Chef David Wiesner grew up watching his mom cook for the family. He grew to appreciate the effort and love she put into each meal. As he grew older he realized that sitting down for family meals brought them closer together. David wanted to become a chef so he could be a part of bringing family and friends together for a great dining experience. David started his professional cooking career in 2006 after graduating from Western Culinary Institute. His first job was to work under Richard Dingle of Sunriver Resort. Richard taught him how to properly run a kitchen and to take his education in French Cuisine and apply it in modern cooking. An opportunity arose to return to his hometown of Silverton to work under Jeff Nizlek of the Silver Grille, a master of Northwest Cuisine. He learned about sourcing ingredients directly from growers and utilizing every part of the animal to create fantastic dishes. Jeff taught him how to improve upon classical techniques. Chef David has a true love for the Northwest and it shows in his cuisine. He loves incorporating local products in his dishes and letting the quality of the ingredients speak for themselves. Chef David is a master of sauces and infusing new spices into traditional cooking. Chef David is committed to the Roth’s brand promise of providing the highest quality products and excellent service. The customer experience is most important.

Alexana Estate Vineyards and Winery was born of a chance meeting between veteran Oregon winemaker Lynn Penner-Ash and Dr. Madaiah Revana, owner of Revana Family Vineyard in California’s Napa Valley. With the help of Penner-Ash, Dr. Revana acquired the uniquely situated 80-acre estate located on the Northwestern edge of the Dundee Hills AVA in the spring of 2005. This property’s unique composition of 18 various marine sedimentary and volcanic soil types make it the perfect place for Alexana to continue Revana’s commitment to producing exceptional estate grown wines. Each vineyard block of Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Riesling and Chardonnay is individually cultivated in a celebration of the property’s diverse soils, clonal selections and microclimates using LIVE certified sustainable farming practices. In the cellar, Winemaker Bryan Weil carries out Penner-Ash’s minimalist approach to winemaking by focusing on small lot fermentations in our recently completed 3-story gravity flow winery. A Gold LEED-Certified tasting room is now open to the public daily and private tours are available by appointment.

Argyle Winery’s history began when Brian Croser and Rollin Soles staked a claim in Oregon’s Willamette Valley – an ideal place for late season ripened Pinot Noir and Chardonnay fruit. Since 1987, Argyle Winery has produced world-class methode champenoise Sparkling wine, barrel fermented Chardonnay and silky textured Pinot Noir. Argyle farms three vineyards: Knudsen Vineyard, Lone Star Vineyard and Spirit Hill Vineyard. The 120 acre Knudsen Vineyard was first planted between 1972 and 1974. The high elevation blocks of this landmark Dundee Hills site are key components in Argyle’s Sparkling wines. Knudsen provides Argyle with a mix of old vine blocks and new high density blocks planted with “Old World” Dijon clones. In 1996 Argyle purchased a spectacular 160 acre vineyard site in the east slopes of Eola Hills, known as Lone Star Vineyard. This warm site vineyard is planted primarily to Dijon clones of Pinot Noir and has the potential to be one of Oregon’s best Pinot Noir vineyards. Spirit Hill was purchased in 2008. This Eola-Amity Hills 180 acre site was planted to 30 acres in the first year and now has 100 acres planted. Located south and up slope from Lone Star Vineyard, a great future of distinctive wines awaits Argyle from this impressive site. A pioneer cemetery came with the purchase, adding to its potential other world quality!

Tasting Notes

2011 Argyle Winery Vintage Brut Argyle Brut is always vintage-dated to capture what sparkles each year in the cool climate of Oregon’s Willamette Valley. Argyle Vintage Brut is bottle-fermented, aged on-the-yeast and ‘disgorged on demand’ in small batches to preserve vibrancy and freshness. The delicate bouquet is filled with red berry spice, lemon blossom, and toasted brioche. The palate begins with generous plum and gingernut biscuit, yet leads into edgy minerality and briney undertones. 2012 Argyle Winery Reserve Pinot Noir Exacting in its fruit selection from the Willamette Valley’s most luxurious vineyard sites, Argyle Reserve Pinot Noir has classic ‘silky textures’ born of peak season ripeness, small batch handling and gentle aging in French oak for 16 months. The fruit profile rides the line of red and dark fruit. Black cherry and Howes cranberry embraced by subtle, toasted hazelnuts, and vanillin. 2012 Argyle Winery Lone Star Vineyard Nuthouse Pinot Noir Nuthouse Pinot Noir comes from the low-elevation, warm, southeastern slope of the Lone Star Vineyard in the Eola-Amity Hills AVA. Brilliantly garnet in color, the aromas are initially delicate and ethereal, hinting at fresh rose petal and red earth. As it opens up, more complex aromas emerge of dark chocolate, anise, and wild cherries. The mid-palate is deep and creamy, poised against firm tannins and long, savory acid.

