CETC Campus is Fareham College’s Civil Engineering Training Centre, which offers industry-focused Apprenticeship programmes and professional training courses to develop the next generation of civil engineers and groundworkers.

Fareham College’s Civil Engineering Training Centre (CETC) was established in 2017 in response to a country-wide skills shortage believed to be hindering civil engineering growth and expansion in the south of England. To tackle the problem head-on, a group of local civil engineering employers set up the Solent Civil Engineering Employer Group

(SCEEG) in conjunction with Fareham College to create a unique Apprenticeship training programme that would address these issues, support the construction industry across the region and create more jobs and opportunities for skilled groundworkers.

The result of this collaboration was the design and development of Fareham College’s CETC campus, a purpose-built two-acre mock construction site close to the College’s existing CEMAST campus on the Daedalus airfield, dedicated to the delivery of specialist Civil Engineering & Groundworks Apprenticeships.

Learners need to show competence in both skills and knowledge, they will need to be working or be on a practical placement in a learning environment (early years setting) during the taught programme of study, and therefore will also require a clear Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.

Initially students learn the core knowledge for the Education and Childcare sector. This includes consideration of the following 12 aspects:

/ Wider context of education and childcare

/ Child development

/ Supporting education

/ Safeguarding

/ Managing behaviour

/ Use of observation and assessment

/ Equality and diversity

/ Special educational needs and disability

/ English as an additional language

/ Working with parents, families and carers

/ Working with others

/ Reflective practice.

The core elements are assessed through an Employer Set Project and an externally marked exam. Combined this will be graded A*-U.

In year two there are specialisms that can be followed. The specialist content ensures students develop the knowledge and skills necessary to achieve competence in this area. Students will be assessed by synoptic assessments and observations carried out while on their work placements. These elements combined will be graded Distinction, Merit, Pass and Ungraded.

There are three main pathways:

Early Years & Childcare Specialism

This includes showing competence of the knowledge and skills of following performance outcomes:

/ Support and promote children’s play, development and early education

/ Develop relationships with children to facilitate their development

/ Plan, provide and review care, play and educational opportunities to enable children to progress

/ Safeguard and promote the health, safety and wellbeing of children

/ Work in partnership with colleagues, parents, carers and other professionals to support children’s development

/ This specialism is full and relevant for childcare ratios.

Assisting Teaching

This includes showing competence of the knowledge and skills of the following performance outcomes:

/ Support the class teacher to enhance children’s education, individually and in groups

/ Plan, provide and review educational opportunities in collaboration with teachers and other adults

/ Safeguard and promote the health, safety and wellbeing of children and young people

/ Recognise, adapt and respond to individual children’s needs, including those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), to support development and access to the curriculum.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How long is the College day?

Typically, we start at 9am and end at 4:30pm. You will have the opportunity for independent study throughout the College day.

What is the College dress code?

Many of our technical and professional courses require a uniform or personal protective equipment (PPE). Your clothing should be appropriate to the working environment with no offensive logos or phrases. You should not wear clothing that restricts the ability of others to identify you while on-site or in examinations, such as hoods, baseball caps or crash helmets.

Can I park at the College?

Parking is available across our three campuses. All students must apply for a free parking permit.

Can I take a holiday during term?

Holidays are not permitted during term time. We take attendance very seriously and expect students to attend all timetabled commitments.

Can I change my subject after I have completed the interview process?

Changing your study programme can be accommodated in the first few weeks of the new academic year, provided there is space on your new study programme. If you have applied for a course and would like to change or discuss your options please get in touch with the Careers Centre, via email at info@fareham.ac.uk

Are there facilities for independent study?

Yes, all students are able to work independently in the LRCs, located at the Bishopsfield Road Campus and CEMAST. Students have access to a wide range of resources and equipment to support their learning.

What is pastoral care like at the College?

All students are able to receive one-to-one pastoral support through their Success Coach and Student Services.

Can I get free meals at College?

Free meals are available to college students from low income families. More information can be obtained by visiting www.cloudforedu.org. uk/ofsm/fe-apply

Can I get help to cover the cost of transport?

Financial support towards travel costs is available for students; for more information, email bursary@fareham.ac.uk

Am I entitled to financial help?

Each year the College receives funds to support students from low income families to meet the costs associated with attending college, such as textbooks, uniforms, and equipment. The Vulnerable Student Bursary is available to looked-after children, care leavers and students claiming Income Support in their own right. For more information, email bursary@fareham.ac.uk

Do I need to pay fees?

There are no tuition fees for most 16-18-yearold students. Some courses require additional equipment or uniform, which you will be asked to purchase.
