Alexander Faribault House (Tours Available)

The Alexander Faribault House, built in 1853, was the first wood-frame house built in Rice County, Minnesota. It was built by fur trader Alexander Faribault in the Greek Revival style. Call the Rice County Historical Society at 507-332-2121 or visit www.rchistory.com for tour information.

Cathedral of Our Merciful Saviour (Tours Available)

The “cathedral idea” was in the air at the time Henry Benjamin Whipple became Minnesota’s first Episcopal Bishop in 1859. According to Whipple, this was the first Episcopal church in the US to be built as a cathedral. Built 1862– 1869, it is the oldest cathedral in Minnesota. The architect was James Renwick, Jr., who also designed St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York and the Smithsonian Institution Building in Washington, D.C.

Caves of Faribault In 1854 a German immigrant named Gottfried Fleckenstein began using the natural sandstone caves along the Straight River for brewing and storing beer. The largest natural cave (still in use today) was enlarged in 1936, then entirely new caves were hand hewn from the sandstone rock beginning in 1938. Faribault: Home of the Tilt-A-Whirl Invented by Herbert Sellner in 1926, the TiltA-Whirl: is one of the best-known flat rides, designed for commercial use at amusement parks, fairs and carnivals, in which it is commonly found. A fully-restored “car” sits downtown for photo-ops and relaxing with a cup of coffee or sandwich.
