Farnham is a designated World Craft Town, by the World Craft Council (WCC), and October Craft Month is our opportunity to celebrate craft and crafts people together.

Our theme for October Craft Month 2022 was chosen to highlight the vast array of crafts taking place in and around Farnham behind the doors we pass every day. We have so many amazing crafts

Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age. Has there ever been a time when glass was dominant? Could it be now? 2015 was the UN International Year of Light and as glass and light are intertwined, The United Nations agreed to endorse 2022 as the International Year of Glass.

To see Jessica’s work, which celebrates her love of nature and the skill of traditional Arts and Crafts stained glass and to find out more about The International Year of Glass, visit The New Ashgate Gallery in central Farnham. Voting for Surrey Artist of the Year 2022 will be open too until 14th October when the work by 20 new shortlisted artists and makers will be on display. See event listings for details.

Farnham Creatives Network is a friendly group which has an informal monthly meeting at The Riverside Cafe, Farnham Maltings. Everyone is welcome to go along and connect with fellow makers, artists, designers, educators, gallery owners and other like-minded creatives in a casual setting. There are also invited guests who attend to chat and answer your questions about the focus topic; be it Etsy, social media, markets, holding an open studio, selling online and everything in between! 7pm - 9pm on 6th Sept, 4th Oct, 15th Nov, 12th Jan.

My motivation comes from my childhood for as long as I can remember I have wanted to create. My mother was an artist so it was a creative background. My father was an author as well as owning his own business. I’m influenced by Charles Rennie Mackintosh because he combined beautiful lyrical watercolours with his architecture. This sums up my work.

But I would say that a painting that I did of Lowndes Buildings in a way formed part of my childhood with my parents to fast forward to meeting the people who lived and owned one of the houses.

Farnham is my home and my love of it is part of who I am. I studied at WSCAD, now known as UCA, and worked there for 11 years after graduating. So much of what I produce is due to my love of all of the architecture and hidden alleyways that show you a part of Farnham that hasn’t changed.

12 years ago I left my corporate job to study for a Jewellery and Silversmithing degree. But it was the initial passion inspired by my tutor at evening classes before that, that led me to where I am today; not only as a designer and maker but as a teacher too as I love to share my skills and passion for jewellery!

When I graduated I was excited to have won multiple awards for my collection (from esteemed organisations including The British Jewellery Association and The Goldsmiths Company).

Meet the Maker - Jessica Noble

What is the indispensablemostitem or tool in your studio?

Farnham is such a vibrant and creative place with its unique history and heritage in the crafts. I feel that I have found my creative home and a warm community of like-minded people. I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.

My new collection is taking my designs in a different direction which focuses on combining jewellery collections with small-ware dresser pieces. Ideas and inspiration are born from my fascination with organic forms and botanical patterns and textures.

Being part of a community of makers is…

Far from being a perfect piece, it was probably my most formative piece as a designer and maker.

Being amongst friends. We share skills, techniques, tools, materials and advice with a good chat over a (Classes)oldbarnworkshop.co.ukjessicanoble.co.ukcuppa!(Jewellery)jessicanobledesign

I’ll have to say the humble piercing saw. With just this I’d still be able to fabricate both simple and intricate pieces.

To have this level of positive feedback gave me the confidence to go for it!

What is your favourite piece of work you have created, and why? A piece from my first ever graduate collection; a full, voluminous silver dress

to be my go to place to see awe inspiring art and design. It is utterly stunning. I also enjoy going to independent exhibitions and discovering some really unexpected curations.

What is your achievementproudestoraward you have received? Teaching myself to complete funding applications and achieve money that enabled people to access free clay activities at Farnham Pottery. Schools, Young Carers, clay confidence building for University

When being close to other crafts people who can share their concepts and skills, boundaries can be crossed and fresh creative journeys followed.

An Earthenware Terra Cotta and stoneware pale clay mixed, I prefer the softer colour. Working in this medium has benefits for the planet, a lower maturing temperature for clay and glaze and the soft sensual qualities of slips, as a covering or as translucent wash on warm coloured clay. When rolled out the slips expand and fade, all coloured slips behave differently ,a continual learning curve.

Meet the Maker - Julia Quigley

What is your favourite piece of work you have created, and why? The very next piece I make. I might fail better next time.

Being part of a community of makers is... Invigorating, supportive, helpful, both practically and www.weststreetpotters.co.ukconceptually.

What are you working on at the moment and where do you find ideas for your work?

Students and events for all benefited from Lottery funding.

Why is Farnham the place to practise your art/craft?

Currently I’m slicing sheets of previously painted and stencilled soft clay before stretching with a hand or mechanical roller and hand building dishes, jugs and plates. Occasionally decals are applied to the damp surface and rolled into the slips, adding a change of pace and pattern. Ideas pop up at the most unexpected times, the distorted bicycle series was inspired by a road sign designed for motorists to read. The ubiquity of road signs and their stylised design intrigues me.

What medium do you use in your practice and why?

I have no idea what inspired the choice of ceramics
