In Memoriam: Jesse B. “Barry” Grove, III 1942-2019

When Barry’s son, Christian, passed away from liver cancer at the age of 7, Barry was inspired to make a difference and help other families battling pediatric cancer. As an attorney, Barry’s expertise was instrumental in establishing the original Family House on Irving Street, and we remember and honor his contributions toward helping thousands of families each year. Barry is survived by his wife Leanne, and children Barry,Ted,Vanya, and Kate.We are grateful to Barry for his contribution in helping so many families.

Triage Consulting Group hosts Family Dinner

When families come to San Francisco for their child's medical treatment, they are often away from their home and community for extended periods of time, and Family House becomes their support network. More than 5,000 volunteers annually cook meals, bring therapy dogs, play games, do arts and crafts, host parties, and build connections to make families feel supported during the most difficult time of their lives.

Family S tory

The Littlesunday Family In 2013,

just west of the Hopi and Navajo Reservations in Cameron, Arizona, Joy Littlesunday was born with SCID—Severe Combined Immunodeficiency—an autoimmune disease that runs in Native American populations. To save Joy's life, the family was flown to the UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital in San Francisco, more than 800 miles away from home.

At 3 months old, Joy received a bone marrow transplant, which was successful, but followup treatment and monitoring meant that she had to stay close to the hospital. For over a year, Family House enabled Joy and her mother, Tina, to stay close to medical care while living in a supportive, homelike community. Joy's father, Jarvison, and her siblings made the trip up to visit from Arizona as often as possible. During that year, all of Joy's "firsts" were at Family House - first Christmas, first steps, first birthday. Living as a family divided was hard. "Without this place, I don't know what we would be doing," Tina said. "But I miss home, and I miss being a whole family." The other parents and families staying at Family House become a community and family for those who are far from home.

In 2019,

Joy and her family have been back at Family House for weeks at a time for additional medical treatments. The family was here last Christmas, and Joy celebrated her 6th birthday with us this June. One of the sweetest little girls you'll ever meet, Joy loves to sing and dance, and 100% lives up to her name—she is simply a joy to be around. “Family House houses a lot of children with SCID and children with serious illnesses. That's why we feel safe here. Family House is clean, and is a safe place for Joy to get better. We come through the doors, and we feel the love. It feels like home," Jarvison said. "We see Family House in our future for a long time." All of Joy's stays at Family House are 100% cost-free, and will be, for as long as she needs to come to San Francisco for medical treatment. No family ever receives a bill for staying at Family House, thanks to the generosity of donors who make sure that our home away from home is always there for those who need us. Going Above & Beyond We are incredibly grateful to each of the 5,000+ volunteers who, to date, have contributed over15,000 service hours in 2019. Their hard work and love truly makes Family House a home away from home for the families that stay with us, and extends the reach of our on-staff team. The ratio of volunteers to staff is 166:1! We would like to give recognition to a few of the companies who have made a special commitment - giving many hours of time, and contributing in additional, notable ways, as well. In addition to donating Salesforce user licenses, every month, volunteers from Salesforce host the Monthly Birthday Pizza Party: everyone in the house is invited to join for dinner, cupcakes, and merriment, and everyone celebrating a birthday gets a special gift! Groups volunteer at Family House for team-building projects, and their New Hires program encourages employees to spend part of their orientation week volunteering. Over 1,000 Salesforce employees have contributed their time this year! And they were a Platinum Sponsor of the 2019 Ohana Gala!

Thank you to These Recurring Corporate Volunteer Groups 400 corporate volunteer groups donated their time in 2019 to provide vital support for Family House families. These companies return again and again to Family House and consistently show how much they care:
