Quadtracs turn their hand to a range of tasks too – here pulling a specialist maize trailer.

Like getting your money’s worth? A diversified farming business is deploying high power tracklayers for a wide range of jobs. Jane Carley reports.

Tracking down value

B

rinklow Biogas is a diversified farming business with enterprises which include quarrying and renewable energy alongside 1,100 hectares of cropping near Coventry, Warwickshire.

Founded by Tony Aston, the business is now run by sons Dale and Mark and in 2015 the opportunity arose to build a digester, with 500cu.m per hour biomethane plant and 500kW generator. Maize and energy beet are among the crops grown on-farm to fuel the production of energy.

Dale says: “We have designed the plant for gas-to-grid to overcome storage issues and we are looking at an application for the carbon dioxide that is exhausted in liquefaction for the food industry, which would make us low carbon or carbon neutral, while surplus electricity generated could be used for hydrogen production in the future.”

The family’s interest in other businesses means that tractors need to work hard in the limited hours available to them, hence high horsepower machines have been used from the start.

although its main use was for heavy draft work, I also used it to pull a high capacity muck spreader to spread compost from our green waste recycling site onto the land.

“We soon learned that getting the right design on larger machinery was key and we still use high horsepower tractors for this, coupled to Bunning spreaders,” Dale says.

With the commissioning of the biogas facility, it became clear that

new equipment would offer more reliability and, shortly after, one of the first Magnum Rowtracs to be sold in the UK, a 340 CVX, arrived on-farm. One important modification to the 340hp tractor was to swap the standard 30-inch track frame for 24in.

“This means that I can use either 24in or 18in tracks on the same frame, with a choice of 710 front wheels or, in row crop format,

380s. We use it predominantly on the 24in tracks, but the option of a narrower footprint allows work between maize rows with an inter-row hoe and digestate application between the rows, while still at low ground pressure,” says Dale.

On 24in tracks, the Rowtrac is used with an umbilical slurry boom, carrying the reel on the front linkage.

“It is more power than this job needs but it’s a tractor we have got, so a tractor we will use. Other key jobs are ploughing on land, including with a flail on the front linkage to terminate cover crops in a onepass operation.”

He adds the Rowtrac is a good tractor for top work, making seedbeds for maize and beet used as feedstock for the digester, the CVX gearbox giving infinite control of FGinsight.com

forward speed. It is kitted out with a six-metre press up front, Watkins subsoiler toolbar and 6m power harrow.

“Subsoiling immediately behind the tractor and ahead of the power harrow takes out the wheelings, again reducing passes.”

Maize drill Timing is everything, so if the farm’s wheeled Magnum 380 CVX is tied up with top work in spring, the Rowtrac will also do a stint on a 12-row Vaderstad maize drill. The Rowtrac’s 3m roading width also comes into the equation when deploying tractors, says Dale.

“We had looked at spigoted duals on the Magnum 380, but they were hard to fit, so we have imported 1,100mm wide low side wall tyres from the USA on wheels specially made by Farmers Tyre. It makes

the tractor 3.5m wide so this can favour the Rowtrac.”

Other duties include tillage with a 4m Horsch Terrano and even clamp rolling with a buckrake on the front linkage and Silopacker at the rear, and on one occasion handling a 9m triple mower.

“We have stuck with Case IH for several reasons including the service offered by dealer Startin Tractors, who can provide the technical backup for non-standard options as well as precision farming support.

“They have fitted and set up the RTK steering and telemetry systems since we first purchased the tractor. The on-site technicians have also been very helpful which has been a major factor in keeping everything running when we have been under pressure.”

Dale adds that safeguarding lone workers is a major benefit of

telemetry, along with easier management of the fleet. He has also used it to study the fuel consumption with different implements, leading to a change of plough brand that saved 10 litres of fuel per hour.

Over the years, a range of tracklayer brands and layouts have been trialled on-farm.

“We have identified several advantages with sticking to Case – the lug drive puts 100 per cent of the power to the tracks, which are automatically hydraulically tensioned. Rubber mounting absorbs shocks and the position of the large front idler, slightly higher than the three central idlers, means that it pulls itself on top of the soil rather than bulldozing into it. The oscillation of the track also ensures that it maintains contact on turns.”

Twin track systems were considered and rejected as Dale notes the

four points of contact from two wheels and tracks allow turns under full power without scuffing and maintains straighter tracking in slippy conditions.

“Another benefit of the fourpoint design is I can use a front linkage to increase versatility, which I don’t believe is possible with a twin track,” he adds.

The John Deere 8RX was of interest, but is not currently available in a comparable horsepower with a CVT transmission, while the lower cost of the Rowtrac was also a consideration.

