With urbanization around the world, the expansion of urban space and industry has provided more employment and development opportunities, but has also brought with it a more difficult commute daily life. According to a report released by the China Urban Construction Design and Research Institute , 40 of China's 42 cities with more than one million people will have an average commute time of more than 60 minutes in 2020, which means that the average Chinese commuter will spend 72 minutes on their way to work in a day.

Beijing, as the capital of China, attracts a large number of stranger for employment due to its many job opportunities and generous salaries, and these people are collectively called "Beijing drifters" who buy houses and settle down near the Beijing area (Tianjin, Hebei, etc.) and commute long distances to work in Beijing every day. I have been one of them for five years since 2017, and the statistic of "average commute time of 72 minutes" is 90-120 minutes for us. Commuting has seriously affected the well-being of city dwellers, and has brought about increasingly serious environmental problems.

This case will explore a transportation mode that balances efficiency and comfort with green and low-carbon, taking the Beijing-centered capital city circle as an example. At the same time, it will propose the construction plan of urban infrastructure to match it. It is hoped that in the future, human beings will be able to use the Internet of Things and artificial intelligence technology to make public transportation services truly meet the travel needs of people living across cities and meet the needs of low-carbon and green environmental protection.

As a designer with ten years of professional experience, I believe that the future mode of transportation will be innovative. The biggest challenge is not the innovation of individual transportation technology, but the huge amount of transportation infrastructure that has been built in cities in China and around the world, and the huge costs and property disputes that will arise if these facilities are demolished and built. Therefore, I wanted this to be an imaginative model of future transportation, yet one that takes into account the current urban situation.

The purpose of the project is to provide an urban renovation idea that can not change the existing transportation facilities pattern, but can also carry the automation of the future new transportation operation. Ultimately, the project will meet the needs of people for public transportation in the era of smart cities.

BACKGROUND What is the cause of the commuting problem?

In 2019, Tsinghua Tongheng Planning and Design Study defined the scope of urban areas in China. The basic thresholds for urban areas are a population of over 5 million and a population density of over 1,500 people per square kilometer within a 1-hour isochronous circle; on the basis of the 2-hour isochronous circle of the central city, cities with a daily average two-way population of more than 1.5% of the total population in the city are selected as peripheral cities in the metropolitan area.

Lifestyles changes brought by urban development

The geographical expansion of cities has led to the gradual extension of multiple neighboring cities. From working and living in a single city (a relatively small geographic area), people are becoming accustomed to a bi-city lifestyle (working in a higher paying city and living in a lower cost of living suburb or neighboring city).

These are fortunate times for people in metropolitan areas, where urban development has provided more options for individuals to work and live. However, the existing transportation services do not fully match the actual needs of these long-distance commuters.

The current transportation system in China is divided into two levels: the intra-city transportation network and the cross-city and cross-province transportation network. The main forms of commuting are self-driving, bus, metro and highspeed rail.

At this stage of long-distance commuting, it is very cumbersome to transfer between different transportation networks and within the same transportation network if you choose public transportation, while if you choose to drive yourself, you will not only face congestion and high gas prices, but also bring energy and environmental problems.

Commuting difficulties have now become a common problem worldwide, with market research firm Dalia interviewing 43,000 people worldwide and compiling statistics on commuting times in major countries. The longest commute is in Israel, with a total time of more than 1.5 hours, while China ranks 11th, with an average time of 57 minutes. The shortest is Japan, with an average of 39 minutes.

In 44 of China's major cities, 76 percent of commuters take 45 minutes; meanwhile, more than 14 million people suffer extreme commutes of 60 minutes or more.

PROBLEM Commuting experience in the capital metropolitan area According to relevant statistics, the total population of Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region is 110 million, and the number of commuters is about 57 million, with 2% of the population commuting across administrative regions, of which 80% of the commuting is related to Beijing, i.e. more than 900,000 people in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei need to commute to or from Beijing every day. This makes Beijing the most difficult city to commute to work in China. The proportion of commuting over 60 minutes in Beijing has reached 30%. In addition, Beijing has the longest commuting distance, with an average commuting distance of 11.3 km and an average commuting time of 48 minutes each way in 2021.

Why is commuting so hard?

The existing commuting modes, whether by public transport or by car, have their own disadvantages and are not satisfactory.

Beijing has always been the most congested city in China, with the city's ring roads and main roads often experiencing severe traffic congestion.

Although there is a high density of highspeed trains between Beijing and the surrounding areas, there is still a shortage of tickets, which usually need to be purchased a week in advance during peak hours.

APPLICATION EXAMPLE Tianjin West Station living circle → Beijing Guomao business circle Tianjin is located 110km south-east of Beijing and currently has 100,000 commuters between Beijing and Tianjin. The Beijing-Tianjin commute can be considered an extreme case of commuting around Beijing, both in terms of distance and time, and this project will use this extreme case as an example of how the C-BOX will operate in the future.

With current urban public transport services, the commute between the two cities takes approximately 170 minutes each way, with 4 transfers, 2 security checks and a walking distance of 2.5km.

