Twas
the month of December, the land blanketed in snow The children were at home, with nowhere to go
They had finished their games, they had even gone out They had tried counting floor tiles, but always lost count “There’s nothing to do,” they would cry and complain “It’s the Holiday season, but nothing’s to gain” Their mother could see they were stuck in a rut She wanted to do something for them, but what? She considered her options, she wrote them all down And at the very end, she said with a frown, “We’re new to the country, with no family or friends, And counting down days ‘til our tour over here ends, If only I could somehow bring back their Holiday spirit, But how could I possibly, when their hearts are not in it?” Her heart grew heavy as she realized the truth There was nothing she could give her bored, home-sick youth But out of the corner of her sharp, watchful eyes She saw a small book, and she let out a cry “Of course, it’s so clear!” she exclaimed in delight “The answer to our problem lays in plain sight!” She picked up the book, which read “In the Zone” And called to the children in a sing-songish tone, “Children, come here! I have some great news There are so many programs from which we can choose After I’m finished reading out loud, I promise you this: you both will be wowed. For the month of December, the clubs have in store All the Holiday food that you want and much more There’s spicy chicken pizza available all day Sounds quite delicious, let’s head to the Gateway There are buffets flowing with meats, sweets and veggies So let’s visit the Iron Triangle, Mitchell’s, Warrior’s and Reggie’s As you can see, the clubs have it all down But wait ‘til you hear what else is coming to town Santa is scheduled to come visit this place He’s coming with gifts to our very own base And not only him, but some cheerleaders too They’ll wow and they’ll awe with the stunts that they do For your father who golfs, get him nice golf apparel Pro Shops offers great stuff, so it’s sure to bedazzle We can even take lessons from a certified pro So to the Area I Golf Courses, we’ll be sure to go And we all love to bowl, so let’s blow off some steam As we all enjoy Area I bowling as one big family team 18

And help Santa save Christmas at Casey’s Bowling Center By battling the Grinch, and saving Christmas from disaster And because you’re so crafty, and can use such a break The Arts & Crafts Center offers many make-and-takes From ceramics to paper, from models to beads This creative center offers all that you need If you’d like to meet up with your buddies, your good friends On these cold, snowy days that never seem to end Then the CACs are the place for you to behold As you take part in games, for the young and the old The tours that they offer, the places you’ll see Amazing locations both local and overseas And don’t forget tournaments they have every week Video games, table top and the unique Want to make sure you don’t lose your sports skills? Then check out the gyms to hone them at will Football to Basketball, Baseball to Racquetball These Area I Gyms definitely offer it all And for Families in Korea, if they need a guide Can use the great services that ACS provides They’re known to help Families, through thick and through thin And into their office, they’ll welcome you in But most kids your age, know all about The School Age Centers located throughout The Area I community, give it a try They have all the right stuff to keep you occupied They have field trips and puzzles, activities too And new friends to greet, so meet others like you!” The children sat staring, they could not believe That all of this time they had been so naïve With cheers of pure joy, the children began to shout “Oh please, Mother, please, take us all out! With the Clubs, Sports and Shows! With the Golf and the CAC With Bowling! ACS! And CYSS’s own SAC!” So they threw on their jackets, and put on their hats And called their dear Father to meet at the CAC As the Holidays passed, their Family didn’t bore Thanks to all that FMWR had for them in store And though you’re away from your home very far

Camp Casey Bowling presents...
The Great Reindeer Round Up and 12 Days of Christmas Strike-Off Competitions
$2.50
per game
The Grinch is at it again. His heart is at least one size too small and he has given in to his temptation to steal Christmas one last time. This time, he’s hatched a very detailed and evil plan not only to steal Christmas, but to also snatch all twelve days of Christmas! Imagine no drummers drumming, no pipers piping, no golden rings, no milk maids milking. Imagine no Christmas at all! Casey Bowling Center needs your help! The Casey Bowling Center has looked around but has been unable to locate any of the missing Christmas ingredients needed to put Christmas back on track. Do not panic-there’s some hope yet. After the Grinch hid everything he stole, he was in such a hurry to get out of town that he didn’t notice that his detailed master plan scribbled on scrap paper had slipped out of his pocket and onto the floor. It was later discovered by none other than the Christmas Scarecrow himself. Thinking it was very important, he alerted everyone that came through Casey Lanes to the Grinch’s plot. This important clue is the key to recovering all of the missing days of Christmas. Only you and your parents can make a difference in this race against time by unlocking the magic seals that hide the twelve days of Christmas.