Value for money “We looked at 380 and 340 Rowtrac models at the time of purchase but for the cost of the extra horsepower, we could substitute the RTK system which is of more benefit. It is generally good value for money – there is a big step up in

price between the Rowtrac and Quadtrac.”

The opportunity to fix costs is another consideration, with 4,000 hours/four years, plus the option to extend, offered as a manufacturer’s warranty by Case IH. There is only one niggle, that being the track bearings. Rather than being sealed for life, these have sight glasses, which require crawling under the tractor to inspect.

So, what is on the shopping list for the future?

“The ideal would be to go all CVX, so to swap the existing Quadtracs and Rowtrac for a pair of Quadtrac CVXs, although it would need a specialist aftermarket front linkage for use on the clamp with a maize blade and one downside is the lack of front pto.

“We would keep the Magnum to work on the chipper, but the priority is probably to replace the Pumas first as they are doing the most roadwork.

“The jump in machinery costs in recent years is a big concern, however, so it’s not an immediate decision as the current fleet is proving very reliable.”

Xerion tanker pays its way

G

iven the meteoric rise in fertiliser prices, there is likely to be increased demand for digestate.

Which is good news for operators like Tom Banks.

His contract farming and share farming business, Banks Farming, based near Finedon, Northamptonshire, operates across 800 hectares of arable land, growing a mix of winter-sown wheat barley, rye, oilseed rape and beans, plus spring wheat and peas. Alongside this is a contract digestate application service that currently sees 110,000 tonnes of liquid applied onto farmland.

Mr Banks says: “I am fairly certain that the liquid digestate I apply to our own land will save us close to £200,000 this year, given the way fertiliser prices are continuing to rise.

“Those that previously ignored digestate are likely to start viewing the product as liquid gold.”

Having applied digestate across the land he farms over the last five years, Mr Banks is acutely aware of the value it has.

“We have seen areas of land go from minus values on indices, to twos, threes and fours,” he says.

“Digestate has put a lot of potassium back in the ground too. I have noticed that there is far less leaching from digestate than there has been from artificial fertilisers.

“In my experience, it is a product that seems to remain much more available to crops.”

The liquid digestate I apply to our own land will save us close to £200,000 this year, given the way fertiliser prices are continuing to rise TOM BANKS Tom Banks says that those who have previously ignored digestate are likely to start viewing the product as liquid gold.

“And I do feel that our involvement with digestate will also help to expand our contract farming operation,” he adds.

Equipment for the task includes a 462hp Claas Xerion 4200 with Kaweco tandem axle tanker, which joined the fleet in the summer of 2021. Supplied by local dealer Olivers, this close-coupled tanker sits on the back of the Xerion 4200 using a gooseneck drawbar to transfer weight onto the power unit.

The 28cu.m capacity tanker carries a 36-metre Vogelsang boom, which contains three macerators across the boom to keep liquid flow-

ing evenly across the full working width. And to extend operational flexibility, the boom can operate on 32m, 30m, 28m and 24m tramlines.

In addition, 16 sections with auto start/stop, are also part of the precision application process.

Analysis “Around 80,000t of liquor comes from a local anaerobic digestion plant, with near-constant liquid analysis to ensure the correct amount of units are applied,” he says.

“A typical volume is equivalent to 4mm of rainfall.”

Machine capacity is up to 2,000t/

day, but a more realistic output is 1,000t/day.

“It takes some feeding, and the travel distances from liquid supply to field will also influence output.”

Liquid logistics are handled by a fleet of four Newrock tri-axle tankers, pulled by Deutz-Fahr 8280 TTV tractors, with using ball and spoon hitches. As each draws up to the field entrance, the Xerion’s turbo fill suction pipe is lowered into place, drawing the entire content of each tanker, in just a matter of minutes.

Up front, a stone catcher and hydraulically driven knife unit prevents blockages and protects the rotary lobe pump used for liquid transfer.

pumping efficiency during filling.

“I do like the integration with Claas Cebis and Mueller controls,” says Mr Banks.

“Kaweco has worked with Claas for decades as a provider of slurry solutions, so you know it is all going to work seamlessly.

“From the joystick control that manages the front-mounted suction boom to the rate controller and application maps, the whole unit is faultless in its operation and functionality.”

“The Xerion’s power is good on the hills, balance is superb and the

way that the tank is filled and emptied always maintains weight transfer onto the tractor,” he adds.

“Traction is not an issue. The tank is designed to keep 7cu.m of liquid in the neck, to help with grip.”

Compaction For some though, compaction could be a limitation. To ensure the outfit treads as lightly as possible, Mr Banks specified the unit with Vredestein 900/60 R32 on the tractor, and Trelleborg TM900’s on the tanker.

very expensive option, and so I choose fixed inflation pressures to suit field work,” he says.

