In This Issue..

Happy New Year... Welcome to the first issue of 2018. We hope you had a lovely Christmas and enjoyed some quality time with your family.

The main theme for this issue is ‘Family Health and Well-being’, and my own family’s New Year’s resolution is to be more active.

It was actually during a family walk that I captured a picture of my son Thomas taking some winter photo’s (inspired by the Suffolk Fab40 Winter Adventures on p4) that has been used for our cover for this issue.

In this issue we have some helpful advice for managing the dreaded winter ailments, and a really interesting article on mindfulness on p13, which considers how anxious parents could be affecting their children.

We have also introduced a new ‘Suffolk Museums’ page for 2018, that will look at the work that goes on behind the scenes at the fantastic museums in the county. We hope you enjoy.

You can break the ice on a puddle; hunt for treasure on the beach; take an exciting walk in the dark; find the biggest tree in the park or wood; be the first footsteps in the snow (fingers crossed we get some more); photograph a frosty morning to share with the world (will grandad’s camera take a better picture than your phone?); do some basic woodwork and build a nest box to put up in the garden; wander the woods and find a carpet of snow drops; watch a robin in your garden and dig him up some dinner and / or you can stay indoors and take part in the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch 27 - 29 January 2018.

Lowestoft Rising with Museums

Lowestoft Rising with Museums, an Arts Council funded volunteer recruitment project, has been working with three museums in Lowestoft – Lowestoft Museum, Lowestoft Maritime Museum and East Anglia Transport Museum – to work with local schools, colleges and community groups to develop mutually beneficial volunteering opportunities.

Working with existing volunteers, and welcoming seventeen new volunteers across the three sites, the project has shown that whatever the reason for volunteering, and however long the experience, museum volunteering promotes positive wellbeing. It provides the opportunity to improve skills, experience and confidence whilst encouraging community pride through a sense of shared heritage. And, its fun! From handling ancient objects to telling fantastic stories museum volunteers inspire, learn and contribute with every visit.

Rodney Duerden, a dedicated volunteer at Lowestoft Museum, said, “Old and new volunteers are working successfully together on a number of ideas to enhance the museum, especially for younger visitors. There is a positive and cheerful atmosphere here in which all are able to make a contribution”.

What they are probably less familiar with, however, is what advice to give their children about talking to strangers online, especially when ‘strangers’ are actually on their children’s online friends list.

Parenting children who are growing up in a rapidly changing digital world can be challenging and it is hard for parents to keep up to date with what children are doing online and the risks they may face.

Understanding the online risks Thanks to a growing body of research we have a much better understanding of the dangers and risks that children face online and what can be done to help keep them safe.

According to latest research commissioned by Internet Matters, the average child has 100 followers on social media and less than half of them are real friends. We know that some of the risks children face online can have very profound consequences.

Educating children on how to stay safe Many parents assume that it is the responsibility of schools to educate children about using the internet and how to keep themselves safe online. However, whilst schools do indeed have an important role to play in raising children’s awareness of internet related risks, most of the time that children are online is at home especially in their bedroom.

Children are far more likely to see something that frightens them, post a sexualised message, receive a message that upsets them or bully another child outside of the school environment.

It’s, therefore, vitally important that parents talk to their children about the internet, social media and mobile technologies.

Open, honest e-safety conversations Talking to children about their behaviour online is an essential part of contemporary parenting. Just as parents teach children how to cross a road safety, they should be teaching their children how to safely navigate the internet. Much of what parents can do is straightforward yet can be very helpful.

Getting a mortgage

when you are self employed As if there isn’t enough stress in being self employed, freelance or a contractor, persuading a mortgage provider to lend to you is an additional concern of many people who have chosen this career path.

2 in 5 of those who have (or intend to have) a mortgage in the future are worried they might have difficulty arranging finance because of their working status* This is an after effect of 2014’s Mortgage Market Review, which introduced affordability assessments to prevent excessive borrowing.

This made it pretty tough for anyone with “non-standard” earnings, including older borrowers and the self employed, to get a home loan.

Over three quarters (77%) of self employed people said they were concerned about not being able to shop around to arrange a mortgage as there are only a handful of companies likely to lend to them*

Our top 5 tips for self-employed mortgage applicants: • Have accounts signed off by a suitably qualified accountant and obtain a certificate.

• Obtain SA302s (HMRC receipt confirming earnings) or electronic equivalents.

• Have credible earnings/business forecasts in place, and if approaching a year end have predictions of year end position.

• Provide evidence of previous contracts, time remaining on current contracts and, if applicable, work history in the same field prior to becoming self employed, freelance or a contractor.

• Prepare documentation required by mortgage providers such as bank statements, evidence of child tax credits, balances of other outstanding loans, credit cards etc.

When two parents end their relationship, it can be an unsettling time for any children in the family. Each parent will have their own ideas about what lies in the children’s best interests and what the arrangements for contact should be.

Winter Health Woes

During wintertime some health problems like colds, flu and sore throats are triggered or worsened by cold weather. Here’s how to cope with winter illnesses.

Colds It may sound simple but you can prevent colds by washing your hands regularly. This destroys the bugs you have picked up from touching objects and surfaces used by other people. Also remember to make sure household items like cups, glasses and towels are clean, especially if someone in your family has a cold.