The future C-BOX commuter system will reduce the time to 45-90 minutes, with fully automated transfers and a walking distance of 0.1-1km.

The main urban arterial roads and ring roads in Beijing and Tianjin are mostly elevated bridges, and the space under the elevated bridges will be fully utilized in the future to carry light rail running C-BOX cabins. Currently, even in Beijing, which has the highest density of public transportation lines, the total distance people walk during their commute is around 2 km.

In this project, densely populated areas in the city are divided into two categories - industrial traffic circle and life traffic circle. Delimit the area with 2km radius and set up C-BOX station, so that the walking distance between C-BOX station and any office building in the industrial circle should not exceed 400m, and the walking distance between C-BOX station and any residential building in the living circle should not exceed 400m. This dense station layout and fully automatic transfer mode will ensure that workers living in the twin cities will not have to walk more than 1km during their commute.

More digital management service C-BOX Interaction Design Ideas One-click taxi hailing + automatic route design In the future, C- BOX ser vices will be available in cities, where people can find C- BOX hailing devices on roadsides, office buildings, shopping malls, residential areas, parks, and any other public indoor and outdoor space. Cell phones, as the most popular and convenient personal mobile devices, will become the most impor tant C-BOX tool for people to call for a ride.

This section will show how the user interacts with the C-BOX transportation system, using the cell phone ride hailing application as an example.

Once you create your C-BOX account, you simply enter your location, time and mode of travel and the system will automatically match several optimal routes and calculate the cost and time to choose from.

The C-BOX service will offer both efficient and lowcarbon travel modes to suit different travel needs, and will also display the carbon tax rate for different routes to encourage low-carbon green travel. Users can also click to view trip details and modify their routes.

GUIDE RULE 2 - Elevated Track and Station Key Idea： Viaduct transformation, light rail transit, different ways of standing from subway, station public space This guide applies to urban main roads with continuous viaducts, and the existing piers will be used to set up light rail transit system. Although they are both rail transit similar to subway, the construction cost of elevated track will be greatly reduced because the volume of C-BOX cabin is much smaller than that of subway train.

In the future, the C-BOX elevated track will be similar to the subway, which runs underneath the main road, while the C-BOX elevated track will be built on the viaduct of the main road. Since each C-BOX will carry only one passenger, the elevated C-BOX track will be different from the subway, adding feeder tracks to the main track in order to reduce the walking distance between people and their destinations.

GUIDE RULE 3 - High Speed Rail Station and Waterborne Shipping Key Idea：

C-BOX Dedicated high-speed railroad stations, small rooftop airports, inland waterways On August 1, 2008, China's first high-speed railroad, the Beijing-Tianjin Intercity Railway, was officially opened to traffic, bringing Beijing and Tianjin into the high-speed railway era with 30-minute access to each other. Now, 14 years later, China has 27,000 km of high-speed rail in operation, and will reach 37,000 km in the future. It can be said that it is the opening and operation of high-speed railroads that has given birth to the twin-city life model.

However, due to the large area and high cost of high-speed railway stations, the current construction density is not high, for example, there are only 5 high-speed railway stations in the main city of Beijing, which is about 1000 square kilometers. In the future, additional C-BOX stations will be built near existing high-speed railway stations and at important nodes along the railroad line to operate C-BOX high-speed trains, which will also effectively reduce the possibility of detours during interchanges.

GUIDE RULE 4 - CBD Rooftop Apron Key Idea： C-BOX Rooftop Apron, CBD Parking Solution, CBD Shared Recreation Platform These guidelines apply to the CBD and other extremely densely populated and heavily trafficked urban areas. The CBD will have the highest density of C-BOX transit stations in the future, and in principle the walking distance to each office building will be limited to 400m to meet the needs of most commuters. In addition to the general C-BOX stations, C-BOX aprons will be installed on the roofs of CBD buildings to meet the needs of people who require high commuting efficiency.

In addition, the future CBD buildings will be connected by shared platforms in groups to provide more green leisure space for the boring office space, and the structural columns supporting the platforms will become C-BOX cubic parking lots.

GUIDE RULE 6 - Commercial Street Temporary Parking Key Idea： C-BOX on-street parking, existing parking space renovation, parklet This guideline applies to locations with a high concentration of street-level stores and a high demand for on-street parking. The renovation of existing on-street parking spaces for ordinary cars will greatly facilitate people to park and consume in the commercial street section with dense stores and promote the prosperous development of retail business.

The C-BOX takes into account the dimensions of existing urban roads, railways and other transportation carriers in the design phase of a single vehicle, and occupies about 25% of the land area of an average car. C-BOX parking can be achieved by simple conversion of existing parking spaces. Some of the remaining space generated by the conversion will be used as various types of recreational nodes to provide rest, communication and entertainment services for the commercial district.

In May 2021, the results of China's seventh population census were released. The results show that China's population structure has changed signifcantly between 2010 and 2020, with the urbanization rate of the resident population increasing by 14.21% in ten years, the fastest increase since the founding of the country.

