding us. Finally, I should mention that The Digital Tech Fund invested in Passbolt last year (a joint public-private fund from Luxembourg, managed by Expon Capital) as part of our Seed round, which has helped us accelerate our growth.

How is BIL participating in the support of the Luxembourg startup ecosystem? What other initiatives does the Bank support?

P-O.R.: I would like to start with the obvious: I believe BIL is mostly known in the startup-ecosystem as an enabler. As a bank, our key role is to provide financing to entrepreneurs to help them achieve their goals and grow their business. Looking back to three years of startup financing, I am proud to say we played our role in the growth of the ecosystem.

BIL supports startups in many ways – we finance them through the InnovFin scheme, we are one of the founding members of the Digital Tech fund (the only seed fund in Luxembourg), we support local incubators and initiatives (WIDE and The Founders Institute just to name a few).

We also support startups through collaboration and mentoring. For instance, we provided free expertise in marketing and UX to female startuppers from WIDE. We also produced and promoted some marketing material, mostly videos, to help founders get more exposure.

Oh, and of course, there’s this event we organize every year, The Startuppers Night, where we just have fun and celebrate the ecosystem.

How can Luxembourg reinforce its position as a startup hub?

Finally, what are the next steps for Passbolt?

KM: Since our Seed round a few months ago, we have already doubled the team size and the efforts start paying off. These are exciting times; we have ambitious goals for 2019 which should lead to a Series A in 2020.

Since our launch, Passbolt has become quite a popular product through word of mouth and unlike many startups we do not need to spend in Marketing to grow.

Our current problematic is to actually cope with the demand and find ways to satisfy our rapidly growing community. It’s a lot of work, but we are well aware that this is a kind of a luxury problem for a startup.

Product wise, the next big steps for us are the launch of our Europe-hosted cloud offer (for SMEs that do not have the necessary infrastructure to go on-premise) which is much awaited and for which we already have several thousands of pre-orders and the delivery of important features for our on-premise solution. Our goal for the end of the year is to reach an overall 100K active users for our solution.

P-O.R.: I believe the greatest challenges for Luxembourg to keep on growing as a startup hub are related to the availability of seed money and funding in general.

We need to come up with new schemes to ensure our startups are properly funded locally. The shortage of tech talents is also a burning issue.

KM: I would say that all the ingredients are already here, Luxembourg just needs to continue their efforts, anyone who is here can see how rapidly the ecosystem is growing. It makes no doubt that at this pace, soon the Grand-Duchy will be among the front-runners of the startup scene worldwide.

QUELLE MOBILITÉ POUR UN LUXEMBOURG EN MOUVEMENT ?

Les nouvelles technologies, les habitudes changeantes des consommateurs ainsi que les considérations environnementales grandissantes redéfinissent actuellement le secteur de la mobilité. Pour discuter de ces évolutions mais aussi de leurs impacts sur les professionnels de l’assurance, BEAST est allé à la rencontre de Michel Etienne, Innov’Expert Mobilité, Foyer.

Quels sont les principaux challenges en matière de mobilité que connait le Luxembourg ? Pouvez-vous partager quelques chiffres significatifs illustrant ces challenges ?

Le challenge numéro un est bien entendu la congestion du trafic : le Luxembourg est un des pays les plus embouteillés d’Europe. Et les indicateurs tendent à montrer que les problèmes pourraient s’aggraver sans changement majeur des comportements en matière de mobilité.

Avant 2050, le nombre de résidents devrait croître de 600 000 à 1 000 000.

A plus court terme, d’ici à 2026, le parc automobile composé actuellement de 415 000 véhicules devrait dépasser la barre des 500 000.

C’est au Luxembourg que le nombre de véhicules par 1 000 habitants est le plus élevé en Europe : celui-ci s’élève à 740. L’an passé, le nombre d’immatriculations a atteint un nouveau record, avec 52 811 nouveaux véhicules sur les routes luxembourgeoises.

#Business | Mobility Enfin, à ce jour, 85% des navetteurs frontaliers privilégient la voiture aux transports en commun, chaque jour. S’ils sont aujourd’hui au nombre de 195 000, nous pourrions compter jusqu’à 320 000 frontaliers avant 2050…

De manière globale, quelles sont les principales tendances du secteur de la mobilité ? Lesquelles ont le potentiel de redéfinir la mobilité au Grand-Duché ?

Les problèmes que connaît le Luxembourg sont, à ma connaissance, globalement similaires à ceux que connaissent les autres grandes villes européennes. La proximité des frontières rend néanmoins la mise en œuvre politique des solutions plus complexe.

Quant à la transformation de la mobilité, plusieurs axes peuvent être explorés. Dans un premier temps, tout comme pour l’énergie, la meilleure « mobilité » est celle que l’on ne consomme pas. Le développement de nouveaux services digitaux tout comme le télétravail sont une source d’économie. Citons également le développement conjoint de la multimodalité, des transports en commun et de la mobilité douce. Jusqu’il y a peu, la faiblesse de l’usage des transports en commun résidait dans la réalisation du ou des derniers kilomètres. À titre d’exemple, dans un réseau en étoile, un très court parcours exprimé en distance peut s’avérer très long en temps. Mais aussi, pour les navetteurs, un trajet court reliant la gare au lieu de travail nécessite parfois autant de temps que le trajet en train. L’avènement des vélos et trottinettes électriques ainsi que des monoroues permet de combler partiellement ces lacunes. C’est également le cas des plateformes digitales favorisant la multimodalité et qui facilitent clairement la vie des usagers et les incitent à recourir davantage aux transports en commun. Je citerai comme exemple l’application « MinRejseplan » que j’ai récemment utilisée à Copenhagen et qui propose de manière très efficace et ergonomique de nombreuses alternatives pour chaque trajet.

Enfin, l’économie du partage devrait également se développer au Luxembourg. Une voiture reste en réalité immobilisée la majeure partie de son temps : le partage du véhicule est donc une solution qu’il ne faut pas négliger. Cette solution fonctionne très bien dans les environnements fortement urbanisés et densément peuplés comme les grandes capitales européennes. Cette tendance mettra plus de temps à se développer au Grand-Duché dont le degré d’urbanisation est plus faible Quels sont les principaux freins au développement de cette nouvelle mobilité/mobilité alternatives ?

Avant tout, le Luxembourg doit être en mesure de gérer la croissance attendue de sa population, comme discuté plus tôt, qui impactera nécessairement la mobilité au sein du pays.

Si les solutions évoquées ci-dessus contribuent à une meilleure mobilité, il faut en gérer les effets de bord. Je pense notamment à la mobilité douce avec les trottinettes partagées qui encombrent les trottoirs.

Puis, nous remarquons que certains nouveaux services contribuent parfois à une congestion accrue. A titre d’exemple, l’application Uber, si elle a contribué à démocratiser le taxi, amène un nombre conséquent de véhicules supplémentaires sur les routes des villes.

Comment les produits d’assurance peuvent-il s’adapter à ces tendances ? Quelle est l’approche de Foyer ?

Dans le modèle traditionnel, c’est le véhicule qui est au centre du contrat d’assurance, avec des utilisateurs qui doivent assurer leur(s) voitures, leur(s) scooter(s), etc.

Or, avec l’avènement de la multimodalité et le développement de la mobilité douce, la voiture n’est plus qu’un élément de mobilité parmi les autres. Il est dès lors nécessaire de faire évoluer notre modèle en conséquence.

Dans notre nouveau produit mozaïk, nous avons mis en avant ce principe en proposant le nouveau module « biens de loisirs » qui couvre toutes les alternatives à la mobilité traditionnelle. Les trottinettes et vélo électriques, hoverboards et autres engins similaires sont couverts contre le vol et la casse, et ce dans le monde entier.

Qu’en est-il de la voiture autonome et du défi que son arrivée représente pour les spécialistes de l’assurance ?

La voiture autonome est attendue avec impatience mais elle tarde à arriver. Et il semble que cela pourrait encore durer un certain temps...

En réalité, malgré toutes les évolutions récentes, il reste très difficile de faire circuler dans le même environnement des voitures autonomes et traditionnelles. Plusieurs experts estiment même que cela ne sera pas possible et que les véhicules autonomes ne pourront à moyen terme véritablement rouler que sur site propre. En effet, l’environnement dans lequel circule un véhicule autonome doit être maîtrisé à la perfection et digitalement cartographié.

De nombreuses questions subsistent tant d’un point de vue éthique que technique pour définir les algorithmes de pilotage, sans oublier que les législations nationales et internationales doivent évoluer pour permettre un développement significatif de ce type de véhicule.

Quant aux défis qui se dressent face aux assureurs, j’en dénombre deux principaux : l’identification des responsabilités lorsqu’un véhicule autonome est impliqué, ainsi que la mesure du risque que représente la mise en circulation de chaque modèle de véhicule autonome. Car en effet, chaque modèle va disposer de son propre matériel (capteurs, caméras…) et d’algorithmes spécifiques : la qualité du pilotage ne sera a priori pas homogène.

Qu’en est-il de votre partenariat avec le SnT visant à sensibiliser le public luxembourgeois aux enjeux de la conduite autonome ? Quelles sont les prochaines étapes de cette collaboration ?

Par sa volonté d’être au cœur de la mobilité Luxembourgeoise, Foyer s’implique également avec des acteurs locaux.

Dans le cadre d’un accord de recherche conclu récemment avec l’Uni, un doctorant auprès du SnT, a rejoint Foyer à mi-temps. Notre compagnie contribue au développement du véhicule autonome de l’Université. Il s’agit avant tout d’une activité de Recherche & Développement qui vise deux objectifs. Tout d’abord, grâce aux multiples capteurs qui sont placés sur le véhicule, mieux appréhender les enjeux technologiques et nous permettre d’adapter nos modèles de risque en conséquence (par exemple, quel est le réel impact des systèmes d’aide à la conduite (ADAS) sur la sécurité des usagers). Ensuite, si la technologie est une chose, le facteur culturel et l’adoption de la solution par les personnes en est une autre. Prenons par exemple le cruise control adaptatif qui est un premier facteur d’autonomisation. Plusieurs études montrent que, bien qu’il contribue à la sécurité des usagers, la plupart des conducteurs ne l’utilisent en réalité pas ou même le désactivent.

Nous souhaitons donc accompagner au mieux notre clientèle sur le long chemin de l’autonomisation pour contribuer à la baisse du nombre d’accidents sur nos routes.

Après une première phase de test durant laquelle le véhicule ne sera utilisé que par les chercheurs de l’université, nous permettrons à nos clients de l’essayer pour les sensibiliser au sujet et être à l’écoute de leurs besoins.

D’autres projets innovants visant à redéfinir la mobilité sont-ils à l’étude ?

Foyer a lancé en interne son programme de Mobilité Intelligente 2026 : MI6. Au-delà du clin d’œil à l’univers technologique de James Bond – l’agent secret 007 faisant partie du service de renseignements extérieurs du Royaume -Uni, et bénéficiant à chaque épisode de la saga des derniers gadgets technologiques possibles et imaginables –, cette initiative réunit des services technologiques (IT, Data Studio), légaux, opérationnels et commerciaux pour nous préparer à la mobilité de demain.

Un premier chantier consiste à enrichir notre écosystème en participant à des conférences et en concluant des partenariats publics et privés avec des acteurs innovants de la mobilité. Nous pourrons ainsi mieux accompagner notre clientèle et contribuer à la prévention, par exemple en l’informant de l’évolution de la règlementation et en dispensant quelques conseils pratiques pour un usage plus sûr des trottinettes électriques et engins similaires.

Ensuite, la compagnie souhaite adapter ses produits aux nouveaux usages comme la micro-mobilité (monocycles, trottinettes électriques, etc.) ou encore la multimodalité en incluant d’office dans nos produits des garanties qui permettent à nos clients de circuler en toute sérénité et sécurité, quel que soit le moyen de locomotion utilisé.

#Business | Strategy In an environment where digital transformation and customer experience are redefining business strategies, BEAST met with Ajay Bali (Associate Partner-Digital Advisory Services, EY Luxembourg) to discuss the «product management» approach now favored by innovative startups but also by well-established companies. Client expectations and experiences are the center pieces of these strategies: customers are actually unconsciously changing the way companies are building products and services.

«Product management is all about understanding customers’ needs, to later deliver products that add value to the clients,» first states Ajay Bali, who continues: «the goal is to see pain points and figure out how to solve them, before the clients even notice these frictions exist. Looking at history, this approach allowed companies to develop new features, products and services that were not seen as necessary when released but that have now become essential elements». To illustrate his saying, the expert gives the example of the iPhone, released more than 10 years ago and which brought several new functionalities to the users. «Often, there’s a need, yet clients are not even aware of it.

Product Management takes a step forward, figures out what is needed, and helps translate it into a product or service. It has the potential to change the game in many industries and sectors,» explains Ajay Bali. Therefore, product management is not just about inventing new products but rather about understanding the customers and what is gravitating around them.

Classic management methods – from the definition of the concept to going to the market and later getting feedback, changing the model, etc. – actually needed to transform and adapt to today’s digital environment where immediacy and «real-time» have become essential for customers. «We have been taking about many new approaches, LEAN, design thinking, agile, and lately Product Management.

All these methods have one thing in common: they all aim at answering the needs of the customers.

Look for a basic need you want to solve, and get feedback as soon as possible in the process,» adds the Associate Partner at EY Luxembourg. In this respect, the entire prototyping and testing approaches have been modified and allow companies to bring new products to the market and get immediate reactions.

According to Ajay Bali, product management also echoes with «change management» and pushes for a new type of corporate culture: «we have gone from a waterfall approach to a fail fast approach, which puts feedback back in the loop. Moreover, digital has helped tremendously. How can you test the idea when you don’t even have the product? Technology has a big impact in the visualization of the potential future product, through wireframes, prototypes, video, or even virtual reality and digital twins. With these methods, companies can get the clients to experience their concepts and ideas. Yet, it is important to add that Product Management is not about technology, it is about what you solve for the customers! Keep the clients in mind, and start conceptualizing. Then, use any tech that might help.» At EY, experts have been working on many new technologies, always looking at «what’s in it for the clients, partners and the entire ecosystem». For instance, as explained by Ajay Bali, the Blockchain technology can be used to deal with the solvability and traceability issues for a certain type of clients, but the tech in itself has no specific purpose. It only becomes interesting as soon as it starts solving customers’ issues: these approaches are putting the clients are the center.

