Economic pressures are forcing small neighborhood schools to consolidate, often resulting in a sense of lost identity among local residents.

Reclaiming Identity

When multiple communities choose to share a single PK-12 school, we collaborate with stakeholders to identify key elements of local culture and identity. These elements become the cornerstone of a thoughtful design that reflects all perspectives. Our deep expertise includes incorporating historic elements in new spaces, honoring local architectural styles and documenting history through graphic displays. With collaboration and creativity, the building becomes a place that honors the past and shapes a new shared future.

Encourage Growth

The mental, physical and emotional needs of students are vastly different from kindergarten to high school. In PK-12 schools, we give students access to differentiated learning environments for each stage of their educational journey.

Young students use breakout spaces for personalized learning.

In grades PK-6, spaces provide a balance between school and real world experiences. In grades 7-12, students have access to spaces that prepare them for college and careers. We are mindful of shared experiences, including mentoring of younger students by older students. School pride and culture is also a key concern. Our smarter places for learning help students grow individually and as a community.

Inspire Curiosity

Today’s educators are supporting a student-driven learning curriculum. With this in mind, we design the built environment as a powerful tool for student exploration. At the elementary school level, we use lighting and finishes in a variety of shapes, colors and patterns. At the middle and high school grade levels, we include educational opportunities tied to the building systems. This includes dashboards with energy and water usage data, labeling of equipment in mechanical rooms and exposed piping and conduit systems.

Safety First

PK-12 schools offer a different level of complexity when it comes to keeping students safe. The placement and definition of administrative services is a special challenge. Administrators need to be near the students they are responsible for, and they need to control entrance and exit areas, parking areas, bus loops and play areas. Community access to recreational and educational components should be designed to allow easy access without opening up the entire building after hours.

Transparency allows one teacher to visually control multiple spaces within the building.

We design PK-12 schools to appropriately separate younger students from older students, while also maximizing the sense of community that is inherent in a consolidated campus.

Nord Anglia Education wanted to create a breakthrough PK-12 school designed around the varied and personal needs of learners. Fanning Howey and a local Houston architect collaborated with educators to design the British International School of Houston (BISH), a smarter place for learning that has flexibility and choice around every corner.
