2022 EDITION News and Updates for the Preceptors of FAMU CoPPS, IPH

"EXPERIENTIAL MATTERS"
Thankfully another successful year for experiential learning has come and gone. So, hooray to closing out 2021 2022! Before we say a final goodbye, however, we must offer a heartfelt thank you to each of you who gave your time, talent, and expertise (AND to those who offered to give as well) to help educate our student pharmacists to become adequately prepared pharmacists who are ready join the ranks of this most venerable profession. So, thank you!
Next, here are just a few NOTABLE facts to share with you about 2021 2022:
We had our site visit from the Accreditation Council of Pharmaceutical Education (ACPE).
We remain a fully accredited College of Pharmacy!

We had a virtual preceptor development workshop with Dr. Carol Barthel as our guest speaker Informative and interactive!

Our learners continue to receive top quality experiential opportunities because our preceptor evaluations revealed an average approval score (for our APPE preceptor cohort) of 4.8/5.0 and a 3.8/4.0 for our IPPE preceptor cohort!
So, for the 2nd year in a row, we offer big kudos to our preceptors for receiving such high evaluation scores!
Our 2023 APPE cohort commenced their final year with Block 1 beginning on May 16 They, like their 2022 colleagues, are having a great final year Our 2024 and 2025 IPPE cohorts commenced their IPPEs on May 16 as well Overall, there were great summer experiences for them all!
To close, again, we thank you for who you are and for what you have done to invest in the future of your profession by helping to educate our student pharmacists By sharing your knowledge, time, skills, and expertise with them, you helped them to advance one step further in their career journey! So, here’s to a great 2022 2023 year as well!

EXPERIENTIAL UPDATES:
Our 2023 2024 APPE match results will be released to students on December 12, 2022
Your 2023 2024 APPE student pharmacists’ schedules will be viewable in your CORE account before Christmas.
Summer 2023 IPPE availability requests will be sent via CORE by December 1, 2022
The goal is to have our IPPE student pharmacists’ schedules viewable in your CORE account by March 1, 2023
Preceptors of the Year
The Preceptor of the Year award is presented each year by the directors of each pharmacy practice center These preceptors are recognized because of their commitment and outstanding contribution to the experiential component of our curriculum The recipients are formally recognized during the Annual Awards Banquet
Carol Barthel, PharmD, BCPS

NORTHEAST FLORIDA PHARMACY PRACTICE CENTER
Carol Barthel is the pharmacy clinical coordinator at HCA Florida Memorial Hospital, where she has been employed for 25 years. Prior to this current role, she worked as a clinical pharmacist at both UAB and HCA Florida Memorial hospitals. She received her Doctor of Pharmacy degree in 1996 from Samford University. Dr. Barthel is also a clinical assistant professor at Florida A&M University (FAMU), LECOM, and the University of Florida pharmacy schools She is a former recipient of the FAMU Preceptor Award and holds a board certification in pharmacotherapy Dr Barthel is an avid Scouter with more than 16 years of volunteer experience with Boys Scouts of America and Girl Scouts She is the mother of Eagle Scout Justin and Lauren, soon to be Gold Award recipient Dr Barthel, her husband Johnny, and their children reside in Jacksonville, Florida