Through its expertise, network and EYnovation program designed to foster innovation, EY has developed a strong industry knowledge in terms of customer experience. «We support startups in ticking all the boxes, from the validation of the first ideas to prototyping, to testing and bringing the product to the market. It can be described as give-and-take relationship: we guide them and learn from their agile ways of doing things,» highlights the expert.

He also explains that the Luxembourgish market is now accepting and adapting to the «fail fast» startup mentality and therefore to the Product Management approach, with its ongoing processes and feedbacks to constantly monitoring and assess the needs of customers. «Failure is actually part of the journey, and even part of success. Moreover, experts sometimes need to take a pivotal view on the products and services they have designed, even if they have spent months on it. Companies must be sure they are heading in the right direction and therefore be critical about what they are doing. Sometimes ideas need to mature to be later turned into successful products,» underlines Ajay Bali.

Focusing on the entire product lifecycle

In the Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg, many actors, starting with the multiple initiatives taken by the government, but also with incubators, clusters and academia, are pushing the new concepts of business and innovation, including the Product Management approach. «Private companies are also organizing hackathons, and universities are teaching students how to become entrepreneurs. And we are already seeing the results of such projects, with many startups being created in the country, or settling in Luxembourg, which is considered as a gateway to Europe, and a first hub to later extend to a wider market,» comments the Associate Director.

He advocates for more training on key topics such as UI/UX design, prototyping and testing, but also for more public-private partnerships, incentives and investments, which are fostering growth.

«Projects have a starting point and an end. Then, most of the time, it’s back to business as usual.

But with Product Management, we are now looking at the entire product lifecycle, and are seeing it as an ongoing process. Where other strategies would have basically stopped after the product is brought to the market, Product Management is revalidating customers’ challenges, always improving its services and bringing in new features,» adds Ajay Bali, explaining the evolution from Project to Product Management.

The approach also builds on a 360 view, starting with the first ideas and the definition of the initial concept, to the state of the market and the numbers of competitors, etc. «How can this product become a reality?» he asks, before answering: «We prefer to look at it on a customer journey perspective, not just as a product. How will the customer react to the product and interact with it? On the commercial side, how will I market the product and sell it to my clients?»

As a matter of fact, product lifecycle is deeply linked to what is called the customer journey map.

How to foster growth in Luxembourg

According to him, the perfect product manager can be compared to a Swiss knife: he/she must be able to understand what’s there for the customer first, and then turn it into a product that does not exist yet. Then, the manager has to translate it to the tech team. «A multidimensional skillset is needed, from design to sale. He/she needs to look at – and understand – the whole picture,» concludes Ajay Bali.

LE STORYTELLING AU CŒUR DE L’ÉVÉNEMENTIEL PAR ALEXANDRE KEILMANN

Plus de six mois après l’ouverture d’un nouvel espace de réception situé dans le quartier vibrant du Kirchberg, Kinepolis Luxembourg, et plus particulièrement Amandine Schosseler, National B2B Manager, revient sur les principales tendances du secteur événementiel et partage ses bonnes pratiques dans l’organisation réussie d’un événement professionnel au Grand-Duché de Luxembourg.

Quelles sont aujourd’hui les principales tendances du secteur MICE (Meetings, incentives, conferencing, exhibitions) ? Comment ont-elles évolué ces dernières années ?

Nous remarquons qu’aujourd’hui, les responsables événementiels sont en recherche constante d’originalité et de créativité pour satisfaire et surprendre leurs clients, qu’ils soient internes ou externes. Afin de provoquer des émotions, ils se penchent sur la tendance du «storytelling» : il s’agit là de raconter une véritable histoire aux participants, de les embarquer dans l’univers que l’on souhaite créer. Ces nouveaux concepts, et leur mise en place, s’accompagnent nécessairement de fortes exigences des organisateurs qui doivent proposer des expériences complètes aux visiteurs. Paradoxalement, nous remarquons une demande grandissante pour des solutions clés en main, laissant tout de même la place à la personnalisation de certains aspects événementiels.

Au Luxembourg, le marketing événementiel ainsi que les initiatives RH visant à motiver – mais aussi à remercier – les collaborateurs reste fortement plébiscité par les sociétés. Le nombre d’événements organisés est effectivement en constante évolution, et ce depuis des années.

Cependant, le panier moyen se réduit année après année.

Nous devons donc redoubler d’énergie pour répondre à leurs demandes, et veiller à proposer des événements qui malgré tout se distingueront de ceux organisés par leurs concurrents. Le challenge est donc important.

Enfin, il est important de souligner qu’au Grand-Duché, la proximité du lieu, avec un accès facile et un parking proche à disponibilité, reste un des éléments clés pour satisfaire les participants qui bien souvent se déplacent dans des véhicules personnels ou de société, avec un nombre grandissant de frontaliers qui doivent accéder facilement aux grands axes autoroutiers.

#Entertainment | Events Quels ont été les principaux challenges dans la mise en place de l’espace de réception Kin’eck ? Comment répondez-vous aux tendances actuelles du secteur évoquées plus tôt ?

Le respect du timing fut le premier et plus important challenge. En effet, il fallait absolument que le Kin’eck soit prêt à briller lors de son inauguration officielle qui s’est déroulée en novembre dernier, à l’occasion du Gala Marketers organisé par l’agence de communication Farvest.

Ce soir-ci nous avons pu accueillir plus de 500 convives, qui ont pu dignement fêter les 10 ans de cet événement, placé sous le signe de la créativité. La thématique «Dr. Marcom & Mr. Hyde», détournée du roman classique de Robert Louis Stevenson collait parfaitement au lieu : un cinéma dans lequel il est désormais possible d’organiser des évènements b2b originaux.

Cette flexibilité permettant à nos clients, qui évoluent dans des secteurs bien différents, de s’approprier le lieu était également cruciale : nous devions offrir un environnement le plus «neutre» possible et permettre ainsi la plus grande variété de types d’événements possible.

En effet, il fallait assurer une grande fonctionnalité qui puisse répondre à un maximum d’événements : cela passe par des équipements qui doivent être disponibles pour le client au moment de la location mais aussi du matériel qu’ils peuvent utiliser sur place.

Puis, nous devions également réfléchir à la «construction» en elle-même de l’espace, toujours en anticipant les différents types d’événements qui pouvaient être organisés afin de pouvoir répondre directement aux différentes demandes que nous allions recevoir. A titre d’exemple, nous avons loué des tables uniquement afin de tester la capacité maximale de la salle pour des événements en format assis.

Comment les départements des ressources humaines, combinés aux experts marketing, peuvent-elles contribuer aux bonnes performances de leurs salariés, avec, notamment, l’aide de Kinepolis ?

Dans le contexte actuel de guerre des talents, de nombreuses études mesurant la motivation et les performances des salariés ont été réalisées afin de définir les principaux aspects qui tiennent à cœur des collaborateurs, permettant ainsi de mesurer leur bienêtre et in fine le succès de l’entreprise. Sans surprise, les conclusions sont unanimes : des collaborateurs motivés produisent de meilleurs résultats.

Dès lors, c’est bien souvent aux responsables des ressources humaines qu’incombe la responsabilité de créer un lien entre et avec les collaborateurs. Cela se traduit notamment par des actions de team-building ou par des soirées d’entreprise. Plusieurs initiatives s’offrent à eux, grâce à Kinepolis Luxembourg : ils peuvent utiliser un film pour un message spécifique pour motiver les salariés via une projection privée, ou encore récompenser leurs collaborateurs avec la billetterie cinéma.

Quels sont les principaux éléments à prendre en compte dans l’organisation d’un tel événement professionnel ?

Comment accompagnez-vous vos partenaires dans ces démarches ?

Dans un premier temps, il faut s’intéresser au public cible (interne ou externe) : combien de personnes inviter et par quel biais le faire ? Bien entendu, un budget doit être rapidement défini : la grandeur de l’événement dépendra surtout de ce paramètre incontournable.

Viennent ensuite le choix de la date (qui correspondra au mieux à mon public cible) ainsi que du lieu.

Ce dernier va nécessairement varier en fonction du type d’événement que vous souhaitez organiser. Pour une réunion professionnelle et officielle, choisissez un lieu plutôt neutre. Pour provoquer un effet «Waouh», pour ne pas opter pour un lieu prestigieux ?

Notons également qu’il est primordial de bien s’entourer pour éviter toute surprise le jour J. Dès lors, nous conseillons de bien définir des objectifs SMART – Spécifiques, Mesurables, Acceptables, Réalistes et Temporellement définis – avant de se lancer.

Ensuite viendra le moment de chercher – puis de trouver – le bon endroit et le bon moment, en ayant bien pris soin de vérifier le calendrier des événements organisés, en évitant les vacances et congés scolaires, etc. Avant tout l’endroit doit être en accord avec le message principal que vous souhaitez diffuser !

Dans un pays où les événements b2b sont légion, Vauban, Ecole et Lycée Français de Luxembourg, propose désormais un espace événementiel, quelques mois après avoir pris possession de ses nouveaux locaux au cœur du flambant neuf quartier de la Cloche d’Or. BEAST est allé à la rencontre de son Directeur exécutif, Bruno Lorrain, pour se plonger dans ce lieu qui mêle nécessairement pédagogie, culture et arts.

Un amphithéâtre de plus de 376 places, une salle de réception de plus de 500 m2, voici des équipements qui peuvent apparaître comme peu communs pour un établissement scolaire.

Pourquoi Vauban possède-t-il de telles installations événementielles ?

Les installations événementielles du nouveau campus permettent de répondre à un réel besoin pédagogique identifié dès le début du projet de construction du campus de Gasperich. En effet, fort d’une longue tradition d’ouverture culturelle et de promotion des arts, les enseignants de Vauban encouragent et veillent chaque année à construire de nombreux projets liés à la culture artistique et scientifique.

L’agenda de l’établissement est dès lors abondant : conférences et rencontres à destination des élèves et parents d’élèves, salon des formations, salon des métiers, festival de cinéma, spectacles musicaux, fête des sciences, expositions…

« L’arrivée d’un tel lieu événementiel dans le paysage luxembourgeois atteste de la tendance «marketing événementiel» qui reste très forte et ancrée au Grand-Duché. Cependant, on remarque que le Luxembourg est également victime d’une pénurie de lieux événementiels, et la mise à disposition de tels espaces sur le marché ouvre de nouvelles perspectives pour l’organisation d’événements corporate.

Vauban dispose de plusieurs espaces avec des surfaces qui varient de 230 à 2300 m2. Au total, ce sont plus de 150 événements qui ont rythmé les agendas de toute la communauté éducative de l’établissement durant cette année scolaire.

Le pôle événementiel du campus permet alors d’inscrire davantage les enseignements de l’école et du lycée dans le dispositif d’ouverture culturelle soutenu par le projet pédagogique de l’établissement. Il offre des configurations spatiales pertinentes et adaptées à plusieurs types d’événements, de disciplines et de pratiques pédagogiques.

Le volume de l’amphithéâtre (376 places) par exemple permet de soutenir un grand nombre de projets et offre une scène aux élèves qui pratiquent le théâtre, la musique, et les arts du spectacle avec un système audiovisuel spécialisé, un éclairage professionnel et des caractéristiques acoustiques de très bonne qualité. Par ailleurs, l’Espace Confluences offre également un lieu propice aux réceptions, aux salons et aux examens.

Pourquoi avoir décidé de proposer votre espace aux professionnels luxembourgeois ?

Le projet est né de la demande d’associations et d’entreprises dans le cadre d’opérations événementielles, de séminaires, de conférences…

Sachant que les membres de la communauté scolaire n’exploitent pas les locaux sur les temps hors scolaires (soirées et vacances scolaires), nous avons étudié le projet de mettre à disposition nos espaces événementiels à des tiers.

Quelles sont les principales caractéristiques de ce nouvel espace ? Qu’est-ce qui en fait un lieu singulier ?

Le pôle événementiel est un espace fonctionnel qui offre une unité de lieu : l’amphithéâtre, l’espace bar, la salle de réception et le patio extérieur sont sur un même niveau. Cet espace spacieux dispose d’une entrée privative.

L’architecture du lieu est épurée et contemporaine, correspondant aux tendances actuelles pour un rendu final qui plait à tous.

Les fonctionnalités ont également été étudiées par nos équipes lors de la conception initiale du lieu. L’amphithéâtre et la salle de réception disposent d’équipements de haute qualité : sonorisation haute fidélité, système de vidéoprojection, régie son et lumières à l’amphithéâtre. Ces points importants signifient que l’organisateur d’un événement peut compter sur des équipements audiovisuels déjà très fournis.

Par ailleurs, cet espace est facile d’accès. Le campus se situe dans la ville de Luxembourg au sein d’un quartier en pleine expansion dans lequel les transports en commun jouent un rôle important. Vauban est ainsi desservi par plusieurs lignes de bus de la ville, la gare de Howald, le P+R Howald et à terme le tram. Par ailleurs, le campus dispose également d’un parking privé.

Pour BEAST, ce créatif décrypte le monde du marketing visuel et ses dernières tendances, que nous pouvons notamment apercevoir lors de festivals, concerts, mais également lors d’événements b2b.

Notamment au Grand-Duché de Luxembourg.

Grâce au festival mondialement connu Tomorrowland, un de nos clients fidèles depuis 2005, les combinaisons artistiques 2D (impressions grand format sur bâches et/ou panneaux) et structures en 3D (en polystyrène et/ou en gonflable) sont devenues indispensables et un strict minimum pour offrir aux visiteurs du monde entier une expérience « entière ».

Comment voyez-vous le secteur évoluer dans les années à venir ?

Si on observe le bas du marché gonflable – je pense aux jeux standards et autres gonflables de volume pour la location – on remarque que les fabricants Chinois actuels augmentent leurs prix et deviennent trop cher pour l’Europe, sans parler du fait qu’ils rencontrent des soucis au niveau de l’application des normes REACH, anti-feu et EN 14960. Les clients ayant donc besoin de ce type de gonflables vont se tourner vers des fournisseurs européens.

