The time after finishing chemo was not encouraging. “Those were the worst 30 days of the whole damn deal. I thought this thing had exploded in my head. My head hurt so bad.” He faced the next scan with trepidation. But, he said, “The doctor came in and says ‘I think we got it whupped. We can’t find a spot on there that’s alive yet. I don’t think I need to see you anymore.’” Dennis went back for a checkup every six months for two years – but has never been back since. “I was pretty much blessed by God in the deal. The big guy upstairs up there took care of that.” Dennis and Jean have two daughters. Katie lives in Kalispell, Mont., which is next to Glacier National Park. Katie is an equine veterinarian, a small animal vet and now an animal chiropractor. Their daughter Taylor is a registered nurse in Canton. She and her husband, Austin Fossum, live just a few miles away on the other side of the Newton Hills. Austin is an electrician.
Earlier this year, Taylor and Austin welcomed a son, Rhett James. It’s the first grandchild for Dennis and Jean. Undoubtedly, Rhett will hear all about his grandfather’s wild and wooly adventures. “Everybody’s got a story. It’s just life. It is what it is,” Dennis said.
