Conversations in Casta: New Year’s Wishes

Happy New Year! By Liz Rickett, photo by Jeff McCoy The Roman Calendar New Year is celebrated in numerous ways such as stupendous parties on New Year’s Eve, staying up to midnight to watch “the ball drop” in New York’s Times Square, and making New Year’s resolutions. But not many people know about the origins of the month of January. The month of January is named for the ancient Roman god Janus. Janus is a deity in Roman mythology who was often depicted with two faces: one facing the past and one facing the future. Among other attributes, he is known as the god of beginnings, transitions, passages, and doorways. Janus was thought to watch over the passage from the old year to the new, and people would make offerings as well as seek his blessings at this time. This is an apt name for the first month

of the calendar year wherein people can look both to the past and to the future. It is a time of fresh beginnings. So, Happy New Year to the Casta del Sol community. “January is named for the ancient Roman god Janus.”

Phyllis Foglesong, Casta’s Newest Director By Liz Rickett, photo by Jeff McCoy

Phyllis Foglesong Phyllis Foglesong was appointed to the Board in October 2023 to fill a vacancy when a Board Director resigned. A Casta del Sol resident since 2012, she knows the commitment, responsibilities, and time involved with being on the Board of Directors. Her

late husband, Ron Foglesong, served on the Board of Directors from 2019 until his death in 2020. Born and raised in Orange County, Phyllis is a graduate of San Clemente High School. Entering the insurance industry, she worked her way up from policy typist to administrative services manager. She retired in June 2013 as a senior commercial lines underwriter. Phyllis has an associate degree in management from the Insurance Institute of America and a Human Resource Management Certificate from the University of Irvine. In Casta, Phyllis served on the Insurance Committee for two years and volunteered to be on the Social Committee. An avid crafter, she enjoys embroidery, card making, and anything to do with Mickey Mouse. The residents of Casta del Sol thank Phyllis for stepping up for a very important position.

We all know that we set New Year’s resolutions each year that are often broken by the third day. This year, we asked residents, “If you can make a New Year’s Wish, what would it be?” Here are the answers. Mike Bakula wishes to spend more time with his son’s and daughter’s families. Bob Cook wishes for peace while his wife, Judy, wishes for more kindness in the world. Sara Henninger wishes to see her family more and to resolve the oncoming health issues. Barb Turino wishes for her good health. Ren Chen wishes her hearing would improve and wants to improve her attention span. Patti Castro wishes she could eat all the fattening foods without gaining weight. Sherry Hargrove wishes the wars in the Ukraine and Israel would end and there could be peace on earth. Larry Kromling wishes to enjoy another full year of good health. Rita Bernardo wishes for peace on earth and good will to all. The Courier Committee wishes a good 2024 for all our residents.

Highlights of 2023 By Debra Friedman What a Year! 2023 – Filled with Glee. Following the end of the pandemic and the return to “normal” routines for the most part, Casta del Sol residents flocked to parties, activities, and events offered in our stunning community. We had some first-time events such as the Superbowl Party and Paint and Wine Night.

The most extensive facility upgrade was a new fitness center and Garden Room. As a momentous occasion for our newsletter, we celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the Casta Courier, which started as a single page edition called Casta del Sol News. Turn to our Feature of the Month on page 15 for a photo essay of 2023 highlights. Continued on page 15

ASSOCIATION NEWS President’s Message

Manager’s Report

Linda Silverman, President Happy New Year and welcome to 2024. We have celebrated the end of 2023 and made resolutions for the new year of 2024. Some resolutions may be kept, and some resolutions, like giving up chocolate ice cream, are just not possible. The New Year could be a time for new experiences such as a walk through the Heritage Garden with a picnic basket enjoying the serenity of our surroundings, a time to reflect on our families, our loved ones, our friends, and the possibility of new opportunities. This new year could be a time that we explore new ways to enjoy all that Casta del Sol has to give. Think about joining clubs and the many activities that nurture social relationships and develop friendships which help us live long and rewarding lives. Step up to tennis, pickleball, billiards, card games, lunches, political clubs, the vegetable garden, gym, ceramics, and too many more to name. Delve into our many committees that work diligently to maintain our 480 acres of greenbelt, buildings, streets, pools, and various amenities. We are fortunate to have these groups so engaged and comprised of knowledgeable and talented residents that not only serve, but take great pride in our community. Read and enjoy our Casta Courier newsletter which shares our information and illustrates our thriving community. Another resolution for you to explore is to attend Board of Directors meetings in person or on Zoom. Board meetings are held every first Thursday of the month at 9 a.m. and the third Thursday of the month at 1 p.m. Share your thoughts and suggestions. I have said the following statement before, but it merits saying again: We are a large corporation and the residents are the shareholders. Board Members work to make their best decisions regarding all issues knowing and understanding the oath we vowed to maintain at the time we took office. The Board is focused on the needs and well-being of the Homeowners Association. The fiduciary responsibility of every Board of Director is written in stone: • Duty of Care: competent business judgment

We all can just get along. The key is communication. It is often the best way to prevent and resolve conflict before it reaches the legal system. You do not have to be friends or spend time together to achieve a peaceful coexistence, but you should try to be a good neighbor and follow these tips: • Say hello. At the mailbox, while walking the dog or when you see a moving van arrive, introduce yourself. Learn your neighbors’ names and regularly offer a friendly greeting. • Provide a heads up. If you are planning a construction project, altering your landscaping or hosting a big party, contact your neighbors beforehand. • Do unto others. Treat neighbors as you would like to be treated. Be considerate about noise from vehicles, music, pets, etc. • Know your differences. Try to understand each other. Differences in ethnic background and years in the neighborhood can lead to different expectations or possible misunderstandings. • Consider the view. Keep areas of your property that others can see presentable. • Appreciate them. If the neighbors do something you like, let them know. They’ll be pleased you noticed, and it’ll be easier to talk later if they do something you do not like. • Stay positive. Most people don’t try to create problems. If a neighbor does something that irritates you, do not assume it was deliberate. • Talk honestly. Tolerance is important, but do not let a real irritation go because it seems unimportant or hard to discuss. Let your neighbors know if something they do annoys you. • Be respectful. Talk directly to Continued next column

• Duty of Loyalty: loyal to the Association • Duty of Obedience: act in best interests of the Association • Duty of Impartiality: no potential conflict of interests or personal gains. Basically, these duties are the financial, ethical, and moral judgments for the betterment of the corporation. The last resolution is that I wish everyone a very Happy, Healthy, Prosperous and Wonderful New Year.