Quelles sont les principales tendances du marketing visuel et du monde du gonflable ?

Le monde du marketing est de plus en plus visuel. A titre d’exemple, la quantité de communications visuelles produites par biais de photos prises continue de croître. Et cette tendance ne risque pas de s’arrêter.

Par définition, le monde du gonflable 3D est visuel et il rejoint parfaitement un esprit écologique, durable, efficace et éphémère.

Il s’agit d’un produit qui a trouvé une symbiose croissante dans les media sociaux grâce aux festivals et autres types d’événements du genre.

Nous remarquons également que les agences et autres prescripteurs découvrent de plus en plus le potentiel et les avantages du gonflable et les combinent avec d’autres techniques, services et produits pour créer des concepts innovants. L’heure est aujourd’hui à la co-création.

De son côté, X-Treme continuera à produire localement des projets sur mesure, avec des lead times très serrés et en utilisant les 25 années d’expérience et un know-how dans plusieurs secteurs et champs d’application dans des secteurs très différents, voire même singuliers.

Dans le marché haut de gamme, l’objectif est que le gonflable n’apparaisse plus comme un gonflable. Puis, dans ce marché du gonflable premium, les mondes réel et virtuel évoluent vers la co-création, comme c’est le cas pour le mainstage du festival Untold en Roumanie, avec l’ajout d’écrans digitaux dans les scènes, combinés à des structures gonflables et à de la vidéo-projection. Cette évolution ne risque pas de s’arrêter et nous mènera vers d’autres domaines comme l’industrie, le médical, l’artistique, etc. C’est très excitant !

Quels sont les principaux secteurs qui font aujourd’hui appel à vos services ?

Le secteur des agences de publicité, plus spécifiquement d’activation et de fieldmarketing, reste à la base de notre activité, mais aujourd’hui, les d’organisateurs de festivals et autres événements culturels prennent beaucoup d’ampleur. Nous travaillons également avec de nombreux organisateurs au niveau de la signalisation et autres sponsors d’événements sportifs de masse, dans lesquelles les gonflables ont désormais une grande importance et favorisent le partage de photos et, in fine, permet d’augmenter la notoriété de la manifestation ou de la marque. Comme vous le constatez, nous nous focalisons sur la clientèle b2b et ne réalisons, à l’heure actuelle, pas de travaux pour les particuliers sauf dans le milieu artistique.

Comment vous adaptez-vous à leurs besoins ?

Pour les scènes de festivals, nous proposons toute une gamme de textiles sans enduction en PVC pour éviter l’aspect trop brillant, puis nous nous impliquons dans la formation et la coordination du (dé)montage.

X-Treme se spécialise dans le design et la finition de telles structures et peut garantir, voire agrandir la résistance au vent du gonflable : un point crucial pour l’organisateur et les sponsors qui doivent garantir la sécurité des participants à l’événement. Ce know-how est primordial pour obtenir du succès à l’export avec les structures gonflables. En effet, après la conception même de la structure, la résistance au vent est toujours la deuxième question à se poser.

Comment votre processus créatif se déroule-t-il, des premières discussions avec vos clients à la mise en place sur site du gonflable ?

Nous ne travaillons qu’avec des agences et des prescripteurs professionnels et généralement, pour que nous puissions leur communiquer un budget, un briefing de base et quelques informations clés concernant la taille et l’application suffisent.

D’une manière plus structurelle et anticipative, nos sessions créatives illustrent le potentiel du gonflable en auto-ventilé/en air captif et invitent les prescripteurs à inclure du gonflable dans la proposition et/ou le pitch auprès du client final. Quant au contenu potentiel de ces sessions, X-Treme compte plus de 20 000 références et projets gonflables, en 25 années d’activité.

Une fois bien la relation professionnelle établie, ce sont nos prescripteurs et les partenaires qui viennent vers nous avec un concept créatif après un brainstorming interne. Notre force réside dans la vitesse de réaction pour vous faire parvenir un devis et ensuite dans la « traduction » du concept validé dans une structure gonflable viable et en cherchant des solutions techniques pour répondre aux besoins spécifiques de chaque client final.

Quelles sont les principales caractéristiques techniques de vos constructions ?

En général, il s’agit de textiles polyester, avec ou sans enduction, mais les caractéristiques techniques se font en fonction de l’application, la forme, la taille… bref, en fonction de l’effet voulu par le client !

L’impression est faite par des imprimantes numériques grand format Inkjet et, de plus en plus, la sublimation est demandée pour éviter l’aspect plastique. Nous utilisons encore souvent l’airbrush ou la peinture classique.

Les souffleries utilisées (air/pression) le sont en fonction du type de gonflable et du grammage de textile, la taille, la vitesse de gonflage, le bruit accepté de la soufflerie : ils ont aujourd’hui l’embarras du choix…

Quant à l’éclairage, il est généralement réalisé directement par des spécialistes, dans le cadre de cette co-création déjà mentionnée plus tôt. Et bien souvent, ce sont ces spécialistes qui nous contactent car ils ont d’importants besoins en gonflables.

Pouvez-vous partager avec nos lecteurs quelques -uns des plus beaux projets que vous avez réalisés dernièrement ? Qu’en est-il de vos réalisations au Luxembourg ?

Il m’est très difficile de faire une sélection mais n’hésitez pas à vous rendre sur notre site web et inscrivez-vous à nos e-news diffusées 6 fois par an. Nous pouvons dénombrer quelques projets promotionnels pour les sponsors d’événements sportifs au Luxembourg : je pense notamment à la tente, ou plutôt showroom, gonflable pour la marque automobile ŠKODA, un imposant arche 14 x 7 m «ERGO» créé dans le cadre du Tour du Luxembourg, des verres de bière gonflables en auto-ventilé pour le brasseur Bofferding, etc…

Puis, l’ours polaire réalisé pour la Docler Ice Party, qui s’est déroulée au concept-store SMETS en décembre dernier, était également un grand projet qui nous a passionné, et qui a pu démontrer notre savoir-faire et notre expérience au Grand-Duché.

MULTIPLICA EXPLORE LES ARTS NUMÉRIQUES C’est du 1er au 3 mars dernier que s’est déroulée la deuxième édition du festival Multiplica des Rotondes. Celle-ci a proposé performances, installations interactives, ateliers participatifs et rencontres au grand public, avec pour mission de l’emmener au cœur de la création numérique et de la révolution digitale. Retour en images sur ce festival biennal qui se donne comme défi de faire rimer «numérique» à la fois avec «artistique» et «accessible».

L’INTELLIGENCE ARTIFICIELLE AU CŒUR DE L’ART PROMU PAR SONIC INVASION PAR ALEXANDRE KEILMANN

Combiner les nouvelles technologies pour créer un art nouveau et évolutif, telle est l’idée de Sonic Invasion, modélisée à travers l’œuvre Memory Search, présentée pour la première fois sur le sol luxembourgeois à l’occasion de Multiplica au mois de mars dernier.

Suite à ce festival faisant la part belle aux arts numériques, BEAST est allé à la rencontre de Damiano Picci, l’un des membres du collectif Sonic Invasion. Il revient sur la création de l’œuvre, les challenges rencontrés, tout en partageant sa vision future de l’art dans un environnement toujours plus digital.

Selon moi, le numérique permet ainsi le renouvellement de l’art, et son évolution dans l’environnement digital actuel,» explique le jeune artiste luxembourgeois, pour qui cette rencontre marquante rime avec le début d’une nouvelle passion. Ainsi, depuis maintenant environ 3 années, avec ses amis et collaborateurs de Sonic Invasion, il baigne dans un nouvel univers, celui de l’art digital, également appelé «new media art» en langue anglaise. «Ce domaine regorge de magnifiques projets, à la fois technologiques et futuristes,» s’exclame Damiano Picci.

«Memory Search», ou l’Intelligence Artificielle appliquée à l’art

Installée au cœur du créative hub 1535°, dans la ville de Differdange, la startup luxembourgeoise – et surtout collectif d’artistes aux compétences bien distinctes – Sonic Invasion fut l’une des principales attractions de Multiplica avec son œuvre Memory Search. Celle-ci intègre plusieurs technologies innovantes, et notamment cette intelligence artificielle qui promet de redéfinir notre société toute entière lorsqu’elle sera arrivée à maturité…

Le digital pour créer un art nouveau Il y a encore quelques années, de son aveu, Damiano Picci n’était que très peu intéressé par le digital et les importantes tendances qui en découlent, lui qui envisageait alors une carrière dans le domaine musical. «C’est l’un de mes professeurs qui m’a littéralement ouvert les yeux changeant instantanément mon univers. En effet, je me suis rendu compte que grâce à l’innovation et notamment aux nouvelles technologies, nous pouvions créer de nouveaux projets de toutes pièces.

Le jeune collectif luxembourgeois s’est alors lancé dans la réalisation de Memory Search, œuvre se basant sur l’Intelligence Artificielle : si celle-ci est d’ores-et-déjà présente dans notre vie quotidienne, sous différentes formes, Sonic Invasion voit cette IA comme une technologie qui peut aussi mettre en avant la beauté de notre planète et ainsi jouer un rôle dans la prise de conscience afin de préserver les joyaux de la nature. Pour Damiano Picci, qui se spécialise désormais dans le coding, «si cette technologie affiche de telles capacités, elle peut également nous permettre de créer de nouvelles formes d’art, voire même un nouvel art à part entière. Elle donne effectivement la possibilité de créer des œuvres encore jamais vues ni même imaginées auparavant.

Mieux encore, le Machine Learning, qui se nourrit du passage de chaque personne et qui contribue à part entière au développement de l’œuvre, va apprendre continuellement. Cela permet ainsi à l’art d’évoluer, de s’améliorer ! Cet aspect est totalement démentiel !»

L’œuvre présentée pour la première fois par le collectif luxembourgeois consiste à sélectionner des images sur le web puis à les examiner instantanément, grâce aux technologies d’Intelligence Artificielle et plus précisément de Machine Learning. «Dès lors, chaque personne qui entre dans l’œuvre participe à l’amélioration du système.

#Art | Digital La présence d’écrans représentant un réseau neuronal – nous avons plusieurs milliards de neurones dans notre cerveau, traitant de nombreuses informations – apporte quant à elle un aspect pédagogique, alors que le son, avec une musique générative et unique, renforce la dimension artistique de l’œuvre,» précise Damiano Picci. Plus concrètement, il suffisait aux personnes de partager un de leurs souvenirs personnels sous forme d’image et via le Bluetooth, pour observer le réseau neuronal l’analyser, et ensuite comparer l’interprétation de l’algorithme avec sa propre vision.

Plusieurs challenges se sont alors dressés face aux 4 membres de Sonic Invasion et aux indépendants qui les accompagnent généralement : en plus de créer l’algorithme, il a fallu réfléchir à la création de cette musique générative différente pour chaque personne, puis s’assurer de la sélection d’images libres de droit sur le web. Car en effet, ce sont ces dernières qui génèrent à la fois la musique et les visuels affichés au centre de l’œuvre.

Puis, ce sont bien entendu ces interconnections et mélanges qui transforment les expériences connues pour en créer de nouvelles, totalement inédites. Car, l’art tend aujourd’hui clairement vers l’expérience : il ne s’agit plus uniquement d’une image ou d’une sculpture, mais d’une œuvre vivante ou changeante. Les images se transforment, les couleurs varient… comme cela peut être le cas avec de l’art contenant des technologies d’IA, évoluant selon l’humeur des personnes participantes, leur niveau de stress, etc.

L’artiste souligne également l’apport des technologies VR (Virtual Reality) et AR (Augmented Reality), permettant la combinaison des univers digitaux et réels, et offrant de nouvelles possibilités aux futurs artistes en herbe.

Vers l’art collaboratif «Selon moi, le futur de l’art passera par la collaboration entre des personnes ayant des compétences bien différentes les unes des autres. Mais également en combinant ces compétences avec la technologie.

Tous les milieux s’entremêleront dans une seule et unique œuvre d’art», explique Damiano Picci lorsque nous abordons sa vision future de l’art. Ainsi, Memory Search est le résultat des expertises de piliers de Sonic Invasion : Ruth Lorang, l’architecte d’intérieur et spécialiste de la gestion de l’espace, Cédric Fischer, Recording Engineer, Oliver Lang, l’expert en production audio, puis Damiano Picci, le «sound systems specialist» pour qui le coding n’a désormais plus de secret.

Cette vision de l’art, le jeune créatif a notamment pu l’expérimenter à dans la ville de Berlin, connue pour sa vibrante et dynamique scène artistique. Dans la capitale allemande, comme le souligne le jeune artiste, toutes les œuvres sont créées dans un ensemble, par des collectifs.

VERS L’ÉMANCIPATION DE LA MACHINE NUMÉRIQUE

«La Vallée Dérangeante», tel est le nom de la création, à la croisée des chemins entre installation interactive, performance sonore et prouesse chorégraphique, exposée par Laura Mannelli à l’occasion de Multiplica.

Le festival des art numériques, organisé aux Rotondes, s’est déroulé au mois de mars dernier, et a éveillé la curiosité des visiteurs qui ont pu découvrir de nouvelles formes d’art au cours d’un weekend, tout en poussant des réflexions bien plus profondes. Retour avec l’artiste et architecte luxembourgeoise sur son œuvre qui questionne la notion d’avatar… avec un soupçon d’intelligence artificielle.

«Dans cette œuvre, l’Intelligence Artificielle se définit avant tout comme un contexte poétique, plus qu’une appropriation des mécanismes. La réflexion est en effet la suivante : il s’agit là de la rencontre de l’Homme avec la machine numérique ou l’Autre,» explique tout d’abord Laura Mannelli. Dans la Vallée Dérangeante, elle se base notamment sur le concept du roboticien japonais Masahiro Mori, en étudiant la réponse émotionnelle de l’être humain face à des entités non-humaines, et qui passionne également l’artiste luxembourgeoise.

Ainsi, cette réflexion autour de l’avènement de l’IA et de la robotisation (avec des concepts ressemblant de manière de plus en plus fidèle à l’Humain) a amené Laura Mannelli à créer un avatar, décrit comme être que nous habitons, un réceptacle, un vaisseau, qui veut aujourd’hui s’affranchir des règles qui lui ont été imposées afin de s’émanciper. Elle précise : «cette machine numérique veut justement passer de la simple machine à l’Autre, un corps indépendant et autonome. Cet Autre correspond à une nouvelle entité, dissidente, dotée d’une nouvelle forme d’intelligence émotionnelle».

#Art | Digital Une œuvre collaborative entre différentes formes d’art et appuyée par la technologie L’œuvre vise à questionner et à créer une certaine ambiguïté face à une telle entité et allant jusqu’à provoquer une empathie chez certains. «En effet, selon le concept développé par Mori, plus une entité animée nous ressemble, plus elle est susceptible de déclencher un sentiment de familiarité chez l’observateur humain.

Un seuil existe cependant : si nous décelons un défaut, nous pouvons alors tomber dans la Vallée Dérangeante ou de l’Etrange, provoquant un sentiment de malaise,» souligne l’artiste. Pour arriver à provoquer puis retranscrire de telles émotions, Laura Mannelli s’est entourée de nombreux artistes afin de constituer un véritable écosystème créatif.

Elle a notamment fait appel à la chorégraphe et danseuse Aude Arago pour développer un langage corporel de l’avatar. Le parallèle avec l’IA prend alors tout son sens : la machine apprend par mimétisme grâce à des technologies de motion capture, qui assigne des mouvements à l’Autre.

Ainsi, celui-ci pourra s’affranchir de son statut de machine et s’émanciper. Comme l’explique l’artiste, «l’empathie se fait par la danse, et les mouvements du corps. Aude n’a pas de connaissance particulière du monde technologique, et a dû imaginer une chorégraphie dans un espace avec de la gravité et un sol, pour qu’elle soit retranscrite dans un espace infini, sans représentation géographique. Ce fût véritable challenge.»

Nécessairement, l’univers sonore, avec pour but de plonger le public dans ce monde virtuel, fût clé. Ce son mouvant et mutant a été imaginé et composé par Juan De Guillebon aka DyE, accompagné des experts du collectif luxembourgeois Sonic Invasion : «les jeunes artistes ont notamment créé une pédale sur mesure, permettant à DyE de décider en temps réel quel son sort des enceintes. Il s’agit d’un système ambisonic spécialement configuré pour l’œuvre.

Ensemble, ils ont réussi à mettre en place un système qui englobe le public dans cette plasticité sonore, qui évolue également avec la présence des visiteurs, ajoutant une couche d’ambiguïté supplémentaire».

Pour l’accompagner dans la réalisation de l’œuvre, elle a également pu compter sur Frédérick Thompson, Chief Technologist Officer spécialisé en design immersif, avec qui elle collabore depuis 2008 : ensemble ils ont pu créer un machine numérique étrange, dessinée par Laura et interprétée par son acolyte, provoquant des émotions et notamment l’empathie. Comme l’explique l’artiste, «on peut voir La Vallée Dérangeante comme le fossé entre l’Humain et l’imaginaire. En effet, la proximité à l’imaginaire altère le côté humain de l’apparence». Cette cohérence technologique, également coordonnée par Frédérick Thompson, était d’ailleurs la clé de la réussite pour une telle création. «Ce projet me tient particulièrement à cœur car il représente le travail en collaboration et l’ouverture de cette nouvelle culture numérique, ce croisement entre le monde réel et le monde virtuel dans lesquels nous évoluons désormais.

Ces différents paradigmes, associés, permettent d’innover, d’aller vers les champs créatifs des uns et des autres,» précise Laura Mannelli, qui s’est quant à elle intéressée à la plasticité de ce corps éphémère, numérique et impalpable, que l’on retrouve au centre du concept de Vallée Dérangeante, et notamment renforcé par la présence de plusieurs voiles.

Nourrir la Vallée Dérangeante «A la manière d’un peintre et de son pinceau, je considère les technologies numériques, dont l’intelligence artificielle, comme un outil. C’est un sujet qui me passionne : je m’y plonge facilement et aisément. Les technologies font parties intégrantes de mes réflexions, et je les combine avec mes connaissances dans le domaine de l’architecture car à présent il ne s’agit plus uniquement de quatre murs, l’espace imaginaire étant aujourd’hui aussi important que la matérialité,» ajoute Laura Mannelli lorsque nous abordons son processus créatif et l’apport des nouvelles technologies. Elle explique également que l’architecture radicale des années 60, de Haus-Rucker-Co ou Archigram, peut être une origine et une préfiguration de la réalité virtuelle, soulignant que la «tech n’est finalement qu’une manière d’accéder à un propos, de faire passer un message voire une émotion. Elle n’est pas le point de départ mais peut apporter, par exemple, une réflexion sociétale».

La Vallée Dérangeante, présentée pour la première fois en mars dernier aux Rotondes dans le quartier Hollerich, à Luxembourg-Ville, s’inscrit dans un processus fastidieux, et amené à évoluer au fur et à mesure des visites et réactions des participants. «Comme il s’agit du premier prototype, nous avions besoin de cette première confrontation avec le public, qui participe de manière passive à l’œuvre. On retrouve une nouvelle fois le concept d’Intelligence Artificielle et plus précisément de Machine Learning,» explique Laura Mannelli. De son aveu, les gens furent intrigués par l’œuvre et n’ont que très peu eu la sensation d’y participer : ils ont nourri la Vallée Dérangeante sans même s’en rendre compte, tout comme le souhaitait l’artiste. Ils ont cependant pu ressentir cette sensation de rencontre entre les entités humaines et la machine : «une transe avec le corps matière et le corps virtuel, allant au-delà de la danse et de la performance artistique pour créer une véritable rencontre. Le résultat ?

Une fascination mutuelle».

Si la Vallée Dérangeante est amenée, comme sa machine numérique, à évoluer puis à s’émanciper, elle va également s’exporter dans d’autres villes, avec des représentations prévues aux quatre coins de l’Europe dans les mois à venir. Laura Mannelli souhaiterait également ajouter de nouveaux corps à l’œuvre, et lance ainsi un appel aux danseurs luxembourgeois. Enfin, l’artiste et architecte qui vient d’être invitée par Stilbé Schroeder, la curatrice de la sélection nationale du prix d’architecture Robert Schuman, compte bien continuer dans sa voie artistique faisant la part belle aux nouvelles technologies.

Elle travaille actuellement sur plusieurs projets mêlant réalité virtuelle et art sonore, destinés aux plus jeunes.

LE LUXEMBOURG DANS VOS ASSIETTES PAR MARGOT BOSLÉ

BOUNESCHLUPP

Egalement très appréciée en Sarre et en Lorraine, cette soupe de haricots verts est sans contestation possible l’un des plats les plus populaires au Luxembourg.

Emincez tout d’abord votre oignon, puis équeutez 300g d’haricots verts que vous couperez en 2-3 morceaux, selon leur taille. Coupez vos 2 pommes de terre en dés ainsi que tout autant de carottes en rondelles. Mélangez le tout dans votre casserole, en y ajoutant de l’huile d’olive. Y incorporer vos deux Mettwursts, pendant quelques minutes plus ajoutez l’eau. Salez, poivrez.

Après avoir laissé le tout cuire à feu doux pendant une bonne demi-heure, retirez les saucisses que vous coupez alors en morceaux. Mixez tout ce qui reste dans votre casserole mais faites attention à bien laisser quelques haricots verts, pommes de terres et carottes en entier !

JUDD MAT GAARDEBOUNEN

Qu’obtient-on lorsqu’on associe collet de porc fumé et fèves des marais ? Un plat traditionnel du Grand-Duché, mêlant terroir et tradition.

Tout d’abord, faites tremper vos 2kg de collet de porc fumé dans de l’eau durant plusieurs heures afin de dessaler le morceau de viande. Remplacez l’eau, puis faites cuire pendant une dizaine de minutes. Vient ensuite le temps d’ajouter vos légumes : 2 carottes, 2 oignons, 2 poireaux, ¼ de céleri rave, le tout agrémenté d’un bouquet garni et d’un bouillon de bœuf. Laissez cuire pendant 1h30. Dans une autre casserole, préparez vos 750g de fèves dans de l’eau salée : portez à ébullition, laissez cuire jusqu’à ce qu’elles soient tendres. Pour la sauce, préparez un roux, auquel vous ajoutez 2 ou 3 cuillères de votre bouillon obtenu lors de la cuisson de la viande, ajoutez les fèves. Et dégustez le tout, en coupant des tranches épaisses de collet !

KUDDELFLECK MAT TOMATENZOOSS

Au Luxembourg, les amateurs d’abats ne seront pas en reste : ce plat, à base de tripes, devrait les ravir.

Quant aux autres, passez à la recette suivante !

Débutez par couper 2 tranches de lard fumé en petits morceaux, que vous faites ensuite revenir avant de les saupoudrer de farine afin de créer un roux. Ajoutez-y un bouillon, un verre d’Elbling, une boite de concentré de tomate, puis faites bouillir le tout à feu moyen. Ajoutez-y la star du plat : 750g de tripes coupées en rectangles, puis agrémentez d’une feuille de laurier et de deux clous de girofle. Sales, poivrez, puis avant de servir, ajoutez une bonne cuillère de moutarde luxembourgeoise. Pour accompagner ce plat, optez pour des pommes de terre à l’eau !

KNIDDELEN

Toute la simplicité de la gastronomie luxembourgeoise illustrée dans cette recette de quenelles.

Mélangez 500g de farine, 4 œufs et 300ml de lait jusqu’à obtenir une pate homogène, puis salez la préparation. Ensuite, faites bouillir de l’eau, comme si vous alliez préparer un plat de pasta… mais plongez-y des quenelles de pâte de kniddelen. Une fois cuites, elles remontent à la surface. Egouttez les, et en parallèle, faites revenir du lard coupé en morceaux. Ajoutez ensuite vos kniddelen afin de les faire dorer. Pour finir, rajoutez-y des croutons de pain qui vous aurez préparés au préalable, ainsi que de la crème fraiche liquide ! Il ne reste plus qu’à se régaler.

FEIERSTÉNGSZALOT

Une délicieuse salade de viande à déguster au Grand-Duché, en entrée, ou en plat principal pour les plus gourmands.

Tout d’abord, faites cuire 600g de viande de bœuf destinée au pot-au-feu (de type jarret). Une fois celleci tiède, découpez-la en petits dés. Hachez 2 échalotes, et coupez les cornichons au vinaigre en tranches, ainsi deux œufs durs, et mélangez le tout avec votre viande préalablement découpée – et cuite ! Préparez par la suite votre vinaigrette : 10cl d’huile de tournesol, 5 de vinaigre de vin, ½ cuillère à café de moutarde luxembourgeoise, et ajoutez les herbes finement coupées : estragon, ciboulette, etc. Salez, poivrez. Laissez mariner le tout pendant une bonne heure, avant de déguster.

QUETSCHENTAART

Où comment terminer son repas en beauté, avec la traditionnelle tarte aux quetsches.

Pour votre tarte, commencez par réaliser une pâte brisée en mélangeant 125g de beurre et 50g de sucre jusqu’à ce que le tout blanchisse. Ajoutez un œuf et 250g de farine jusqu’à obtenir une belle de pâte que vous laissez reposer 30 minutes au frigo. Étalez le tout dans votre moule à tarte. Coupez vos quetsches, ou prunes, en quartiers et disposez-les en cercle sur votre tarte.

Il suffit alors de l’enfourner à feu moyen durant 1 heure.

Une fois la tarte démoulée, les plus gourmands pourront ajouter une gelée de cassis ou de groseilles sur les fruits cuits, voire même lui donner un peu de «peps» avec une cuillère à soupe d’eau-de-vie de prunes !

VINTAGE PAR-CI, VINTAGE PAR-LÀ PAR LOUISE NIEDZIELSKI

Jeans taille haute, chaussures à plateformes, bombers, couleurs fluo, gros imprimés à fleurs, photos polaroid, mobilier industriel, table en formica, ... cela vous parle ? Rien de plus normal, car depuis plusieurs saisons le vintage est partout et envahit littéralement notre quotidien. Car comme le disait Yves Saint Laurent, «la mode est un éternel recommencement».

A l’origine le terme anglo-saxon “Vintage” était utilisé pour désigner des alcools tels que whiskys ou portos, des millésimes anciens ayant gardé toutes leurs qualités malgré l’âge. Ensuite repris pour décrire les anciens vêtements de créateurs ou de marques prestigieuses, le terme “vintage” s’est étendu et qualifie à présent les pièces emblématiques des modes datant de plus de 20 ans.

De la mode, en passant par la décoration, les accessoires, mais aussi dans l’électro-ménager, l’électronique et l’automobile, le vintage est la tendance “in” du moment.

Aujourd’hui, il est de bon goût d’écouter des morceaux de musiques datant de quelques décennies sur son tourne-disque, c’est tendance de troquer son smartphone contre un appareil photo argentique pour prendre des photos et c’est extrêmement cool de se déplacer en patins à roulettes ! After sharing his expertise at the Space Forum last May in Luxembourg, Zee Zheng, the CEO of SpaceChain, gave some of his time to BEAST Magazine, notably discussing how the blockchain technology could accelerate the development of the new space economy.

What is the main activity of SpaceChain?

How would you describe your company’s mission?

At SpaceChain we design open-source hardware and software to be deployed as operational space nodes in low earth orbit. We have successfully launched two nodes into space and completed the first space-based multisignature transaction on the Qtum blockchain.

Our mission is to provide an open-source platform for innovators around the world to build projects that fit the blockchain-based philosophy of decentralization and trustless operations to accelerate the development of the new space economy.

How did your interest for blockchain begin?

Could you explain why and how « the combination of space and blockchain technologies will broaden the frontier of our future economy »?

I first heard about Bitcoin around 2013 when one of my crazy uncles was talking about moving to Arizona to mine Bitcoin. Our family lost touch with him ever since. I started to learn about blockchain in 2015.

One of my friends in Silicon Valley told me about ETH and I immediately believed it is possibly one of the most innovative platforms. I was also one of the early participants for DAO. Since then I have remained active in the blockchain community.

Historically, most effort in space have been government sponsored or controlled by a single corporate entity, making space exploration very closed off and niche.

