The Farm clearly identifies itself as a Christian nonprofit with a mission to provide an alcohol-free, drug-free and smoke-free experience to those seeking tranquility. Gary and Jan welcome family reunions, weddings, prayer retreats, class reunions, and corporate retreats and planning sessions. They recently played host to the South Dakota State Plowing Contest. Gary is immersed in local culture and can lead groups in historical, culinary and agrarian tours upon request for an additional fee.

Jan said, “The most interesting part of this place is the people who come and their stories.” One woman brought her daughter and they just spent the afternoon together sitting in the hammock swings on the porch. Another woman came to sit on the patio to write in her journal. “It is such a peaceful setting,” Gary said. “It’s a gravel road and we don’t get a lot of traffic. You don’t have any of the peripheral noise of even a small town. You can hear the rooster crowing, the sheep bellering and once in a while a horse neighing. You just kind of find yourself.”

The property features 37 acres of native prairie pasture. “It’s never been turned over, it’s never been grazed. You can walk out in it and feel what Laura Ingalls Wilder might have felt,” Gary said.

Faith, family, freedom, food, folklore and fun are woven into The Farm’s additional purpose of celebrating the story of immigrants to South Dakota. “My great-grandfather homesteaded here in Dakota Territory days. All of our immigrant ancestors made South Dakota what it is. We