Maintenance Report

Bill Thornton, Landscape Services Coordinator

Wildlife South Orange County has many native and introduced species of animals that normally do not disturb our lives. However, from time to time they can remind us of the reality of where we live. Big cats, coyotes, opossum, raccoons, birds, snakes, skunks, rodents, bees, fire ants, etc., do not respect the property rights of humans. They will live and continue to survive in a natural balance with or without homeowners association walls. There are steps we all must take to protect our pets and property. The Orange County Vector Control, www.ocvector.org, and the Department of Fish and Game, www.wildlife. ca.gov, have literature available to homeowners that can help prepare for various encounters with wildlife. The OC Vector Control has some important information on mosquitos that everyone should read. I recently met the new OC Vector Control inspector, Robert Lostaunau, for fire ant control near the water tanks. Owners that see large mounds of dirt with ants can call Continued on page 4

Caution: Parking by Storm Drains By parking too close to a storm drain, right up against the curb, it is possible to damage your vehicle, scraping the wheels and fender. Additionally, passengers exiting a car parked next to a storm drain could easily lose their footing due to the uneven and sloped surfaces. Because of these concerns, parking next to any storm drain should be avoided unless absolutely necessary. If you must park near one, for your own safety, please exercise extreme caution.

(949) 654-2421. The HOA does not provide any ant control. Sealing up cracks and blocking any area that allows pests to enter your home, as well as removing items stored outside, will save you a lot of headaches in the future. The most important recommendation is to keep pets and food safe inside. Don’t put out birdseed or grow veg-

etables around your home because rats, opossums, and squirrels love to feed on them. Squirrels have been increasing in Casta in the last couple of years. The HOA has 25 squirrel bait stations, but no trapping takes place. Melissa Chavez with Allure Pest informed us that tree squirrels are protected, and you need a special license and permission from Fish and Game that general pest control companies do not have. The bait stations are for ground squirrels. Be aware of your surroundings. Taking some simple precautions will help to protect you and your neighbors from unwanted stress. And, please take the time to read the rules and regulations in the phone directory for more information on what your HOA does and does not provide for services. ASSOCIATION NEWS Cont’d iGate Visitor Management System Essentials By Parizad Sethna, photo by Fred Lake Representatives from our gate concierge company, Allied Universal Security visited Casta del Sol for a presentation on November 7. They held a very informative session regarding the new iGate Visitor Management System for residents. The new software is quite versatile and easy to use. The software can easily be accessed via web and/or downloaded as an app on a smart phone. While the phone app version provides the necessary options for registering visitors, vendors and guests, the web version provides many additional options, for example, residents can register their pets. In case a registered pet is lost and later found by security personnel, they will try to locate its owner. Another impressive feature of the software is “status” update that can be found on the drop-down menu. It allows users to change settings under “Residence,” and update their “Status” to indicate: • Normal (default): HOA Guest Policy applies • Secluded: Allow permanent vendors

and permanent guests only • Limited Access: Resident approval of all guests required • Locked: No guests allowed Another feature is the software’s ability to provide a QR code to guests/ vendors which allows for faster entry at the gates. For this feature, residents need to provide the phone number and email address of their guests/vendors when registering them. The system will automatically send a QR code to the guests/vendors, similar to an electronic airline boarding pass which speeds up entry. The software is integrated with Google Maps to automatically print directions to the residence on the gate pass. Key descriptions: Permanent Guests: Guests in this group will be granted 60-day access. Upon expiration, the gate pass will automatically be updated for the next 60 days. Future Planned Guests and Vendors: Guests and vendors in this group

will be granted access for the range of dates specified. After the date range has expired, the gate attendant is required to call the resident for approval before permitting entry. Daily Vendors: Vendors in this group will be granted access on the specified date only. Restricted: Persons placed on this list will be denied access to the resident’s home. Detailed instructions on how to add guests, vendors, etc., are available via the iGate web page under the “Home” tab and then click “HOA Documents.”

Access to the iGate web version is through the Casta del Sol website at https://castadelsol.powerstonepm.com. Clip and save this article for future reference.

COMMITTEES OF THE BOARD Architectural It is hard to believe that another year has come and gone. Here we are in 2024, time for New Year’s resolutions. All committees in Casta del Sol are important and need volunteers in the coming year. The Architectural Committee is the only one that is specifically required by the Covenants, Conditions and Restrictions, so its oversight of our exteriors is extremely important. That is why we need residents who are interested in maintaining our Standards and Guidelines for the exteriors of our buildings. We are looking for proactive members who are willing to give of their time, interest, and knowledge for our community. We meet on the first Tuesday of the month in the Fiesta Room at 1 p.m. In order to process your applications quickly and more efficiently, we also meet every Friday at 10 a.m. in the Garden Room. Please make your resolution to become active in the Casta del Sol Architectural Committee. We need you in 2024. John Nicsinger, Co-Chair, (818) 261-5316