In addition, many private investors are hesitant about investing in space businesses because of its costly infrastructure and long timelines.

#Science | Space And while commercialized space projects have braved through all the challenges, they are still tied to conventional economic models that may hamper the type of development that we’ve seen in other data and hardware systems. All of these issues hinder space exploration and technology innovation. SpaceChain is pushing for a world where developers can openly innovate with spacebased technology at very low costs creating things that we have not yet imagined.

What is the aim of the « SpaceChain » Node that your company launched in the space on October 25, 2018?

Our second space node that was launched in October 2018 is a proof of concept platform for testing transactions and hardware capabilities.

Through the SpaceChain OS system, each node can host multiple applications secured by a blockchainsupported sandbox.

What are the latest progress / innovation of SpaceChain?

Recently SpaceChain has expanded its operations to the United Kingdom to leverage Europe’s advanced space technologies and to drive economic development through SpaceChain’s satellite infrastructure and blockchain technology.

SpaceChain UK Limited will be based in Harwell, Oxfordshire at the Satellite Applications Catapult (SAC), an independent innovation and technology company created by Innovate UK. SpaceChain has already partnered with several UK-based companies, including: Open Cosmos, a microsatellite platform designed to manage the process of bringing satellite services to businesses; NanoAvionics, a nanosatellite mission integrator that delivers new generation satellite buses and propulsion systems; and Alba Orbital, a pioneer in the development of PocketQube satellites.

As for hardware and software, our team completed the first space-based multi signature Qtum transaction earlier this year and we continue to develop our technology stack. We are working on integrating new blockchains with our operating system and we are planning our next launch.

How do you see the future of SpaceChain?

What are your ambitions for the years to come?

Satellites in space traditionally have a single owner and perform a single function. This is very stifling from a business perspective. However, the use of blockchain technology with the revolutionary SpaceChain OS changes this.

Take for example your smartphone. It ships with a preinstalled OS that enables all kinds of applications to run.

The smart phone also has a sandbox that keeps all the applications separated from one another.

Similarly, SpaceChain has created smart hardware that can be installed onto satellites with SpaceChain OS. The universal space OS converts single-operator satellites into multi-tenant ones, while the blockchain provides a highly secure sandbox between multiple space applications. That way, users will be able to develop different types of spacebased applications on a single satellite, maximizing the efficiency from this expensive resource.

SpaceChain OS also enables compatibility between SpaceChain’s hardware and various applications that developers are developing and/or using. It acts as a bridge that lets both participants in the space arena and SpaceChain “speak” to each other in order to advance to the next stage. Developers can create applications using the environment provided by SpaceChain OS, as it greatly lowers the difficulty of developing space applications while putting the resources, i.e. infrastructure, to best use.

Best of all, this network is open-source. This means anyone, from an aerospace university student to a software developer, can write an application and load it onto a SpaceChain satellite network. This system of operation is more affordable compared to a decade ago where a single entity had to buy, operate and launch the entire satellite into space in order to develop space applications.

The economics of this offers an ideal environment for many new use cases and endless possibilities.

Finally, how does the future look in the field of space and blockchain?

True advancements can only come from a community comprised of software and hardware developers, investors, space tech enthusiasts and professionals. Together on SpaceChain’s decentralized platform, they can contribute to the space industry. SpaceChain’s vision has always been that of open access and collaboration to foster the development of an entire ecosystem that would connect millions of businesses, developers and consumers, as well as open up new businesses and socio-economic models that seemed impossible before.

LUXEMBOURG AT THE FOREFRONT OF THE NEWSPACE DYNAMIC

Space industry specialists made the trip from all over Europe and beyond to attend the third edition of the Space Forum, a two-day event held in Luxembourg on May 21st and 22nd, aimed at promoting exchanges and triggering debates between all the active forces of the sector.

GovSatCom for Defence and Security applications After having offered his welcome words to the participants, Paul Wells, Vice President & Chief Commercial Officer of GovSat, presented the activities of his organization, a public-private venture owned

by SES and the Luxembourg State. «In a harsh threat environment, our EU and NATO partners are exposed to increasing signal jamming, cyber-attacks and physical attacks», he said. «Our mission is to support our users in need of secure long range communications.»

To achieve this objective, GovSat provides their partners with X-band mission beam capacity, terminal supply, integration and installation, and local maintenance and support. And all this is orchestrated from Luxembourg, «a senior provider in terms of satellite operations».

Open access to space: a view from Europe and China Acting as Master of Ceremony for the second chapter of Space Forum 2019, Jean-Jacques Dordain, former Director-General of ESA and member of the advisory board of SpaceResources.lu, underlined that «if defense is still the main driver for space activities, changes are being brought on by new players who are introducing a new culture and new standards of cost and time.»

He added that «space is nevertheless the only place where it is still possible to collect and spread data everywhere.»

He then passed the floor to Professor Ji Wu, former Director of the Chinese National Space Science Center.

Pr. Ji Wu told the audience that China had to develop its presence in space with its own capabilities, without any support from the US or Russia. «We have some capabilities in the space field, funded by the government, but this is not enough», he added. However, China has started in 2015 to issue some regulations to open the space market to private actors. The country has 8 million internet users who may be potential customers for the space industry. «NewSpace is an area that venture capitalists are targeting now», said Pr. Ji Wu. «This gives space start-ups opportunities to take off and develop.»

The next presentation was given by Dr. Shufan Wu, Chair Professor and Executive Dean of School of Aeronautics and Astronautics at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. He recalled that, with the construction and launch of with micro and nano satellites, the NewSpace wave had been started and was now booming. «In China, more and more players are joining the micro and nano satellite club, both universities and commercial companies», said Dr. Shufan Wu. Since 2015, the commercial Chinese space sector has in fact become more and more active. «Globally speaking», Dr. Shufan Wu added, «China is still in its start-up phase with regard to the micro and nano satellites industry and the development of space-related commercial products and services. But a very rapid and vigorous expansion in these fields is foreseen in the next decade.»

Having heard the Chines points of view, Jean-Jacques Dordain handed the floor to Jean-Yves Le Gall, President of the Centre National d’Etudes Spatiales (CNES), the French space agency.

According to Mr. Le Gall, current developments in the space sector will be accentuated with the emergence of new paradigms in the global landscape. In addition to the traditional US supremacy, China and India are advancing rapidly, as evidenced by the record number of Chinese launches and India’s ambitions for human spaceflight.

«Today, there are more than 60 space agencies around the world», noted the president of CNES, « and there is no sign of a lack of commercial competition.» This is due to a number of factors: the commercial ambitions of national strategies, the NewSpace dynamic that is stimulating the entire industry, whether launchers, satellites or applications, and a rapidly changing satellite market. To address this situation, CNES is running a «complete transformation to become a modern space agency capable of supporting the space ecosystem.»

«From a British perspective, NewSpace is small: with no launcher, we are seen as the hitchhikers of the galaxy», said humorously Lord David Willetts, former UK Minister for Universities & Science. More seriously, he added that NewSpace meant «private funding and investments» and «quick and lean» for the British. «The main ingredient of NewSpace is how much data it will produce», he said.

«The debate is who owns the data, who can use them and under what conditions». When asked about the role of regulation, he answered «we need a regulative regime that supports and enables the development of launch activities» and that «ESA could play a key role in developing such a regulatory framework».

The next speaker was Simonetta Di Pippo, Director of the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA), who provided the UN perspective on open access to space. Ms. Di Pippo explained that the UN have developed a «2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development» in order to address societal challenges that need to be overcome in the form of 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with 169 associated specific targets. Research found that 65 of the 169 SDG indicators are reliant on the use of space. In light of that, the UNOOSA is missioned to provide access to space-data and information and build capacity to use such data to accelerate sustainable development. The Office also facilitates member states in the development of NewSpace policy.

In the context of a scarcity of natural resources on Earth, Bertrand Baratte, Director of Space Activity for Air Liquide, explained to the participants how he world leading company in gas services intended to play a prominent role in the exploitation of new extra-terrestrial resources. The set of solutions that Air Liquide is working on ranges from spacecraft propellants through inflatable and collapsible tanks to technologies for processing gases across the mining value chain. «Our ambition is to become an enabler for the open space journey», said Bertrand Baratte.

Big Data and the business of Space data Olivier Lemaire, Partner at EY, acted as moderator on May 22nd. He recalled how Luxembourg had succeeded in adapting to changing economies during the past decades, from agriculture to steel, finance, digital and now space.

«In the last five years», he said, «the country has been able to create a real ecosystem around the space industry». Data extracted from space activities are essential for industries as diverse as farming, maritime transportation and real estate but also for strategic areas such as electricity, oil and gas.

Olivier Lemaire then handed the floor to Arthur Sauzay, space policy expert at Institut Montaigne. He is the author of a report for Institut Montaigne published in December 2017 called Space: Will Europe strike back? «If data had mass, Earth would be a black hole», he joked, meaning that, for transporting worldwide the gigantic quantities of data produced and collected on Earth, we needed to use the increased capabilities offered by space systems. But soon, a large portion of the data will originate from space itself.

«What is the situation today?», he asked. «The two main trends in the space business are Internet constellations and Earth Observation». But Internet satellite networks are still facing technical issues, regulation problems need to be addressed and business models must still be defined.

As regards EO, services are still offered by a small number of operators financed by governments and public means.

Efforts must be made to open the EO activity to the private sector.

Marc Serres, CEO of the Luxembourg Space Agency, firstly reviewed the missions and objectives of the LSA, emphasizing on the development of the Luxembourg space ecosystem and synergies with businesses and organizations outside the space sector. Marc Serres has also announced the creation of the LSA Data Center. The LSA Data Center has been created to support businesses in Luxembourg with reliable, fast and intuitive access to data streams from the European Copernicus Earth Observation programme. «This initiative of the LSA is just a first step to facilitate access to space data with the aim to stimulate new services provided

by Luxembourg as a hub for commercial space in Europe», said Marc Serres. The LSA Data Center provides users with search and download access to a fully indexed and referenced, real-time geo-catalogue, set up with products from the Copernicus Sentinel 1 and 2 satellite constellations.

This information is provided on a full, free and open access basis.

Omar Valdes, Market Development Officer at the European GNSS Agency (GSA), then took the floor to demonstrate the value of Galileo as a multipurpose source of spacegenerated Big Data. Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) is a source of valuable space generated data that can benefit from the technologies associated to Big Data and computing. «Galileo in particular can be valuable to making such solutions more secure by improving the quality and reliability of the collected data», said Omar Valdes.

Big Data-related GNSS applications that can be improved by using Galileo include location-based services (smartphones producing geo-tagged pictures, Augmented Reality games), IoT, Road (fleet tracking, connected vehicles in general), time stamping of financial transactions and scientific applications.

Olivier Lemaire then introduced the next speaker, Dr Jason Maroothynaden, a Business Broker from ESA’s Business Applications Team, a division that provides ESA’s support for the commercialization of satellite applications and space-using industry. He told the public that ESA was not only involved in space research and technology.

The agency is also a partner, broker, mediator, facilitator and enabler for the industry. «From international transport to rural education, ESA Business Applications have enabled data from satellites to transform businesses on Earth. We have already invested €200m in launching innovative services in over 500 businesses», said Jason Maroothynaden. «Partnerships with selected investors and lenders leverages more finance into ESA-supported companies and ensures successful commercialization», he added.

The last speaker of the conference was Carlos LopezMartinez, Head of Remote Sensing and Natural Resources Modelling Group at the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST). «Society is nowadays facing unprecedented challenges for food and water security, ecosystem sustainability and resilience to major natural disasters», said Carlos Lopez-Martinez. «Remote Sensing and Earth Observations are necessary not only to monitor, to report and to model the climate change and to address these great societal challenges, but also to contribute to their solution», he added. The vision of the Remote Sensing and Natural Resources Modelling group is to conduct and to offer research and innovation of excellence, while contributing to the Luxembourg and European economies, the environment sustainability and the human welfare. This contribution is centered on the combination and exploitation of remote sensing information obtained by multiple and complementary sensors installed on spaceborne and airborne platforms, together with in-situ monitoring. «Our research projects are used in areas such as natural disasters like floods and droughts, precision agriculture, land surface processes, vegetation water cycle, and maritime transportation», he concluded.

SPACE ACTIVITIES TO ACHIEVE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS

Simonetta Di Pippo, Director of the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA), tells us more about the evolution of the space industry and discusses its impact on the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.

How – and why – have outer space activities developed so much in the last years? Which specific technologies notably allowed this development?

In the last decades, our world – and especially the space sector – has experienced vast changes.

Cheaper launching facilities and options, increasingly compact technology that makes it possible to pack vast potential into smaller devices, a higher appetite for space exploration worldwide, in combination with economic growth and rapid innovation, have led to a boom in the space sector. New actors, including private companies, are increasingly participating in space activities, with more and more ambitious targets.

The use of space technologies in our everyday life is also constantly increasing. Nowadays, there is a massive use of space data on Earth – mobile phones, internet, GNSS devices and TV are possible only thanks to space technologies. This increasing range and volume of uses encourages the development of ever smaller satellites, cheaper and easier to launch, and more and more private companies are investing in developing these technologies.

Remote sensing applications are also rapidly evolving, as are their uses: for example, Earth observation satellites provide us with increasingly more accurate and more detailed images, which open up new ways to use space-related data, in particular for sustainable development, for example, chiefly, in the fight against climate change.

UNOOSA often advocates for greater use of space for sustainable development.

How can space actually help building a more sustainable economy?

Space technologies and data are fundamental for achieving the SDGs: they provide real-time, homogenous information from any location, including remote areas, upon which strategic policymaking decisions can be based; and they are essential for monitoring progress against the SDGs. A recent study conducted by UNOOSA and the European Global Navigation Satellite Systems Agency (GSA) found that the use of space European Global Navigation Satellite Systems (EGNSS) and Copernicus applications deliver direct benefits to almost 40 per cent of the 169 targets of the SDGs. If we were to add telecommunications, which are dependent on space, this percentage would increase substantially.

