Tips for keeping safe around water this summer by Puddle Ducks The summer holidays are almost upon us…yippee!

At Puddle Ducks, we often get asked about how to safely enjoy swimming away from our classes – especially when on holiday.

Well, you won’t be surprised to hear that it isn’t rocket science! Deep down, we bet you all know the answers but we’ll share our thoughts anyway.

First and most importantly – stay safe!

When researching your holiday or day trip (or arriving at the destination if you haven’t yet done so) check the safety arrangements of any water-based activities and see if there is lifeguard cover.

Children will gravitate towards water – teach them to never enter the water without your supervision.

Take time to check the depth, water flow and layout of pools.

Follow the pool rules.

Check bathing sites for hazards, check the safest places to swim and always read the signs – find out what local warning signs and flags mean.

Swim with any children in your care – it’s more fun and you can keep them close and safe.

Understand your swimming environment – especially how the depth changes.

On beaches stay in a safe depth. Check when the tide will be high and low and make sure that you won’t be cut off from the beach exit by the rising tide. Also, be aware of dangerous ripcurrents – if caught in one, swim parallel to the shore.

Inflatable dinghies and lilos are a well-known hazard and can easily be blown out to sea - don’t use them in open water.

Children’s vulnerability changes with age but those under 12 months are relatively immobile and entirely dependent on caregivers. They can drown very quickly and in very little water, and in containers that may not be perceived as risks (for example, in a bucket or a toilet). Children who are mobile but too young to recognise danger or to get out of water are also at risk, especially in the absence of barriers and capable supervision.

It’s important to stay safe at home too so always supervise bath time (never leave children unattended) and empty the bath as soon as possible after use.

If, by chance, we have some hot days here in the UK(!), remember to empty paddling pools and buckets as soon as they have been used and always turn paddling pools upside down once empty.

JC Clarke - Author of Spellboda Jo was born in Hollingbourne, and grew up riding her bike and sledging over the Downs. Jo’s love of wildlife began by wandering the fields and meadows around the village, watching the seasons change and affect the countryside - and its inhabitants - around her. Target Shooting School Target Shooting School’s core values are Trust, Responsibility, Attention, Collaboration, Openness and Mindfulness. In our after-school classes our students from 8 to 18 years are introduced to target shooting as a hobby and shown a pathway towards excellence, should they choose it. This August we are offering a series of workshops across Kent where children can escape the holiday boredom, learn something completely different and parents can have a well-deserved break!

We fulfil any child’s curiosity surrounding our sport and dispel all misconceptions fostered by computer games.

We are a fantastic antidote to too much screen time! Target Shooting is also a superb alternative to main stream sports. It maintains a high level of competition but does not rely on team interaction or physical prowess for success to be achieved. In fact, it draws on different skills that are equally important for our lives in an environment that is much less overwhelming than a games field. Our classes provide animated social interaction, communication and teamwork are essential parts in integrating students. Each class is a group that works together, not just as individuals. We encourage students to become more autonomous, allowing them to work and play with increasing independence.

Target Shooting School started in Kent 4 years ago with the intent of bringing shooting to a grassroots audience. Shooting used to be a widespread, community sport and we want to make it accessible again. We bridge the gap between a hobby and a committed sporting approach. Mal West, Principal of all Kent Schools, is a County Level coach with over 20 years’ experience coaching juniors. Target Shooting School employs experienced, qualified and DBS checked staff from a range of shooting and teaching backgrounds. Following a structured and progressive syllabus we have taught all kinds of children in a safe, controlled environment. From instilling safety rules, to the breadth and depth of marksmanship principles, termly progression opens a pathway to county and regional competition. Classes take place in multiple venues across Kent, made possible by our bespoke, portable 10 metre range and students use quality air rifles fit for competition.

Target Shooting School provides a new and unique way to explore a niche sport. We have made an inclusive sport accessible, we are spreading the word and bringing it to you. Our students find themselves in a social group of like-minded people working within a disciplined activity where attention and responsibility forms trust. Sporting benefits include increased body and self-awareness in terms of biomechanics and coordination. There are mental benefits too, process discipline, concentration, calming, patience, perseverance and resilience. Mindfulness is a process that encourages all of these benefits and many students grow in confidence having experienced our teaching.

We want to reach as many people as possible to give them the opportunity to try something new. We want to de-mystify the sport and educate, allowing people to get the most out of it. We consider ourselves ambassadors of shooting and we are passionate about the benefits it offers and the fun to be had along the journey. Come along and join us!

Godstone Farm - Summer Holiday Survival Guide NICOLA’S TOP TIPS FOR THE SUMMER HOLIDAYS: Make a day of it: think about planning a few days out which offer a range of activities and work for various ages and interests, to create a full day of fun. This not only saves on multiple travel and entry costs to different places, but it also means that those quieter days at home feel like well-earned respite for all involved!

Get lots and lots of fresh air: yes, even if it’s raining, getting out in the fresh air is a ‘must’ each day to refresh little lungs, and replenish vitamin D, helping to regulate our body clocks and happiness hormones.

Provide opportunities to get up-close with wildlife: it’s a well-known fact that giving children a chance to spend time with animals builds confidence and empathy. Learning that our furry friends need lots of love, care and attention is great way to build those all-importance social and emotional skills.