“The tanker has a following axle, which helps with manoeuvrability and surface integrity. And with most of the weight on the tanker, I make wider headland turns to ensure the tanker’s wheels are kept on tramlines when turning.”

Banks Farming has recently adopted a 36m tramline system, up from 32m, and with RTK guidance, it is currently in the process of making its tramlines permanent.

Having been establishing its crops with min-till techniques for five years, the contract farming business has opted to move into direct drilling for autumn 2022.

Soils farmed are varied but include Hanslope series clays, limestone brash and some sandy loams.

With the emphasis on micro-tillage,

he is focused on managing wheelings and compaction.

“Improving soil structure for all my customers is a key goal,” says Mr Banks.

“This in turn will encourage better rooting, improved nutrient uptake and move us to better yields.

And if we can do this while keeping a lid on establishment costs, then that’s good for the bottom line.”

As a result, Banks Farming has recently streamlined its tractor and machinery fleet, pinning its hopes on a 6m Horizon DSX disc drill.

fleets – one for the farm and the other for digestate,” says Mr Banks.

“Our ground is ready for the next step, so this change in policy has let me focus on operating costs, which means getting far better utilisation for all our kit, across both aspects of the business.”

Team Out went an older, 380hp Xerion, an 8m Horsch Sprinter, 4m Grange toolbar, 8m Carrier and a set of 8m rolls. Tractor availability will be provided by the four Deutz-Fahr 8280 TTV tractors that are currently used by the digestate team, and a John Deere 7530 has been retained to handle the new drill.

Mr Banks says the ideal width would have been a 12m drill, with the emphasis on controlled traffic.

“At this point, my options were limited,” he says.

“The Horsch Avatar was not right for my soils, so I have had to compromise on working width, by choosing a 6m Horizon.

He says that the drill’s three hoppers provide flexibility with cover crops and under-sowing, as he seeks maximum nutrient uptake and biodiversity across all soils.

A front-mounted turbo-filler simplifies liquid transfer, keeping the tanker in the field.

“We need to be less reliant on pesticides, so I will be looking to under-sow clover for example, and step into companion cropping to extend my rotation,” he says.

“We will never completely get away from moving soil, but microtillage has its place. And if we need to loosen headlands, then so be it.”

A 30m trailed sprayer has made way for a Bateman RB55 to achieve the 36m tramline regime, and a Case-IH 7120 combine with 30ft header is currently the sticking

point for his ideal controlled traffic regime.

“A 12m cut would be my ideal scenario going forward, and I am happy to remove straw in the short-term to avoid hair-pinning,” he adds.

“The advances we have made in the last five years means that moving into direct drilling should make a 800ha workload manageable for just one operator. It would not have been possible quite so quickly had we not been feeding our soils with digestate.”

Robotic mower offers capacity with flexibility

W

orking on steep, slippery terrain is a task which demands a careful and considered approach when involving machinery.

But for Alastair Bourne, of Bourne Bespoke, his approach involves the Green Climber LV600 – a radio-controlled rubber-tracked forestry mulcher which can work safely on 60-degree inclines.

He says: “There is a lot of estate land and forestry areas that have been left to their own devices over the years, with gorse, brambles and other vegetation taking hold. These overgrown sites have become unworkable areas of ground. A hedgecutter would not be strong enough for the job, but these areas can be successfully recovered and managed with a machine like the Green Climber.”

His business, Bourne Bespoke, Ashbourne, Derbyshire, is involved in landscaping, fencing, paddock and pasture maintenance and vegetation management – with the latter now accounting for about 60 per cent of his workload.

The Green Climber LV600 is the latest addition to his machinery fleet and is rapidly earning him a reputation for leaving a high-quality finish that leaves challenging terrain much more accessible and, perhaps more importantly, under control.

“Previously, such areas would have to be tackled by hand, with chainsaws, or risk damaging tractor tyres for those with hedgecutters,” he says. “Our machine takes away the risks associated with hand tools; it speeds up the job and leaves a mulched finish.

Stability “The better the finish, the slower the regrowth. And that is important to customers, particularly those looking to reseed these areas with wild flower mixes or grasses.”

The 56hp remote controlled power unit was supplied by Kilworth Machinery and includes an expanding track frame. This widens the footprint from 1.36 metres to 1.76m to improve stability when working on steeper slopes.

Overgrown vegetation is pulverised by the Green Climber, leaving a mulched layer of organic matter, ready for reseeding.

with 400mm of hydraulic side-shift that can be used to carry a variety of attachments.

To make the most of hydraulic performance, the machine uses a quick-coupler to manage remote hydraulic services for powered attachments and cooling is carried out with an auto-reversing fan.

Built by Italian firm MDB, the Green Climber uses a three-cylin-

der turbocharged Kohler engine with an engine oil pump system to enable safe operation on slopes of up to 60 degrees.