Budget and Finance The Budget and Finance (B&F) Committee reviewed the November financials at our December meeting. In January, we will begin our yearend financial statement review since our fiscal year-end is December 31. This process takes a few months and will be ready for Board review and approval in April. All residents are welcome to attend the B&F meetings. The Budget and Finance Committee meets regularly on the third Monday of each month at 1 p.m. Our next meeting is scheduled to be on January 22 due to the holiday on January 15. Please look for the eblasts with additional details. Happy New Year! Lisa Shoemaker, Chair, (949) 305-6336

COMMITTEES OF THE BOARD Cont’d Courier 2023 was a year of changes that were captured in the Casta Courier newsletter. We said “Goodbye” to Josh Hodosh who had been in Casta del Sol management for 20 years. We are also saying farewell to PWLC1, our landscape contractor since 2000. We welcomed a new General Manager, Marilyn Smith, and a new landscape contractor, O’Connell Landscape. Casta del Sol has thrived in many ways. We have a much-improved fitness center, Garden Room, and Chippers Shed. We had several new and very successful Social Committee events including a sock hop, fashion show/tea party, and Halloween party. New Casta del Sol committee chairs and co-chairs were appointed, and several new clubs were formed. For the Casta Courier specifically, Judy Clendenin, the Casta Courier Editor-in-Chief since 2010, retired. We have a new Editor-in-Chief, Charlotte Lassos, who has completed her first year. We gained several new committee members, and two members left the committee due to a move. In 2023, the Casta Courier celebrated its 50th Anniversary. The original newsletter, called the Casta del Sol News, commenced in 1973 as an 8½” by 11” single page newsletter. The Casta Courier is now a 28 to 32-page large-size newsletter that includes Association News, club and activity events, profiles of our residents, and much more. The Courier Committee is looking forward to capturing all the highlights during 2024. The Courier has a talented and enthusiastic staff who strive to produce an excellent and error-free newsletter on time, every month. Debra Friedman, Chair, debrafriedman0@gmail.com

Election This year four Board of Directors positions are up for election. Applications to run for a Board seat will be available to homeowners on March 1. The deadline to submit an application will be April 1. A “Nomination General Notice,” which includes procedures for submitting candidate nominations, will be posted on the Casta del Sol website and the HOA Bulletin Boards on February 23. At the Election Committee’s De-

cember meeting Additional Election Rules 2 of Election Operating Rules for CdS was amended to include the new Civil Code Section 5115 (d) (2) requirement: If quorum requirements are not met for the specified Membership Meeting or election, the meeting will be adjourned and rescheduled at least 20 days after the adjourned proceeding, at which time the purposes of a membership meeting to elect directors shall be 20 percent of the association’s voting members. The Election Committee also reviewed its 2024 calendar dates which were then sent to the Board of Directors for approval. Jeff McCoy, Chair, jmactr1@gmail.com

Greenbelt I wish to express my thanks to all former Greenbelt Chairs and committee members who have endeavored to make this community a wonderful place to live. Normally the Greenbelt Committee meeting is held on the second Tuesday of the month, but for the month of January the first meeting of the new year will be held on Tuesday, January 16, at 1 p.m. in the Fiesta Room. In late 2023, the Board of Directors and the new landscape contractor, O’Connell Landscape Maintenance, were hard at work finalizing the last-minute details of the new threeyear landscape contract. O’Connell has more than 50 years’ experience in the Southern California area. At the time of this article, a new customer landscape request phone number for homeowners was not yet in place. That information will come forth as the new contractor settles in. To keep this process as smooth as possible, please fill out a service request form located in the Administration building, Rec Ctr 1. You may also contact Bill Thornton, Landscape Services Coordinator, bthornton@powersto nepm.com. Financial responsibility is a key component for the Greenbelt Committee in 2024. Planned projects will continue to take place throughout the new year with emphasis placed on both “needs” and “wants.” I look forward to working with my fellow committee members and the Casta del Sol Board in 2024. Happy New Year. Randy Gish, Chair, gishra@sbcglobal.net

Library

Social

Questions are being asked about some of our policies; we will try to answer them. One question is whether or not the library accepts donated books. The answer is yes; we accept donated fiction books in good shape, so bring them in. Another question revolves around our fairly new reservations program. We are still working out some bugs, but a recent upgrade to the HLM Library software advises us of overdue books and will not allow the borrower to reserve another book until their overdue book is returned. After your overdue book has been returned, please resubmit your reservations request. The Library Committee has voted on a policy to authorize new book groups. If you are interested in starting up a new book group under the auspices of the Library Committee, we will publish instructions in the Courier as soon as the Board approves this policy. Thank you for your patience.

Our New Year’s Eve extravaganza All That Glitters Disco Ball was a wonderful way to start the New Year. The Vista Room was in full holiday mode with decorations galore. Our Christmas tree and Hannukah table were bright and shiny, and our residents showed off their sparkle with sequins and dazzle. The band Sideways played a fabulous mixture of songs to entertain and to dance to. The food, catered by Martinez, once again did not disappoint with a choice of tri-tip, salmon, or eggplant. That, along with salad, rolls, and dessert ensured that all were well fed. The photo booth was a big hit as always and allowed everyone to have a photo memory of the party. I want to thank Valerie Hanich for assisting us in ensuring this celebration was such a tremendous success. And a special Thank You to all the hardworking members of the Social Committee for the time and effort they put into planning and implementing our ideas for our community’s enjoyment. Welcome Welcome as always to newcomers in the community. We would like to meet you. Members of the Welcome Committee contact new residents to arrange a meeting and provide a packet of information about the many activities, clubs, and committees in Casta del Sol and to answer your questions. If you have not yet been contacted by one of our members and wish to meet, you may email me to arrange a time and place to get together with one or two of us. Welcome to Casta once again and we hope you enjoy exploring and finding your way around the community. We look forward to meeting each one of you. Priscilla Tripp, Chair, ptripp1@gmail.com