Monitoring climate change and pollution, supporting sustainable agriculture, increasing productivity and promoting industrialization through advancements in research and technology, bringing education to remote areas, supporting the transition to clean energy, improving the monitoring and management of water resources and enabling smart cities and transportation are only a few of many ways in which space activities support the SDGs. Space supports all the SDGs, and the work of UNOOSA touches on all of the Goals. I can highlight in particular, as examples, our work on SDGs 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 11 and 17.

For instance, on SDG 4, quality education, UNOOSA offers fellowships on space-related topics; provides advisory services to space agencies and research institutions in developing countries to expand their knowledge of space applications; organizes international conferences and workshops on space technologies; and provides online educational resources and directories of educational opportunities on space topics.

On SDG 5, gender equality, UNOOSA works to increase access and opportunities for women in the space and STEM sectors through the Space4Women project. The project promotes a global “Space4Women Champions” network, linking young women with positive female role models who can advise and guide them throughout their career journey from education to occupation in STEM sectors.

On SDG 6, clean water and sanitation, UNOOSA works with the Prince Sultan Bin Abdulaziz International Prize for Water (PSIPW) to collaborate on promoting the use of space-based technology for increased access to water. Together with PSIPW, in 2018 UNOOSA launched the Space4Water Portal. which provides information on projects, initiatives, community portals, training material, conferences and publications in the space and water sectors and on their linkages.

The information is categorized and shared publicly in a user-friendly format, and readers are invited to submit guest articles. The portal is a one-stop shop that enables developing countries in particular to expand and better leverage their range of space-related tools to support the management of water resources.

On SDGs 8 and 9, decent work and economic growth and industry, innovation and infrastructure, space can bring significant benefits through the expanding space economy, which promotes economic growth and quality employment worldwide, as well as fostering technological advances that end up benefiting all sectors of the economy. UNOOSA has partnered with Bocconi University in Milan, and in particular with the Space Economy Evolution Lab (SEE) of the SDA Bocconi School of Management, to explore the potential of the space economy through research and education. This collaboration will include academic courses for training public employees, particularly those in developing countries, on topics related to the space economy. The courses will be provided by SDA Bocconi with the support of UNOOSA. On SDG 11, sustainable cities and communities, include increasing resilience to disasters. Risk reduction and disaster response, as well as the mapping of diseases and public health emergencies, play a vital role in improving living conditions and the resilience of communities on Earth. By helping developing countries gain access to space-related data for disaster reduction and response, the UN-SPIDER program provides countries with access to the instruments needed to achieve this goal.

On SDG 17, partnerships for the goals, UNOOSA is continuously building innovative partnerships with a number of actors, including governments, space agencies, private sector companies and research institutions, to ensure that people in all countries can access the benefits of space.

Can you tell us more about the collaboration with space agencies from around the world, but also with governments?

UNOOSA works closely with United Nations Member States to foster the peaceful use of outer space, support capacity building and develop national space infrastructures, regulation, research and technology. Through the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS) and its two subcommittees, UNOOSA provides all member states with a unique platform to build cooperation in outer space on topics ranging from space debris mitigation to space traffic management and space exploration projects.

By leveraging the knowledge and abilities of various partners, the Office aims to bring the benefits of space to everyone, everywhere. This often happens through triangular approaches, as under the Access for Space for All Initiative. Through this initiative, UNOOSA helps space-faring nations support non-space faring nations in developing their space technology and research.

The KiboCUBE project, a collaboration between UNOOSA and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), is an example of such a collaboration. KiboCUBE enables developing countries to launch a satellite from JAXA’s module on the International Space Station (ISS) free of cost. This is the project that made it possible for Kenya to develop and deploy their first satellite, and Kenya will soon be joined by other winners of this incredible opportunity.

As another example of our work with space agencies, in partnership with the China Manned Space Agency, UNOOSA provides provide institutions from Member States, in particular countries with limited or no space capabilities, with the opportunity to fly experiments onboard the China Space Station, which is expected to be operational by 2022. The collaboration aims to build the capacity to use human space flight technologies, including facilities and resources from China’s human spaceflight program, and promote awareness of the benefits of utilizing human space technology and its applications. The year 2018 saw the first announcement of opportunity, for which 42 applications for space experiments on board the China Space Station were received.

We also work directly with governments to increase their capacity to leverage space technology for disaster risk reduction: for example, we provide technical advisory and institutional strengthening missions to member states to deliver training programs and build capacity on topics such as how to prepare maps of drought indicators, and how to use space technology in the fight against both natural and human-made calamities such as floods, landslides and earthquakes.

UNOOSA is also involved in several education projects aiming at supporting young talents.

How important is it for space agencies to promote their activities to students but also to the general population?

Raising awareness on space activities among youth is a very important mission for UNOOSA. The Office achieves this by providing young talents with research opportunities, as well as by engaging the youth on determining the future course of space exploration and international cooperation in space.

The DropTES project, which started in 2013, is an example of the first category of projects: it offers research teams the opportunity to conduct microgravity experiments at the Bremen Drop Tower in Germany. These experiments, which consist of four drops or catapult launches, can build capacity for both hardware and human space missions.

The Space for Youth Competition launched by the Office in 2019 in response to the Youth 2030 Agenda is an example of the second category of initiatives to engage youth with the space sector and in shaping its future. The competition called for young people to make concrete suggestions on how space could contribute to the SDGs, through examples in their communities, and has attracted submissions from young people all over the world. Winning submissions will be featured at COPUOS, providing young winners with a unique global platform to share their ideas.

Space exploration is by nature a long-term, inter-generational pursuit. At UNOOSA, we believe that involving youth in determining the future direction of space policy and exploration is essential for building a better future for humanity beyond the timeline of present leaders.

Luxembourg is a well-established space actor, with a long legacy of conducting pioneering space activities. As a member of the UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Space, Luxembourg works with the entire space community in contributing to the ongoing and dynamic deliberations at the UN level across a whole range of new developments in space policy.

At UNOOSA, our mission is to advance international cooperation in space affairs.

Working across the political, legal and technical aspects of such a mission, the chance to collaborate closely with Luxembourg is a welcome opportunity to support these activities as we work to bring the benefits of space to more and more people around the world.

UNOOSA also has an agreement with Asteroid Day Foundation, an awareness and educational program registered in Luxembourg. This Day, declared through a resolution of the United Nations General Assembly, is celebrated each year on 30 June to commemorate the largest asteroid impact recorded in recent history, when, on 30 June 1908, a near-Earth Object exploded over Tunguska in Siberia, flattening 2,000 square kilometers of forest. This International Day serves as a reminder of the danger posed by asteroids and as a tool to raise awareness of the need for international cooperation to address this challenge.

Another important step in the next decades will be the continuous commercialization of Low-Earth-Orbit (LEO), which will open space to the private sector and thereby make it accessible to a much broader public.

UNOOSA will continue its work fostering global cooperation and supporting the UN Member States in their efforts to leverage the benefits of space for all humankind. We believe that the Access to Space 4 All in particular sets the basis for our work in the coming decade: as technologies advance rapidly, making it possible to achieve new frontiers in space exploration, it is particularly important to ensure that the increasing benefits of space reach people everywhere, and not just in those countries that have the means for conducting space exploration. UNOOSA is uniquely placed for bridging the gap between space nations and non-space or emerging space nations and ensuring that the benefits of space reach all of humankind.

The achievement of the SDG is of course the overarching goal for all United Nations offices and agencies in the coming decade: through all the initiatives and partnerships we have built and are continuing to build, we are confident that more and more countries will be able to fully leverage the incredible potential of space technologies and research to make a concrete difference in their path toward the 2030 Goals.

Looking at the future, how will space look like in 2030?

In the coming decades, a vast number of impressive space-related endeavors are planned. Both national space agencies and private companies have voiced plans to return humanity to the Moon – and even bring the first humans to Mars. Many of these programs rely heavily on global partnerships, a feature that will only increase in the future, as the complexity and cost of planned projects keep growing. International collaborations, such as the Jams Webb Space telescope or the Lunar Orbital Platform-Gateway, could contribute greatly to an expanded knowledge of space by 2030.

SOMMES-NOUS SEULS DANS L’UNIVERS ?

2000 observations d’ovnis ont été enregistrées, 650 ont été étudiées, 500 restent inexpliquées.

NUIT DU 24/25 FÉVRIER 1942 : Bataille de Los Angeles A Los Angeles, en Californie, de nombreux objets non-identifiés de différentes formes et tailles survolent le ciel. Les autorités pensent tout d’abord qu’il s’agit d’une attaque de l’aviation japonaise comme à Pearl Harbor. Néanmoins, à la fin de la guerre les japonais annoncent qu’ils n’ont jamais envoyé de force aérienne au-dessus de la cité des anges.

24 JUIN 1947 : Premier débat sur les ovnis Le phénomène « ovni » intéresse le grand public à la suite du témoignage médiatisé d’un homme d’affaires américain, Kenneth Arnold. Il raconte le phénomène qu’il a observé alors qu’il voyageait à bord de son avion privé. Il dit avoir vu 9 objets dans le ciel de la forme d’une soucoupe, très rapide et très brillante. Cette affaire a engendré de nombreux autres témoignages similaires aux Etats-Unis, mais aussi dans d’autres pays.

4 JUILLET 1947 : Affaire de Roswell Il s’agit d’un évènement majeur en ufologie. William Brazel, un fermier vivant prés de Roswell au Nouveau-Mexique (Etats-Unis) découvre des débris étranges éparpillés sur ses terres. Il s’agirait d’une épave d’un ovni extraterrestre. Cependant le gouvernement américain lui affirme qu’il est question de l’écrasement d’un ballon sonde. L’origine des débris n’a jamais été officiellement révélée.

1954 : Observation d’Antananarivo L’observation d’ovnis la plus énigmatique à Antananarivo, ville de Madagascar, ayant été vue par une centaine de témoins. Une boule de « lumière verte » qui n’émet aucun bruit est observée tombant du ciel avant de disparaître derrière une colline.

Suite à ça, des pannes d’électricité ont eu lieu dans les zones survolées. Cette affaire motiva, quelques années plus tard, Charles de Gaulle à envisager la création d’un organisme officiel d’étude des Ovni. Le GEPAN sera créé en 1977.

NUIT DU 21/22 AOÛT 1955 : Rencontre de Kelly-Hopkinsville Considérée comme un des grands classiques de l’ufologie, la rencontre de « KellyHopkinsville » est d’une hypothétique « attaque » d’extraterrestres dans une ferme familiale dans l’état du Kentucky (Etats-Unis). Un objet métallique et brillant ainsi que des « petites créatures lumineuses » ont été observés durant plusieurs heures. Les témoins présents sur place essayèrent de les éliminer en vain à l’aide d’un fusil mais malgré ça les créatures continuaient de « flotter ».

1974 : Programme Viking Premières tentatives de recherche d’indices sur la vie extraterrestre par les sondes du programme Viking (programme spatial NASA qui a posé les premiers engins américains sur le sol de la planète Mars).

Depuis le début de notre civilisation, une question subsiste : « Sommes-nous seuls dans l’univers ? ». Elle passionne – voire obsède – un grand nombre de scientifiques et les recherches sur la vie extraterrestre ne cessent d’évoluer grâce aux progrès dans les domaines des sciences et de la technologie.

L’histoire de l’ufologie (étude des ovnis et des phénomènes associés) compte une multitude de témoignages rapportant des rencontres avec des êtres dits «extraterrestres». BEAST se penche sur quelques dates clés.

1961 : Mr & Mrs Hill Betty et Barney Hill sont un couple d’américains qui affirme avoir été enlevé par des extraterrestres. Il s’agit du premier cas de ce genre. Le couple a affirmé avoir vu des créatures humanoïdes difformes de petite taille de couleur grise, à la fenêtre d’un objet de forme circulaire. Après quoi ils ne se souvenaient plus des deux heures suivantes. Aussi, ils découvrirent des griffures anormales sur leurs chaussures et ressentirent de vives douleurs physiques.

11 NOVEMBRE 1979 : Incident de Manises Pour la première fois dans l’histoire aérienne, un vol commercial a dû effectuer un atterrissage d’urgence suite à la présence d’un objet volant non identifié sur l’aéroport de Manises, en Espagne. Car ni le contrôle aérien, ni le centre de contrôle et ni même les radars militaires ne pouvaient donner d’explications. A ce jour l’incident reste inexpliqué.

1989-1990 : Vague Belge d’ovnis Des milliers d’observations d’ovnis ont été recensés durant cette période en Belgique.

La plupart des témoignages expriment la présence d’un appareil volant dans le ciel de forme triangulaire avec 3 phares aux extrémités du triangle et un phare rouge au centre.

6 OCTOBRE 1995 : Découverte de la première planète extrasolaire Un tournant dans l’évolution des idées en matière de formation planétaire avec la découverte de la première planète extrasolaire par deux astronomes, Michel Mayor et Didier Queloz, suite à des observations réalisées à l’observatoire de Haute-Provence grâce à la méthode des vitesses radiales (vitesse d’un objet mesurée dans la direction du rayon vers ou depuis le point d’observation).

NOVEMBRE 2004 : Incident du Nimitz L’incident s’est produit le long des côtes de San Diego. Le personnel de la marine américaine à bord du porte-avions USS Nimitz ainsi que des avions de chasses ont observé un objet mystérieux circuler dans le ciel pendant plusieurs heures. L’incident a été officiellement confirmé en 2017 par le département de la défense des Etats-Unis grâce à une vidéo infrarouge ayant enregistré « l’objet ».

19 OCTOBRE 2017 : Oumuamua Il s’agit du premier objet interstellaire jamais détecté dans notre système solaire. Tout d’abord pris pour une comète, puis pour un astéroïde, ses caractéristiques et son comportement inhabituel relancent le débat sur sa vraie nature. Ainsi, des chercheurs émettent l’hypothèse qu’il pourrait avoir été fabriqué par une civilisation extraterrestre.

Au 2 août 2018, 3815 planètes extrasolaires ont été confirmées.

PAS D’INTELLIGENCE ARTIFICIELLE SANS INTELLIGENCE – ET INTERVENTION – HUMAINE De passage au Luxembourg, et plus particulièrement à ICT Spring, l’événement tech et web faisant la part belle aux nouvelles technologies et notamment à l’Intelligence Artificielle, Luc Julia a accordé de son temps à BEAST. Le créateur de Siri, aujourd’hui Vice President of Innovation, Strategy & Innovation Center au sein de Samsung Electronics, est aussi l’auteur du bestseller «L’Intelligence Artificielle n’existe pas». Alors, qu’en est-il de ce qu’on appelle vulgairement l’IA et de son impact sur les sociétés et dans la vie quotidienne ?