To ensure the unit grips well on steeper slopes, Mr Bourne opted for a deep-cleated rubber track.

“The Green Climber hangs on like a mountain goat,” he says.

“There is 1.7m of track on the ground, and with the machine being just 1.2m tall, the centre of gravity is incredibly low.”

The LV600 though, was not his first choice.

“I looked at other similar machines and my preference was

to invest in British-made equipment. But the service, support and knowledge from Kilworth Machinery is what cemented my decision.

“I wanted a machine that was big enough to work efficiently and productively, but not too big that I could not move it myself. Using my pickup truck with a trailer was much more flexible and cost-effective than having to involve external transport using a lorry.”

Weighing in at around 2.1 tonnes with a flail head fitted, the LV600 offers a useful combination of physical size and power, says Mr Bourne.

And to preserve the machine’s cosmetics from the harsh environments in which it works, Mr Bourne has fitted the machine with extra guarding.

“I had a friend fabricate the tubular side guards and the wrap-around rear panel,” he says.

“The rear panel is top-hinged with a gas-strut, allowing easy access to the cooling pack, while the two side panels protect its two-piece plastic bonnet when it thrashes headlong into the undergrowth.”

The mulching head is fitted with tungsten carbide teeth similar to those used on a road planning machine. Mr Bourne says the LV600 can pulverise overgrown vegetation up to 150mm in diameter, smashing it into an organic mulch that can be spread over the cleared area to slow down any regrowth.

“As a forestry mulcher, it is great for cutting paths or bridleways through overgrown areas, restoring woodland rides and creating easy access for shoots. What would previously have taken days – if you could get safe access to a location – can be done in a matter of hours.”

He says opening the front section of the hood lets the machine make its initial passes into overgrowth, with the upper guard keeping branches off the machine.

“You do not know what you are running into until you start to open up the site. It pays to go in gently, no

more than a machine’s length at a time, so I can keep the flail head off the ground for that first pass, before fully lowering for subsequent passes.

“When reversing back out over what I have cut, I fully close the hood so the flail head then pulverises roots, stems and branches as it reverses back out of the undergrowth, laying down a carpet of mulch.

“Most of the vegetation clearance work is achieved with a 750kg, 1.3m-wide fixed-tooth forestry mulching head. For finer work, such as grass, I have a traditional flail head that fits onto the machine, and this is great when mowing embankments,” he says.

Mr Bourne is looking to further expand the capabilities of the machine, through a wider range of attachments.

“A cultivator will also be useful, as would a range of other basic implements for land restoration. And it packs plenty of hydraulic power too. My plan is to equip the machine with a low volume, demount sprayer, so I can apply pesticides on steep banks.”

He says experience gained over the first year of operation has proved that a few essential tools are required on-site. These include a cordless grinder, bolt cutter, pry bar and a leaf blower.

“The challenge with overgrown vegetation is the amount of hidden debris you are likely to encounter; I have found metal, concrete blocks and manholes for example. And the cordless grinder has become my new best friend for removing wire from the flail head.”

He says that a leaf blower is useful for cleaning down, before leaving any job.

“Just like any contractor moving between jobs, there is a high risk of transporting weed seeds that can be carried among debris on the machine. It takes just a few minutes to blow down before leaving a job and that eliminates the risk of taking any contamination with you,” he says.

Diversifying brings fleet versatility

L

ike a lot of small-scale family farms, there are often limited opportunities for siblings to join the business and, as a result, other avenues of employment have to be sought.

For Rob Pybus, of Pyesmead Farm in Plaitford, near Romsey, Hampshire, that scenario meant stepping into agricultural contracting shortly after leaving Sparsholt College.

“It was very much a traditional route to stay working within agriculture, as the farm was not big enough to support everyone in the family,” he says.

“So I used what experience I had to provide paddock and field maintenance services, plus hay and haylage supply for local customers, using grass that was grown at home.”

That journey started in 2006 and he has since spent several years turning

his hand to many on-farm contracting tasks, including harvest help for other farms who needed an operator with a tractor.

“You soon realise that with the cost of buying kit, plus insurance, labour and fuel, that getting a sensible return on your investment is really challenging,” he says.

“A lot of customers struggle to see the value in what you have to charge to cover costs. And that is because many of them simply do not put a value on their own time.”

Opportunities Looking for opportunities, Mr Pybus saw an opening for work with an excavator, primarily for vegetation and tree clearance work on overgrown sites, along with ditching, pond work and fencing.

“It just seemed as though I was mopping up the jobs that others were not keen on doing,” he says.

“All I needed to do was find a way to make those work, so I bought a second-hand excavator and got stuck-in.”

