Welcome Welcome to the second Farnham Festival of Cycling! In a move to make this year even better and to spread the celebration of the bicycle across town, we’ve collaborated with Farnham Charity Bike Ride to bring our dates together, and as well as running the Hill Climb again we’re staging Farnham’s first-ever Town Centre Races. Our ambition was to appeal to every kind of cyclist – leisure riders, commuters, children, weekend warriors, hardcore racers and everything in between – and we hope you’ll feel we’ve achieved that. Take a bit of time to wander round the Maltings, which has transformed itself into a Velo Village for the day. It’s a chance to look, touch, wander and ask questions; and an opportunity to meet the people behind the brands – people who are passionate about what they design, create, manufacture or sell, and who love riding their bikes as much as we do. This old building is a rabbit warren of nooks and crannies – so go upstairs, go downstairs, peer round corners and make sure you’ve explored everything it has to offer. We hope you’ll be as surprised and delighted as we have been by the number of vibrant and thriving companies, clubs, organisations and fitness professionals in our corner of south west Surrey – and beyond – who have come together to be part of this festival. Enjoy the ride!

Power Core with Jo Evans 2.15pm

A 45 minute taster session demonstrating some of the benefits of Yoga for cyclists: ¡ it increases flexibility in the lower back, hip flexors and hamstrings ¡ it builds core strength and stability, and strengthens the respiratory system, improves posture ¡ it lowers blood pressure, helps with insomnia and aids concentration. Jane Adams 07733 420 214

A one hour session demonstrating how the controlled, flowing movements of Pilates strengthen the core, help realign postural imbalances, improve flexibility and develop functional balance. Pilates brings mind and body together by concentrating on lateral thoracic breathing, core engagement and precision of movement. Jo Evans www.joevansPT.co.uk

A 45 minute non-cardio, mat-based resistance workout. It has a strong focus on core strength but will in fact challenge every muscle in your body and will finish with some deep stretching. Underlying Pilates principals are used to maintain correct alignment, core engagement and spinal safety but with a more dynamic and less technical approach than a standard Pilates class. Mindful Thoughts for Cyclists 2.15pm

Investing in a Rider Development Programme 3pm

Impoverished after WW2, Britain ran a superb ‘Austerity Games’ in which all of our cyclists won a medal. Wally Happy (pictured in 1950, above right) gives an enlightening talk about events at Herne Hill Velodrome – the only remaining 1948 Olympic venue that is still in use.

Nick Moore is a cyclist, writer, and cycling journalist. He was a high-mileage ‘MAMIL’ (middle-aged man in lycra) for over 10 years and had an epiphany when diagnosed with osteoarthritis aged 40. He now enjoys cycling for the journey rather than the destination. Nick will sign books in the shop after his talk.

Level 3 British Cycling and VCM Club coach Michael Guilford gives a 15 min talk about the VC Meudon rider development programme which began in 2014 and supports riders aged 15–23 with the purpose of training, educating and aiding their development. www.rideabout.co

Farnham Bike Trail around the town all day

Check out Pip’s ‘Simon’ derny which he uses regularly to pace professionals and amateurs at track and velodromes, and his Stayer bike which was ridden by Belgian pro Willy de Bosscher in the Belgian National Championships and the Worlds.

Stage 2 – Düsseldorf/Liège in the words of Christian Prudhomme: ‘Most of the stage will take place in Germany. During the last visits to Liège during the 21st century, the riders battled it out on time-trials while those who normally shine on Liège-Bastogne-Liège are among the best punchers of the moment. This time, a sprint victory is to be expected on the boulevard de la Sauvenière.’

Pick up a Bike Trail leaflet from the Box Office and set off round town to find the decorated bikes! There are 9 of them placed around the town centre. Come On Eileen 11.15am & 1.30pm (19 mins)

Vive le Tour 12pm & 2.30pm (18 mins)

‘Come on Eileen’ is a short film telling the remarkable story of Coventry cyclist Eileen Sheridan who became a record breaking professional cyclist in the 1950s. Eileen gives a first hand account of her astonishing career, from early touring club days to her famous rides as a professional which set a standard for generations of female cyclists to come. The film is directed by keen cyclist Anthony Collins, who was drawn to Eileen’s story after reading her 1956 autobiography ‘Wonder Wheels’.

This film short, directed by Louis Malle in 1962, places the spectator at the heart of the peloton. The colours of the jerseys, the excited buzz of the crowds, the pain and the exploits explode from the screen.