«Cette fameuse intelligence artificielle dont nous entendons parler dans tous les médias aux quatre coins du monde n’existe pas, tout simplement. Il est facile de dire que les métiers vont se transformer, voire être remplacés. Nous sommes dans le sensationnel… mais cette Intelligence Artificielle qu’on ne contrôlerait pas et qui prendrait le dessus n’existe pas. L’humain reste en contrôle,» débute Luc Julia, répondant au soit disant avènement de l’IA qui se traduit parfois même par la peur des collaborateurs. Pour l’expert, tout ce qui provient des applications d’IA ou Machine Learning résulte des données, informations et règles ajoutées par l’Humain : «Nous sommes bien loin d’Hollywood et des films de science-fiction produits depuis les années 80. Les technologies que l’on utilise aujourd’hui, et qui en sont encore à leurs balbutiements, suivent simplement les règles des années précédentes. Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning ou encore Deep Learning apprennent sur une quantité massive de données». Il précise ainsi qu’il ne s’agit que d’une reconnaissance de data, ne faisant preuve d’aucune inventivité ou esprit créatif : les robots et machines suivent les règles définies et apprennent d’exemples concrets. En d’autres termes, l’Humain, via les données qu’il génère et les règles qu’il met en place mais aussi par ses comportements, nourrit ce qu’on appelle vulgairement l’IA.

Quelle IA pour reproduire la créativité de l’humain ?

Contrairement à de nombreux acteurs du secteur et experts en nouvelles technologies, le créateur de Siri ne distingue pas les IA faible et forte. Selon Luc Julia, cette dernière n’a pas lieu d’être : «Aujourd’hui, les scientifiques ne connaissent et ne comprennent que 20 à 40% de notre cerveau, il est dès lors impossible de répliquer un humain, et donc de créer ce que certains désignent comme une intelligence artificielle forte, ou même une intelligence indépendante quelle qu’elle soit». De manière très simple et directe, Luc Julia décrit l’intelligence en un seul et unique terme : innovation. «Il s’agit de créer quelque chose qui n’existe pas, de casser les règles, ce que ces intelligences artificielles ne seront jamais en mesure de faire ! Du moins, pas avec les méthodes et techniques actuelles, se basant sur les maths et les statistiques.

Nous pourrons potentiellement en rediscuter lorsque la biophysique et la biologie seront intégrées au processus et concept dit d’intelligence artificielle, afin d’imiter le cerveau humain et de répliquer ses capacités de création,» poursuit l’expert. A l’heure actuelle, il s’interroge sur le comportement d’un véhicule autonome au rondpoint de l’Etoile à Paris, où les règles de conduite ne sont qu’illusion et à l’approche duquel chaque conducteur doit prendre une décision, des initiatives – voire des risques – afin de circuler. Pour Luc Julia, une voiture autonome de niveau 5 n’y parviendrait pas, car il est impossible d’imaginer tous les scénarios possibles, trop de véhicules et d’autres paramètres entrant en compte.

Luc Julia reconnait la puissance des applications d’IA et leurs avantages dans de nombreux secteurs et notamment dans les transports. Une voiture autonome de niveau 3 ou 4 pourra permettre de transporter leurs utilisateurs le long de routes classiques. Ces solutions confèrent plusieurs avantages, entre la réduction de stress et la possibilité de maximiser la valeur du temps passé dans son véhicule. Des challenges importants se dressent encore face à ces «services», avec en tête le développement de Smart Cities accompagnées d’un réseau routier totalement redesigné. C’est aussi le cas de la médecine, avec toute la multitude de données et d’informations pouvant être extraites du corps du patient. «L’IA que je défends et qui se base sur les mathématiques, permettra la génération de statistiques intéressantes et clés dans le traitement de maladies, et même dans la prévention de celles-ci. On retrouve d’ores-et-déjà des banques de données concernant les cancers du sein, on utilise les données d’imagerie, etc,» ajoute Luc Julia. Il poursuit : «l’analyse de telles données permettra aux médecins, tout aussi bons qu’ils soient, de détecter plus rapidement des maladies ou futurs symptômes».

Il évoque également les «gadgets» de la vie de tous les jours, avec des objets – et notamment les smartphones – qui assistent leurs utilisateurs et facilitent leur quotidien.

Pour Luc Julia qui vit dans une maison intelligente depuis près de 20 ans, il est aujourd’hui inconcevable de descendre manuellement les stores et volets à son domicile… Ces applications, entre Big Data, Intelligence Artificielle et Internet des Objets représentent aujourd’hui un gain de temps considérable et pourraient, ironiquement, favoriser les interactions sociales.

Intégrer l’Intelligence Artificielle à ses process Dans le cadre du développement et de l’utilisation de tels services, Luc Julia préconise le concept de «Smart Data» plutôt que celui de «Big Data». «Mathématiques et statistiques requièrent beaucoup d’énergie. Les données sont centralisées dans des datacentres qui doivent être refroidis et consomment énormément. En résumé, une énergie démente est nécessaire… Il s’agit d’une aberration technologique. Dès lors, dans cette tentative d’imiter le cerveau humain, essayons d’utiliser moins de données, pour remplacer le Big Data par un Small Data qui serait moins énergivore,» explique l’expert tech.

Luc Julia, dans l’approche de ces nouvelles technologies, conseille de se rapprocher de véritables experts dans les domaines concernés, avec des professionnels maîtrisant ces innovations et comprenant le métier et le secteur dans lequel évolue le client. Il ajoute : «Puis, il est nécessaire de recruter un Data Science au sein même des équipes : les données, les chiffres et leurs analyses ne mentent pas.

Ils pourront alors modéliser les concepts, qui pourront à ce moment être transcrits dans un algorithme par des développeurs. Il faut également garder en tête que l’IA ne va pas transformer le métier, mais qu’elle vise aujourd’hui à assister et à améliorer les performances et l’efficacité».

Quant à la communication auprès des équipes – et postures – à adopter dans l’intégration de ces nouvelles technologies, Luc Julia préconise un dialogue franc sur l’évolution probable des tâches : «les collaborateurs ne vont pas être remplacés, il est important de le leur rappeler.

La transformation de certaines tâches redondantes et répétitives donnera l’opportunité d’ajouter une nouvelle valeur au(x) service(s)». Rappelons également que 85% des métiers de 2035 n’existent pas à l’heure actuelle et que par le passé, plusieurs industries, notamment en Allemagne, en prenant le pari de la robotisation (de certaines tâches), ont pu conserver les places de leaders avec une forte création d’emplois et un taux de chômage faible, quand d’autres n’ont que très peu agi, pour aujourd’hui se retrouver à la traîne…

EMOTIONS: THE NEXT AI MILESTONE

Emotions and «Artificial Intelligence», at a first glance, are two concepts worlds apart. AI is a set of mathematical and statistical techniques giving computers the ability to perform logical tasks while emotions can be defined as everything but a logical thing. Looking at a different angle and with the latest research in these fields, this article aims at exploring the unexpected commonalities between emotions and AI. A state of consciousness Emotion is an affective state of consciousness where joy, sorrow, fear, hate, or many others, is experienced. Emotion as a state of consciousness is therefore profoundly Human, making it very difficult for machines to actually reproduce it.

At least for now.

Nevertheless, if we break down this state of consciousness we can identify three distinct parts: the initial state of the person (happy, angry, calm, excited etc.), the external input (taste, sight, touch, smell, or sound input) which causes the change of state, and the specific responses whether there are conscious or unconscious (tone of voice, face change, body language etc.).

In theory, an emotion is just a complex biological algorithm built over millions of years. It is then theoretically possible to reverse-engineer this algorithm and build an AI. Emotion AI companies and scientists are already working on this topic.

Interpretation and Emotional Intelligence Emotional Intelligence is the capability of individuals to recognize their own emotions and those of others, discern between different feelings and label them appropriately, use emotional information to guide thinking and behavior, and manage and/or adjust emotions to adapt to environments or achieve one’s goal(s).

The interpersonal communication skills of Humans vary from extremely good to very poor. As a matter of fact, the message is alternated at every single step of the communication, from what we think to what we transmit, from what we transmit to what the we receive, from what we receive to what we understand. It can therefore be described as an uncertain and inefficient process, making it hard to model.

Most Emotion AI are focused on the last step of the chain.

AI can be programmed to identify and detect external emotional signs at large scale and high speed and analyze them consistently and without bias. It is the first block to create an Emotion AI. This capability gives Robots an edge over Humans for mass emotion analyses: it is already more efficient to use AI technology to measure the emotions after a political speech, an advertisement campaign or a TV news. Companies such as BeyondVerbal or Affectiva already master the capabilities to analyze emotions on faces and speeches while Talkwalker and TheySay offer advanced social media sentiment analyze capabilities.

What’s next?

Based on the current trends, we can predict that AI applied to detect emotions will reach new highs thanks to the ever-growing processing power, augmented by new types of data such as body sensors, and benefit from the field of neuroscience to refine algorithms.

The understanding of mass «feelings» is the first step, the next logical step being the ability to refine the analysis at the level of the individual. Here too, technology is a useful ally.

Tomorrow, biosensors or connected biological sensors, will bring new information, which will complete and refine even more the knowledge of the emotion of an individual. A biosensor could measure the body temperature, the level of iron in the blood and the level of perspiration. This additional data would enrich the visual (face) and sound (tone of voice) sensors in order to refine the analysis of emotions.

For instance, hospital nurses could able to monitor not only the physiological state of patients, but also their emotional state without prior interaction, and will be able to adjust their behavior and tasks according to the patient’s overall condition.

New technologies will feed the algorithms with more precise and sharp data. A company called Endotronix developed a solution to remotely measure and monitor the state and behavior of the heart. When it comes to external data, French company Alpha MOS and Californian company Aromyx are able to build electronic noses. Such a technology could eventually reshape the perfume and food industry.

After conquering the field of logic, pattern recognition, automation and predictive marketing; Artificial Intelligence is now addressing Human emotions, despite the complexity of the subject, significant progress has been made and AI is already superior to Humans on certain tasks such as mass emotional analysis. Tomorrow, businesses and governments will likely use these technologies for security or performance reasons.

In September 2017, Vladimir Putin declared that «whoever becomes the leader in this field (artificial intelligence) will dominate the world». Russia is working hard and the United States are leading the race but China, pragmatic and ambitious, is strongly positioned to become the next leader in the field of AI. Europe can’t accept to stay behind and therefore needs to position itself in this race by proposing a coherent, competitive model, respectful of its History and its values. The brains and know-how are present but the competition between European countries and dissemination of the funds are preventing us from building a global AI powerhouse.

For what uses? Massive emotional surveillance France currently counts more than 60,000 surveillance cameras, while the United Kingdom which has more than 5 million. China, which is approaching 176 million cameras, aims to reach the figure of 626 million in 2020. People are therefore well monitored. This massive ability to visualize faces coupled with an emotion recognition technology will allow governments to measure the mood of an entire population, the level of anger during an event, the joy after a football game, hope or disappointment after a political speech. For instance, China has already planned to «score» its citizens in a broad listening plan for 2020 by using facial recognition and AI. Also in China, a high school set up a technology to scan students and identify their emotional state. This technology called «Intelligent Classroom Behavior Management System» identifies seven different expressions: neutral, happy, sad, disappointed, frightened, angry and surprised. The system scans and analyzes the students’ faces every 30 seconds, the data is then processed to be analyzed. It is not a coincidence that this is happening in China. Indeed, the Middle Kingdom is investing heavily in artificial intelligence and aims to become the world’s leading power in the field of AI by 2030.

Following his participation to this year’s edition of ICT Spring which notably focused on Fintech, but also on business relations between China and Luxembourg, BEAST met with Douglas Feagin, President of International Business, Ant Financial. The expert discusses the Chinese company’s mission, how it actually makes use of technology but also its presence in Europe and notably in the Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg. Moreover, he tells us more about financial inclusion and Ant Financial’s most recent initiatives in that direction.

How would you describe Ant Financial’s mission? How are you leveraging technology to provide your clients with new solutions and services?

Our mission is to bring the world more equal opportunities. We focus on five strategic technology areas: Blockchain, AI, security, IoT and cloud computing (BASIC) to help us reach our mission of making financial services more inclusive for all. Our technology has enabled our partners to provide financial services in a safer, less expensive and more efficient way. The technologies also underpin our financial services to serve SMEs and individuals to have more equal access to the digital economy.

Can you tell us more about the origins of Ant Financial and Alipay?

What are the main demands and challenges faced by your clients and how do your services help overcome these challenges?

Alipay launched in 2004 in China as a digital escrow service to bridge the trust gap between online buyers and sellers on an online marketplace. There was very little traditional payment infrastructure at that time. Credit card use is not as high in China as it is in the West and the other option of cash-on-delivery did not guarantee a mutually satisfactory transaction where a refund could easily be facilitated if the buyer wanted to make a return.

In 2014, we established Ant Financial – which includes Alipay and a full range of other inclusive services from facilitating digital payments to microloans for small businesses. Today, Alipay is the world’s leading third-party digital payment and lifestyle platform.

The biggest challenge for our users was the lack of access to banks or being underserved by the traditional banking system. We were able to bring a huge population of consumers online to participate in a burgeoning digital economy. Ant Financial has also helped the digital transformations of over 200 financial institutions, including over 100 banks, approximately 60 insurers, and 40 wealth management companies and security brokerages.

What are your ambitions in Europe, and more specifically in Luxembourg where you now have an electronic money license? How are your end-customers going to benefit from your presence here?

The electronic money license in Luxembourg announced in January 2019 makes it easier for our users to spend overseas.

Our strategic goal in Europe is to focus on partnerships to help connect local merchants to Alipay. This enables these merchants – large and small – to accept payment from Chinese living abroad or travelers. This ultimately connects the merchants with new customers or customers that may not have been able complete a transaction with the merchant. It’s also good for Alipay users because they are able to enjoy the kind of payment convenience they are used to at home.