Nearly 16 years later, R.D. Pybus now operates a fleet of three excavators, plus a 2018-model JCB Fastrac 4220 with loader, and also a John Deere 6130R with loader, with both tractors providing operational flexibility across different tasks.

“It is no good going to move a muckheap with the Fastrac,” he says.

“You need to consider the running

costs of each machine to be able to operate efficiently and successfully.”

He says the Deere was his first new tractor purchase, bought with a view to trading up every few years, keeping modern kit protected by warranty.

“The rising cost of tractors has put the brakes on that process and we are now looking to keep kit for longer and, where possible, carry out servicing and repairs ourselves,” he says.

“It is very easy to find yourself working harder just to meet all the demands of machinery finance.

There has to be a balance.”

Haymaking continues at Pyesmead Farm, providing forage for the farm’s own livestock with surplus being sold to local customers. A John Deere 331 mower conditioner and Kuhn 9m tedder provide the flexibility for Rob to manage his forage ahead of another contractor’s baling services.

“We produce 80x90 hay bales at five- and six-foot lengths, plus a selection of conventional bales too,” he says.

“The small bales are handy for customers who come and collect.”

Mr Pybus says both tractors can be used with a variety of trailers, including a dump trailer, and a pair of JPM low-loaders – the latter are required to move equipment between farms.

Where an eight-tonne excavator once offered the best compromise for all-round tasks, he has now extended the mix to include a 1.8t Kubota mini excavator and a larger An extensive selection of attachments for tractor-loaders and excavators has prompted the construction of this storage rack.

“I did have a pair of eight-tonners, but have recently switched to different sized machines to be able to provide different solutions for customers,” he says.

“The eight-tonner remains the most versatile of the lot and the 13-tonner – a low-houred 2008 model JCB JS130 – is our only steel-tracked machine.”

And a new JCB 86C-2 is about to join the fleet, replacing the Kubota KX080-4.

“It is the one machine that does the most work,” he says.

“And with longer greasing intervals, different power modes and the option of a four-way angle blade, this will be a much more capable machine for a wider variety of jobs.”

Digging It did not take long for Mr Pybus to appreciate that a typical excavator is so much more than a machine for digging holes.

“The term digger is so often a miss-leading tag,” he says. “Attachments hold the key to versatility with an excavator. Yes, we do have a range of buckets for each machine, but that tends to pigeon-hole you into just digging holes.”

He says that a rotating tree shear has been a great investment for the 8t excavator, bringing productivity and efficiency to woodland tasks.

“A tree shear is far quicker and safer than reaching for the chainsaw,” he adds.

“It lets you cut down much bigger limbs and trunks that can then be sawn at ground level. And with the excavator’s reach, it is surprising what you can do with this combination.”

He says that a hydraulic flail attachment is another excavator tool that gets a big thumbs up.

“We can manage some fairly overgrown areas with ease, reclaiming areas of land back for their owners,

without having to use one of the tractors,” he says.

“All my excavators have much lower running costs than our tractors, which is an important consideration to make.”

The 8t machine also has access to a land rake – useful for combing through ground - to remove large stones, tree roots and other hidden obstacles. This leaves the surface ready for cultivations.

Bucket options for all three excavators includes those with tilt-rams, which simplifies cutting angles when ditching.

“We have not yet gone for a full-on tilt-rotator on any of the excavators, simply because the cost is difficult to justify,” he adds.

“But we have invested in a clamshell bucket for the 13-tonner, which enables the larger machine to pick and sort through materials for re-use or recycling.”

Next on his wish-list is a vibrating post driver for his newest investment, a Kubota KX019-4 mini excavator.

“This will improve efficiency with fencing tasks,” Mr Pybus says.

“I do have a Protech self-propelled fencing machine, which is brilliant, but when you are out doing a few fence repairs, a vibrating post driver for the mini excavator will be a much more practical solution.”

His operation continues to evolve, adding diversity, but never straying too far from his agricultural roots.

And at every turn, he is constantly looking to build the fleet with technology that can help the business to be much more professional.

When it comes to dealing with labour shortages, he says the business provides full-time employment for operator James Pearse, with Mr Pybus’ father, David, lending a hand at busy times. And Mr Pearse’s fabricating skills have already been put to use making a grading beam to use with the 8t excavator.

“We now have total flexibility with how we approach customers job requests,” Mr Pybus says.

Grimme single pass W hen it comes to single pass potato planting, the UK is only just beginning to catch up with Europe. Here in Britain, potato planting is traditionally a ploughbased routine, which requires an army of tractors deploying ridgers, bed-tiller and de-stoners, working ahead of the planters to prepare the seed bed.

For large-scale growers, this complex operation also requires a melee of support vehicles, including telehandlers, seed trailers, fuel bowsers and (where applicable) liquid fertiliser tanks to keep the planters moving, in addition to the added challenge of dealing with Britain’s unreliable climate.