Use disposable tissues instead of handkerchiefs and make sure you cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze. Make sure you dispose of the tissue as soon

as possible, don’t leave it hanging around in a pocket or up a sleeve. You can also provide your child with antibacterial hand gel, which they can have in their pencil case or school bag, so they can keep their hands clean during lesson times.

Flu Flu can kill vulnerable people.

The over-65s, pregnant women and people with long-term health conditions are the most vulnerable.

The best way to avoid flu is to have the flu jab or flu nasal

spray, which is for children aged 2 to 17. The vaccine gives good protection against flu and lasts one year. If you are in a high-risk group make sure you visit your GP.

Sore Throats Sore throats are more common in the winter months, usually because of a viral infection.

A traditional remedy that can relieve the symptoms of a sore throat is gargling warm, salty water. Dissolve a teaspoon of salt in part-cooled boiled water and then gargle.

Asthma Cold air often triggers asthmatic symptoms, like wheezing and shortness of breath. Asthmatics should be

Norovirus The Norovirus also known as the ‘winter vomiting bug’ is a very infectious stomach bug.

It can occur all year round but is common in schools, hospitals and care homes during the winter. It isn’t pleasant but is usually over in a few days. When people are ill with vomiting and diarrhoea it’s important to drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration. Young children and the elderly are particularly at risk. Drinking oral rehydration fluids (available at pharmacies) also helps reduce the risk of dehydration.

Anxious kids or anxious parents?

Are you an anxious parent, and could this be affecting your children?

There are many strengths that being anxious can possess, such as sensitivity, having a good imagination and planning abilities. All of which can be used to help manage worries and overcome problems.

However, there is a very high likelihood that anxious adults will pass their anxious chemistry to their children. So for parents to model facing fears and not letting anxiety boss them around, they may need to work on some coping techniques themselves.

There is no reason for your children to suffer the same way you have. The earlier a child learns the tools to handle lifes challenges the less long term distress they will experience.

“Children of parents with anxiety disorder are 6 to 7 times more likely to have anxiety disorder than a control group”. (Manassis 1995)

How can mindfulness help?

Lets start with what is Mindfulness. It is being aware of your present moment (thoughts, feelings, physical sensations) without judgement and without trying to change it.

In practice, mindfulness means staying focussed on one thing at a time. Training our minds to focus on one thing takes practice - mindfulness is a skill to be learnt.

Mindfulness offers numerous benefits for parents and their children. Research shows that it decreases stress, reduces anxiety and depression, and helps people feel calmer and more relaxed. It can also help increase compassion for self and others and improve general well-being. Parents who practice mindfulness often feel more in control of their choices and behaviour.

Children of anxious parents are more likely to...

• Perceive ambiguous situations as more threatening.

• Have lower estimates of their competency to cope with such situations.

• Engage in all or nothing thiking (perectionists).

• Become masters of negative expectancy.

• Have sleep problems.

• Be fearful of physical symptoms.

• Have higher levels of anxiety.

(Bogels & Zigterman 2000; Weems 2001).

They act less impulsively resulting in better outcomes for everyone. Children of parents who practice mindfulness also tend to have better social interactions with family and peers and fewer behavioural problems.

So lets say you are juggling a busy family life with looming work deadlines. Your child comes home from schools and straight away starts complaining that they don’t have the right shoes for football practice.

You may react by yelling, using harsh words or shutting down.

This reaction may exacerbate an already challenging situation, and could result in conflict and negative emotions

between you and your child.

With mindfulness you hit the “pause” button which allows you to respond rather than react, it decreases the intensity of you and your child’s response thus improving the overall situation and de escalating the intensity of the situation.

Recent studies have shown that parents who reported more mindful parenting engage in more positive and less negative parenting behaviour, which was then linked to more positive behaviour in their kids- meaning less anxiety, depression and acting out.

Asthma It affects around 1 in 11 children in the UK but not all asthma in children is well managed.

Asthma is very common but it’s important to take it seriously?

There’s no cure for asthma but with the right treatment it can usually be controlled easily. When the airways of an asthma sufferer become irritated the muscles around the airways tighten, the lining of the airway becomes inflamed and swollen and more mucus is produced. All of this makes it harder for air to get into the lungs resulting in coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath and chest tightness. These symptoms are often known as an asthma attack.

If your child has asthma, it’s important to see your practice nurse to get an asthma action plan for them. This plan should be reviewed regularly which includes their medications, at least once every 6 months. This is crucial, so you can ensure your child is getting the best treatment, tailored specifically to them.

If at any time you think your child’s plan isn’t right- make an appointment to review it.

Managing your child’s asthma is a whole family affair, make sure everyone takes it seriously and knows what symptoms to look out for and what they should do when attack happens. If your child is old enough, you can teach them to recognise their own symptoms too.

ASTHMA CAN KILL TAKE IT SERIOUSLY

It is especially important to make sure you understand how your child should use the inhaler and spacer. It is a good idea to get the practice nurse to show you and for you to check your child’s technique regularly.

Your child’s asthma action plan should also be shared with their school or childcare provider. You can get to know your Cooking Instructions... child’s triggers and by avoiding them you can potentially prevent flare ups. Does being in a smoky environment make their symptoms worse? Or is it particularly bad during cold weather? There are small steps you can take to help keep your child feeling at their best.

Never ignore worsening symptoms For example coughing at night or using the reliever inhaler more than 2 or 3 times a week. The symptoms of an asthma attack can take 6 to 48 hours to become serious. Spotting them early could help avoid a serious attack and admission to hospital.