Army Family Team Building According to a letter from the Secretary and Chief of Staff of the Army dated March 2, 2011, “Our nation has been at war for almost a decade, the longest period of continuous combat ever for our all volunteer force. During that time our Army – Active, National Guard, Reserve and civilians – has met every challenge. We have successfully ended combat operations in Iraq, while simultaneously conducting one of the largest retrogrades in our Nation’s history. We have surged Soldiers into Afghanistan to support a strategy to address an adaptive enemy. We have also nearly completed the transformation of our operational force and are now addressing the Army’s generating force. Additionally, the Army has provided lifesaving humanitarian assistance to those affected by natural disaster in Pakistan and Haiti and supported homeland defense and civil authorities in border screening and the Gulf of Mexico oil clean up. In almost a decade of sustained combat, more than 1.1 million Soldiers have deployed to combat, impacting not only the Soldiers but their Families as well”. Families are still an important priority to the Army and Soldiers and a vital factor in the overall readiness of Soldiers. A prepared Family is better able to manage deployments, long-term separations and Army life in general, allowing the Soldier to stay focused on the mission. Army Family Team Building empowers individuals, maximizing their personal growth and professional development through specialized training, which transforms our community into a resilient and strong foundation meeting today’s military mission. It provides the Army Family with skills and tools to successfully maneuver through the Army system and access the many resources and 58

What is Army Family Team Building (AFTB)? 11 Ways to Save on Heating Costs by David Uffington
Here are a few ideas to help you save money during the coldest months of the year. 1. If you haven’t had your furnace inspected this year, it’s not too late to do so. Consider buying one of the service plans. If your furnace quits in the middle of a cold night, you not only want to know who’s going to come fix it, you want to know that some or all of the repair costs are covered. 2. Be sure you’re not blocking any air vents with furniture. 3. If you never got around to caulking your windows and are feeling drafts when the wind blows, head to the hardware store and look for Frost King plastic window sheeting. This clear plastic (three large sheets to the box) goes on the inside of windows with the adhesive tape that’s supplied. Shrink the plastic tight with a hair dryer and trim off the extra. The trick is to get a few inches of dead air space between the window glass and the plastic. The wider that area, the better the insulation factor. 4. While you’re at the hardware store, pick up two or three furnace filters. Plan to change them on the first of every month during the winter, when the furnace is running frequently.
5. If you have ceiling fans, run them in reverse to move the warm ceiling air down into the main part of the rooms. 6. Consider turning down the temperature on your water heater. Generally they’re set at 140 degrees F. You can still get a hot shower, and it will save 3 percent to 5 percent of your energy bill with the temperature set at 120 F. 7. If you’re home during the day, open the drapes on the sunny side of the house, and close them when the sun moves to the other side. 8. Turn down the temperature on your thermostat 1 degree. In a few days, turn it down another degree. You likely won’t feel the difference in temperature, but you’ll save between 2 percent and 5 percent on your heating costs. If you can, invest in a programmable thermostat set to lower the temperature when no one is home. 9. Insulate your attic access door, if you have one. 10. Add a warm-air humidifier: Moist air feels warmer. 11. If you’re in the market for a new furnace, water heater, doors and windows or attic insulation, remember to check www.energysavers. gov for rebates before you buy.

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern
Reviewed by Ealish Waddell Still just children, Celia Bowen and Marco Alisdair are plucked separately from ordinary lives and bound into a supernatural feud that they barely understand. It is to be a test of their skills in magic, and they are to create the battlefield from scratch an elaborate traveling circus, open only from dusk till dawn, a breathtakingly beautiful chessboard in black and white where their moves can be traded in ever-increasing displays of imagination and grandeur. Of course, it is inevitable that Celia and Marco fall in love. But how can they ever have a future together, when the game decrees that one of them must win and one of them must die? Interwoven with this intriguing main tale are a variety of sketches fleshing out the odd folk who call this precarious place home. Chief among them are the psychically gifted Murray twins, born on the night the circus opened and mysteriously linked with its health and fate. Their lives intersect that of dreamy Bailey, a regular kid who longs for a life beyond the farm, and whose destiny may prove vital to the circus’s continued existence. The circus itself is a masterpiece. Tents contain not only acrobats and animal tamers, but also a garden made completely of ice, a labyrinth among the clouds, a tree covered in wishes and a room full of bottled scents that evoke a lifetime of memories. The novel’s greatest strength is its atmosphere, which manages to pull off the tricky feat of feeling delicate and magical without succumbing to either twee or cloying in one direction or oppressively macabre in the other. A substantial air of the sinister gives heft to the circus’s whimsy, but it is still a place more of joy than of darkness. “The Night Circus” is a confection of a book, a virtual feast for the senses. When you’re done, you’ll want to don a crimson scarf and run off to join the circus, too.