Some growers however, are beginning to take another approach.

Faced with spiralling input costs and the impending necessity to reduce their carbon footprint, UK farmers faced with these changes are now asking questions about more sustainable options.

An increasing popular solution is to adopt a single pass planting system. One of the companies which has already gained a foothold in this market sector is Grimme.

In many continental markets the Exacta has typically been adopted by smaller growers with more limited resources. More recently however, Grimme UK has noticed an increased demand for this type of system from larger UK growers who are looking for alternatives to eradicate traditional multi-pass planting operations.

Grimme UK potato product specialist, Ed Hodson, says: “A single pass system is not necessarily suitable for land with stone and clod issues. The system is ideally suited to land with good soil structure and good drainage.

“Previously the Grimme Exacta was only available with 75cm row spacing. However with increasing demand from both the French and UK markets Grimme UK is now offering 90cm row spacing as an option.

“Typically we would suggest performing a primary cultivation pass prior to planting. Depending on the soil type and structure the

“One of the benefits of using the Exacta is that the tractor does not require row crop wheels. In practice, although deemed a necessity for most planting systems, narrow row crops actually create compaction which affects surface drainage and root establishment.

“Modern tyres with flexible wall technology are the most effective way of reducing compaction while using a mounted single pass planting system.

“The machine can also be specified with section control, variable seed rate and tramlining to increase the efficiency of the planting operation and improve crop yields.”

and loosen the soil. Located between the tines is a roller which supports some of the weight of the rotary tiller while the machine is planting and also controls the working depth of the tiller.

Preparation The rotary tiller is a Grimme GR300 unit equipped with hook or knife tines, as opposed to the speed blade tines used for incorporation applications. To help soil preparation and level the ground ahead of the planter some farmers use a front linkage mounted power harrow.

Alternatively, farmers can opt to replace the rotary tiller on the planter with a Lemken power harrow although this currently only applies to 75cm models.

The Exacta planting system is essentially identical to other Grimme planters except instead of

dropping the potatoes directly behind the tractor, the system is reversed so the potatoes are planted behind the rotary tiller.

“The planting towers and the cups on the Exacta model are the same Grimme-built components used on all Grimme planters,” says Mr Hodson.

“The advantage of this is not only are we using tried and tested elements but the parts required for maintenance are readily available. Doing this also enables us to incorporate existing technology from other products.

“An example of this is the tramline system which operates automatically. The planted rows adjacent to the tramlines are programmed to increase the seed rate. Tramlines will allow more light into the developing canopies on either side and provide more space for root establishment which will support more crop growth.

“The Exacta also shares the same control screen as other Grimme planters. This can be used as a stand-alone device or using IsoBus connectivity can be linked to the tractor’s control terminal. We find a lot of operators like to split tasks between two screens.”

MACHINERY AND TRACTOR With volatility increasing in the grain and pulse markets, Alex Heath speaks to mobile feed miller James Hamer about the machines he uses and what farmers need to know about on-farm milling and mixing.

Mixing it up

E

stablished in 1988, Glyn Hamer Mill Mix has grown significantly in recent years, offering farmers a cost-effective method of utilising home-grown crops in livestock rations.

Initially operating from its base near Ludlow, Shropshire, the business was set up by Glyn and Heather Hamer, with son James joining the outfit in 2011. The firm now covers a vast area from its current base in Leysters, Herefordshire, travelling past Swindon in the south, Manchester in the north, Stamford in the east and to the Welsh coast in the west.

James says the demand for its service is ever increasing as farmers look to be more self-sufficient and streamlined.

“Milling and mixing your own crops has always be a good way of value adding to cereals operations and have traditionally been the domain of mixed farms. However, with a greater number of poultry and pig farms emerging, we are doing an increasing amount of work on these types of farms.

“The design of machines we are now using has really helped with the amount and types of rations we can create. Our fleet is now entirely made up of Austrian-built Tropper machines.

“We have a good relationship with Tropper. We like the continuous evolution of their machines, each new one is better than the last, with more features and functions to Processed feed can be blown into bins or stockpiled.

Productivity The first continuous twin tank machine was added in 2014, which James describes as a massive step forward in productivity. A second Mega Mix Duo was added in 2015 and a third in 2017. The original has since been replaced and a 10t model sat on a Scania R500 6x2 truck has joined the fleet “Drive for the Tropper is direct off the truck’s engine via a pto. All our trucks are Euro 6 compliant, but the newer ones are more efficient on fuel. They do not have an exhaust gas recirculation valve, unlike the older ones, but use more AdBlue.

“The Tropper then distributes power to all the ancillaries. We have a hydraulic pump, two air

compressors, two types of mill and two mixing tanks on board.