The rapid expansion of cities has led to a massive spread of various urban infrastructures, which has fundamentally improved the living environment of Chinese people. However, the rough and tumble development pattern has also brought about many urban problems. On the one hand, the overpopulation of urban centers has brought about tremendous traffic and environmental pressures, and the population needs to be evacuated to the periphery. On the other hand, the peripheral areas of the cities are generally underdeveloped, as they were originally rural areas, and as the cities expand, the farmland is replaced by haphazardly built housing and factories. The peripheral areas have lost their past rural life and are not as convenient as the city center due to incomplete infrastructure development, making them an awkward place between urban and rural areas.

This case is located on the outskirts of Chaozhou City, Guangdong Province, China, and is a real-life case that I traveled in May 2022 during my work at the design institute. This area is part of the future development of the Chaoshan-Jie urban area, and is an important transition zone connecting the three cities, where both the living environment and industrial space needs to be upgraded and modifed.

Due to the constraints imposed on the designer's thinking by the actual project, I did not present the proposal that I provided for the government directly in this portfolio. Instead, from an academic point of view, I will re-examine the problems in the area and consider the solutions, with the hope of proposing a set of regeneration solutions that can be universally applicable to areas that are lagging behind in urban development.

The proposal will provide a regeneration strategy for such areas from three levels: urban spatial planning, architectural and landscape renovation design, and industrial development planning, in order to transform the lagging urban periphery into a more livable low-density community than the city center. At the same time, through the spatial transformation, we will promote the better integration of indigenous people into urban life and attract some residents from the city center to move to this area, so that through the exchange of population and culture, the space between urban and rural areas, and the population between citizens and farmers, will truly evolve into part of the urban culture.

The Shantou-Chao-Jie metropolitan area is one of the five major metropolitan areas in Guangdong Province, China, its administrative area includes the three cities which are Shantou, Chaozhou, and Jieyang in the eastern part of Guangdong.

The southwest area of Chaozhou City, near Jieyang City, is the main direction of Chaozhou's urban expansion, which is characterized by the farmland annexation by low floor area ratio township housing and light industrial factories. There are two reasons : first, the demand for improvement of human living environment, the indigenous people moved away from the old villages to improve their living conditions, and built modern 3-5 story single-family houses on the outskirts of the villages spontaneously, and modern houses gradually replaced the farmland; second, the demand for development of light industry , because of the rapid development of light industry in southern cities, the industrial land gradually replaced the original farmland.

In recent years, the three cities have developed together, and urban spaces have gradually converged on each other, with rural areas on the periphery of the cities gradually being subsumed by the cities.

Sorting out the functional zoning of the whole area and shaping the public service axis

In this project, the existing roads inside and outside the base are sorted out to form a pattern of internal and external traffic access. There are three external roads, the northern road leads to Jieyang, the eastern road leads to Shantou, and the southwest road connects the original disconnected roads to form the outer ring road of Chaozhou.

In this project, we have sorted out the functions of the buildings. All three types of buildings have high density, inadequate acilities and insufficient public green space, and are in need of renovation. In addition, the ancestral hall, as the core cultural facility of the old village, can also be transformed into a public cultural service center for the new farming area.

In addition, by sorting out the existing farmland and green water system, a more open green axis with more green space can be formed along the Seven Fir Pines canal, which runs east-west through the whole site.

Some of the buildings in the green belt that are adjacent to the river and affect the pattern of the green space need to be ecologically altered.

Morever, the project also plans to create a tourism and leisure themed touring belt along the green belt of Qifir Pine, with a total length of about 2.5km, including 9 themes of sports and fitness, local cuisine, folk art, field tourism, ancient villagers' lodging, personal leisure, scientific and technological agriculture, ecological village, and ceramic creativity, which will showcase the local culture in all aspects and realize the culture through tourism, creating opportunities for the third industry development.

China has a tradition of burial for more than 2,000 years. In agrarian societies, Chinese people generally have the belief that the earth is a place of peace, and believe that all life cannot be nurtured and grown without the earth. Old friends who used to live in different places cannot get together because of the epidemic. In addition, in recent years, a large number of Chinese people have moved from self-built houses in the countryside to residential areas in the cities, and neighborhood relations have become indifferent.

Chinese people, who are fond of jollification, yearn for affluent emotional connections between people. But "distant relatives" do not meet often while "close neighbors" are not familiar. How to create an opportunity for strangers to quickly become friends?

This project attempts to break through the boundary between landscape design and industrial product design, and creatively design a wearable landscape device. 2013-2023 Collection of previous years' work projects Frankly, I have graduated for ten years and intend to keep an open professional vision. I once had rich working experience in planning and design companies in Beijing, Tianjin, Shenzhen and other first-tier cities in China. Moreover, my work practice is mainly in public category projects. Below are some of my project examples since I became the project leader in 2015.

In the process of teamwork, I will complete the preliminary research, organize brainstorming and summarize opinions among team members. In addition, as the project leader, I will sort out the space functions and form the floor plan sketches, and guide the subsequent design of the whole set. In the design book preparation stage, I will be the main speaker to report to the government as the previous projects.