Bethel Heights Vineyard was established in 1977 in the Eola-Amity Hills by twin brothers Ted and Terry Casteel and their partners Pat Dudley and Marilyn Webb. They produced their first estate wines in 1984. Since 1977 they have expanded the estate vineyards from the original 50 to over 100 acres, including the adjacent 25-acre Justice Vineyard established in 1999, and the nearby 28-acre Ingram Lane Vineyard planted in 2008. After thirty-seven years, the original 50 acres of own-rooted Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vines continue to provide the backbone of Bethel Heights estate grown wines. Gnarly old vines, geologically complex hillside soils, and direct impact from Æolian winds — all conspire to create highly energized wines with firm backbones, depth of character, and distinctive personalities. Nine different bottlings of estate grown Pinot Noir and Chardonnay each year barely begin to tell the tale. In 2006, cousins Ben Casteel (son of Terry and Marilyn) and Mimi Casteel (daughter of Ted and Pat) took the helm as winegrowers at Bethel Heights, maintaining the family commitment to building sustainability and stewardship of the land into all aspects of growing grapes and making wine, while constantly challenging the status quo and raising the bar. Tradition spiced with revolution is proving to be a recipe for evermore interesting wines.

Tasting Notes

2011 Bethel Heights Vineyard Southeast Block Pinot Noir The Southeast Block is a six-acre section of the Bethel Heights estate vineyard that consistently gives wines of distinctive character. The wine opens with fascinating aromas of green olives, forest floor, and anise; then black cherries play the dominant note. Good concentration, density and weight on the palate, with dominant flavors of boysenberry and blackberry. 2011 Bethel Heights Vineyard Estate Pinot Noir This wine is a blend of fruit from all the different sections of Bethel Heights’ 70-acre estate vineyard and has aromas of raspberries and black currant, with subtle hints of rhubarb, sandalwood, clove and black pepper. The wine finishes with bright acidity and fine-grain tannins. 2012 Bethel Heights Vineyard Æolian Pinot Noir This is the epitome of their new generation Pinot Noir: powerful, youthful, focused, and energetic. A dense core of nervy acidity and fine-grained tannins give this wine both tension and vivacity. This wine has the concentration to age gracefully over the next ten years. 2012 Bethel Heights Vineyard Estate Chardonnay Aromas of this wine include honeydew melon, white peach, and lemon verbena with hints of star anise, nutmeg, and white pepper. The palate features flavors of banana and lemon zest with a hint of mid-palate salinity, and bright acidity that carries the wine to a long, graceful finish.

Paul and Eileen Gerrie established Cristom Vineyards in 1992. They had been attending the International Pinot Noir Celebration (IPNC) for years, and there developed a passion for Pinot Noir. Present from the beginning were winemaker Steve Doerner and vineyard manager Mark Feltz, both arriving with prior knowledge of Pinot Noir. The estate has 60 acres in vine, which are planted primarily to four distinct Pinot Noir vineyards named for Gerrie family matriarchs. Hallmarks of Cristom’s winemaking are a large percentage of whole clusters, native yeast fermentation, and minimal handling throughout the winemaking process. Estate Pinot Gris, Estate Viognier and Estate Syrah make up the balance of our 13,000 case production.