CLUBS & ACTIVITIES Bible Study Any resident of Casta del Sol who has an interest in participating in the study of the Bible is welcome to join us. This is an active group of folks from different churches. Our studies are varied, but always Bible-oriented. We examine and/or question the study of the day, but always keep the discussion on topic from the Bible. The club meets at Rec Ctr 2 every Tuesday morning from 10 to 11:30 a.m. for study and prayer. Come and join us as we sing the old hymns. We are a no-dues club. All are welcome. For more information, please contact Peter Filakouridis at (949) 305-1935. Billiards It is supposed to be winter in Southern California, but as I write this in early December, it is 84 degrees outside. The Billiards Room, however, is a comfortable 73 degrees; just one more reason to take advantage of a great Casta offering. I hope you all had a great holiday season and have

started on your list of New Year’s resolutions. It’s the perfect chance to commit to taking up a new and easy sport. We are seeing more and more community interest in billiards games. This easygoing and enjoyable game is fun to learn and play and helps develop motor skills and eyehand coordination. The games are not complicated and anyone, regardless of physical shape and fitness level, can jump right in and learn to play. All the necessary equipment is there, and the tables are classic nine-foot tables in pristine condition. Come on down, have some fun and make new friends. Fred Wilmott, BilliardsCdS@cox.net, (949) 367-6671

Bridge Happy New Year 2024! The Tuesday duplicate games in the Garden Room welcomed a couple of new teams in 2023; welcome additions who have done very well. Duplicate begins at noon each Tuesday. Stop by Rec Ctr 1 to see if duplicate might be something for you. Duplicate Bridge at CdS is unsanctioned by the ACBL. Before Covid, the Monday gathering for party bridge was well populat-

ed but has never been restarted, even with Covid behind us. The Wednesday noon party bridge gathering has a generally fixed membership but occasionally requires substitutions. There is apparently no fixed room location available; check with Rec Ctr 1 office for the location each week. If you would like to be a regular or substitute player, please email me with your availability for Party/Duplicate, or Both. Please include “bridge” in the subject line and, again, Happy New Year! Tim McCoy, mccoytest@cox.net

core vaccinations are up to date, sick dogs should stay at home, evaluate attending large dog functions and avoid communal water bowls. While California is not one of the heavily impacted areas, I think that our Casta Canine affairs should not be impacted. Please be reminded of our first gathering of the New Year on Saturday, January 27 for Linda’s Chili. Our gathering will be from 1-3 p.m. at the Rec Ctr 2 Lawn Bowling Pavilion. Please RSVP. Canine Companions Casta Creatives Wishing you all the happiest and most healthful New Year. And speaking of health, the not so new news but worth repeating is from our AVSG Internal Medicine and Care Unit forewarning of the impact of CIRDC or Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease which spreads through respiratory droplets and is caused by viruses or bacteria –formerly known as Kennel Cough. Their recommendation is to avoid high population settings, ensure

Our Annual Meeting on November 30 was well attended, and we welcomed many potential members interested in the world of art at Casta del Sol. We introduced our officers: President Jacki Keller, Vice President Jeff Ponce, Secretary Debra Friedman, Treasurer Julie Yates, and Social Coordinator Sue Menchel. We are looking forward to 2024 events including demonstrations, workshops, Paint and Wine events, and field trips Continued on page 12

Ceramics Now that the turkey has become soup, every piece of wrapping paper is recycled and every strand of tinsel – well, what do we do with tinsel?

It’s plastic with a silver finish, right? So, not organic, certainly! But if it’s plastic, it should go in the trash or – maybe, the recycle bin if it’s a certain type of plastic. But what about the metal coating; what is that? It used to be lead but, no, they outlawed that in the 60s. Forget it! Let’s just leave it on the tree and let someone else figure it out. So, you thought the stress of the holidays was over? Come play in the mud with us. The art of ceramics has been associated with relieving stress, killing pain, increasing happiness and emotional stability, reducing symptoms of certain mental disorders and arthritis symptoms. So other than the fact that we’re a very congenial club, you might find a new way to control your cortisol level! Join us! Jo Steciuk, (949) 394-5181

Crafts For Charity The Craft Ladies of Casta del Sol recently delivered holiday items to the Age Well group at the Norman P.

Murray Center, who handle Meals on Wheels. The ladies will start out the new year with Valentine’s packages for the residents of Laura’s House, which provides help for domestic violence victims. We also will put the finishing touches on Valentine’s tray favors for the recipients of Meals on Wheels in Mission Viejo. We meet on the first and third Wednesday of each month from 10 a.m. to noon at Rec Ctr 2. Club meetings this month will be on January 3 and 17. We welcome new project ideas and potential recipients. Stop by when you can and lend a hand. Materials will be supplied, and you’ll be shown what to do. It’s a great way to meet your neighbors and make new friends while helping others. Jessica Hollowell, (310) 480-9093

Cribbage We play cribbage each Thursday in the Heritage Room at Rec Ctr 2 from 6:30 until about 8:45 p.m. If you are interested in learning to play this old English card game, any of our members would be willing to teach you on a one-to-one basis, or we can do it on a Thursday evening; it’s really not that complicated. You just need to be able to count to 31. If you have ever played in the past, the rules will quickly come flooding back; just come on down for a few games and a general social evening. There is no sign-up or commitment. If you want more information, contact Susan Herrning. Susan Herrning, susanherrning@aol.com, (949) 630-2565

Democrats The next Casta del Sol Democrats Club meeting is on January 21 at 3 p.m. in the Vista Room. We plan to have two candidates who are running for state congress in the primary. In February, we will have our New Year kick-off party. The club officers will be planning presentations and topics for additional meetings in 2024. We are also looking into writing postcards and reaching out to our friends and neighbors to help candidates get elected. Generally, the meetings will be on the third Sunday of the month at 3 p.m. in the Vista Room. Building camaraderie among attendees is an important aspect of our meetings. For regular meetings, please bring a potluck dish

and/or beverage to share. We are hoping to expand our membership, especially in this important election year. Please encourage friends and neighbors to join. Currently, we are a no-dues club. If you would like to receive emails, please let me know. Debra Friedman, debrafriedman0@gmail.com, (949) 230-7195