Cindy Dent, RPh

OF PHARMACY OPERATIONS AT GUARDIAN PHARMACY OF NWFL CRESTVIEW, FLORIDA
Ms Dent received her Bachelor of Pharmacy degree from Auburn University Her pharmacy career spans more than 40 years, with a number of those years in the community pharmacy arena before she commenced her long term care career track in 2000 She spent several years in Alabama as the director of Pharmacy Operations in a long term care pharmacy facility before moving to Crestview, Florida to join Guardian Pharmacy of NWFL in 2011 where she remains employed to date In 2014, one of her many career accomplishments was the completion of her Green Belt in Six Sigma Ms Dent’s area of expertise is with operations in workflow and process design, analytical analysis and personnel management She has been an IPPE and an APPPE preceptor for the FAMU College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Institute of Public Health’s Durell Peaden Jr Rural Pharmacy Education Campus since 2018
Reginald Wilson, RN, PharmD
TALLAHASSEE MAIN CAMPUS
PHARMACY SERVICES SUPERVISOR AT TALLAHASSEE MEMORIAL HEALTHCARE TALLAHASSEE, FLORIDA
Reginald Wilson, PharmD, CPH, RN, received his bachelor’s degree in nursing and his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Florida A&M University (FAMU) in 2003 and 2012, respectively. While working as a registered nurse in a variety of healthcare settings, including medical trauma, critical care, cardiac/respiratory, and rehabilitation, he chose to pursue a career in pharmacy. Dr. Wilson’s pharmacy practice encompasses inpatient hospital clinical care as well as working as an adjunct professor for the FAMU School of Nursing.
During his decade long career as a clinical pharmacist, Dr. Wilson provided pharmacy care to multiple patients throughout the Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare infrastructure. He was later promoted to pharmacy services supervisor, and his role expanded into a managerial position as well as a host of additional responsibilities, including oversight of several ambulatory clinics and participation in numerous committees and work groups.

Jamekia Grant, PharmD

PHARMACIST AT
Dr Jamekia Grant holds a bachelor's degree in biology from Albany State University in Albany, Georgia, and a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Florida A&M University Her pharmacy background includes community pharmacy and medication therapy management

Currently, she works for Evara Health, serving the underserved members of the community She also works as a medication therapy management pharmacist completing comprehensive medication reviews and targeted medication reviews for various clients in her spare time However, her passion is working in the community, helping to provide medications for patients who cannot afford their prescriptions otherwise Her ultimate goal is to make a difference in her community through education, spread awareness about the importance of adherence, and effectively manage chronic diseases
Carla Hawkins Smith, PharmD, BCPS

Dr Carla Hawkins Smith is a South Florida native who graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Florida A&M University She completed postgraduate pharmacy residency training at the Miami VA and also earned a Teaching Certificate from the University of Connecticut, an Immunization Certificate from Palm Beach Atlantic University, and a Medication Therapy Management Certificate from the American Pharmaceutical Association Dr Smith is a board certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist Dr Smith was recently selected by Legacy magazine as one of South Florida’s “50 Most Powerful Black Leaders in Business and Industry” for 2019!
Currently, the Residency Program Director for multi site nationally accredited pharmacy residency programs for Memorial Regional Hospital, Memorial Regional Hospital South, and Joe DiMaggio Hospital in Hollywood, FL , she manages 14 pharmacy residents and departmental pharmacy education She is also responsible for pharmacy student onboarding and preceptorship with College of Pharmacy affiliations for FAMU, Nova, Larkin, University of Florida, Palm Beach Atlantic, and LECOM She is an editor for the pharmacy newsletter and an active author of pharmacy research

Lori is one of our Student Affairs coordinator experiential staff members. She has been in the College for some 20+ years, so she offers a depth of knowledge in her position Currently, in this role, she monitors ALL of the learners’ requirements in the College Therefore, as the team member performing this critical task, she is very vital to us! Her efforts help to ensure all of our student pharmacists have everything they need when it comes to our team completing onboarding attestations and being in compliance with your site.

She works closely with each student pharmacist, providing the necessary guidance to ensure all tasks are completed within the timeframe. She is caring, compassionate, and considerate (until that deadline passes ��) of our student pharmacists.
An irreplaceable member of our experiential team, we hope you will join us as we send this loud and clear shoutout to her! Thank you, Lori! You are indeed our Rattler RockStar of the DAY!
Formal recognition by the College is done through a certificate to commemorate the achievement. They are also featured in our newsletter. This recognition is based solely on preceptor feedback which is documented in the student pharmacist’s performance evaluation for the IPPE. We appreciate our preceptors who make time in their busy schedules to write such positive, supportive feedback like that, which is included for our featured stars

Retiring from the State of Florida after

41 years
Over the course of her career, Ms. Price worked for the Florida Department of Health, Board of Pharmacy for 25 of the 41 years as a Regulatory Specialist 1.
During this time, she was the ONLY person in the state of Florida to process applications for pharmacy interns. To send a note of congratulations to Ms. Price, please send it to mildred.brickler@famu.edu. It will be forwarded to her.
