UNIVERSITY PREPARATION
UCAS
You will, by now, have heard the term UCAS, and you might be wondering what exactly it is. To get technical, UCAS stands for the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service, and they operate the application process for British universities; UCAS within school refers to the process for applying to university. Simple!
While most of you will probably apply for university, there are other excellent paths available and we will walk alongside you as you make important choices for your future, ensuring you get to where you want to be. In 2023, as well as all the fantastic university places girls secured, two sixth formers were accepted onto incredibly competitive Degree Apprenticeships with PwC, while in 2024 paths included Zoology at Exeter, Mechanical Engineering at Warwick and English at Cambridge.
In the Summer Term of Lower Sixth, the UCAS process begins. You will attend a series of workshops on things like how to pick courses, what to expect from university life and how to write a great personal statement. You will be encouraged to explore and shortlist potential courses and destinations, attending any Open Days that you can, and you will draft your personal statement, with clear guidance to help you. Over the summer holiday, you will be tasked with developing your personal statement. This statement is how you show a university or company that you offer far more than just grades. Your personal statement will go through several drafts before it is finalised and sent off, along with your predicted grades, ideally before the October half term in Upper Sixth. Then, the waiting begins...
We encourage you to be aspirational with your choices – aim high. With a rich, well-written personal statement, good interview experience and a strong set of predicted grades, we know that universities will make you an offer. Some universities offer without interview, some will want to include an extra hurdle
such as an interview or admissions test. Offers are normally conditional, based on achieving certain grades. Remember – a good EPQ result can encourage a university to lower their grade requirements just for you.
This might all seem a little daunting but our processes and procedures are simple, robust and effective. In short, we will guide you every step of the way. And when you achieve your first-choice place, we will be ready to celebrate with you!
Unifrog
Unifrog, which you might remember from your Taster Day in Year 10, will be your one-stop-shop for all things related to higher education. Through Unifrog, you will search for and compare courses, build your shortlist, write your personal statement and manage your application and offers. Your subject teachers, Form Tutor and Head of Year will use it to write and collate your references. It is a smart management platform which makes applying for university or apprenticeships a bit less stressful.
Oxbridge and MDV
Every year, several Farnborough Hill students gain places at Oxford and Cambridge, as well as at some of the leading medical schools. Underpinning this success is a team of highly experienced advisors, mentors and tutors who love guiding students through this process.
Entry to these universities is highly competitive and, to be considered, you will need to have an excellent set of GCSE results, consisting largely of 8s and 9s. You should also be on course to obtain the highest grades at A level: if an offer is made, it is likely that you will be asked to achieve at least one A*, depending on your chosen course.
Beyond these grades, Admissions Tutors will take into account the following:
• The contents of your Personal Statement: this is your opportunity to show why you want to study your chosen course and to provide evidence of the work that you have already completed to make yourself an attractive and exciting candidate
• Your scores in Admissions Tests, your abilities evidence in submitted written work and/or performance at interview
• Your commitment and achievement in the subject, including MOOCs, essay competition entries and/or an EPA etc
• A reference from the school: as we know you so well, our UCAS references are always extremely detailed and personalised
To help prepare for the level of competition in achieving these places, each student will be assigned an academic mentor who will support wider reading and meet with you regularly to discuss your work and debate your ideas. This mentor will also provide support and tutoring in preparation for any necessary Admissions Tests and in compiling written work for submission.
In addition:
• The Higher Education Evening will include a session focussing specifically on Oxbridge preparation
• You are encouraged to attend Open Days and to make contact with Farnborough Hill Old Girls who are current undergraduates in both medical degrees and at Oxford or Cambridge
• Personalised interview preparation will be provided, including an initial session as part of the Sixth Form Interview Evening and at least two further interviews (with feedback) with subject specialists for local schools and colleges.
Class of 2023 students Aimée and Phoebe both secured incredibly competitive Degree Apprenticeships with PwC.
Phoebe shared her journey to securing this coveted opportunity:
‘I found out about the PwC Degree Apprenticeship from a Duke of Edinburgh’s email and immediately booked onto the University of Birmingham’s Open Day, where I learned about the PwC Virtual Park and Virtual Insight Week.