Health & Fitness Announcing a new Casta Fitness Class: Balance. We now offer residents three classes per week that really focus on our needs as seniors: Balance (Mondays, 10:30 a.m.), Stretching (Tuesdays, 10 a.m.), Mat Pilates (Wednesdays, 11:30 a.m.) A study in the Journal of Gerontology concluded: “Community-based programs focusing on moderate-intensity endurance and strengthening exercises or flexibility exercise can be delivered through a combination of formats that result in improvement in important functional and well-being outcomes. This represents one of the first studies to report significant improvements in an important quality of life outcome – bodily pain – with a regular regimen of stretching and flexibility exercises in a community-based sample of older adults.” Come join us! Reserve a spot or just drop by to participate or observe. More info: contact Helen Freedman. Helen Freedman, PelicanPost123@yahoo.com, (646) 662-7325

Republican Happy New Year! We hope everyone had a blessed and happy holiday season. The club is working on new events for the coming year. We do not yet have confirmation of event dates but will let you know as soon as we do. Since the 2024 Presidential Primary for California is March 5, we are working hard to secure speakers in early February. You will be notified once this is scheduled.

The club hopes to continue to provide its members with stimulating and informative information about what is happening in the Republican Party. Please stay tuned. As we have completed another year, it becomes necessary to replenish the treasury to continue to provide our events at no charge. There is no increase in the dues for the year, which remain at $10 individual and $15 per couple. Thank you for your continued support. Betty Houston, (626) 422-0771

Social Singles If you are a Casta del Sol resident who is single, you are invited to join our singles group. We have no membership dues. In January, we will be meeting for lunch on Thursday, January 11 at 1 p.m. at Antonucci’s in Mission Viejo. To reserve your seat at the table, please RSVP only to Carol Kowalsky (cekewpie1@cox.net) by Monday, January 8. If you would like to join the group and get on our email list, or for more information, please contact Mary Carlson. Mary Carlson, marycarlson28@gmail.com, (949) 380-0744

Sol Rock ‘n Rollers Vegetable Garden It was a standing room only event on December 3 as we welcomed a large group of performers from Cal State Fullerton to CdS for a free Holiday, Broadway, and Jazz Concert. One of our own talented residents, Marge Osborn, led the Voce de Oro Chorale and set up this entire program for our enjoyment. The Bruce, Brass, and Friends Jazz Combo joined the chorale for a beautiful afternoon of music, kicking off our holiday season. Many thanks to Marge for bringing this afternoon of song to all of us. Sol Rock ‘N Rollers thank our residents for the support of our newly formed club this year. We are busy working on the coming year. We have enjoyed showcasing new artists to our community. Please be in touch if you have something to share. We love new opportunities for fun together. Donna Farris, dbfarris117@gmail.com, (949) 378-6158

Support Group If you experience grief because of losing a loved one, losing independence due to illness, aging, or caring for a loved one, this is a place for emotional support, sharing experiences and hearing similar situations. You are not alone on your journey. Come and meet others in similar seasons and situations. We meet twice a month. For more information, contact Kathy Wu. Kathy Wu, Kathywu.mv@gmail.com, (818) 590-8009

Variety The Casta del Sol Variety Club’s live performances and the recent Twilight Zone movie have been very well attended and have received accolades. We are planning our next event to take place from May 31 to June 2. It will be a humorous show based on a wellknown musical. This senior-oriented twist on the musical will be directed by Bear Sanchez and Barb Turino. Watch for announcements about our first meeting/casting call in March. The Variety Club is so much fun that we keep adding to our family of performers. If you are interested in joining us, please contact Barb Turino at (951) 858-7350. Debra Friedman, debrafriedman0@gmail.com, (949) 230-7195

Happy New Year! This last year went by so fast. The executive council would like to thank all members for keeping their gardens so well maintained plus contributing produce to the food bank. A walk in the garden will reveal gardens with cabbage, broccoli, onions, garlic, cauliflower, and other winter crops. We look forward to another year of bountiful harvests. At this writing, 23 people are waiting for a lot. Happy gardening. Michael Schlesinger, mikeschles123@gmail.com, (914) 815-1002

Woodworkers December was a quiet month for Woodworkers Club members. We completed all our repair and project requests. One or two of the repair requests could not be completed because of our lack of having the correct tools, the materials needed were not available, or the object was in such bad shape that it could not be repaired. Most of the club members worked to complete their own personal projects for the holidays. We have hopes that circumstances will change in 2024, but, until then we will continue to meet on Monday afternoons at 2 p.m. in the Rec Ctr 1 Arts and Crafts Room located across from the Vista Room. Drop by if you have a wood project request or are interested in our activities. Steve Vallely, (714) 595-5766

Water Exercise Happy New Year! We had a really successful 2023; our member numbers went up, and we had so many more joining us daily. The health benefits from exercising cannot be denied. And, it has been proven that social contact is also a necessary component of staying healthy in these golden years, and we really do have that down pat! Join us Monday through Friday in Pool 1 at 9 a.m. for our Water Exercise class. To become a member, you will need to go to the office, sign a waiver and bring a check; it’s only $10 for the year. We look forward to seeing you in the pool. Nan Rednall, nrednall@gmail.com (949) 584-4321

Happy New Year! We anticipate starting tournament play again in February. We are in the process of negotiating with golf courses to host our tournaments for 2024. Many courses have become cost prohibitive. If you have any suggestions of courses we could play and that will fit into our current cost and travel requirements of $70 and 70 max miles from Casta del Sol, please let me know and I will check out the availability. Look forward to seeing you in 2024. Joyce Parlin, (949) 588-0337