Tasting Notes

2009 Cristom Vineyards Sommers Reserve Pinot Noir Sommers Reserve is comprised of grapes from four estate vineyards, along with some traded or purchased fruit. This wine’s aroma notes cocoa powder, orange-pekoe tea leaf and cola berry. The taste impression is creamy, spicy, persistent and ripe. 2012 Cristom Vineyards Louise Vineyard Pinot Noir This 9.5 acre site is the oldest of the estate vineyards, which began planting in 1993. The aroma has a mix of pomegranate, red and black fruits, and is rich and complex, intriguing and youthful. The taste impression is mid-weight on the palate, with a luscious and velvety texture that is spicy and promising. 2013 Cristom Vineyards Estate Viognier Cristom planted 1 ¼ acres of Viognier in 1993. There is very little Viognier planted in the Willamette Valley and Cristom’s now 20 year old vines may be the oldest. The subtle aromas include wet stone, center of the earth mineral notes and higher-tone white flower. The taste impression is dry, bright and clean with good weight on the palate.

Tasting Notes

2011 Dobbes Family Estate Griffin’s Cuvée Pinot Noir This wine is deep garnet with a diverse bouquet opening with cherry and strawberry jam accented by tobacco, wet leaves, cocoa powder and dried herbs. It is blended to be age worthy with assertive tannins leading the palate and lengthening the finish while flavors of red currant, dried cranberry and sage await integration. 2011 Dobbes Family Estate Quailhurst Vineyard Pinot Noir The palate opens to juicy, ripe cherries and medium body balanced by tart rhubarb and moderate tannins which carry into the long acid driven finish. Quailhurst wine is driven by bright red fruits in the aroma and on the palate; 48% new oak adds complexity and typical of the 2011 vintage, acid and tannins carry a long finish. 2012 Dobbes Family Estate Patricia’s Cuvée Pinot Noir This wine has luscious, red fruit aromas redolent of cherry and strawberry with toasted oak characters of cedar, vanilla and tobacco and an underlying wet soil complexity. The palate opens to full body, fine grained tannins and ends with a long balanced finish. Opulent flavors of ripe strawberry, Bing cherry and black currant wrap around complex oak characters of cocoa and vanilla. 2013 Dobbes Family Estate Crater View Vineyard Grenache Blanc This wine has aromas of citrus fruits, white peach and apricot with earthy bread yeast accents and white flowers. The mouthfeel is creamy with a tart counterpoint of granny smith apple that carries the long finish. Since the beginning, Evening Land Vineyards has produced Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Gamay Noir from three distinct wine-growing regions: the Sonoma Coast in California, the Eola-Amity Hills in Oregon, and the Cote D’Or in Burgundy. The talented winemaking team is led by both Rajat Parr and Sashi Moorman. Their intention is to produce terroir-driven wines with energy, elegance, nuance and transparency; reflective of the time and place in which they were grown. Looking forward, they plan to narrow their focus specifically on Seven Springs Vineyard in the beautiful Eola-Amity Hills, first planted in 1983. Evening Land’s Seven Springs Vineyard is dry-farmed using biodynamic practices. The Pacific Ocean breeze, volcanic and marine sedimentary soil, eastern exposure, and high elevation contribute to the natural preservation of the grapes’ acidity and enrich the wines with elegant flavors and minerality.

Tasting Notes

2011 Evening Land Vineyards Pinot Noir Blueberry and huckleberry inform an ingratiatingly polished palate, the tart edges and berry seed crunchiness is vintage-typical, but the overall impression is unusually soft and sweetly ripe for a 2011. A savory undertone of meat stock serves for saliva inducement in a lingering finish. This bottling saw only second-year and older barrels. It will serve admirably through at least 2017. 2011 Evening Land Vineyards Seven Springs Vineyard Pinot Noir This wine is a deep, brilliant garnet in color. The nose is voluptuous and broad showing red and black fruit at first and then opening into floral notes of rose and lavender with hints of cardamon and dried boletus. The palate is seamless with deep fruit flavors of blueberry, sour cherry cobbler and hints of rosemary with a very fine texture throughout. The finish is precise and direct, sustained by mineral notes and lingering fruit flavors, in the classic Seven Springs Vineyard style. 2013 Evening Land Vineyards Seven Springs Vineyard “Celebration Gamay Noir This wine is beautiful, brilliant and intense purple in color with a violet edge. The nose has typical red fruit Gamay character of strawberry and cherry with a hint of fresh cracked pepper. It opens up to darker tones of elderberry and gooseberry. Established by Jerry and Elaine Owen, Lady Hill Winery honors the legacy of the land and the radical spirit of the people of the Northwest with their True Northwest wines. Lady Hill wines are crafted by individuals, not manufactured by processes. Lady Hill’s pledge is to deliver delicious wines that are unique Northwest expressions of classic European varieties and blends, and which reflect the individual qualities of each of Northwest vineyard source. To fulfill this promise, Jerry (cofounder of Owen Roe Winery) and consulting winemaker Erik Brasher carefully select heritage vineyard sources and personally work with growers to make the best viticultural decisions for each vintage’s conditions. At harvest, grapes are carefully transported to the custom-built Lady Hill Winery in the heart of Oregon’s Willamette Valley. Attentive winemaking ensures that every lot of hand-harvested grapes is individually vinified in slow, cool, smallbatch fermentations and then matched to the best barrel type for its character. Rigorous tasting trials result in final wines that are richly aromatic, texturally elegant, and which are true to their varietal character, blending style, and Northwest roots. Carefully and honestly fashioned with a love for the region, respect for the heritage of the land, and a commitment to preserve it for future generations, Lady Hill wines express the authentic spirit of the True Northwest.