“The first of the mills and most frequently used is the 600mm wide roller mill with 400mm diameter fluted rollers. Most ruminant and poultry diets are processed with this. The crushing gap is infinitely variable allowing a wide variety grains and pulses to be crushed to the desired coarseness.

“A hammer mill with 160 carbide flails is used for diets that require very fine processing, as well as beans.

Interchangeable wire screens affect how small we process the material.”

James says tonnage output when rolling tends to be in the high teens per hour and uses about 35 litres/ hour, while hammer milling is nearer 30t/hour but fuel usage jumps to about 50 litres/hour.

Introducing bulk materials such as the grain, meal and pellets is via a suction hose. This can be connected to two locations. The first is direct to the mills, with a changeover valve directing the grain to whichever processing unit is needed.

“The second bypasses the mills and drops the material straight into the mixing tanks. Predominantly one air compressor is used for suction and blowing when one operation is being carried out at a time.

However, if the machine is being run continuously, by filling, processing and discharging concurrently, a second smaller compressor takes some of the burden by being used to blow the mix through the discharge pipe.

The mixing tanks can be filled in sequence to ensure each has the same constituent if making one big mix, or filled with two separate rations. In each tank, a 450mm diameter auger churns the mix together.

Controlling the whole set-up is managed at the rear, where there is also a small induction hopper for bagged products and a suction pipe for liquids, such as molasses and oils.

The digital screen allows the operator to input the customer’s ration, or it can be uploaded with a memory stick. The system will automatically adjust the percentage of components in the ration by weight to ensure the mix is accurate. Loads can be blown directly into a bin or into a pile, using the double-jointed, rotating blower arm.

The firm visits 80-100 customers per week, processing up to 1,200t in that time. As a result, James says a fourth wagon is on its way to ease the pressure on the rest of the team.

“Poultry units are increasingly turning to us for mixing of their rations. More sheep seem to be about which is also contributing to an increase in demand and preserving damp grains is also a growing area for us,” he says.

The business is a member of the National Association of Agricultural Contractors but sits in a unique position, says James, transporting both agricultural and commercial goods.

“There are many grey areas doing what we do, but we always go above and exceed the regulations. For instance, due to their classification, our trucks can technically be driven by any car licence holder, but we make sure everyone has a Cat C licence, a Certificate of Professional Competence and the trucks are checked once every six weeks.

“Likewise, red diesel is a contentious issue for HGV operations, but being a self propelled machine for agricultural use, we can run on red, because we are not carrying goods, offering a cost competitive option.

boost protein in rations. However, we are seeing more farms growing their own pulses, be it beans, peas or lupins for inclusion in rations. The reason being soya fluctuates greatly and there is a negative perception around it,” he says.

“Likewise, the price of cereals is becoming volatile, so using your own with known production costs is becoming a more popular option.”

“It is important to offer a full range of services. I have been in the business for 50 years and we have been reseeding for much of that. We started with another make, fitted with an electrically driven seeder, and subsequently had two more of those.

“There were a few issues over the years with the harrow frame cracking, and when I came across the Opico harrow, it looked a lot stronger.”

The six-metre Opico Grass Master hydraulic folding grass harrow is part of a range which extends from 1.5 to 12.4m, with three 2m sections linked by a frame which can be hydraulically pressurised to even the tine pressure across the working width.

Adjustable Angle and pressure of the triple coil spring tines is adjustable through 10 positions to match ground conditions.

It is fitted with Opico’s Hatzenbichler Air 16E seeder with electric drive to the metering system and a hydraulic fan to distribute seed through its 16 outlets.

Some 500-600ha per year of grassland is established in this way, with the Davies Brothers team also taking care of the ploughing and power harrowing to prepare the seedbeds.

around 10kph and it has proved very durable - you do get the odd bit of tine damage but that is usually driver error. We have not had to weld the frame at all and we are still on the original set of tines.”

Upgrade The harrow is coming into its seventh season and Mr Davies says he is looking to upgrade it to the latest version.

“We set the tine depth to alter the aggressiveness according to the soil conditions; a marker for the selected depth would be useful.”

He suggests the harrow is the simplest and most versatile way to reseed for a busy grass-focused business, saying it will go on any available tractor as it is not power-hungry.

MACHINERY AND TRACTOR With the grass harvest just around the corner, Jane Carley looks at the latest developments in green harvest machinery.

Latest green harvest updates JOSKIN WAGO BALE TRAILERS JOSKIN has integrated the range of bale trailers brought into its offering after the acquisition of French manufacturer Leboulch.

The Joskin Wago range of bale trailers is divided into galvanised and painted models, using the same basic structure, which is mainly tubular for a better resistance to torsion.