PwC is famously one of the ‘Big Four’ international professional support service companies. I learned lots about them during their Virtual Insight Week – an interactive week of talks, activities and networking. Those who attended the event were invited to an office event in London, where we had the opportunity to meet new PwC graduates and ask them questions - I had a lot!
What I loved about the PwC Computer Science Degree Apprenticeship is that you are considered an employee from the first day of university, as an 18-yearold. As well as the one-year placement in Year 3, you are expected to complete placements during the summers but apart from that you have the same full university experience as all other students.
The selection process was long and required a lot of preparation. The initial stage was a behavioural assessment using games that tested our memory, speed, patience and ability to recognise emotion. Successful candidates were then invited to an online virtual interview where we had to record ourselves for five minutes giving answers to different questions on ourselves and PwC.
Success in the online interview led to the final stage - a group task. In groups of five or six unknown candidates, we were tested on our ability to work under timed conditions and assess our business acumen. The end result and offer of a place came in a phone call received in the middle of London on a school trip; needless to say, I was delighted and I can’t wait to start!
CAREERS
Careers advice is an integral part of the sixth form on the hill; the decisions you take at this stage can have a profound effect on your career opportunities. Every effort is made to ensure that you will follow a programme that fits your particular needs and abilities, and is in keeping with your career aspirations. You will have a ‘Welcome to Sixth Form’ meeting with the Careers and Alumnae Officer. Subsequently you will be able to attend drop-in Careers sessions in our dedicated Careers Hub in the Duke’s Room. Together, you will explore the results of your EC Careers Morrisby profiling, discuss a multitude of career paths and what you need to get there, draw on the extensive Old Girls’ network for guidance on just about anything and you can even debate the merits of a gap year, if that interests you.
You will also have a dedicated PSHEE Day on Careers Skills and have the chance to attend the Careers Fair.
The Head and Assistant Head of Sixth Form, your subject teachers and your Form Tutors are a wealth of knowledge and will readily discuss your future plans. Unifrog also has a vast library of careers information, well referenced and easily accessed, and the Duke’s Room contains a careers library, which includes paper copies of university prospectuses and other useful reference material.
Excel Mentoring
In Upper Sixth, you will be encouraged to sign up to our Excel Mentoring Programme, during which you meet virtually with an alumnae mentor. A minimum of five sessions take place throughout the year and are on topics such as exam pressure, interview techniques and how to thrive away from the Hill.
Work Experience
Work experience is key to helping shape and support your next step choices, so we encourage you to take on work experiences during the holidays. You may also have a part-time job or even a volunteering role: these experiences will influence your future choices and give weight to any job (and university!) applications. You will also have access to participate in a range of online work experiences through Springpod, Young Professionals, InvestIn and Prospects. These platforms offer a wide selection of virtual and hybrid work experiences (virtual and in-person), giving you a great taste of potential future careers.
Careers Inspiration
We host a biennial Careers Fair (the next event is in March 2026) to introduce you to a multitude of different careers, from Accountancy to Social Work and all that is in between. At the Careers Fair, you can speak to stall-holders (many of who are Old Girls) to find out how they got to where they are today.
Throughout the academic year we are also fortunate to host a wide range of speakers, many being alumnae, who deliver ‘ThinkTank’ talks and ‘Insight Into…’ sessions, all designed to inspire you and illustrate just how wide the working world is. And, new this year, are Networking Breakfasts. Further details and dates will be confirmed shortly!
ACADEMIC ENRICHMENT
Research Skills
During your Lower Sixth year, you will all have one lesson a week dedicated to your development as well-rounded, independent learners. During these sessions, we shall develop the skills required to allow you to become confident, capable researchers. Some of the topics covered during these sessions include Library literacy, research planning, research ethics, academic writing, presentation skills and best practice regarding AI. The skills developed during these lessons will support you throughout your Sixth Form careers as you navigate NEAs, exam preparations and your EPQ, preparing you for moving onto university study and beyond.
As part of your study skills programme, you will then have the opportunity to pursue either an Extended Project Qualification and/or complete some MOOCs.
Extended Project Qualification
Some of you may have undertaken the Level 1 or 2 Project Qualification in Year 9, and it is likely that you achieved an excellent result, as well as learning important research and time management skills. The Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) offered in the Sixth Form is a similar undertaking, and is worth half an A level (and so earns UCAS points, which will be important in the near future!).
