Omaha Family Fun Guide - Winter 2025-2026

Winter, for the past few years, seems mostly frigid with not as much snow. Snow, at least for our family, helps to make the cold days more fun. From building snow forts for snowball fights to sledding, snow skiing, or simply catching delicate snowflakes on the tongue, snow certainly makes venturing into the bitterly cold outdoors more eventful. Whether our metro receives a lot of snow to play in or we have a cold dry Winter, there are still an abundance of activities throughout the area to fully enjoy.

A few of our favorite activities are exploring downtown where the playgrounds at Gene Leahy Mall at The River Front are connected by a lighted walkway leading down to the Skate Ribbon. There is always a multitude of holiday plays and performances to enjoy. We look forward to seeing the poinsettias and trains at Lauritzen Gardens, group caroling along the boardwalks at Fontenelle Forest, and seeing the Zoolightful displays at the Omaha Zoo.

For family-alone-time we enjoy our bundled up hikes, cozy game nights, and our tradition of sipping on hot chocolate while driving around

7 Quick Steps to Prepare Your Home for Winter

Source: eLivingtoday.com

(Family Features)

As days grow shorter and temperatures begin to dip, it’s the perfect reminder to begin preparing your home for winter. A little effort to winterize now can prevent costly repairs, improve energy efficiency and keep your family warm and comfortable even after the first snowflakes fall.

Don’t wait until the first snow to prepare. Visit eLivingtoday.com for more tips to keep your home cozy all winter long.

1. Service the HVAC System

Before you need to rely on your furnace or heat pump, schedule a professional inspection. A tune-up can extend your system’s life and lower energy bills. Also remember to replace filters and clean vents to ensure your system is running more efficiently.

2. Seal Doors and Windows

Drafty windows and doors are some of the most common culprits of heat

loss. Check for gaps, cracks or worn weatherstripping and seal them with caulk or foam, if necessary. Adding thermal curtains or door sweeps can also help block cold air and keep your home warm inside.

3. Clear Gutters and Downspouts

Clogged gutters can lead to ice dams, roof leaks and water damage. Clear leaves and debris, and ensure downspouts direct water away from your foundation, which can help prevent additional problems when snow melts and refreezes.

4. Protect Pipes

Frozen pipes can burst and cause major damage. In basements, attics and crawl spaces, insulate any exposed pipes, and consider letting faucets drip slightly to keep water moving on especially chilly nights.

5. Reverse Ceiling Fans

During the winter months, ensure your ceiling fans are spinning clockwise, which helps push warm air down, improving heat circulation and

comfort in your living spaces. Don’t forget to flip them back to counterclockwise in the spring to move hot air upwards to keep your home comfortable.

6. Test All Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarms

Heating systems, fireplaces and space heaters, which are more often in use during the winter months, can increase fire and carbon monoxide risks. Test your detectors, replacing batteries if necessary, and ensure you have a carbon monoxide detector on each level of your home and a smoke alarm outside each sleeping area.

7. Winterize Outdoor Faucets and Hoses

To prevent freezing, shut off outdoor water valves and disconnect garden hoses. For extra protection, consider installing insulated faucet covers.

FAMILY FUN

3D Cookies Craft That Wow

Create cookie sculptures you get to enjoy with your eyes and mouth!

There’s something magical about a holiday tradition that brings people together—glittering lights, cozy evenings at home, and sweet treats made with love. But if you’re looking to add a little extra “wow” to your baking this year, 3D sugar cookies might just become your family’s new favorite holiday tradition.

What Are 3D Sugar Cookies?

3D sugar cookies are playful, stand-up designs crafted by baking multiple cookie pieces that fit together to become tiny edible sculptures. These aren’t stuck together with icing as one would use in order to create a gingerbread house, but instead the pieces fit into each other like a puzzle. They can be whimsical, fun to create, and are very simple for kids. It’s similar to crafting with clay!

Spark creativity.

Of course decorating any cookie is loads of fun—but building something with those cookies adds a whole new level of excitement. Kids can assemble their own creations, adults can experiment with intricate details, and everyone gets to admire (and eat!) the final masterpiece.