Mahonia Vineyard is a sustainably farmed, family-owned vineyard located in the Willamette Valley foothills south of Salem, Oregon. For over 25 years, they have specialized in producing high quality Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay wine grapes which are sold to some of the most celebrated winemakers in the Willamette Valley. Each year, they hold back a few tons of their best fruit and work with local winemaker Chris Berg (Roots Wine & Vineyard) in order to create limited bottlings of ‘honest wine’— wine that represents the unique habitat of their vineyard site; their values; and their commitment to producing high quality wines at affordable prices. They generate solar power, use locally produced biodiesel, are Salmon Safe and LIVE Certified, and were one of the first vineyards in Oregon to become Carbon Neutral. Their definition of profit includes giving back to Oregon communities, especially through programs benefitting children such as Family Building Blocks, and those benefitting the environment such as SOLV.

Sineann, with owner and winemaker Peter Rosback, is a small producer of highly intense wine in Yamhill County, Oregon. Sineann sources fruit from some of the best vineyards in the region; Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris from the Willamette Valley and the Hood River Valley, Cabernet, Merlot and Zinfandel from the Columbia Valley, Gewurztraminer from the Willamette Valley and the Columbia Gorge. Sineann has even started making wine from the Napa Valley. Since 2007, Peter Rosback has been making wine in New Zealand. He is fascinated by Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, and works tirelessly to improve the wines. When he first arrived in Marlborough to make wine, he found that the grapes were machine picked, and set seeking out pickers as a priority. The quality level is marked, and evident. Their growers have great pride in the grapes they provide. Almost all the wines are vineyard designated. No expense is spared in the pursuit of great wine. Crop levels are kept very low, one to three tons per acre. Winemaking is meticulous. All fruit is hand-sorted, delicately de-stemmed, punched down by hand, gently pressed and gravity-racked. The wines are aged in new and one-year old French oak. The bottom line is, Sineann strives to make great wine. It’s the only kind of wine that makes it onto their dinner table. It’s exciting to make and gratifying to share. They believe that food and drink, lovingly prepared, make for happier and healthier people.

Tasting Notes

2012 Sineann Winery Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon This wine has is a dark, rich, Cabernet, very silky and smooth on the palate, without a heavy astringency in the finish. The wine has dark fruits and cassis at its core, but the long finish means it is a perfect accompaniment for steaks, and heartier fare. 2013 Sineann Winery New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc The nose is serrano or jalapeùo pepper, with highlights of grapefruit and passion fruit. The palate is full, and balanced with a racy acidity that is a perfect accompaniment to various foods, including fish, fowl, oysters, and vegetarian food. 2013 Sineann Winery Pisa Terrace Pinot Noir The 2013 Pisa Terrace Pinot Noir is another of Sineann’s New Zealand projects. The wine is dense with dark fruit highlights, yet remains supple on the palate. It is a perfect food match for lamb, duck, prime rib, and more.