Get physical: climbing, jumping, sliding, crawling…at almost any age, soft play can be great way to shake off any pent-up energy in those arms and legs (and offers parents the chance to grab a warm cuppa), or an adventure playground offering zip wires, and climbing walls will get those fast-twitch muscles exercised!

The countdown has begun for many parents, as the summer holidays loom. This can mean weeks of planning, entertaining and coordinating to make extra special memories for our little ones, but it can also be a stressful time for parents, juggling annual leave with tightening purse strings. As a result, Godstone Farm has created not only a hefty programme of events this summer, but also a number of top tips for parents (and kids), to help us all, not just survive the summer holidays, but to thrive!

Godstone Farm has forty years of experience planning exciting summer holiday events, but this year, CEO, Nicola Henderson says that they have been working extra hard to ensure it is fun, and a good value destination for families wanting to embrace a day out in the Surrey Hills. Nicola comments: “Over the past two years families have had to contend with lots of cancelled plans and now a real squeeze on household budgets, so we want to make this a summer to remember at Godstone Farm. We have launched a Summer Sizzler pass to offer extra value and we will have a daily, programme of activities as part of our Storybook Summer event, and we’ve brought back our hugely popular Big Farm Sleepover experience, where families can literally pitch-up and stay as our guests at the farm!”

A healthy balance of treats and fresh food: if you’re eating out for the day, this can be a chance to talk to children about where our food comes from. “Was it produced locally, how did it grow, who grew it, how long did it take to get your table?”These are wonderful conversation starters which touch on a range of subjects to get brains whirring. Or perhaps it’s a day to pack a picnic? Get little ones thinking about their choice of food and give them the responsibility to make some mealtime choices.

Try something completely new: summer holidays are a fantastic way to break away from the routine or to even step out of the comfort zone, allowing children to experience “measured risks”. This could mean visiting our reptile enclosure, or maybe even camping under the stars – these experiences give children a chance to face a fear and come out of it beaming with pride from their new-found accomplishments!

Perhaps it’s time to dress-up, and let your children pretend to be their favourite storybook character…just see where the next adventure takes them!

And when we say awful, we mean awful. Aunt Alberta and her best friend Wagner, a vicious Bavarian owl, tried everything they could to torment Stella into signing over the deed to Saxby Hall. But Stella, with the help of her friend Soot (the ghost of a chimney sweep, but friends come in all shapes and sizes, don’t they?) fought off Aunt Alberta, saved Saxby Hall, and gifted the beautiful Saxby Hall to be used as an orphanage.

The Crow House

Wed 17th August at 2.30pm A derelict house appears in the middle of the street. The windows are shattered and a keep out sign bars the front door. A furious bird has taken up residency in the chimney and squawks territorially when anyone comes near the house.

Awful Auntie by David Walliams, adapted for the outdoor stage by Heartbreak Productions, is a truly thrilling tale. Owls, ghosts, chases, escapes, motorcycle rides, and tiddlywinks all fill Stella’s days as she evades her menacing Aunt and saves the family home. So, please join us at the dedication of the new playground at Saxby Hall and hear how it all came about. Make sure you bring a blanket or chair to sit on, weather-appropriate gear, and a picnic, as the tale could take some time to tell, and storytelling can be hungry work!

One by one three very different characters arrive through the audience and try to take over the house. A battle of wills and skills ensues with ducking and diving, wheeling and dealing and ingenious plans evolving as each person tries to gain a room inside. Little by little in a choreographed frenzy of acrobatics, silks trapeze, hat juggling and slap stick they begin to accept each other and work to create a home, together, within the battered house. The only remaining problem … the furious bird in the chimney.

Castlemas lands at Tonbridge Castle between 8th 20th December, to help spread that Christmas magic!

The Igloo Theatre is the beating heart to Castlemas and a must-see for all the family. The Igloo has exclusive access for ticket holders only, so be sure to make it inside this incredible Tardis! There are over 50 shows throughout the 13 day period that are on offer to you. One of which is “The Greatest Snowman”, our Castlemas family show that has been specifically created for the Igloo Theatre. Port Lympne & Howletts Places to Visit - Port Lympne & Howletts For a captivating day out for the family, why not take a walk on the wild side with a visit to Port Lympne Hotel & Reserve or Howletts Wild Animal Park. Both offer the chance to explore acres of stunning parkland, home to many rare and endangered animals.

Visitors to Howletts, near Canterbury, can see the largest herd of African elephants in the UK, Kent’s only giant anteaters and more gorillas, leopards and monkeys than any zoo in the county.

Port Lympne, near Hythe, offers the UK’s most authentic safari experience, journeying by truck through the park’s vast 100-acre Kentish savannah, seeing such iconic animals as giraffe, black rhino, wildebeest and zebra.

Visitors can treat themselves to an indulgent classic afternoon tea on the sunlit mansion terrace at the heart of the reserve, amidst 14 acres of tranquil landscaped Italian-style gardens. With tea served on traditional tiers, layered with a selection of sandwiches, savoury bites and delicious twists on English dessert classics, it’s the perfect way to end a day of exploring the 600-acre Reserve.
