Tips for Success in Premedical Studies
The Premedical Program at Florida A&M University in the College of Science and Technology is designed to provide services that will prepare students to be competitive in their admissions application to medical or dental school. Advisement, mentoring, and professional development are some of the resources available to support FAMU students as they navigate through this process. Guidelines and time lines are also provided for students to assist them in successfully completing their prerequisite coursework and other requirements to enter professional schools. The following tips are provided to help understand the services offered by this office and the new academic standards established for successful advancement to medical school. Major: Select a major in which you have a real interest; English, biology, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, physics, and math (college algebra or above), but research the admission requirements for your selected medical school. GPA: Serious premedical students secure a strong GPA of 3.5 or better to be competitive for medical school. Medical School Acceptance: It is very important to develop a strong overall academic record for acceptance into medical school (GPA, MCAT, Faculty Evaluations, Personal Statement, Health Shadowing Experience, & Personal Interview). Seek Help: A smart premedical student knows when to seek help; especially if they are not having the academic success they had in the past. MCAT: The serious contender for medical school will attain an MCAT score of 510 or better. Extracurricular Activities: The serious premedical student has significantly limited extracurricular activities. Find Shadowing Opportunities: The serious premedical student will secure multiple medical shadowing experiences in undergraduate. What to Wear: The serious premedical student is properly dressed for all shadowing and interview experiences.