We are about a third of the way through the season and it is a very close race with Pin Pals (Cynthia, Tom, Maureen, and Don) being only one point ahead of Team 1 (Kathy, Yolanda, Brian, and Robert). There is still plenty of time left for any of the other teams to overtake either of these teams. The Casta del Sol Bowling league bowls on Thursdays at 1 p.m. at Saddleback Lanes on Marguerite Parkway in Mission Viejo. If you do not want to commit to bowling every week, you could join our list of subs; we can always use more subs. Just call Donna Miller at (949) 395-8958. If interested in checking out how much fun we have, you can always stop by on Thursday at 1 p.m. at Saddleback Lanes. Van Quinn, (949) 842-9151

Bocce Ball Wishing you all a very Happy New Year. I hope that our members will continue to come to our monthly meetings. Attendance has improved but could be even better. Afternoon bocce has been great with lots of laughs. Come on down and join in the fun. Dues remain $10 per year and are payable now at Rec Ctr 1. Our next meeting will be on Monday, February 5 at 7 p.m. in the Fiesta Room. Following a short business meeting, we will be playing Bingo. Carol Zinsmeister, (949) 305-9890

Please be aware that too many stray golf balls have been found outside the golf area. This safety issue needs cooperation from everyone who uses the area. So, please use only short chip shots and take great care. Thank you. Any questions? Just call. Bob Hrad, (949) 290-0366

Lawn Bowling In November, our Club hosted the Southwest Bowls Ladies Day tournament; it was a tremendous success. There were almost 50 women bowling across all eight lanes (rinks) of the beautifully manicured lawn bowling green. With everyone dressed in tournament white, the day was not only colorful, but intense. The husband of our HOA president was on site taking photos. The full story of the tournament will be covered in the next issue of the Courier. For the edification of all, we now bowl at 1 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. And with the onset of the new year, I’m sure many of us have made the resolution to get more exercise. We have been training a few of our prospective new members on an as-needed basis after finishing our

MWF games at about 2:30 p.m. Free personal instruction is also available by calling Mr. Shuman Chan, (626) 428-0250. Roman Swystun, (818) 669-9970

Men’s Golf The popularity of golf has increased tremendously since the pandemic. The public was encouraged to engage in outdoor physical activity in a relatively safe environment. As with most well-meaning changes, the sport experienced some adjustments. Despite these circumstances, our club has increased its membership from 89 to 136 since 2022. We are very fortunate to have positive relationships with the governing bodies and our home course. Our thanks to them and to our membership. The January games are: 1/3 - Blind Nine Holes; 1/10 - Twosome Best Ball; 1/17 - Individual Low Net; 1/24 - Team Best Ball; 1/31 - Team Scramble. If you are interested in becoming a member, please contact our membership chairman Al Arnott at (714) 425-4320. Best wishes for a Happy New Year and great golf. Merl Barrett, (949) 770-5024

Pickleball The Pickleball and Paddle Tennis Clubs combined to hold a joyous SoCal Holiday party on December 2. Highlights included a fine meal, drinks, entertainment, and dancing. A best-dressed contest, door prizes, and a raffle enabled many to become winners of seasonal gifts. Please remember that 2024 club dues are $10 per person. They should be paid by January 31 at the Rec Ctr 1 office by check payable to the CdS Pickleball Club. Dues allow the club to fund tournaments and social events, and to buy balls for open play. The Club has reserved the courts every Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 8 to 10 a.m., and every Monday and Wednesday from 4 to 6 p.m. Come join us at Rec Ctr 2 for some fun action. Loaner paddles are available and club members will help get you introduced to this exciting game. Eric Vanderslice, (562) 712-1225

Tennis The Tennis Club’s annual Holiday extravaganza was a jingling success with a tantalizing array of appetizers, entrees, and tempting desserts. All of these culinary treats were accompanied by the lively sounds of the Chris Daniels Project band. The Tennis Club’s annual meeting was held recently and all of the club’s activities and finances were reviewed. The 2024 Tennis Club board members were also elected at this meeting. This enthusiastic group is now planning an exciting and entertaining series of oncourt and off-court events for the year. Although cooler weather is now with us, the Tennis Club continues to offer a variety of morning and evening group-playing opportunities. Morning sessions (8 a.m.) are held on Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday. The first Saturday of each month includes Clarity Tips along with coffee and breakfast munchies. The third Saturday of the month features local pro Jimmy Gleason with stimulating drills and tennis fun. Roger Gyger, (630) 430-9045

Puns For Fun Compiled by Jeff McCoy “You need to be careful when writing comments,” our principal told the faculty. He held a report card for Susan Crabbe. A colleague had written, “Susan is beginning to come out of her shell.” You know you are old when the oxygen masks drop from the ceiling when your birthday candles are lit. My girlfriend walked out on me for being too old-fashioned. I thought we had good alchemy.

CASTA COMMUNITY On the Road Again Moulton Museum New to SoCal, too busy to explore, or perhaps time to revisit? Debra offers suggestions. Debra Friedman What a gem of a museum here in our midst. The Moulton Museum is housed in a strip mall in Laguna Hills. It is chock full of historical posters, artwork, furniture, vehicles, and artifacts. The story began when 20-year-old Lewis Moulton emigrated from Boston to Orange County on a daring adventure to raise sheep. He partnered with Mr. Daguerre in 1874 on a sheep farm and later transitioned to cattle. One day, upon a visit to a general store in El Toro, Lewis met Nallie Gail and the love story of this power couple emerged.