Like the foundation levels, the Extended Project offers you the opportunity to delve into research a topic of interest outside of your chosen subject specifications and produce either a research essay or artefact on your chosen topic. You may choose any topic you wish, although it is likely that this will be related to a particular interest in one of your A level subjects, or a subject that you wish to study at university. The type of project you undertake can vary. For example, most people opt to complete the 5,000 word research essay,
however, you could complete an artefact project by creating a resource such as a piece of music or curating a performance. You will be allocated a supervisor who will keep you on track, and you will be assessed on your ability to plan, manage, research, compete and review your project. You will need to be highly motivated and committed to the independent work involved in undertaking the EPQ, but it is well regarded by those universities looking for high calibre students and it provides an excellent opportunity for you to delve more deeply into a topic that interests you.
MOOCs
MOOCS – Massive Open Online Courses – have dramatically changed the way that the world learns. MOOCS are online courses hosted by a number of the world’s leading universities and professional institutions. Often available for free, and requiring different timeframes to complete, MOOCs offer an opportunity to develop new skills and explore new topics from computer programming to international politics. As such a MOOC is a perfect way to help decide what to study at university, to add weight to your UCAS application, or simply to explore a flight of fancy.
If you decide that an EPQ is not for you, there is the opportunity to use this time to complete a MOOC: depending on the length, you might be expected to complete two MOOCs across the second half of the Lower Sixth.
RE-ACT
The RE-Act programme brings a Charity / Community element to the Sixth Form Super-Curriculum.
Throughout the course of the year, you will be able to take part in various programmes, such as working with the St Vincent de Paul Society to distribute Christmas hampers to the elderly, putting your crafting skills to good use to make items to sell to raise funds for local charities or even work alongside Mrs Greene Lally to teach English to refugees.
The programme is shaped by you and your skills and interests; you will work with your peers to come up with initiatives to help your local community and spread goodness and joy as far and wide as you can.
The most rewarding aspect of RE-Act last year, for me, was helping to teach English to asylum seekers under Mrs Greene Lally’s guidance. I met many wonderful people and have signed up to do the same in Upper Sixth.

LEADERSHIP
The Ivy House Award
The Ivy House Award is a key part of leadership development at Farnborough Hill and offers a bespoke course which promises to produce ‘extraordinary leaders’. They do not believe in a one-size-fits-all approach to leadership, that you have to have x character or y skill to be a good leader. Instead, each of you will explore your own inner self, what makes you tick, your passions, your drive, your ambitions and weaknesses. At the heart of the programme are the three Ivy House principles; self-knowledge, self-empowerment and selfleadership.
Normally only available to a handful of senior executives, the content of the Award is delivered through a combination of digital content, journal activities and discussions. In the first term, you work on your Storyboard. We all have our own unique story – this puts you in charge of writing yours. You gain a deeper understanding of who you are and become clearer about the life you are trying to create. In the second term, you work on your Game Plan – how to get to where you want to go. There are some crucial skills that make all the difference and will enable you to move forward in a way that is right for you.
To put it into typical Farnborough Hill words: it allows each pupil to discover and hone their ‘unique gifts and talents’ to prosper in their own way, much in the same way that the School develops musical talent, or linguistic gifts.
While you may already have the nascent skills, informally developed through experiences at school, The Ivy House Award will revolutionise the way in which you think of yourself. Your inner explorations will develop confidence in who you are – and the girl who shrunk into her chair so she wouldn’t be called on to answer a question in class, might just end her school career with a speech at the Leavers’ Assembly.
Positions of Responsibility
Throughout your school career so far, you will have seen several Head Girls and Deputies stand on stage and deliver speeches. You will have heard many Sixth Form led assemblies. You might have had a Sixth Form tutor in one of your classes, or you might have had a subject mentor. You will know your House Captains and seen the work they do on behalf of the Head of House, you will have seen Sixth Form Subject Prefects assisting at various events and supporting their teacher to promote their subject. You might have thought, ‘that will be me one day, speaking in front of hundreds’, or you might have curled lower in your seat and thought ‘no thanks’. Regardless of how you feel about taking on a leadership role, this is something that we believe is very important for your personal development, and we will work with you to find you a role which allows you to develop new skills, enhance existing ones, build confidence and give back to the School.