Winery

St. Innocent was founded in 1988 by its winemaker and president Mark Vlossak. They produce small lots of handmade, vineyard-designated wine from some of the best sites in the Willamette Valley. Since their founding, they have grown from 600 cases that first year to a current production of 8 –10,000 cases, yet each wine is still handcrafted in the very same manner. Year after year, St. Innocent has received recognition from throughout the country and around the world for its outstanding Pinot Noir, beautifully-crafted white wines, and fair pricing. Mark’s raison d’etre is to produce wines that reflect their terroir, the specific qualities of the vintage, and his vision of wine’s place in life: to complement and extend the pleasure of food. To accomplish his goal, he picks fully ripe fruit at the point of maximum complexity and ferments the fruit to extract the exact balance of flavor and tannins desired. This produces wines that display their unique fruit character as well as secondary flavors specific to the terroir of the site: spice, pepper, mushroom, earth, etc. The result is wines with higher acid levels and diverse yet harmonizing flavors.

Tasting Notes

2013 St. Innocent Winery Villages Cuvée Pinot Noir The Villages Cuvée is produced from Pinot Noir grapes grown in Oregon’s northern Willamette Valley. Fruit from our estate vineyard, Zenith, and five other sites are blended to create a Pinot Noir that complements rich white meat and fish dishes. To enhance this match, we blend to maximize both the spectrum of flavors and length on the palate while minimizing the use of new oak. 2013 St. Innocent Winery Freedom Hill Vineyard Pinot Noir Freedom Hill produces Pinot Noirs with lovely structure. Its abundant nose has a rich density of dark fruits, roasted sweet spices, dried citrus notes and wild flowers. This is a wine for richly flavored foods with complex, roasted flavors such as ratatouille, lasagna, and its signature dish, Porterhouse steak with fried potatoes. It can be enjoyed after decanting 2-3 hours and aged for 12 years. 2014 St. Innocent Winery Zenith Vineyard Oeil de Perdrix The “Eye of the Partridge” white Pinot Noir is an off-dry, crisp, low-alcohol wine perfect for summertime picnics. In many ways, it is more similar to German Riesling than Pinot Noir except for its plum scents. It is excellent with veggies, grilled fish, pork tenderloin, cold meats, and picnic foods including potato salad, cold chicken, and burgers.

Winery

Willamette Valley Vineyards has been producing high quality, sustainably grown Pinot Noir and other cool-climate varieties since 1983 — earning the distinction as “One of America’s Great Pinot Noir Producers” by Wine Enthusiast Magazine and “2011 Winery of the Year” from Wine & Spirits Magazine. The mission is to create elegant, classic Oregon wines from the Willamette Valley Appellation while serving as stewards of the land. Founder Jim Bernau believes we are rewarded with wines that taste better when made from naturally grown wine grapes. Tending the vines by hand and using minimalist winemaking techniques in small-batch fermentations, they strive to capture the unique sense of place that comes from the soils. They were the first to use natural cork in their bottles certified by the Rainforest Alliance to Forest Stewardship Council standards and offer 10 cents for any wine bottle returned to the tasting room for recycling. To reduce their carbon footprint, all company tractors and delivery vehicles run on biofuel — and they offer up to 50 gallons a month free to employees for commuting to work. Willamette Valley Vineyards invites you to their new Estate Tasting Room and Barrel Cellar to enjoy wine tasting, food pairing and sweeping views of the valley. Open daily 11am – 6pm.

Tasting Notes

2012 Willamette Valley Vineyards Estate Pinot Noir This wine is a blend of three vineyards — Estate Vineyard, Tualatin Estate, and Elton Vineyard. On the palate, the wine is generous and full-bodied with flavors of boysenberries, chocolate, leather and coffee accented by an integrated oak profile. Silky tannins and bright acidity provide an excellent dimension to the ample fruit. This wine is both elegant and intense, exemplifying the bolder side of the “Oregon style.” 2012 Willamette Valley Vineyards Bernau Block Pinot Noir The remarkable growing season of 2012 resulted in perfectly ripe fruit with intense colors and concentrated flavors. A deep, inky shade of purple in the glass, the wine opens with a complex nose featuring plum, blackberry, smoke, freshly overturned clay and game. Flavors mirror aromas on the opulent palate and layer in cedar, tobacco and minerality. Velvet and full-bodied in texture, the focal point of the wine is the well-structured, persistent and polished tannins that are further highlighted by the lift of bright acidity. 2014 Willamette Valley Vineyards Rosé of Pinot Noir This wine is vibrant pink in color with aromas of juicy strawberry, nectarine and honeysuckle accented by a touch of creamy vanilla. Dry with a medium-bodied, it has a round mouthfeel and expressive palate of watermelon, raspberry, tangerine and minerality notes. The refreshing acidity creates a lively and clean finish.