Reflections of a Casta Neighbor A new resident explores the adventures of Casta. Nevin Valentine The image of a little girl continues to replay in a scene inside my mind. She is in her first-grade classroom attempting to cut snowflakes out of paper. The teacher’s model of a perfectly cut snowflake hangs on the bulletin board. She struggles with the folding and cutting of the snowflake. Failing to achieve perfection, she gives up. The little girl in this scene was me. For years I held on to the limiting belief that I was bad at art. Later in life, as a teacher, I presented my students with a different message. Everyone has artistic abilities, and expressing and appreciating one’s creativity are at the core of living an expanded life. At Casta del Sol, there are a myriad of ways to immerse ourselves in artistic expressions, both as creators and admirers. Each month in our library, the cultural center of Casta, there is

The Moultons had two children – Charlotte and Louise. Fortunately for historians, Louise retained loads of family treasures obtained by the Moulton Museum. In 1972, much of the original Moulton land that covered Laguna Hills, Laguna Niguel, Laguna Woods, and Aliso Viejo was sold off. What remains is 10 acres along Cabot Road. The goal of the Moulton Museum is to keep the history of Orange County and its ranching era alive. Some of my favorite items are maps of land grants, a buggy, saddles, vintage trunks, telegraph equipment, a typewriter, and gramophone. This is impressive for a museum that is only one year old. There are plans to expand an exhibit dedicated to women in ranching. The lives of Lewis Moulton and Nellie Gail are so fascinating and there is so much content that a revisit to the museum is inevitable. The museum is open on Tuesdays and Thursday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. when well informed and personable docents will provide a guided tour.

an art exhibit showcasing one of our neighbor’s works. It was at such an exhibit where I first saw Sue Menchel’s collages. The little girl in me was immediately drawn to the whimsical and profound layering of her art pieces, with messages imbedded in her creative themes. I am now grateful to have two of Sue’s creations, purchased at Casta events: a painting, in the vein of Andy Warhol, of a Campbell’s soup can with flowers and Sue’s unique depiction of an angel. The Ceramics Club Holiday Boutique presented another opportunity for artists and art lovers to mingle. As I entered the Vista Room, Claire Ready was just leaving, thrilled with her armful of clever potholders, crafted by Karen Warren. Claire planned to bring them to a family gathering in Boston where they would serve as lap holders for hot soup. I stopped by the tables of Jayne Freed, Myrna Smith, and Ann Loranger to admire their exquisite handmade cards. Also on display, custom designs by some of our woodworkers, colorful ceramic pieces, and an abundance of paintings and distinctive crafts. What an artistic community we are, and I am certain no one copied a model of a snowflake to create their art.

Small Talk Outdoor Holiday Decorations A freelance writer’s humorous spin on the ups and downs of life. Dorothy Frances I’ve always enjoyed decorating for the holidays. Every year, the inside of our house looked like a holiday wonderland. There were Santas, nutcrackers, reindeer, and every other kind of holiday decoration you can think of. The star of the show was always the tree, which included ornaments collected over the years, especially the treasured ones made by our children, and gifts from relatives and special friends. Then there was the outside of the house. I wish I could say it matched the holiday spirit that shone inside the house, but, alas, my husband had

Orecchiette Pasta with Butternut Squash and Sausage 5 Tbsp. extra virgin olive oil 3 garlic cloves, peeled and minced 2 Italian sausages, removed from casings and crumbled 1 lb. butternut squash, cut into ½ inch cubes 1 Tbsp. oregano ½ to 1 cup Butternut Squash Pasta Sauce 10 oz. orecchiette 1 cup frozen shelled edamame ½ cup grated parmesan cheese basil, julienned for topping hot red pepper flakes, optional

an aversion to putting up lights and decorations outside. Bah humbug! In desperation, I finally bought large, red velvet bows and hung them from the bushes in the front yard, so it looked somewhat festive. Things rolled along in that fashion at our house for years until . . . the grandchildren came along. One Saturday, my husband went off to the local hardware store, which wasn’t unusual as he was always puttering in the garage. While he was out, I left to do some shopping. When I came back hours later, I couldn’t believe my eyes. Our house was strung with cheerful lights and there were reindeer that lit up, as well as an adorable holiday train. Stunned, I saw my husband standing there with a huge smile. When our kids came over for our holiday celebration, they said they thought they were at the wrong house. The moral? Never underestimate the magical power of grandchildren.

Bring a pot of salted water to boil for cooking pasta. Combine olive oil, garlic, and sausage in large nonstick skillet. Cook, stirring occasionally, until sausage is cooked through. Remove sausage to a bowl with slotted spoon. Toss butternut squash with olive oil, salt and pepper into same pan. Cook until browned and fork tender, approximately 12-15 minutes. Cook pasta in pot until al dente. Drain and save some pasta water to add to mixture. Add pasta to squash/ sausage mixture. Toss with a little pasta water, edamame and Butternut Squash Pasta Sauce and oregano. Season with salt and pepper. Divide into serving bowls and top with parmesan, basil, and red pepper flakes (optional). 2 Servings. Butternut Squash Pasta Sauce is available on Amazon. It is delicious on any kind of pasta or ravioli.

Board Meeting Minutes The Casta del Sol Board minutes of the two meetings per month are available about two weeks after each meeting online at castadelsol.com. If you are unable to attend a Board meeting or watch it on Zoom, you can read the minutes and be current with information about CdS.

PEOPLE, PLACES & EVENTS Veterans Salute on Pearl Harbor Day By Debra Friedman, photo by Fred Lake

The first December Board of Director’s meeting was held on Pearl Harbor Day. The Casta del Sol Military Veteran’s Club, at the request of the Board of Directors, led the meeting in the Pledge of Allegiance. The 11 members either put their hand over their heart or saluted the American flag. One Navy Veteran, was in full regalia, while others wore the Club’s hats and/or shirts. We thank the participating Military Veteran’s Club members for this touching and solemn moment.

Recently Remodeled Residences: Sue and Sig Menchel By Debra Friedman, photos by Jeff McCoy Sue and Sig Menchel moved to Casta del Sol in 2020. Sue immediately had distinct ideas for remodeling their home. Sue is an artist and had a previous career in kitchen and bath design. She still does some consulting work in interior design. The first large project they decided to tackle was the bathrooms.

