The property of the Minnesota State Public School for Dependent and Neglected Children, now known as the West Hills Complex, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a Historic District.

Learn the history of the Minnesota State Public School for Dependent and Neglected Children • Tour Cottage 11, original cottage that housed boys 6-13 (1923-1945) • Cemetery (learn the history of 198 children buried there) • State School Museum (inside City Administration Building) • Call Anne Peterson for group tours of 10 or more (507-774-7369) • Outdoor Audio Tour Stations-seasonal May 1 - November 1 Museum Hours: Monday - Friday: 7:00am-5:00pm (Main Entrance) Saturday & Sunday: 1:00pm-5:00pm (Enter through the Owatonna Arts Center) Cottage 11 Hours: Tuesday – Sunday: 1:00-4:00pm Museum and Cottage 11 are closed major holidays.
Tours: Self-guided tours of the main Museum, Cottage 11 & grounds are free of charge. (Donations are appreciated.) Guided tours, including a presentation and 1930s film footage are available. Please contact the Orphanage Museum for details & reservations.