They become a centerpiece.

Whether displayed on a holiday dessert table or given as gifts, 3D cookies make people stop and converse.

They’re easy to personalize. From snowflakes to reindeer to mini Christmas villages, you can tailor your cookie designs to your family’s holiday style or theme. Each person can decorate based on their own personal style.

FAMILY FUN CRAFT

How to Get Started

Choose the right dough:

A classic sugar cookie recipe like this one on All Recipes works great, or pick your family favorite.

Use templates or cutters:

Many 3D cookie cutters come as sets, but you can also create your own templates or shapes. Just cut two identical shapes and add “slits” so the pieces slide together. We really love this set from Chicago Metalic and this Star set for making a stacked Christmas Tree.

Baking and Decorating Tips:

For the best results, roll your dough to a consistent thickness and keep a close eye on bake time. You want the cookies firm enough to stand on their own once cooled. If the cookies are close to the same thickness as possible they will fit together better. We found that we still needed to lightly “sand” away a few areas for a perfect fit.

Decorating before assembly can make the process easier. Add royal icing, sprinkles, edible glitter, or food-grade paint while the pieces are flat, then gently fit them together for the final 3D effect.

An optional idea for the trees is to separate out some dough and mix in some green food coloring before cutting and baking the trees.

Make it something special!

Turn your 3D cookie baking into a family event. Play festive music, sip on hot cocoa, and let every person assemble their own edible masterpiece. Take photos, swap designs, and maybe even create a little “cookie village” on the dining table. Before long, you’ll find yourself looking forward to this cozy, creative baking day each year.

Pumpkin Pie

RECIPE IDEAS

Roll out dough to 2 inches larger than pie dish. Gently press dough into dish until it lines bottom and sides. Trim dough to within 1/2 inch of dish edge. Fold edges underneath themselves, creating thick 1/4-inch border. Crimp edges with fingers. Refrigerate. Preheat oven to 375 F. In large bowl, whisk eggs and sugars until smooth. Add pumpkin, cream, vanilla, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg and salt. Stir until well blended.

Slowly pour filling into pie shell. Cover edges with thin strips of aluminum foil. Bake 25 minutes. Remove foil. Bake 25-30 minutes, or until toothpick inserted near center comes out clean. Cool on wire rack.

Prep time: 30 minutes

Cook time: 70 minutes

Yield: 48-50 cookies

1 cup unsalted butter

5 cups all-purpose flour

2 teaspoons baking soda

1 teaspoon salt

1 tablespoon pumpkin pie spice

2 cups brown sugar

1 can (15 ounces) Green Giant 100%

Pure Pumpkin

1 tablespoon vanilla extract

2 large eggs

2 egg yolks

For Rolling:

2 tablespoons cane sugar

1 tablespoon brown sugar

1 teaspoon cinnamon

In small saute pan over medium heat, melt butter. Stir regularly until butter turns deep golden brown, 8-10 minutes. Pour browned butter into heat-safe bowl or measuring cup and refrigerate until cooled, but not solid, about 15 minutes.

In large mixing bowl, whisk flour, baking soda, salt and pumpkin pie spice. Set aside.

In separate medium mixing bowl, stir browned butter and brown sugar. Whisk in pumpkin and vanilla extract followed by eggs and egg yolks.

Gradually mix wet ingredients into dry until evenly mixed. Refrigerate dough 30 minutes.

Form dough into four separate logs 2-3 inches in diameter and about 7 inches long. Wrap each cookie dough log with plastic wrap. Freeze dough 30 minutes, or until ready to bake.

For rolling: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and line large baking sheet with parchment paper. Stir sugars and cinnamon on large plate. Unwrap the desired amount of dough (thawed slightly at room temperature if the dough is completely frozen) and roll each log in sugar mixture.

Slice dough into 1/2-inch slices. Place on baking sheet 3 inches apart.

Bake for 14-15 minutes. Repeat with remaining cookie dough.

Cool cookies at room temperature on baking sheet 10 minutes before transferring to a cooling rack and cooling 10 minutes.
