FAMILY TRANSITION PLACE

FALL UPDATE PROVIDING SAFETY, SUPPORT AND HOPE FOR OVER 35 YEARS.

WE ARE NOW PET FRIENDLY! Family Transition Place (FTP) has been a safe haven in our community for women and children seeking shelter for over 35 years. We are now proud to welcome family pets, too! Research tells us that when women are fleeing domestic violence, having family pets can deter them from leaving an abusive situation fearing that they can’t bring them with them to safety. At FTP, we have always supported families with pets through this barrier thanks to long-standing partnerships with local veterinary services and foster families through the SafePet Ontario program, administered by the Ontario Veterinary Medical Association. When we recently modified our shelter spaces to ensure personal and private accommodation for families staying with us during the pandemic, this meant that we could also welcome all family pets—furry, feathered, scaly, swimming or otherwise. Our clients love that their pets can join them during their stay, and our staff are also enjoying these new additions.

Dufferin-Caledon Drug Strategy Committee On August 31, in honour of International Overdose Awareness Day, the DufferinCaledon Drug Strategy Committee launched its Anti-Stigma Campaign: People who use drugs are real people. Stop the blame. Stop the shame. Stop the stigma.

Creative adapted from the Stop Overdose BC campaign, launched by the British Columbia Ministry of Mental Health and Addictions in 2018.

The campaign focused on the stigma that individuals who use drugs may experience, with the goal to educate our community on the harmful impacts of stigma, stereotypes and labels.

Comprised of local community partners and agencies, the Dufferin-Caledon Drug Strategy Committee exists to support and coordinate the development and implementation of local, comprehensive, crosssector strategies and resources to reduce the harm related to substance use and/or addictive behaviours. FTP is proud to be a founding member of this committee.

HEIDI’S WALK 2021 Held virtually, the event raised over $12,500 benefitting our programs and services Together, with the support of our incredible sponsors, participants and donors, Heidi’s Walk—held virtually from September 7th–19th— raised over $12,500! This event, formerly named The Ferguson Memorial Walk, began in 2012 to honour the life of Heidi Lee Ferguson (nee Bogner), a brilliant woman in our community who lost her life due to domestic violence. Heidi’s family created this annual fundraising event to raise muchneeded awareness about violence against women, as well as raising funds in support of FTP’s important healthy-relationship education programs. FTP carries on the legacy of this event with the hopes of ending the cycle of violence before it begins. We look forward to a time where we can all be together again—in person—to walk in Heidi’s honour, to continue raising awareness and vital funds, and to bring an end domestic violence in our community.

WHY WE SUPPORT “Helping those who find themselves challenged due to unforeseen circumstances is something dear to our family. With the success of this year’s virtual Heidi’s Walk, it is heartwarming for us to see how many others in our community feel compelled to help as well. Thank you to all who participated and to all the extraordinary volunteers and staff who work tirelessly under difficult circumstances to provide care and hope to our community: we extend to you our most sincere gratitude.” Sarah & Wade Morrell, Heidi’s Walk match donors and forever friends of FTP

THE TIME IS NOW! Event produced in partnership with

2021 HOPE PROJECT: THE TIME IS NOW! Like many local organizations navigating the pandemic, we’ve needed to transform the way we host our fundraising programs and events. Global health crisis aside—our community continues to rely on our programs and services, so our commitment to evolve in response remains unwavering. WE CAN’T DO WHAT WE DO WITHOUT YOU When the world stopped, the need for our services didn’t. Since March of 2020—when the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic was officially declared—and it felt like the world stopped—FTP didn’t. We continued to offer safety, shelter and 24/7 support to families who needed us—at any time. We supported thousands of clients virtually, over the phone and through text and email. We renovated our entire shelter to ensure that families staying with us could safely distance from one another. We transformed our entire Youth Education program from an in-school curriculum to be delivered virtually online. We forged new relationships with local congregate settings, care partners, health units and committees, ensuring our clients and staff continue to stay safe and healthy. We changed the way we hosted events, and continued to raise critical awareness and funds

for our programs and services. We will continue to do whatever it takes to ensure that we are here for anyone that needs us. You can help us respond to these truly historic challenges, and continue to define the way we provide service now, and in the future. We can’t do what we do without you. Please consider making a gift today.

HOLIDAY DONATIONS With the holidays around the corner and our ability to accept donations of physical gifts at our shelter on hold, you can still help. Monetary donations and gift cards will be graciously accepted and used to ensure the holidays are merry and bright for moms and children staying with us. Please deliver any holiday gift cards or donations to us by December 13.