Some of our recent partnerships include one with Barclaycard announced in March 2019 that opens 110,000 UK merchants to accept Alipay through a phased roll out in stores across the UK. In late 2018, UEFA named Alipay as its official global payment partner and official global digital wallet for all men’s national team events. Not only will this provide our Chinese users a seamless payment method across Europe, it will help UEFA reach and interact with a potential audience of billions in Asia.

What are the next steps in the development of the Alipay ecosystem? Which financial services trends are you keeping a close eye on?

Ant Financial now serves over 1 billion users globally through our global partnerships with local digital wallets.

In the Europe and the U.S., we are focusing on increasing partnerships with local merchants to connect to Alipay and ultimately, Alipay users. In emerging markets closer to China, such as Southeast Asia and India, we are focused on the value we can add and the technology expertise we can share. We see a lot of characterizations that made Alipay a success in China in the last 10 years with those markets − a fast-growing mobile penetration, a rapidly developing internet economy and a growing base of middle-class consumers. In these markets, there is great opportunity to forge partnerships with local leaders to collaborate and best serve local users.

For example, we see great opportunities to bring the benefits of blockchain technology to individuals who need the access the most, particularly around security, sustainability and financial inclusion.

In the Philippines, we worked with GCash to launch a blockchain-based cross-border digital wallet remittance service, offering a fast, secure, convenient, transparent and low-cost way to transfer money directly between individuals in Hong Kong and the Philippines.

We addressed the pain point of Filipino workers’ time spent remitting funds back home, shortening of the time taken for remittance and fees saved with lower costs. We launched a similar service between Pakistan and Malaysia, another popular corridor for cross-border remittance.

How is Luxembourg perceived from abroad, and especially from China? According to you, what are the main advantages of the country?

Luxembourg is a cultural and historical destination in Europe, and a great place to visit! I have had a wonderful time here at ICT Spring and have been welcomed by wonderful conference organizers. From what I can gather, Chinese tourism has risen in Luxembourg over the past decade due to interest in the historical, central and convenient location in Europe. According to the 2018 Nielsen Report on Trends for Mobile Payment in Chinese Outbound Tourism, Chinese tourists in their 20s are leading the trend for exotic destinations.

It is one of our goals to continue to serve Chinese tourists overseas with payment options that they are used to at home.

Can you tell us more about your initiatives to further develop financial inclusion?

According to the World Findex Report issued by the World Bank in 2018, the number of globally unbanked has been reduced by 15 percent, from 2 billion to 1.7 billion, a large part due to Chinese and Indian digital wallet access. Still, a large majority of individuals and SMEs from emerging economies still lack access to formal savings and credit; they have no safe way to save and invest their money, and must rely on informal lenders and personal networks for credit. We are interested in collaborating with local partners to bring more consumers into the financial ecosystem, whether it’s by backing homegrown local champions or lending our expertise and resources to help them create even better local products. Many are affected positively by the world’s increasingly connected financial system. This includes unbanked and underserved populations, who have more opportunities to access financial services than ever before.

DIVING INTO THE CONCEPT OF KYT – KNOW YOUR TRANSACTION

In a context of digital transformation echoing with artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and customer experience, financial institutions are facing multiple challenges to adapt their services to new needs and expectations. Frank Roessig (Head Digital Solutions for Finance) and Claudia Albanese (Innovation Manager, Finance) from Telindus Luxembourg met with the BEAST team to discuss KYT – Know Your Transaction – which notably aims at preventing fraud through the use of AI. Tackling the current challenges of KYC «Telindus as a provider of a complete digital KYC – Know Your Customer – solution, is addressing some of the key challenges faced by the financial sector, from banks and funds to life insurance companies, but also other industries, like law firms, transport authorities, etc., and serving all types of clients, from startups via crowdfunding platforms to asset managers,» starts Frank Roessig.

According to him, the current challenges of KYC are partly linked to a frustrating customer experience, which might lead to clients switching service providers. Also, recurrent tasks are costly for companies and are actually not bringing any added value to the customer. Finally, regulators all over the world are getting more stringent when it comes to applying the latest laws on money laundering and data protection. «In this respect, and in order to help our clients tackle these challenges, we have launched DigitalKYC, a new digital solution that enables the risk-based management of KYC, with several modules that can be plugged-in, thereby adapting DigitalKYC to all business models. It is able to cover individual KYC in over 130 countries and institutional KYC in over 80 countries,» highlights the Head Digital Solutions for Finance. Thanks to the Telindus-powered solution, clients now have a swift compliance journey on the one hand, while institutions are significantly cutting costs and enhancing the quality of the services on the other hand: «it’s all about creating the KYC of the future, and even the finance of the future!

Fraud detection or finding a needle in a haystack «Nowadays, every asset manager, banker, or any other stakeholder, is experiencing an important digital revolution,» underlines Claudia Albanese.

In 2018, only 5% of global payments were still done via paper: we are witnessing a change in the payment mix, with a strong movement towards non-cashbased transactions. The expert explains it with the advent of online and mobile banks now offering swift and relevant customer experiences: clients can easily connect at any time and dispose of their financial services through an omni-channel accessibility. «Yet, in between a vast majority of transactions that are legit, you may find some fraudulent ones. In this respect, KYT consists in a constant monitoring of the transactions, in order to assess fraud,» she adds.

On average, 99,85% of the credit card transactions processed every day are legit: therefore, detecting fraud is like finding a needle in a haystack. The Telindus experts decided to come up with a KYT concept leveraging the power of AI. Marketed as an «AIpowered tool box», it detects anomalies.

As explained by Claudia Albanese, «thanks to a powerful infrastructure, we are also able to run computational data to identify fraud within a network. The solution aims at responding to the AML and PSD2 regulations, among others».

She describes it as a natural evolution from KYC, leveraging on the data economy.

According to Frank Roessig, the future of finance is based on data and is now being extended through the AI-driven detection of anomalies in data. «These anomalies can be negative – money laundering, fraud, etc. – but they can also be positive and used to detect client needs and attrition, by monitoring their behavior and satisfaction. It is crucial to detect client needs and turn them into business opportunities. We all know that these tasks cannot be done manually, yet, from a regulatory perspective, financial institutions and companies now have to report suspicious activities, with a thorough and detailed description of each anomaly, « he adds. Frank Roessig also warns against «over detection», which could block the clients in their transactions and instantly affect their experience with an app, brand, etc.

The experts at Telindus, when building such a concept, had to deal with a huge amount of data, and therefore needed significant computational power. «Then, in order to detect the 0,15% fraudulent transactions, we had to find the best AI-model which would give us the best prediction.

The solution needs to detect in an optimal way, without blocking the users: clients most certainly won’t enjoy the fact that a transaction is flagged as fraud if it’s actually legit,» says Claudia Albanese. Her colleague then discussed the challenge of interpretation: anomalies can be detected, but people also need to be able to read them. According to Frank Roessig, this also includes a key «visualization» aspect, as compliance and marketing teams must be in a situation where they can easily understand what the data is telling them in order to take a sound decision. «It actually involves data scientists, IT managers, compliance experts, marketers…

and we always add a design thinking component because the user should understand what’s behind the machine.

The report must be decision-ready,» adds the Fintech expert. Moreover, since the solution builds on AI, it will keep on learning as time goes by and will eventually become better and more precise. As Frank Roessig puts it, «at the end, AI gives us recommendations. It is us, Humans, who are responsible for the decisions that are taken».

The combination of tech and industry expertise Currently, banks are using rule-based systems to detect fraud consisting in «if» and «then» statements. These can block multiple cases, but fraud, in its very definition, is constantly evolving. «Therefore, we should assume that we are not safe, and that fraud gets more sophisticated. As the CTO or CIO of a financial institution, I wouldn’t be comfortable knowing I’m only using a rule-based system that cannot account for all situations and does not evolve. I would feel safer with a system that monitors all transactions in near real-time,» comments Claudia Albanese. She also stresses that the Human expertise is still crucial since the solutions gives an indication with a confidence interval, with the user taking the final decision. The KYT solutions can therefore be defined as semi-supervised, keeping the people in the loop and building on their expertise and judgement.

To conclude, the experts discussed the benefits of opting for such KYT concept: it allows a constant monitoring of all transactions, done in a semi-automated way, with data being directly plugged into the system and scored with a confidence interval in near real-time.

«A more secure way to deal with potential cases of fraud as it flags events that you do not expect to happen,» underlines Claudia Albanese. KYT surely maximizes the amount of anomalies detected: cheap to operate as you can start in an agile manner, it also allows the detection of new sources of revenue for the company. «Finally, the system gets better as it is used. We are witnessing the very same process within the Fintech team of Telindus, with a presence in Benelux and in North America, and an expertise and knowledge growing on a daily basis in the fields of data management, customer experience and cybersecurity,» concludes Frank Roessig.

«CYBERSECURITY IS A STRONG FACTOR OF ATTRACTIVENESS FOR OUR ECONOMY»

François Thill, Security Director at the Ministry of the Economy, discusses the latest cybersecurity trends and shares his pieces of advice to Luxembourgish companies by depicting the main pillars of a robust cybersecurity strategy.

Moreover, the expert also tells us about the future initiatives of the government in terms of IT Security.

What are the main cybersecurity trends?

Cybersecurity is still a very costly and complex domain. One of the most promising trends consists therefore in intense cross-sector as well as crossborder collaboration, especially in the area of threat and vulnerability intelligence. Collaboration leads to commonly agreed situational awareness and thus to comparable risk management and better-informed governance decisions in an ecosystem that is per definition complex and interdependent. Due to the fact, that multiple actors share knowledge, based on a commonly agreed taxonomy, threat information is not only limited to indicators of compromise but can be aggregated into the understanding of campaigns or event identification of threat actors.

This trend of sharing relevant information will accelerate and include business workflow details of cyber criminals, like account numbers, crypto currency wallets or autonomous systems used by malicious groups.

Cybersecurity is a societal challenge. If individual entities are closely collaborating and are able to rely on their peers to provide specialized cyber security services of high quality, they contribute to a far more resilient ecosystem than if they try to handle cyber issues by themselves.

Together, we can create a strong economical attractiveness factor.

A second promising trend is trust management. Traditional certification schemes, relying on the evaluation of a single security component are reformed (Common Criteria evaluations). These traditional certification schemes are not only time consuming and expensive, but also prohibitive to changes. They are inaccessible for start-ups, and create a protectionist market access control. Nowadays, security device hardware becomes a commodity, and it is the software that represents the key component.

This software needs to be updated on a regular basis to correct misfits or provide new functionalities in our quickly evolving economy. Creating new certification schemes able to cope with these requirements, as well putting in place regulatory sandboxes, to identify new dynamic regulatory frameworks, represent a very interesting trend in cyber security.

What are your three main pieces of advice to companies in Luxembourg that today still haven’t added cybersecurity to their strategy?

Cybersecurity is a board issue. Impacts caused by cyber security incidents can have devastating consequences not only for the company itself but also for its contractors and customers. For this reason, I advise companies firstly to become aware of their most important business information and processes.

Secondly, I would advise companies to develop a risk based governance approach, to perform regular risk assessments using real-life incident scenarios, and to implement appropriate organizational and technical measures. Thirdly, businesses must take on board their employees, since the “human factor” presents a large range of exploitable vulnerability patterns.

Technical safety is important, but often overrated in its overall role. Take the example of the security devices in a car (security belt or ABS). They do provide security to a certain extent, but they are not able to protect the driver against careless driving.

#Technology | Cybersecurity

What are the main components of a robust cybersecurity strategy? What are the main pillars?

In cybersecurity, collaboration is key. Therefore, a robust governmental strategy should focus on governance, cooperation and coordination and play a unifying role.

Cybersecurity is a strong factor of attractiveness for our economy as it generates trust.

Setting up situational awareness and sharing existing information to build objective and comparable risk management is key to an effective and efficient governance. Once most common incident scenarios, as well as probabilities of threats, ease of exploitation of vulnerabilities and efficiency of risk treatment measures are made available, both the general public as well as the private sector will be able to create comparable risk assessments. The aggregation of these risk assessments on a regulatory level will leads to informed governance decisions and effective guidance, minimizing the usage of coercive measures. Collaborating with the government in this respect should lead to a competitive advantage rather than a regulatory burden.

A governmental strategy should also foster collaboration between public and private entities by providing the right tools and frameworks to collaborate and capitalize on synergies. It is also the government’s role to raise awareness especially at the level of citizens, SMEs and to provide them with appropriate information and services.

Finally, a governmental strategy should also focus on the creation and maintenance of a secure privately or publically owned digital infrastructure as a business enabler. Preventive, protective, incident response and repressive capabilities with adequate competences and skills must be available in an economy relying on digital services. The third governmental strategy (2018-2021) addresses all these factors in a collaborative approach.

How is the government supporting the companies located in Luxembourg when it comes to improve their defense and cybersecurity approaches?

The government of Luxembourg provides guidance in terms of behavior and organizational measures via the web sites of ANSSI, SECURITYMADEIN.lu as well as BEE SECURE. It provides free diagnostic services as well as tools to share threat intel and perform risk assessments. The government provides incident response capabilities via four governmental sponsored CERTs. There are financial programs to help companies to improve their digital capabilities as well as their cybersecurity. These are provided by the Ministry of the Economy, with the support of Luxinnovation. Finally, the government provides grants in R&D activities.

Can you tell us more about the government’s future initiatives in terms of cybersecurity?

The government is transposing the third cybersecurity strategy, based on 22 objectives and 61 action items. Luxembourg government is keen to create situational awareness and to introduce an informed governance approach, with the aim to the create a risk-sharing platform in the spirit of MISP (malware information sharing platform) operated by CIRCL. The government will also create a national DDoS mitigation center under the control of the High Commissioner for National Protection. Moreover, the government will invest in cyber defense.

How can Luxembourg reinforce its position as a digital fortress in Europe?

The digital fortress of Luxembourg can only flourish if it is inclusive and business friendly. Cybersecurity is a growing factor of attractiveness as it promotes trust. Luxembourg should intensify its efforts in this respect and continue to develop and attract the necessary skills, services and infrastructures to be able to capitalize on synergies and collaboration between all the actors in order to create a resilient, modern, open and safe economy.