They love the layout of their Flora Model but the floor plan has a larger guest bath than primary bedroom bath. These two bathrooms are adjacent so they were able to make the primary bathroom 10 inches larger, taking the space from the guest bathroom. The guest bathroom was Guest Bathroom updated with a modern gray/white theme. It has a single basin sink with quartz countertop and a built-in mirror with a shelf. They demolished the bathtub and installed a standing shower with gray/white patterned tile on the shower wall and hexagonal marble-like tile on the shower pan. Although this bathroom is now a bit smaller, it is still very functional. Primary Bathroom The en suite bathroom that became larger transitioned from a single to a double sink. The wall separating the shower and toilet was removed. This bathroom also changed from a tub to a standing shower. Both bathrooms have the same tiles and countertops, creating a cohesive effect. The primary bedroom bath also contains closets which had their mirrored doors transformed. During the twelve-week renovation work, there was always a bathroom available. However, the lengthy process did test Sue and Sig’s patience. With enough time to recover from the ordeal, the Menchel’s are about ready to tackle a remodel of their kitchen in order to open up walls and change the configuration.

PEOPLE, PLACES & EVENTS Cont’d Light the Menorah and Spin the Dreidel By Debra Friedman, photos by Jeff McCoy Hanukkah is a key holiday the Jewish community in Casta del Sol looks forward to celebrating. For many years this event has been organized by the ARMDI group, headed by Jaye and Boker Yaruss. ARMDI is a group that is open to all who wish to celebrate Jewish holidays and hear presentations or watch films related to Judaism. The organization is officially the Raoul Wallenberg Chapter of American Friends of Magen David Adom (AFMDA). There are about 30 to 50 in this group who get together once a month and the camaraderie continues to grow. The traditional Hanukkah meal includes potato latkes and sufganiot (jelly donuts). Both of these foods have become custom based on the fact that they are fried foods. The holiday of Hanukkah is founded on the story of the Maccabees celebrating a victory over their opponents. In the story, a small jar of oil required to keep an eternal flame lit in the temple, lasted eight days, far longer than expected. Therefore, fried foods commemorate this miracle. Hanukkah officially began at sundown on December 7, while the celebration at Casta del Sol was on the fourth evening. Hanukkah is always on the 25th day of Kislev in the Hebrew calendar, based on both the Sun and the Moon. This calendar is unlike the Gregorian calendar which Americans use for determining most holiday dates. The party started out on a meaningful note with Morley Grossman playing the song Hatikvah on the piano while everyone stood and sang the words. The song is the National Anthem of Israel and is especially somber given recent events. The conclusion of the song that was written in 1886 contains the words: To be a free people in our land, The land of Zion and Jerusalem. The Hanukkah meal, catered by Something Special, included tri-tip, a version of potato kugel, green beans, and salad. In addition to lemon bars for dessert, the jelly donuts were a hit. The Yaruss family adorned the tables with colorful centerpieces and included Hanukkah gelt (chocolate coins) and dreidels (Hanukkah tops) that are two noteworthy symbols of this holiday. The attendees stayed for hours to catch up, play the dreidel game, and admire the Hanukkah table that was created several weeks before.

PEOPLE, PLACES & EVENTS Cont’d Holiday Parties Aplenty By Debra Friedman, photos by Jeff McCoy and Fred Lake The holiday parties at Casta del Sol are eagerly awaited. Residents line up early in the morning as soon as tickets go on sale and shop for new outfits in anticipation. First one out of the gate on December 2 was the Paddle Pickle Party, with a SoCal theme. This combined event of the Paddle Tennis and Pickleball Club was distinguished by humor. Wade and Kimberly Wooldridge entertained with various accents and skits while

awarding door prizes. There was a skit involving the clever song entitled Hanukkah in Santa Monica with three “New York” women poised in their beach chairs. Trish Jacobs wrote a clever paddle sports version of Twelve Days of Christmas with “Five Yellow Balls” in the refrain, that was sung by the entire audience. The contest for best dressed, the raffle prizes, and the door prizes added to the appeal. Continued on next page

The next party, held on December 8, was a collaboration of the Shuffleboard and Bocce Ball Clubs. The noteworthy feature of this party is the engaging entertainment. For more than five years, the animated, amiable, and accomplished Tony Rogers has performed. His versatility is evident in his outstanding voice, dancing style, overall energy and his connection to the audience. He assigns each table one of the characters in the 12 Days of Christmas as well as the 8 Nights of Hanukkah to act out moves with table mates. Other signature audience participation tunes included: My Girl and Hit the Road Jack.

The third holiday party hosted by the Tennis Club on December 10 was open to all residents and guests. Tennis Club parties are renowned for their exceptional music, often employing large bands. The Chris Daniels Project, a country-rock band was the headliner. The delicious dinner catered by Alza Italian featured vegan lasagna, Chicken Piccata, and creamy penne with sausage and assorted greens. A resident musician gave the band a rousing endorsement and a resident Italian food afficionado raved about the food. With all these holiday party options there is something for everyone.

Variety Club Offers Holiday Photos By Debra Friedman, photos by Jeff McCoy

Variety Club Performers

Several years ago, Bear Sanchez and Barb Turino offered pet owners an opportunity to take photos with Santa and Mrs. Claus. It was such a success that the event was repeated and even expanded through the auspices of the Variety Club. This year the photo shoot was stationed inside the Vista Room that was decorated with holiday décor. For those who brought their dogs, a bench outside the gate was decked out with more decorations for a perfect photo op. Donuts,

chocolate, and candy canes sweetened the experience. Also, added into the mix was Richard Scott as Mensch on a Bench, and Larry Kromling as The Grinch. Over 20 residents took advantage of this opportunity bringing in their pets, children, and family in their holiday finery or ugly Christmas sweaters.
