Rancher’s Corner Planning Your Ranch Fencing: Often-Missed, But Important Points Submitted by CentaurFencing.net

Zoning Codes Zoning codes are important to consider because these codes will be able to tell you if you can install the fence where you would like for it to be built on your property. These local codes can also tell you how long a continuous single fence may be. These are determined by the city so it is important to follow these codes as well as keeping the fence on your property and not someone else’s property. If you do not follow these codes then you could be asked to move your fence line and may face a fine from the city ordinance office. If you Google “fence zoning codes” + your city and state you’ll be able to quickly find the zoning codes for the area where you are building your fence.

Locate Utilities, etc. BEFORE Digging You’ll need to locate any possible utility cables or piping before you start digging. The best way to do this is calling 811 which will connect you to a local department able to help you. Check out www.call811.com/ when-to-call/fence.aspx for more details on this.

When planning how you are going to fence in an enclosure, you should consider the entire installation process. In order to make installation easier or at least move along smoother, you should do some research before you begin to install the fencing. There are many often-missed factors that may complicate the installation process so it is important that you know what they are before you begin building and installing the fence.

Volume 59 Farm&Ranch West

Natural Terrain The natural terrain of your property is another factor to consider before you begin building and installing the fence. Terrain issues to look out for is rocky

areas, creeks or streams as some states have ordinances about water access and animals being in the same vicinity, as well as trees and their roots. If your property has any of these terrain factors, it is recommended that you make a sketch or blue print of your property in order to decide how the fence line will circumnavigate these problems in the terrain. Keep in mind that some types of fencing is more suited to rough or varying terrain. For example, wood rail and noclimb fencing can be more difficult to set up evenly across rolling hills, whereas polymer rail (like Centaur Fence’s product) or line fencing will adapt easily. You should avoid rocky areas because it is difficult to secure posts in these areas and it is often dangerous for horses to be around the rocky areas. If your state has an ordinance against animals having

a problem and you may not be able to remove the fence post completely.

Post Distance Depending on the terrain in the enclosed area, the distance between fence posts may vary. Generally, posts are built 8 to 12 feet apart but if the terrain has some of the factors as listed above in the Natural Terrain section, posts may need to be closer together but generally no further than 12 feet apart. This applies to rocky terrain or navigating through trees.

Soil Type One of the most important aspects of building the fence is how secure the posts are in the ground. Different soil types may present challenges when you are trying to install your fence. You may have

Gates It is important to plan out where you are going to place gates so that you can make the most use of your property. Gates should allow enough space for vehicles to pass through the pasture. You should place gates away from corners and preferably in the middle of the fence line as this allows for a stronger fence line. This reduces the risk of horses being caught or trapped in the corner of the fence when the gate is opened to turn other horses out or to bring in horses. This will also help eliminate the risk of you being trapped in a corner as well. access to streams or creeks within their enclosures, you must find a way for the fence to avoid the water access or be able to close off the water access from animal contamination with a separate fence line. Depending on the type of tree, it may be unhealthy for the horse to be given the opportunity to eat the tree bark or to eat the fruit of the tree (i.e. acorns). It is also difficult to secure posts because of tree roots that stretch out underground. Tree roots can also grow around fence posts so if you would need to take down the fence post for any reason, it may cause

areas that present multiple soil types so it is wise to research soil types and have your soil tested for the percentage of clay, limestone, loam, sand, etc. before you begin building your fence. Rocky or clay areas make it difficult to secure posts as well as areas that frequently experience rain. Mud weakens the strength of a post in the ground because the soil beneath the surface is wet. Fencing in these problem areas may require to be set in the ground in concrete to further anchor the fence posts. Here are some great tips on installing posts in rocky soil, and in sandy soil.

Here at Centaurfencing.net we focus on what matters most when it comes to horse fencing: the safety of your horse. In 1980 when Centaur founder Ed Robbins witnessed a tragic horse fencing accident he set out to create a safe horse fence. Now, over thirty years later, the Centaur product is one of the safest products on the market and maintains the high quality workmanship that has made Centaur a household brand in horse fencing.