Brewery

Gilgamesh Brewing is a family owned and operated brewery located in Salem, Oregon. Founders Mike, Nick, Matt and Lee Radtke started their brewery in an out building on small acreage in the foothills south of Salem in 2009. The family brewers developed their unique brews, frequently using non-traditional ingredients, on repurposed dairy equipment. Their beers quickly became popular with the local community, and outlying areas. Gilgamesh had outgrown their facility by 2011, and began looking for a new location. They refurbished their new facility in late 2012 on an amazing 3 acre lot and dubbed it “The Campus.” A large family restaurant and pub with a fantastic outdoor patio sits adjacent to the rehabilitated Pringle Creek. The property also has a large outdoor event area which works great for large parties, reunions and occasional weddings. The large manufacturing building houses their new state of the art brewing facility. Their high efficiency brew house reduces energy, water, raw ingredients and labor to provide a more sustainable product. The brewhouse also gives them the freedom to create new and unique beers to keep their customers on their toes. A lot of Gilgamesh Brewing’s success can be attributed to their award-winning and unique brew Mamba; brewed with black tea and tangerine peel with only a smattering of hops. A light flavored and smooth bodied brew has a taste that can only speak for itself. Other flagship beers such as Oedipus IPA, HopScotch strong ale and Vader CDA can be found on draft, in 22 oz bottles and in 12oz 6 pack cans all over Oregon, Washington and as far west as Japan. Gilgamesh provides a plethora of different beers; simply put, “A Beer for Everyone!”

A Letter from Our Venue Sponsor

Welcome to Zenith Vineyard! Who would have believed eight years ago that the Uncorked Wine Auction at Zenith Vineyard would have developed into Salem’s premier gala event? Who would have believed that Salem would step up so generously and embrace the mission of Family Building Blocks? You believed, and you did it. We can all be so proud of what we’ve created together in support of our community and families in our neighborhoods and beyond. Zenith Vineyard is all about sustainability. Our vineyard is certified by LIVE as sustainable. Set in human terms, sustainability perhaps starts and ends with family. We see Family Building Blocks’ work as vital to sustaining our neighborhoods, our schools, and the fabric of the community. Just as we lovingly tend the vineyard, hoping for a blessed harvest, you all are the vinedressers of our community – making an investment now, applying support when needed most. The payoff will be in the strength of the families we support now, continuing ten and twenty years hence. The fruit of that investment will surely be sweet. Join us in celebrating tonight! Let us together build a successful legacy in support of Family Building Blocks and our community. And we will enjoy some amazing wine and food as well!

6 Commemorative Painting by Darcie Leighty

“It is this ‘emotional remembrance’ of bold colors and expressive line encapsulated within a familiar image, that I am compelled to share.” — Darcie Leighty

That statement by contemporary artist Darcie Leighty truly captures the spirit of our 2015 commemorative painting. Titled Chic Dee II, this framed acrylic piece measures at 24” by 24” pre-framed. Darcie received her formal art education from Rhode Island School of Design and later graduated from Portland State University. In the past, she has enjoyed working as both freelance illustrator and art teacher but found that nothing can replace the personal reflective experience of being a studio artist.

Uncorked’s 2010 commemorative artist, John Van Dreal, has generously bestowed to us the beautiful still life painting titled “Glass and Grapes #2.” In describing his work, John Van Dreal has said, “Although I often focus on light and form as content, my intrigue with symbolism and iconography tends to find dominance in many of my pieces. By combining symbol and form with established aesthetic principles and time-proven techniques I hope to create evocative, contemporary images that find expression on aesthetic, intellectual and spiritual levels.” “Glass and Grapes #2” is 20” x 24” painted with oil on linen.