In the Spring Term of the Lower Sixth, we will invite applications for the Junior Leadership Team, House Captains, and Drama, Music and Sports Captains. A shortlisting and interview process will follow, and the successful candidates will take up their post in the Summer Term. For those who do not wish to have such a big role, we will work with the subject teachers to assign other smaller, but equally important Prefect roles, including Subject Prefects, Careers Prefect and Chaplaincy Prefect. We love hearing the ideas and suggestions of the new batch of Prefects and look forward to finding out what you have to add. The world never stops evolving, and nor should Farnborough Hill.
In addition to the leadership opportunities above, you can become a tutor or a mentor for younger pupils. These positions see you work with younger pupils, offering guidance and support on whatever aspect they require.
CAFOD Young Leaders
CAFOD is an international development charity and the official aid agency of the Catholic church in England and Wales. They work through their global church network to reach anyone in need, no matter their religion or culture, supporting communities living in poverty by providing skills and the means to use them, and campaign for global justice, so that every person can live a full and dignified life.
In the Autumn Term, following an application process, six Lower Sixth pupils are selected to be a part of the CAFOD young leaders programme, which encourages young people to learn about the work CAFOD does, and create events in their schools to raise awareness of and money for the charity. The skills you can hone through being part of CAFOD are numerous - event management, fundraising, public speaking - the list goes on!
You are also invited to attend Young Leaders’ training days at local schools, where you get to network with other young people and learn more about CAFOD’s work and their global development goals.
It is a fantastic opportunity to be part of something bigger, something that is working to change the world!
Being a CAFOD Young Leader was an incredibly worthwhile experience. Throughout the programme, I had the opportunity to collaborate with students from other schools which broadened my perspective and strengthened our collective efforts towards social justice. One of the highlights was running the Open Access club for Year 7s. This club provided a space for younger pupils to engage with us on issues big and small. It was wonderful to see their enthusiasm and commitment. Of course, there were challenges along the way: our projects required a lot of teamwork and problem-solving, however overcoming these obstacles made our successes even more worthwhile. Fundraising was a crucial part of our efforts. We organised events like cake sales and the first ever Culture Day, which not only raised money but also increased awareness about the causes we were supporting. Through these activities, we were able to make a noticeable impact and contribute to CAFOD’s mission of promoting global justice.
ENRICHMENT
The Enrichment Programme is a co-curricular programme designed to offer you that something extra, something different, as an antidote to the weekly workload that comes with your A levels.
The programme provides breadth and balance to life in the Sixth Form at Farnborough Hill and, as such, the offerings are split into four categoriesWellbeing, Skill, Outreach and Additional Qualification. These categories allow you to identify an area of life where you wish to invest more time, whether that be your own wellbeing in light of their other commitments, or spending time working with others to share aspects of life from which they have benefitted. We know that this may change from term to term, so the vast majority of Enrichments are organised in termly blocks so you can adapt your programme to suit your needs and interests each term.
The Enrichment activities take place every Friday afternoon and we work hard to ensure that you can do the activities you wish, but it can depend on how many students opt for each course. Some courses run over two terms and some activities will carry an additional cost. However, this cost is much lower than you would expect to pay were you to take these activities independently, as Farnborough Hill makes a financial contribution to every course.
Read on to find out more about the Enrichment Programme for September 2025.
Mindfulness
“Mindfulness is awareness that arises through paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment, non-judgementally…. It is about knowing what is on your mind.”
Jon Kabat-Zinn, founder of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction
Over a six week period you will be introduced to Mindfulness and will learn how this simple meditation technique can be used to benefit your whole life and enrich your everyday experiences. Mindfulness is about observation without criticism; being compassionate with yourself. It helps you gain and maintain control of your life and catch negative thought patterns before they descend into a negative spiral. However, it is not all about sitting still and meditating. You will learn about how it affects us physically and mentally, and participate in group exercises which will enhance the process, for example ‘Mindful Movement’ and ‘The Raisin Awareness’ exercise.