Galvanised bale trailers have a platform equipped with a 4mm high tensile steel sheet with successive ribs along its length to reinforce the strength of the floor. In order to avoid water stagnation, the ribs have holes for cleaning and a quick drainage of liquid. The side edges are slightly sloping, which gives the load more stability.

Finally, the sides are reinforced with longitudinal ribs.

KRONE has launched the new double-arm EasyWrap 165 T round bale wrapper, designed to wrap 1-1.65-metre diameter bales up to 1,650kg.

For optimum bale collection, the hydraulic drawbar can swing to the side and the changeover from road to work position is at the touch of a button. An optional version of the drawbar provides stowage for ten spare film rolls.

An adjustable loading arm places the bale on to the wrapping table and can pick up the next bale while keeping the finished bale on board.

Wrapping is triggered automatically by a sensor and pre-stretch for 750mm film is 55 per cent or 70 per cent. Finished bales can be deposited on the move by tilting the table to the rear, placing them on a rubber mat on the

When the machine reaches the end of its pre-set course it is cleared out completely.

Control is via IsoBus where the operator selects all auto functions and can operate the GX from the ground via a radio remote control.

McHALE has expanded its range of variable chamber balers with the introduction of the V8940 non-chopper baler and the V8950 15-knife chopper baler, designed to produce dense bales from 0.6-1.9 metres in diameter, said to contain 30 per cent more crop in a 1.9m bale than in the company’s 1.68m V6 bale.

New features include a higher capacity intake offered by a new pick-up with a choice of cam track or cam-less designs, larger lateral feed augers and rotor.

Thanks to film’s pre-stretch capabilities, the film-on-film process reduces bale expansion as it leaves the chamber, creating a denser bale than the netwrapped equivalent. And with it, less oxygen is trapped inside the bale, contributing to an improvement in forage quality.

Film-on-film provides additional benefits for farmers when it comes to recycling as disposal requires users only to deal with plastic as a single waste stream – not a combination of plastic with net.

FastBale’s revised film-on-film injection system can also be used with rolls of net. Including rolls in use, the non-stop baler-wrapper has the capacity to carry up to 10 rolls of bale wrap, plus two rolls of either net or film for tying.

POTTINGER BALER UPDATES POTTINGER has updated its Impress baler range, increasing baling pressure by 20 per cent, to give firmer and heavier bales.

The range, which includes solo or wrapping models, as well as variable or fixed chamber designs, can now be upgraded to film-on-film binding. The baler is equipped for film binding using a tail binding unit, with the option of a second binding roll holder for frequent changes between net and film. An optional loading system now supports the

operator when changing the roll.

Impress Pro models get the new Power Control 3.0 terminal with five-inch touch-monitor and membrane keys plus optional camera system.

Wrapper improvements include the ability to rotate the bale before and after the wrapping process to reliably tidy up the ends of the binding and wrapping layers, while film magazines now hold 2 x 8 rolls of wrapping film or 2 x 6 rolls of wrapping film and 2 x 1 roll of binding film.

CLAAS has introduced the Disco 4400 Contour 4.20-metre wide rear-mounted mower, featuring central pivoting and Claas Active Float, which allows the ground pressure of the mower bed to be adjusted from the cab by spool valve while on the move, plus a 120degree folding system for vertical road transport at less than 4m.

The Disco 4400 features the Max Cut mower bed for which there is a double-swath laying option, achieved by placing two

swath drums on the fourth and fifth disc (from the inside) to create one narrower and one wider single swath. This is said to be especially useful on wet or soft ground as it avoids driving on the forage.

Specification also includes hydraulic non-stop collision protection and the vector folding system which folds the mower backwards slightly using the hydraulic break back ram, reducing the transport height.

WIDER REAR MOWER FOR CLAAS

CLAAS has added a new model to its mid-range Torion wheeled loader series. The Torion 1511 P offers more power from a 6.8-litre six-cylinder DPS Stage V engine with a rated output of 228hp and maximum torque of 900Nm at 1,600rpm, said to be ideal for clamp loading.

The Varipower drive features three driving ranges and offers hydraulic braking assistance to reduce wear on the brakes and tyres.

Tyres up to 750/65 R26 and two drive axles with self-locking differentials improve traction and mudguards on the front wheels can be adjusted inwards by up to 10cm to provide an optimum view of the

outer edges of the front wheels when working up against the walls of the clamp.

The Torion 1511 P can be equipped either with P- or Z-boom kinematics and vibration damping.

A high-lift arm option increases the bucket pivot point from 3.93-4.51 metres.

Its loader unit can be operated using the multi-lever control, joystick or multifunction control lever. Maximum available flow rate of the load-sensing hydraulics is 228 litres/minute and the responsiveness of the individual hydraulic functions can be adjusted from the cab. Up to 126 litres/ minute at 200 bar is available to the third and fourth control circuit.
