Purple Up Day is Thursday, 29 October 2020 in observance of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Wear something purple on this day and receive a discount of 10% off at the One Stop Shop, one day only.
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month The Army’s message for 2020 Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) is preventing domestic abuse is a shared community responsibility, and one that starts with a message of support for victims. At times, it can be difficult getting help in an abusive relationship, especially now, when we are faced with the COVID-19 pandemic. Many victims of domestic abuse find themselves at home due to being quarantined or by observing local government stay-at-home orders, which increase the risk of being abused by their abusers. Victims may be cut off from families, friends and safe havens they usually communicated with and relied on to reduce their risk to violence. This year’s DVAM message focuses on families and friends of victims of domestic violence and ways they can help in lowering the risk of domestic violence abuse. Here are few simple things you can do: Stay connected by reaching out: The person who is abused may feel scared and alone. Just saying “I am thinking about you and will be there for you when you need my help” can help them to feel that there is hope and someone cares. Listen: It is very important for a person being abused to tell their story. They just want to know that they are being heard and you believe them. If you listen intensely you will hear when the time is right to give advice.
Don’t judge or blame the person who is being abused: Intimate partner violence is about power and control and it is not the victim’s fault. We may find ourselves thinking “why don’t he or she just leaves.” There are many reasons the victims stay in abusive situations. It could be financial, children, threats and even to leave their pets. Just be supportive, the person who is being abused need to make his or her own choice of when to leave, which will enable them to retake a sense of power and control in their lives. Encourage the person being abused to have a safety plan, which is a step-by-step plan to keep the victim and their love ones safe. Safety plan should include, plans to leave the house safely, where to go and what to bring. A safety plan should also include emergency numbers such as, police, domestic violence hotline, and individuals who are concerned about the victim’s safety. Safety plans should also include copies of important papers, extra clothes and medications. For more information, please contact the Tobyhanna Army Depot Family Advocacy Program at (570)-615-7509 or contact the Domestic Violence Hotline at 1800-799-7233.
